SAE International Seeking Qualified High School and College Students to Compete in CyberAuto Challenge

SAE International is accepting applications from qualified high school and college students to compete in its five-day workshop on automotive cybersecurity.

The 2019 SAE CyberAuto Challenge™ will be held July 21-26 at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich.

With 100 million lines of code and counting (that’s 40 percent more code than runs Facebook) and 100 million electronic control units, the modern automobile presents challenges for developers and opportunity for hackers. In its eighth year, the 2019 SAE CyberAuto Challenge™ brings students together with researchers, hackers, and engineers to advance their skill sets at this groundbreaking event in automotive cybersecurity.

The Challenge is a five-day practicum-based workshop where students participate in a series of professional-led practical learning sessions and discussions alternating with hands-on work. Students are placed on teams comprised equally of students and professionals, including automotive engineers, government engineers, and ethical “white-hat” hackers. These teams work on real cars to find real answers to the challenges posed by cybersecurity in automobiles and thereby identify automotive cybersecurity trends and develop talent in a new technical discipline in a high-tech industry. The Challenge fosters collaboration and creativity amongst different cross-sectors of the automotive and cybersecurity industries.

Participants will:

  • Learn through lessons and discussions that are paired with hands-on experience in automotive software, hardware and electronics.

  • Work side by side with a cross section of industry professionals, including engineers, government engineers, and “white-hat hackers” there to help you maximize your learning experience

  • Experience the opportunity to participate in a 24-hour hack-a-thon on current model, full-featured vehicles.
