Health Monitoring of Electro-Pneumatic Controlled Systems Using Multivariate Latent Methods: An Experimental Validation

Electro-Pneumatic systems exhibit highly nonlinear characteristics due to air compressibility, the presence of friction and the nonlinearities of control valves. Monitoring by acquiring the system's transfer function accurately can be difficult for nonlinear systems. This paper outlines a new idea that one can deal with the electro-pneumatic system as a black box, and using a multivariate technique called principal component analysis (PCA) and projection to latent structure discriminant analysis (PLSDA) to provide robust information about the system's condition. The monitoring system has been experimentally validated for an electro-pneumatic printing machine system using vibration, pressure and displacement sensory data integration using PCA-PLSDA algorithm. Experiments were conducted under two pressures for three artificially conditions: normal, throttled, and leaking system.

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) summarizes prior empirical findings (AIAA 2018-3991; Chati, 2018) to recommend a modified baseline fuel flow rate model for jet-powered commercial aircraft during taxi operations on the airport surface that better reflects operational values. Existing standard modeling approaches are found to significantly overestimate the taxi fuel flow rate; therefore, a modified multiplicative factor is recommended to be applied to these existing approaches to make them more accurate. Results from the analysis of operational flight data are reported, which form the basis for the modeling enhancements being recommended.

The difficulty in locating crash sites has prompted international efforts for alternatives to quickly recover flight data. This document describes the technical requirements and architectural options for the Timely Recovery of Flight Data (TRFD) in commercial aircraft. ICAO and individual Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs) levy these requirements. The ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and CAA regulations cover both aircraft-level and on-ground systems. This report also documents additional system-level requirements derived from the evaluation of ICAO, CAA, and relevant industry documents and potential TRFD system architectures. It describes two TRFD architectures in the context of a common architectural framework and identifies requirements. This report also discusses implementation recommendations from an airplane-level perspective.

ARINC Specification 844, prepared in two parts, defines the requirements of a Target Data Loader (TDL) from the target hardware point of view. Both parts are based on two data loading standards: Part 1 clarifies ARINC Report 615-3: Airborne Computer High Speed Data Loader, Part 2 clarifies ARINC Report 615-4: Airborne Computer High Speed Data Loader. ARINC Report 615 was originally written from the data loader point of view. It is important that a target designer have a general understanding of the operation of a data loader in its modern implementation. Equally important is the need for data loader manufacturers to understand the standardized implementation requirements and supported subset of ARINC 615 features that are defined in ARINC 844, Parts 1 and 2. Therefore, ARINC Specification 844 is expected to provide value to both data loader and target implementers.
