Surface Transportation Systems For Lunar Operations 650838

This paper presents one possible approach to the development of standard vehicular systems for operation on the lunar surface. To establish a basis for design, a model of a lunar exploration program is developed, including the assumption of certain types of lunar installations, their appropriate phasing in the total exploration plan, and a listing of vehicular requirements for each level of activity. The evolution of a potential family of lunar exploration vehicular systems is discussed, including a brief description of the development of a design concept for such systems.
In addition, vehicles that might be typical of those required for the various phases of surface exploration are illustrated, and their performance and operational characteristics tabulated. The paper suggests that surface vehicle requirements for the total lunar exploration program should be an important consideration in the development of the initial lunar roving vehicle.
