Particulate Emissions for LEV II Light-Duty Gasoline Direct Injection Vehicles

Since the mid-1990s, light-duty vehicles equipped with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have been added to the vehicle fleet in increasing numbers. Compared to conventional port fuel injection (PFI) engines, GDI engines provide higher power output for the same size engine, higher fuel efficiency, and lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Due to the paucity of particulate matter (PM) emission data for light-duty gasoline vehicles in general and the increasing interest in these emissions relative to climate and air quality concerns, it is important to investigate PM emissions from current-generation GDI technologies. In this study, nine 2007-2010 light-duty GDI vehicles equipped with either wall-guided or spray-guided fuel injection systems were tested using California commercial gasoline fuel containing six percent ethanol by volume. Criteria pollutants including gaseous and PM emissions were measured over the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) transient test cycle.

Observer Design for Fuel Reforming in HCCI Engines Using a UEGO Sensor

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion shows a high potential of reducing both fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions. Many works have been devoted to extend the HCCI operation range in order to maximize its fuel economy benefit. Among them, fuel injection strategies that use fuel reforming to increase the cylinder charge temperature to facilitate HCCI combustion at low engine loads have been proposed. However, to estimate and control an optimal amount of fuel reforming in the cylinder of an HCCI engine proves to be challenging because the fuel reforming process depends on many engine variables. It is conceivable that the amount of fuel reforming can be estimated since it correlates with the combustion phasing which in turn can be measured using a cylinder pressure sensor.

Chevrolet Sequel: Reinventing the Automobile

Sequel is the third vehicle in GM's Reinvention of the Automobile and is the first zero emissions passenger vehicle to drive more than 300 miles on public roads without refueling or recharging. It is purpose-built around the hydrogen storage and fuel cell systems and uses the skateboard principle introduced in the Autonomy vision concept and the Hy-wire proof-of-concept vehicles. Sequel's aluminum structure, Flexray controlled chassis-by-wire systems and AWD system comprising a single front electric motor and two rear wheel motors make it, perhaps, the most technically advanced automobile ever built. The paper describes the vehicle's design and performance characteristics.

Late Intake Valve Closing as an Emissions Control Strategy at Tier 2 Bin 5 Engine-Out NOx Level

A fully flexible valve actuation (FFVA) system was developed for a single cylinder research engine to investigate high efficiency clean combustion (HECC) in a diesel engine. The main objectives of the study were to examine the emissions, performance, and combustion characteristics of the engine using late intake valve closing (LIVC) to determine the benefits and limitations of this strategy to meet Tier 2 Bin 5 NOx requirements without after-treatment. The most significant benefit of LIVC is a reduction in particulates due to the longer ignition delay time and a subsequent reduction in local fuel rich combustion zones. More than a 95% reduction in particulates was observed at some operating conditions. Combustion noise was also reduced at low and medium loads due to slower heat release. Although it is difficult to assess the fuel economy benefits of LIVC using a single cylinder engine, LIVC shows the potential to improve the fuel economy through several approaches.

Gasoline Fuel Injector Spray Measurement and Characterization - A New SAE J2715 Recommended Practice

With increasingly stringent emissions regulations and concurrent requirements for enhanced engine thermal efficiency, a comprehensive characterization of the automotive gasoline fuel spray has become essential. The acquisition of accurate and repeatable spray data is even more critical when a combustion strategy such as gasoline direct injection is to be utilized. Without industry-wide standardization of testing procedures, large variablilities have been experienced in attempts to verify the claimed spray performance values for the Sauter mean diameter, Dv90, tip penetration and cone angle of many types of fuel sprays. A new SAE Recommended Practice document, J2715, has been developed by the SAE Gasoline Fuel Injection Standards Committee (GFISC) and is now available for the measurement and characterization of the fuel sprays from both gasoline direct injection and port fuel injection injectors.

Development of the Combustion System for General Motors' 3.6L DOHC 4V V6 Engine with Direct Injection

General Motors' 3.6L DOHC 4V V6 engine has been upgraded to provide substantial improvements in performance, fuel economy, and emissions for the 2008 model year Cadillac CTS and STS. The fundamental change was a switch from traditional manifold-port fuel injection (MPFI) to spark ignition direct injection (SIDI). Additional modifications include enhanced cylinder head and intake manifold air flow capacities, optimized camshaft profiles, and increased compression ratio. The SIDI fuel system presented the greatest opportunities for system development and optimization in order to maximize improvements in performance, fuel economy, and emissions. In particular, the injector flow rate, orifice geometry, and spray pattern were selected to provide the optimum balance of high power and torque, low fuel consumption, stable combustion, low smoke emissions, and robust tolerance to injector plugging.

Development of a Rapid Prototyping Controller-based Full-Authority Diesel Engine Controller

A rapid prototyping controller (RPC) based, full-authority, diesel control system is developed, implemented, tested and validated on FTP cycle. As rapid prototyping controller, dSPACE Autobox is coupled with a fast processor based slave for lower level I/O control and a collection of in-house designed interface cards for signal conditioning. The base software set implemented mimics the current production code for a production diesel engine. This is done to facilitate realistic and accurate comparison of production algorithms with new control algorithms to be added on future products. The engine is equipped with all the state-of-the art subsystems found in a modern diesel engine (common rail fuel injection, EGR, Turbocharger etc.).

