Modeling Pre-Chamber Assisted Efficient Combustion in an Argon Power Cycle Engine

The Argon Power Cycle (APC) is a novel zero-emission closed-loop argon recirculating engine cycle which has been developed by Noble Thermodynamics Systems, Inc. It provides a significant gain in indicated thermal efficiency of the reciprocating engine by breathing oxygen and argon rather than air. The use of argon, a monatomic gas, greatly increases the specific heat ratio of the working fluid, resulting in a significantly higher ideal Otto cycle efficiency. This technology delivers a substantial improvement in reciprocating engine performance, maximizing the energy conversion of fuel into useful work. Combined Heat and Power (CHP) operating under the APC represents a promising solution to realize a net-zero-carbon future, providing the thermal energy that hard-to-electrify manufacturing processes need while at the same time delivering clean, dispatchable, and efficient power.

Comprehensive Cradle to Grave Life Cycle Analysis of On-Road Vehicles in the United States Based on GREET

To properly compare and contrast the environmental performance of one vehicle technology against another, it is necessary to consider their production, operation, and end-of-life fates. Since 1995, Argonne’s GREET® life cycle analysis model (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies) has been annually updated to model and refine the latest developments in fuels and materials production, as well as vehicle operational and composition characteristics. Updated cradle-to-grave life cycle analysis results from the model’s latest release are described for a wide variety of fuel and powertrain options for U.S. light-duty and medium/heavy-duty vehicles. Light-duty vehicles include a passenger car, sports utility vehicle (SUV), and pick-up truck, while medium/heavy-duty vehicles include a Class 6 pickup-and-delivery truck, Class 8 day-cab (regional) truck, and Class 8 sleeper-cab (long-haul) truck.

Residual Gas Fraction Measurement and Estimation of the CFR Octane Rating Engine Operating Under HCCI Conditions

The autoignition chemistry of fuels depends on the pressure, temperature, and time history that the fuel-air mixture experiences during the compression stroke. While piezoelectric pressure transducers offer excellent means of pressure measurement, temperature measurements are not commonly available and must be estimated. Even if the pressure and temperature at the intake and exhaust ports are measured, the residual gas fraction (RGF) within the combustion chamber requires estimation and greatly impacts the temperature of the fresh charge at intake valve closing. This work replaced the standard D1 Detonation Pickup of a CFR engine with a rapid sampling valve to allow for in-cylinder gas sampling at defined crank-angle times during the compression stroke. The extracted cylinder contents were captured in an emissions sample bag and its composition was subsequently analyzed in an AVL i60 emissions bench.

Development of a Supercharged Octane Number and a Supercharged Octane Index

Gasoline knock resistance is characterized by the Research and Motor Octane Number (RON and MON), which are rated on the CFR octane rating engine at naturally aspirated conditions. However, modern automotive downsized boosted spark ignition (SI) engines generally operate at higher cylinder pressures and lower temperatures relative to the RON and MON tests. Using the naturally aspirated RON and MON ratings, the octane index (OI) characterizes the knock resistance of gasolines under boosted operation by linearly extrapolating into boosted “beyond RON” conditions via RON, MON, and a linear regression K factor. Using OI solely based on naturally aspirated RON and MON tests to extrapolate into boosted conditions can lead to significant errors in predicting boosted knock resistance between gasolines due to non-linear changes in autoignition and knocking characteristics with increasing pressure conditions.

The Impact of Fuel Injection Strategies and Compression Ratio on Combustion and Performance of a Heavy-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

Gasoline compression ignition using a single gasoline-type fuel has been shown as a method to achieve low-temperature combustion with low engine-out NOx and soot emissions and high indicated thermal efficiency. However, key technical barriers to achieving low temperature combustion on multi-cylinder engines include the air handling system (limited amount of exhaust gas recirculation) as well as mechanical engine limitations (e.g. peak pressure rise rate). In light of these limitations, high temperature combustion with reduced amounts of exhaust gas recirculation appears more practical. Furthermore, for high temperature Gasoline compression ignition, an effective aftertreatment system allows high thermal efficiency with low tailpipe-out emissions. In this work, experimental testing was conducted on a 12.4 L multi-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine operating with high temperature gasoline compression ignition combustion using EEE gasoline.

Numerical Investigation of the Impact of Fuel Flow Rate on Combustion in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine with a Multi-Row Nozzle Injector

Diesel engines are one of the most popular combustion systems used in different types of heavy-duty applications because of higher efficiencies compared to the spark ignition engines. Combustion phasing and the rate of heat release in diesel engines are controlled by the rate at which the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber near top dead center. In this work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to simulate the combustion behavior of a heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with a 16-hole injector, in which the nozzles were arranged in two individual rows. The two rows of nozzles have differential flow rate due to the geometrical construction of the injector. Combustion and performance characteristics of the engine were compared with and without considering the differential flow rate of the nozzle rows at a range of injection timing values.

