Engine Preheaters

2011-12-06
CURRENT
J226_201112
This SAE Standard describes electric immersion engine preheaters for use in the coolant jacket of heavy-duty and intermediate size diesel engines. ...This document gives the dimensional information on the four basic styles of engine preheaters. The tables for each style will list the wattage commonly used. Small engines that typically require less than 600 W of preheat for cold weather starting are not covered by this document. ...These types of engines generally have very little space available to accommodate an immersion heater of the styles presented in this document.

The Axially-Stratified-Charge Engine

1982-02-01
820131
Axial stratification was developed in both single and multi-cylinder engines over the range of operating conditions tested. A production four-cylinder engine modified to operate with axially-stratified-charge, showed: increased combustion stability and tolerance to dilute mixtures; decreased fuel consumption; similar HC and CO emissions; lower NO emissions and octane requirement when compared with the unmodified engine operated at the same overall equivalence ratio. ...A method to stratify the fuel-air mixture along the cylinder axis of engines is described. Axial stratification, with the richest mixture near the top of the combustion chamber and the leanest mixture near the piston top, was obtained by imparting swirl to the intake air and by injecting fuel into the inlet port just before the end of the intake stroke. ...A production four-cylinder engine modified to operate with axially-stratified-charge, showed: increased combustion stability and tolerance to dilute mixtures; decreased fuel consumption; similar HC and CO emissions; lower NO emissions and octane requirement when compared with the unmodified engine operated at the same overall equivalence ratio.

External Software Loading of Electronic Engine Controls

2012-09-25
CURRENT
ARP4714A
Approval as used herein means approval by the engine (and aircraft, if necessary) certifying authority. There are cases where the engine may commence certification activities and no specific aircraft application has been identified. ...This paper presents guidelines for development of a procedure for external software loading of an electronic engine control (EEC) for a commercial application, on-wing or in a qualified service shop. This paper makes the following assumptions: a The EEC is designed to accept external software loading. b The EEC is certified as part of an engine. c The support equipment is qualified in accordance with procedures set forth by the engine (and aircraft, if necessary) certifying authority if the EEC cannot detect an integrity violation of the loaded program. d The software to be loaded has been approved by the engine and aircraft certifying authorities. e One or more configurations of EEC hardware has been identified for each version of software which is to be loaded in the EEC. ...This paper makes the following assumptions: a The EEC is designed to accept external software loading. b The EEC is certified as part of an engine. c The support equipment is qualified in accordance with procedures set forth by the engine (and aircraft, if necessary) certifying authority if the EEC cannot detect an integrity violation of the loaded program. d The software to be loaded has been approved by the engine and aircraft certifying authorities. e One or more configurations of EEC hardware has been identified for each version of software which is to be loaded in the EEC.