Optimization of Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Parameters for Low Exhaust Emissions Using The Design of Experiments

For compliance with stringent exhaust emissions regulation, a lot of the world's Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (HDDE) have been recently equipped with electronically controlled components, such as the Fuel Injection Equipment (FIE), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VG). Flexibility of engine control has been increasing more and more with electronic control for low exhaust emissions and good performance. However, determination of the optimum combination of engine control parameters is extremely tedious, because an engine has so many parameters to be optimized and their interactions are complicated. Therefore, a Design of Experiments (DOE) method was used to optimize the engine control parameters, which effect emissions and performance, in a shorter time. After using this method, it was recognized that it was an effective method to optimize various engine parameters, and was very convenient for engine development.

Three-Way Catalyst Technology for Off-Road Equipment Engines

A project was conducted by Southwest Research Institute on behalf of the California Air Resources Board and the South Coast Air Quality Management District to demonstrate the technical feasibility of utilizing closed-loop three-way catalyst technology in off-road equipment applications. Five representative engines were selected, and baseline emission-tested using both gasoline and LPG. Emission reduction systems, employing three-way catalyst technology with electronic fuel control, were designed and installed on two of the engines. The engines were then installed in a fork lift and a pump system, and limited durability testing was performed. Results showed that low emission levels, easily meeting CARB's newly adopted large spark-ignited engine emission standards, could be achieved.

Trial of New Concept Diesel Combustion System - Premixed Compression-Ignited Combustion -

A premixed compression-ignited (PCI) combustion system, which realizes lean combustion with high efficiency and low emissions, was investigated and its effects and problems were ascertained. With PCI combustion, fuel was injected early on the compression stroke and a premixed lean mixture was formed over a long mixing period. The test engine was operated with self-ignition of this premixed lean mixture. From the results of combustion observation and numerical simulation, a need to prevent the fuel spray from adhering to the cylinder liner and combustion-chamber wall was identified. Consequently, an impinged-spray nozzle with low penetration was made and tested. As a result, an extremely low nitrogen-oxide (NOx) emission level was realized but fuel efficiency was detracted slightly. Also, the engine operating range possible with PCI combustion was found to be limited to partial-load conditions and PCI combustion was found to cause an increase in hydrocarbon (HC) emission.

NO Measurement in Diesel Spray Flame Using Laser Induced Fluorescence

NO, OH, and soot in combustion flame produced from burning at high temperature and pressure diesel fuel spray issuing from a single-hole injection nozzle was measured by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser induced incandescence (LII) methods. The LIF images of OH showed that OH radical, distributed in a band-like zone outside the region of the flame luminescence observed, would persist even after the extinction of flame luminescence. The LIF images of NO showed that NO was located slightly outside the flame luminescence zone and that its region was almost the same as that of OH and would tended to increase in the latter period of the combustion process. Also, the LII images showed that the formation of soot would take place near the flame central zone coincident with the flame luminescence zone.

Comparison of the Exhaust Emissions from California Phase 1 (without oxygenates) and Phase 2 (with oxygenates) Fuel:A Case Study of 11 Passenger Vehicles

While most studies addressing the fuel effects are based on the Federal Test Procedure (FTP), there are limited studies investigating the fuel effects outside FTP test conditions. In this study, we investigated the differences in exhaust emissions from California Phase 1 to Phase 2 reformulated gasoline over a wide range of speed and ambient temperatures. Eleven catalyst equipped passenger vehicles were tested. The vehicles were comprised of three fuel delivery system configurations, namely, three from carburetor (CARBU), three from throttle body injection (TBI), and five from multi-port fuel injection (MPFI) group. Each vehicle was given 60 tests with the combination of two reformulated fuels: Phase 1 (without oxygenates) and Phase 2 (with oxygenates), three temperatures (50, 75, and 100 °F), and ten speed cycles (average speed ranges from 4 mph to 65 mph).

Overview of On-Board Diagnostic Systems Used on 1991 California Vehicles

The California Air Resources Board requires that new California vehicles be equipped with on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems. Starting with the 1988 models, these systems were required on new passenger cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty vehicles equipped with three-way catalysts and feed-back fuel controls. The purpose of the OBD system is to expedite the proper repair of emission-related malfunctions and, thus, reduce vehicle emissions. When malfunctons are detected, a malfunction indicator light (MIL) mounted in the dash panel illuminates cautioning the vehicle operator that a repair is needed. Also, a fault code is stored in the OBD computer memory. When the vehicle is brought to a repair facility, the fault code provides the mechanic with the likely areas of malfunction for repairing the vehicle. After the repair is performed, the fault code is cleared, the MIL is extinguished, and the OBD system will subsequently confirm if the proper repair has been performed.

Vehicle Misfueling in California

There have been a half dozen surveys performed by the California Air Resources Board in California from December, 1977 to July, 1982 to determine the rate of vehicle misfueling in California. There has been great concern raised over misfueling which leads to the poisoning of catalysts and the subsequent increases in emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen. The results of observing refueling at service stations indicate a misfueling rate of about 2% which is much lower than what the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency figures indicate. Misfueling at self-serve stations is more than twice that noted at full-serve stations. The primary reasons given by motorists for misfueling are cheaper price of unleaded gasoline, performance (including pinging) and unavailability of unleaded fuel. Misfueling was accomplished primarily as a result of a modified restrictor or filler neck.

The Experimental Safety Vehicle powertrain and fuel system developed by General Motors in compliance with Contract DOT-OS-00095 with the U.S. Department of Transportation include several special features: a low engine accessory package to meet the front visibility down angle of 8 degrees, engine and transmission mounting for retention at high decelerations, a light aluminum engine, an over-the-rear-axle fuel tank, and a unique evaporative emission fuel pipe routing. A comprehensive test program was planned and final testing to validate contract specifications was conducted.