Three-Dimensional CFD Investigation of Pre-Spark Heat Release in a Boosted SI Engine

Low-temperature heat release (LTHR) in spark-ignited internal combustion engines is a critical step toward the occurrence of auto-ignition, which can lead to an undesirable phenomenon known as engine knock. Hence, correct predictions of LTHR are of utmost importance to improve the understanding of knock and enable techniques aimed at controlling it. While LTHR is typically obscured by the deflagration following the spark ignition, extremely late ignition timings can lead to LTHR occurrence prior to the spark, i.e., pre-spark heat release (PSHR). In this research, PSHR in a boosted direct-injection SI engine was numerically investigated using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A hybrid approach was used, based on the G-equation model for representing the turbulent flame front and the multi-zone well-stirred reactor model for tracking the chemical reactions within the unburnt region.

Defining the Boundary Conditions of the CFR Engine under MON Conditions, and Evaluating Chemical Kinetic Predictions at RON and MON for PRFs

Expanding upon the authors’ previous work which utilized a GT-Power model of the Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) engine under Research Octane Number (RON) conditions, this work defines the boundary conditions of the CFR engine under Motored Octane Number (MON) test conditions. The GT-Power model was validated against experimental CFR engine data for primary reference fuel (PRF) blends between 60 and 100 under standard MON conditions, defining the full range of interest of MON for gasoline-type fuels. The CFR engine model utilizes a predictive turbulent flame propagation sub-model, and a chemical kinetic solver for the end-gas chemistry. The validation was performed simultaneously for thermodynamic and chemical kinetic parameters to match in-cylinder pressure conditions, burn rate, and knock point prediction with experimental data, requiring only minor modifications to the flame propagation model from previous model iterations.

Towards Developing an Unleaded High Octane Test Procedure (RON>100) Using Toluene Standardization Fuels (TSF)

An increase in spark-ignition engine efficiency can be gained by increasing the engine compression ratio, which requires fuels with higher knock resistance. Oxygenated fuel components, such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, or iso-butanol, all have a Research Octane Number (RON) higher than 100. The octane numbers (ON) of fuels are rated on the CFR F1/F2 engine by comparing the knock intensity of a sample fuel relative to that of bracketing primary reference fuels (PRF). The PRFs are a binary blend of iso-octane, which is defined to an ON of 100, and n-heptane, which represents an ON of 0. Above 100 ON, the PRF scale continues by adding diluted tetraethyl lead (TEL) to iso-octane. However, TEL is banned from use in commercial gasoline because of its toxicity. The ASTM octane number test methods have a “Fit for Use” test that validate the CFR engine’s compliance with the octane testing method by verifying the defined ON of toluene standardization fuels (TSF).

Multi-mode combustion strategies may provide a promising pathway to improve thermal efficiency in light-duty spark ignition (SI) engines by enabling switchable combustion modes, wherein an engine may operate under advanced compression ignition (ACI) at low load and spark-assisted ignition at high load. The extension from the SI mode to the ACI mode requires accurate control of intake charge conditions, e.g., pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio, in order to achieve stable combustion phasing and rapid mode-switches. This study presents results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to gain insights into mixture charge formation and combustion dynamics pertaining to auto-ignition processes. The computational study begins with a discussion of thermal wall boundary condition that significantly impacts the combustion phasing.

An Analytical Energy-budget Model for Diesel Droplet Impingement on an Inclined Solid Wall

The study of spray-wall interaction is of great importance to understand the dynamics that occur during fuel impingement onto the chamber wall or piston surfaces in internal combustion engines. It is found that the maximum spreading length of an impinged droplet can provide a quantitative estimation of heat transfer and energy transformation for spray-wall interaction. Furthermore, it influences the air-fuel mixing and hydrocarbon and particle emissions at combusting conditions. In this paper, an analytical model of a single diesel droplet impinging on the wall with different inclined angles (α) is developed in terms of βm (dimensionless maximum spreading length, the ratio of maximum spreading length to initial droplet diameter) to understand the detailed impinging dynamic process.

Powertrain Choices for Emerging Engine Technologies

The peak efficiency of modern spark ignited engines varies from 36% to 40% depending on the exact technology utilized. Most engines can achieve this peak efficiency for a limited operating region. Multi-speed transmissions allow the engine to operate closer to its most efficient operating regions for more significant portions of operation. In the case of hybrid powertrains, electric machines help in improving engine efficiency by adjusting operating speed and load. Engine shutdown during idle events and low loads is another avenue for improving the overall efficiency. The choice of the ideal powertrain and component sizes depends on the engine characteristics, drive cycles and vehicle technical requirements. This study examines what type of powertrains will be suitable for more efficient engines that are likely to be available in the near future. Some of the new technologies achieve higher efficiency with a trade off on power or by accepting a more restrictive operating region.

