Benefits of Organic Binder Reduction and Improved Resiliency in Intumescent Mat Mounts for Low Temperature and Diesel Applications 2009-01-0977

Typical industry recommendations for intumescent mounting mat systems in diesel and other low temperature applications have, in the past, generally been to heat-treat the assembled converter or filter element prior to field service. With typical intumescent mounting mat compositions, the burn-off of organic binder and pre-expansion of the intumescent component in the heat treatment step have been of critical importance to the performance of the mounting system in the field. This paper will demonstrate the performance benefits of new intumescent mat mount formulations with improved resiliency and reduced organic binder content that do not require heat-treatment.
