Streamlining Hybrid Vehicle Control Development with an Efficient MATLAB/Simulink Simulation Platform

Automotive hybrid vehicle controls development is an increasingly complex and challenging task. Therefore, to adequately verify and validate the control algorithms prior to its deployment onto real world testing platforms a robust, scalable, low-maintenance simulation platform is most necessary. The currently available test properties pose major challenges in setup, accessibility, maintenance, complexity, and reusability. The aim of this paper is to present a systematic approach of the initial setup, the adaptation to a vehicle program, and the maintenance of a purely MATLAB/Simulink based simulation platform that alleviates the concerns highlighted above. The platform follows the approach of a level 1 virtualization platform for production intent application software components - without the Run-Time Environment (RTE), Basic Software (BSW), and Microcode Abstraction (MCAL) layers.

Oxygenated Fuels as Reductants for Lean NOx Trap Regeneration

The push for environmental protection and sustainability has led to strict emission regulations for automotive manufacturers as evident in EURO VII and 2026 EPA requirements. The challenge lies in maintaining fuel efficiency and simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint while meeting future emission regulations. Alcohol (primarily methanol, ethanol, and butanol) and ether (dimethyl ether) fuels, owing to their comparable energy density to existing fuels, the comparative ease of handling, renewable production, and suitable emission characteristics may present an attractive drop-in replacement, fully or in part as an additive, to the gasoline/diesel fuels, without extensive modifications to the engine geometry. Additionally, lean and diluted combustion are well-researched pathways for efficiency improvement and reduction of engine-out emissions of modern engines.

A Linear Quadratic Integral Approach to the Profiling of Engine Speed for Synchronization

During driving conditions, when it is needed to transition from Electric Vehicle (EV) to Hybrid Vehicle operation, synchronization of the engine with the shaft and transmission is essential to enable clutch engagement and, subsequently, providing engine power to the wheels. Challenges arise when the engine must generate power to move itself and cannot rely on electric motors for precision. Cost-effective hybrid vehicle propulsion architectures which utilize small 12V belt-starter generators (BSGs) to initiate engine activation are inherently affected. In these situations, a speed profile that balance rapid response and control effort while considering system limitations to mitigate undesirable overshoots and delays, is required. This paper presents a Linear Quadratic Integral (LQI) approach to formulate a speed reference profile that ensures optimal engine behavior.

Study of Dimethyl Ether Fuel Spray Characteristics and Injection Profile

The majority of transportation systems have continued to be powered by the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels. Heavy-duty applications especially are reliant on diesel engines for their high brake efficiency, power density, and robustness. Although engineering developments have advanced engines towards significantly fewer emissions and higher efficiency, the use of fossil-derived diesel as fuel sets a fundamental threshold in the achievable total net carbon reduction. Dimethyl ether can be produced from various renewable feedstocks and has a high chemical reactivity making it suitable for heavy-duty applications, namely compression ignition direct injection engines. Literature shows the successful use of DME fuels in diesel engines without significant hardware modifications.

Analysis of flatness based active damping control of hybrid vehicle transmission

This paper delves into the investigation of flatness-based active damping control for hybrid vehicle transmissions. The main objective is to improve the current in-production controller performances without the need for additional sensors or observers. The primary goals include improving torque setpoint tracking, enhancing robustness margins, and ensuring zero steady-state torque correction. The investigation proceeds in several steps: Initially, both the general differential flatness property and the identification of flat outputs in linear dynamical systems are revisited. Subsequently, the bond graph formalism is employed to deduce straightforwardly the dynamical equations of the system. Next, a new flat output of the vehicle transmission is identified and utilized to formulate the trajectory tracking controller to align with the required control objectives and to fulfill the system constraints.

Engine Stall Recovery and Restart Procedure for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Engine stall, a noteworthy occurrence in traditional vehicles, poses challenges due to the inability to disconnect the engine from the driveline. Consequently, in such scenarios, the vehicle experiences a loss of propulsion, necessitating the driver to pull over. The severity of propulsion loss events is underscored by regulatory bodies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), potentially leading to costly recalls for Automotive Manufacturers. Therefore, proactive measures to avert Loss of Propulsion (LoP) events, including the exploration of remedial actions, are strongly encouraged during powertrain controls design. In contrast, hybrid electric vehicles offer a unique advantage. Given the ability to connect or disconnect the engine from the driveline in hybrid or electric-only modes, an engine stall in hybrid mode need not result in a complete loss of propulsion.

Torque Converter Modeling for Torque Control of Hybrid Electric Powertrains

This paper introduces a novel approach to modeling Torque Converter (TC) in conventional and hybrid vehicles, aiming to enhance torque delivery accuracy and efficiency. Traditionally, the TC is modelled by estimating impeller and turbine torque using the classical Kotwicki’s set of equations for torque multiplication and coupling regions or a generic lookup table based on dynamometer (dyno) data in an electronic control unit (ECU) which can be calibration intensive, and it is susceptible to inaccurate estimations of impeller and turbine torque due to engine torque accuracy, transmission oil temperature, hardware variation, etc. In our proposed method, we leverage an understanding of the TC inertia – torque dynamics and the knowledge of the polynomial relationship between slip speed and fluid path torque. We establish a mathematical model to represent the polynomial relationship between turbine torque and slip speed.

