In the first phase, three light duty diesel vehicles, running on their duty cycles (most often in a urban and congested area), were equipped with smart data loggers to retrieve engine and vehicle activity parameters from the engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in order to monitor their driving conditions in the city of Milan. ...These results were compared to reference laboratory data under both a standard NEDC and a “typical” urban cycle using the Constant Volume Sampling (CVS) technique.

Another part of the work is to evaluate the applicability of the methodology for on-board testing: results and lessons learned from on board measurements conducted on diesel city buses on urban test routes are presented and discussed showing very good test-to-test repeatability. Issues, such as filter handling and conditioning on board, need particular attention for the adaptation of the test method to the future generations of vehicles.

This paper presents the on-road gaseous emission measurements of two light-duty diesel vehicles (Fiat Scudo 2 litre and VW T5, 2.5 litre) tested simultaneously with PEMS on the same routes including urban, extra-urban (rural) and highway during chase experiments. The vehicle absolute emissions and fuel economy is reported.
