A Linear Quadratic Integral Approach to the Profiling of Engine Speed for Synchronization

During driving conditions, when it is needed to transition from Electric Vehicle (EV) to Hybrid Vehicle operation, synchronization of the engine with the shaft and transmission is essential to enable clutch engagement and, subsequently, providing engine power to the wheels. Challenges arise when the engine must generate power to move itself and cannot rely on electric motors for precision. Cost-effective hybrid vehicle propulsion architectures which utilize small 12V belt-starter generators (BSGs) to initiate engine activation are inherently affected. In these situations, a speed profile that balance rapid response and control effort while considering system limitations to mitigate undesirable overshoots and delays, is required. This paper presents a Linear Quadratic Integral (LQI) approach to formulate a speed reference profile that ensures optimal engine behavior.

A Review of Production Multi-Motor Electric Vehicles and Energy Management and Model Predictive Control Techniques

This paper presents the characteristics of more than 260 trim levels for over 50 production electric vehicle (EV) models on the market since 2014. Data analysis shows a clear trend of all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrains being increasingly offered on the market from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that AWD EVs have seen a nearly 4 times increase in production from 21 models in 2020 to 79 models in 2023. Meanwhile single axle front-wheel-drive (FWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) drivetrains have seen small to moderate increases over the same period, going from 9 to 11 models and from 5 to 12 models, respectively. Further looking into AWD architectures demonstrates dual electric machine (EM) powertrains using different EM types on each axle remain a small portion of the dual-motor AWD category.

An Adaptive Flux-Weakening Strategy Considering High-Speed Operation of Dual Three-Phase PM Machine for Electric Vehicles

Dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are becoming attractive for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion systems in the automotive industry. Flux-weakening (FW) control technique is important to ensure DTP-PMSMs operating in high-speed range. This paper proposes an adaptive FW control algorithm to ensure better performance and stability in variant speeds. A small-signal model is developed to obtain the adaptive gain for a constant controller bandwidth regardless of the speeds. The proposed FW controller is implemented, tuned, and validated on a DTP-PMSM experiment setup. The proposed method improves the FW performances in terms of torque and system stability, compared with the non-adaptive FW controller. Moreover, the harmonics analysis shows an inevitable xy-components affecting the overall performances. The effect of xy controller gain is further investigated for the FW operation.

Differential Flatness-Based Control of Switched Reluctance Motors

This paper presents a Differential Flatness-Based Control (FBC) approach for the current control of Switched Reluctance Machines (SRMs), a potential candidate for the automotive industry. The main challenges in SRM control methods stem from motor nonlinearity. In electrical drives, FBC has been applied in doubly-fed induction generators, permanent magnet motors, and magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors. Among the few papers that have used FBC for SRM, this research distinguishes itself by addressing current control and considering both current and flux-linkage separately as a flat output, an approach not found in previous literature. The performance of the proposed controls is assessed in a three-phase 12/8 SRM against the conventional hysteresis current controller (HCC) and PI controller. Additionally, it is integrated into a torque-sharing function based on a maximum torque per ampere control strategy.

This paper proposes an optimization-based transmission gear shifting strategy for electrified powertrains with a transmission. With the demand for reduced vehicle emissions, electrified propulsion systems have garnered significant attention due to their potential to improve vehicle efficiency and performance. An electrified propulsion system architecture of significance includes multiple electric motors and a transmission where some driveline actuators can transmit torque through changing gear ratios. If there is at least one electric motor arranged before the input of the transmission and at least one after the transmission output, a unique design opportunity arises to shift gears in the most energy efficient manner.

Spark ignition engines utilize catalytic converters to reform harmful exhaust gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen into less harmful products. Aftertreatment devices require the use of expensive catalytic metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Meanwhile, tightening automotive emissions regulations globally necessitate the development of high-performance exhaust gas catalysts. So, automotive manufactures must balance maximizing catalyst performance while minimizing production costs. There are thousands of different recipes for catalytic converters, with each having a different effect on the various catalytic chemical reactions which impact the resultant tailpipe gas composition. In the development of catalytic converters, simulation models are often used to reduce the need for physical parts and testing, thus saving significant time and money.

Proactive Battery Energy Management Using Navigation Information

In this paper, a control strategy for state of charge (SOC) allocation using navigation data for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) propulsion systems is proposed. This algorithm dynamically defines and adjusts a SOC target as a function of distance travelled on-line, thereby enabling proactive management of the energy store in the battery. The proposed approach incorporates variances in road resistance and adheres to geolocation constraints, including ultra-low emission zones (uLEZ). The anticipated advantages are particularly pronounced during scenarios involving extensive medium-to-long journeys characterized by abrupt topological changes or the necessity for exclusive electric vehicle (EV) mode operation. This novel solution stands to significantly enhance both drivability and fuel economy outcomes.