Effect of Spark Assisted Compression Ignition on the End-Gas Autoignition with DME-air Mixtures in a Rapid Compression Machine

Substantial effort has been devoted to utilizing homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) to improve thermal efficiency and reduce emission pollutants in internal combustion engines. However, the uncertainty of ignition timing and limited operational range restrict further adoption for the industry. Using the spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI) technique has the advantage of using a spark event to control the combustion process. This study employs a rapid compression machine to characterize the ignition and combustion process of Dimethyl ether (DME) under engine-like background temperature and pressures and combustion regimes, including HCCI, SACI, and knocking onsite. The spark ignition timing was swept to ignite the mixture under various thermodynamic conditions. This investigation demonstrates the presence of four distinct combustion regimes, including detonation, strong end-gas autoignition, mild end-gas autoignition, and HCCI.

Performance of Spark Current Boost System on a Production Engine under Lean-Burn Conditions

In order to improve the fuel economy for future high-efficiency spark ignition engines, the applications of advanced combustion strategies are considered to be beneficial with an overall lean and/or exhaust gas recirculation diluted cylinder charge. Stronger and more reliable ignition sources become more favorable under extreme lean/EGR conditions. Existing research indicates that the frequency of plasma restrikes increases with increased flow velocity and decreased discharge current level, and a higher discharge current can reduce the gap resistance and maintain the stretched plasma for a longer duration under flow conditions. An in-house developed current boost control system provides flexible control of the discharge current level and discharge duration. The current boost ignition system is based on a multi-coil system with a discharge current level of 180mA.

Wheel & Axle Disconnect Controls on Hybrid Electric Powertrains

With the proliferation of electric vehicles in the market, it has become important for Automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to focus on delivering a higher driving range while also maximizing performance. One approach OEMs are actively considering in meeting this goal is to include a secondary drive axle disconnect into the powertrain which has the potential to improve the overall driving range by about 6-8.3% [4]. This paper outlines the need for a novel controls architecture to make the Powertrain controls software modular and to reduce the development time needed to provide robust powertrain control software. To do this, the electrified powertrain torque controls at STELLANTIS NV takes a decentralized controls architecture approach, by separating the axle disconnect controls subsystem (ADCS) from the primary path of torque controls. The ADCS takes in information such as the desired axle state and controls the axle disconnect actuators to achieve that state.

Next Generation High Efficiency Boosted Engine Concept

This work represents an advanced engineering research project partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Ford Motor Company, FEV North America, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory collaborated to develop a next generation boosted spark ignited engine concept. The project goals, specified by the DOE, were 23% improved fuel economy and 15% reduced weight relative to a 2015 or newer light-duty vehicle. The fuel economy goal was achieved by designing an engine incorporating high geometric compression ratio, high dilution tolerance, low pumping work, and low friction. The increased tendency for knock with high compression ratio was addressed using early intake valve closing (EIVC), cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), an active pre-chamber ignition system, and careful management of the fresh charge temperature.

Proactive Battery Energy Management Using Navigation Information

In this paper, a control strategy for state of charge (SOC) allocation using navigation data for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) propulsion systems is proposed. This algorithm dynamically defines and adjusts a SOC target as a function of distance travelled on-line, thereby enabling proactive management of the energy store in the battery. The proposed approach incorporates variances in road resistance and adheres to geolocation constraints, including ultra-low emission zones (uLEZ). The anticipated advantages are particularly pronounced during scenarios involving extensive medium-to-long journeys characterized by abrupt topological changes or the necessity for exclusive electric vehicle (EV) mode operation. This novel solution stands to significantly enhance both drivability and fuel economy outcomes.

Development of Time-Temperature Analysis Algorithm for Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Useful Life

Due to the recent progress in electrification, lithium-ion batteries have been widely used for electric and hybrid vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries exhibit high energy density and high-power density which are critical for vehicle development with high driving range enhanced performance. However, high battery temperature can negatively impact the battery life, performance, and energy delivery. In this paper, we developed and applied an analytical algorithm to estimate battery life-based vehicle level testing. A set of vehicle level tests were selected to represent customer duty cycles. Thermal degradation models are applied to estimate battery capacity loss during driving and park conditions. Due to the sensitivity of Lithium-Ion batteries to heat, the effect of high ambient temperatures throughout the year is considered as well. The analysis provides an estimate of the capacity loss due to calendar and cyclic effects throughout the battery life.

Investigation of Fuel Injection Pressure Impact on Dimethyl Ether Combustion

Compression ignition engines used in heavy-duty applications are typically powered by diesel fuel. The high energy density and feedstock abundance provide a continuing source for the immense energy demand. However, the heavy-duty transportation sector is challenged with lowering greenhouse gas and combustion by-product emissions, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. The continuing development of engine management and combustion strategies has proven the ability to meet current regulations, particularly with higher fuel injection pressure. Nonetheless, a transition from diesel to a renewable alternative fuel source will play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gases while maintaining the convenience and energy density inherent in liquid fuels. Dimethyl ether is a versatile fuel that possesses combustion properties suitable for compression ignition engines and physical properties helpful for clean combustion.

