New Polymeric Coating on Sputtered Bearings for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines

2013-04-08
2013-01-1724
The polymeric coating developed by MAHLE was applied over a sputtered layer and has demonstrated to be a suitable solution to attend to the application demands. ...The seizure and wear resistance were strongly reinforced with the use of a polymeric coating when compared to a typical Al-Sn sputtered layer. The functional polymeric layer remains in place after long durability tests in a demanding HDD engine.

Polymeric Coated Lead Free Bronze Bearings for High Durability in Medium Duty Diesel Engines

2014-09-30
2014-36-0405
Lead free bronze substrate associated with a lead free electroplated coating has been the standard bearing material technology for medium size Diesel engines. However the increasing engine demands are driving this technology to the limit. ...To meet the requirements of highly loaded Medium Duty Diesel (MDD) applications, a lead free material based on a high resistant bronze substrate associated with a polymeric coating was developed. The polymer is sprayed onto the substrate and cured on a high temperature to provide performance improvement and adequate thickness control.

High Durability and Low Fuel Consumption Ring Pack for HDD Engines

2013-04-08
2013-01-1725
In order to meet these challenges the design of a modern ring pack should consider the utilization of high wear resistance coatings aligned with new geometries to enhance oil film control and reduce friction. This paper includes developments for the entire ring pack with extra emphasis placed on the development of the scraper ring (lower compression ring) and the oil control ring. ...The technology presented will include the application of coatings by physical vapor deposition technology and the application of a new profile on the outer diameter of the oil control ring. ...The performance benefits of the changes to ring coatings and geometry will be explained using rig and engine test results.

Experimental Validation of Rotating Fatigue Test for Valves of Internal Combustion Engine

2010-10-06
2010-36-0351
This paper describes an experimental method to correlate experimental and theoretical bending stress found in a rotating fatigue test for ICE valves. Specimens of actual engine valves were instrumented with strain-gages. The ICE valve fillet stress was measured and compared with theoretical values found by analytical method and finite element analysis. The test allows a fast and relative inexpensive way to study influences like surface finish on the valve fatigue limit. A careful design of the test fixture and load mechanism was necessary to assure pure bending and reduce deviations from test to test. With the result of the stress values correlation, it was carried out an analytical verification of pure bending phenomenon which allowed a stress loading test closer to real-world stress values found on the critical region of the ICE valves.
