A Methodology for Assessing Inlet Swirl Distortion

2022-03-07
CURRENT
AIR5686
This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) addresses the subject of aircraft inlet-swirl distortion. A structured methodology for characterizing steady-state swirl distortion in terms of swirl descriptors and for correlating the swirl descriptors with loss in stability pressure ratio is presented. The methodology is to be considered in conjunction with other SAE inlet distortion methodologies. In particular, the combined effects of swirl and total-pressure distortion on stability margin are considered. However, dynamic swirl, i.e., time-variant swirl, is not considered. The implementation of the swirl assessment methodology is shown through both computational and experimental examples. Different types of swirl distortion encountered in various engine installations and operations are described, and case studies which highlight the impact of swirl on engine stability are provided. Supplemental material is included in the appendices.

AEROSPACE INFORMATION REPORT FOR CONTINUOUS FLOW OXYGEN HOSE DISCONNECT FITTINGS

1991-09-01
HISTORICAL
AIR1358
This AIR indicates those dimensions, deemed critical by the manufacturer, which are required to be adhered to so that proper mating of the disconnect hose fitting with the correct disconnect be accomplished. The dimensions are critical, but not necessarily complete, in defining these fittings since there are other criteria which must also be met.

AEROSPACE-CLEANLINESS CLASSIFICATION FOR HYDRAULIC FLUIDS

1990-03-30
HISTORICAL
AS4059A
This SAE Aerospace Standard defines cleanliness levels for particulate contamination of hydraulic fluids and includes methods of reporting data relating to the contamination levels. The contamination levels selected are an extension and simplification of the widely accepted NAS 1638.

AIRCRAFT TURBINE ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT ENDURANCE TEST PROCEDURE (ROOM TEMPERATURE CONTAMINATED FUEL)

2007-12-04
HISTORICAL
MAP749B
This recommended practice describes a method for conducting room temperature, contaminated fuel, endurance testing when the applicable specification requires nonrecirculation of the contaminants. The objective of the test is to determine the resistance of engine fuel system components to wear or damage caused by contaminated fuel operation. It is not intended as a test for verification of the component’s filter life. ARP1827 is recommended for filter evaluation.