LCA and LCC of a Li-ion Battery Pack for Automotive Application

Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries have emerged as the dominant technology for electric mobility due to their performance, stability, and long cycle life. Nevertheless, there are emerging environmental and economic issues from Li-ion batteries related to depleting critical resources and their potential shortage. This paper focuses on developing the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of a generic Li-ion battery pack with a Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) cathode chemistry, being the most used, and a capacity of 95 kWh as an average between different carmakers. The LCA and LCC include all the relevant phases of the life cycle of the product. The costs related to the LCC assessment have been taken as secondary data. Lastly, the same system boundary has been chosen both for the LCA and LCC.

Optimization of Aluminum Sleeve Design for the tow eye Durability Using DFSS Approach

The automotive industry is moving towards larger SUVs and also electrification is a need to meet the carbon neutrality target. As a result, we see an increase in overall gross vehicle weight (GVW), with the additional weight coming from the HV battery pack, electric powertrain, and other electrical systems. Tow-eye is an essential component that is provided with every vehicle to use for towing during an emergency vehicle breakdown. The tow-eye is usually connected to the retainer/sleeve available in the bumper system and towed using the recovery vehicle or other car with towing provision. Therefore, the tow-eye should meet the functional targets under standard operating conditions. This study is mainly for cars with bumper and tow-eye sleeves made of aluminum which is used in the most recent development of vehicles for weight-saving opportunities. Tow-eye systems in aluminum bumpers are designed to avoid any bending or buckling of the sleeve during towing for whatever the GVW loads.

Nonlinear, Concave, Constrained Optimization in Six-Dimensional Space for Hybrid-Electric Powertrains

One of the building blocks of the Stellantis hybrid powertrain embedded control software computes the maximum and minimum values of objective functions, such as output torque, as a function of engine torque, hybrid motor torque and other variables. To test such embedded software, an offline reference function was created. The reference function calculates the ideal minimum and maximum values to be compared with the output of the embedded software. This article presents the offline reference function with an emphasis on mathematical novelties. The reference function computes the minimum and maximum points of a linear objective function as a function of six independent variables, subject to 42 linear and two nonlinear constraints. Concave domains, curved surfaces, disjoint domains and multiple local extremum points challenge the algorithm. As a theorem, the conditions and methods for running trigonometric calculations in 6D Euclidean space are presented.

Transient Electrochemical Modeling and Performance Investigation Under Different Driving Conditions for 144Ah Li-ion Cell with Two Jelly Rolls

Recently, the automotive industry has experienced rapid growth in powertrain electrification, with more and more battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles being launched. Lithium-ion batteries play an important role due to their high energy capacity and power density, however they experience high heat generation in their operation, and if not properly cooled it can lead to serious safety issues as well as lower performance and durability. In that way, good prediction of a battery behavior is crucial for successful design and management. This paper presents a 1D electrochemical model development of a 144 Ah prismatic rolled cell using the GT-Autolion software with a pseudo 2D approach. The model correlation is done at cell level comparing model results and test data of cell open circuit voltage at different temperatures and voltage and temperature profile under different C-rates and ambient temperatures.

Development of a Novel High Strength Aluminum-Cerium Based Rotor Alloy for Electric Vehicle Induction Motor Applications

To increase vehicle range, light weighting of electric vehicles has been extensively researched and implemented by using aluminum intensive solutions. With regards to traction motors, aluminum alloys that have a desired combination of high electrical conductivity and strength are required for high power output and efficiency. In this research, a novel Al-Ce based alloy, with minor additions of Si and Mg for strengthening, was investigated in different heat treatment tempers to maximize mechanical properties while maintaining a high electrical conductivity. This new alloy system appears to have addressed the classic conundrum of the inverse relationship of mechanical performance verses electrical conductivity for traditional aluminum alloy systems. The results suggest that the Al-Ce-Si-Mg alloy had yield strength in excess of 120 MPa and electrical conductivity of at least 50 %IACS in the T5 and T6 conditions.

As the automotive industry is quickly changing towards electric vehicles, we can highlight the importance of aerodynamics and its critical role in reaching extended battery ranges for electric cars. With all new smooth underbodies, a lot of attention has turned into the effects of rim designs and tires brands and the management of these tire wakes with the vehicle. Tires are one of the most challenging areas for aerodynamic drag prediction due to its unsteady behavior and rubber deformation. With the simulation technologies evolving fast regarding modeling spinning tires for aerodynamics, this paper takes the prior work and data completed by the authors and investigates the impact on the flow fields and aerodynamic forces using the most recent developments of an Immerse Boundary Method (IBM). IBM allows us to mimic realistically a rotating and deformed tire using Lattice Boltzmann methods.
