Transmissions and Engine-to-Road Gear Ratios 500162

This paper is concerned with various approaches to the problem of providing a sufficient number of correctly spaced transmission gear ratios to meet West Coast truck requirements.
Particular emphasis is placed on means of simplifying the shifting from the driver’s point of view and, at the same time, decreasing the maintenance problem.
The author points out that we have not yet achieved the ultimate in this respect with any of the combinations now commonly used.