Performance of a Printed Bimetallic (Stainless Steel and Bronze) Engine Head Operating under Stoichiometric and Lean Spark Ignited (SI) Combustion of Natural Gas

Additive manufacturing was used to fabricate a head for an automotive-scale single-cylinder engine operating on natural gas. The head was consisted of a bimetallic composition of stainless steel and bronze. The engine performance using the bimetallic head was compared against the stock cast iron head. The heads were tested at two speeds (1200 and 1800 rpm), two brake mean effective pressures (6 and 10 bar), and two equivalence ratios (0.7 and 1.0). The bimetallic head showed good durability over the test and produced equivalent efficiencies, exhaust temperatures, and heat rejection to the coolant to the stock head. Higher combustion temperatures and advanced combustion phasing resulted from use with the bimetallic head. The implication is that with optimization of the valve timing, an efficiency benefit may be realized with the bimetallic head.

Improvements to a CFR Engine Three Pressure Analysis GT-Power Model for HCCI and SI Conditions

While experimental data measured directly on the engine are very valuable, there is a limitation of what measurements can be made without modifying the engine or the process that is being investigated, such as cylinder temperature. In order to supplement the experimental results, a Three Pressure Analysis (TPA) GT-Power model of the Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine was previously developed and validated for estimating cylinder temperature and residual fraction. However, this model had only been validated for normal and knocking spark ignition (SI) combustion with RON-like intake conditions (naturally aspirated, <52 °C). This work presents improvements made to the GT-Power model and the expansion of its use for HCCI combustion. The burn rate estimation sub-model was modified to allow for low temperature heat release estimation and compression ignition operation.

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) using a single gasoline-type fuel for direct/port injection has been shown as a method to achieve low-temperature combustion with low engine-out NOx and soot emissions and high indicated thermal efficiency. However, key technical barriers to achieving low temperature combustion on multi-cylinder engines include the air handling system (limited amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)) as well as mechanical engine limitations (e.g. peak pressure rise rate). In light of these limitations, high temperature combustion with reduced amounts of EGR appears more practical. Previous studies with 93 AKI gasoline demonstrated that the port and direct injection strategy exhibited the best performance, but the premature combustion event prevented further increase in the premixed gasoline fraction and efficiency.

Statistical Analysis of Fuel Effects on Cylinder Conditions Leading to End-Gas Autoignition in SI Engines

Currently there is a significant research effort being made in gasoline spark/ignition (SI) engines to understand and reduce cycle-to-cycle variations. One of the phenomena that presents this cycle-to-cycle variation is combustion knock, which also happens to have a very stochastic behavior in modern SI engines. Conversely, the CFR octane rating engine presents much more repeatable combustion knock activity. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of fuel composition on the cycle to cycle variation of the pressure and timing of end gas autoignition. The variation of cylinder conditions at the timing of end-gas autoignition (knock point) for a wide selection of cycle ensembles have been analyzed for several constant RON 98 fuels on the CFR engine, as well as in a modern single-cylinder gasoline direct injection (GDI) SI engine operated at RON-like intake conditions.

This paper presents the first of a two part study, correlating ignition delay data for five RON98 gasoline blends measured under engine-relevant operating conditions in a rapid compression machine (RCM), to the cylinder conditions obtained from a modern SI engine operated in compression ignition mode.

Understanding Fuel Stratification Effects on Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (PPCI) Combustion and Emissions Behaviors

Fuel stratification effects on the combustion and emissions behaviors for partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI) combustion of a high reactivity gasoline (research octane number of 80) was investigated using the third generation Gasoline Direct-Injection Compression Ignition (Gen3 GDCI) multi-cylinder engine. The PPCI combustion mode was achieved through a double injection strategy. The extent of in-cylinder fuel stratification was tailored by varying the start of second fuel injection timing (SOIsecond) while the first fuel injection event was held constant and occurred during the intake stroke. Based on the experimental results, three combustion characteristic zones were identified in terms of the SOIsecond - CA50 (crank angle at 50% cumulative heat release) relationship: (I) no response zone (HCCI-like combustion); (II) negative CA50 slope zone: (early PPCI mode); and (III) positive CA50 slope zone (late PPCI mode).

Effects of Lambda on Knocking Characteristics and RON Rating

The knock resistance of fuels has been historically measured using the ASTM RON and MON methods. However, significant discrepancies between the fuel octane number and knock-limited performance in modern spark-ignited (SI) engines have been well-documented. Differences between the operating conditions of the Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) engine during RON rating and those attained in modern SI engines have been highlighted in the literature. While octane ratings are performed for each fuel on the CFR engine at the lambda that provides the highest knockmeter reading, modern SI engines are generally operated at stoichiometry and knock intensity is based on the high frequency cylinder pressure oscillations associated with knocking combustion. In the present work, an instrumented CFR engine was used to analyze lambda effects on both the conventional knockmeter RON rating method and cylinder pressure transducer based knock intensity.