Challenges in PM Measurement at 1 mg/mile and Tunnel Background Correction

The LEV IV FTP PM limit in the recently approved CARB ACC II regulations for passenger cars and light duty trucks will be 1 mg/mile starting in 2025. Gravimetric PM measurement at these levels is very challenging as the net mass of PM on the filter in full flow tunnel testing ranges between 8 to 32 micrograms depending on amount of dilution. This is approaching tunnel background levels which, in combination with filter handling, static charge removal and microbalance instability, compounds the uncertainty. One major source of the uncertainty at these low levels is the tunnel contamination resulting in high variability from test to test and cell to cell. This tunnel background is mostly HC artifact which cannot be easily controlled and can be significantly higher than the 5-μg CFR allowable correction limit in some test cells.

Adaptive Real-Time Energy Management of a Multi-Mode Hybrid Electric Powertrain

Meticulous design of the energy management control algorithm is required to exploit all fuel-saving potentials of a hybrid electric vehicle. Equivalent consumption minimization strategy is a well-known representative of on-line strategies that can give near-optimal solutions without knowing the future driving tasks. In this context, this paper aims to propose an adaptive real-time equivalent consumption minimization strategy for a multi-mode hybrid electric powertrain. With the help of road recognition and vehicle speed prediction techniques, future driving conditions can be predicted over a certain horizon. Based on the predicted power demand, the optimal equivalence factor is calculated in advance by using bisection method and implemented for the upcoming driving period. In such a way, the equivalence factor is updated periodically to achieve charge sustaining operation and optimality.

Instantaneous optimization-based energy management systems (EMS) are getting popular since they can yield near-optimal performance in unknown driving situations with minimalistic tuning parameters. However, they often disregard the drivability score of the powertrain as a performance assessment criterion, and this leads to too frequent or even infeasible mode-transitions during the multi-mode operation of a hybrid electric powertrain. Aiming to bring down the mode-transition frequency below a feasible limit, this paper proffers an instantaneous optimization-based EMS, which also accounts for the energy lost during mode-transitions into the cost function along with the electrical and chemical energy losses. The energy lost during a single mode-transition event refers to the summation of change in rotational energy for all the prime-movers, i.e., internal combustion engine and electric machines.

A Computationally Lightweight Dynamic Programming Formulation for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Predicting the fuel economy capability of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains by solving the related optimal control problem has been available for a few decades. Dynamic programming (DP) is one of the most popular techniques implemented to this end. Current research aims at integrating further powertrain modeling criteria that improve the fidelity level of the optimal HEV powertrain control behavior predicted by DP, thus corroborating the reliability of the fuel economy assessment. Dedicated methodologies need further development to avoid the curse of dimensionality which is typically associated to DP when increasing the number of control and state variables considered. This paper aims at considerably reducing the overall computational effort required by DP for HEVs by removing the state term associated to the battery state-of-charge (SOC).

OBD Limit Part Creation Using DFSS Methodology: NMHC Catalyst Emissions Control System

In the light duty diesel segment, the need persists for an advanced control system to monitor the health of an aftertreatment system throughout a vehicle’s life in order to maintain compliance with ever tightening emissions levels. In on-board diagnostics (OBD), every diagnostic is validated during development stages to detect when a system under monitoring of that diagnostic has failed. This necessitates the need to create parts which represent a failure that would be observed on the vehicle. These failed parts, referred to as limit or threshold parts, are developed through a limit part creation process. Although there are commonalities amongst Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), each OEM has their own detection logic which will require a unique and specific limit part. Various methods exist for creating these limit parts, and each method produces a different combination of ability to detect the failure and its associated tailpipe emissions.

Overmodulation Strategies for Dual Three-Phase PMSM Drives

A comparative analysis of overmodulation methods is performed in the generalized form in this paper. The generalized form is based on four segmented formulae, which streamlines the execution of the PWM module. The comparative analysis considers five aspects: actual modulation index, harmonic content, transition to six-step operation, modulation index linearization, and execution complexity. The main contributions of this paper are twofold. Firstly, a thorough assessment of conventional overmodulation strategies for dual three-phase PMSM drives is undertaken. Secondly, a modified Minimum Phase Error (MPE) overmodulation method is proposed to extend the overmodulation to six-step operation. The modified MPE is introduced with advantages of wider modulation index range, low harmonic components in voltages and currents, smooth transition to six-step operation, and simple implementation.

Model-Based Thermal Control Strategy for Electrified Vehicles

Stringent requirements for high fuel economy and energy efficiency mandate using increasingly complex vehicle thermal systems in most types of electrified vehicles (xEVs). Enabling the maximum benefits of such complex thermal systems under the full envelope of their operating modes demands designing complex thermal control systems. This is becoming one of the most challenging problems for electrified vehicles. Typically, the thermal systems of such vehicles have several modes of operation, constituting nonlinear multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) dynamic systems that cannot be efficiently controlled using classical or rule based strategies. This paper covers the different steps towards the design of a model-based control (MBC) strategy that can improve the overall performance of xEV thermal control systems. To achieve the above objective, the latter MBC strategy is applied to control cooling of the cabin and high voltage battery.

Aspects of Migrating from Decentralized to Centralized E/E Architectures

As centralization of automotive E/E (Electrical and/or Electronic) architectures becomes reality for future vehicles, it is crucial that existing assets be reused in the most efficient and effective manner. We report on our experience developing a new centralized E/E architecture for a propulsion domain, and migrating the corresponding propulsion elements of an existing decentralized, CAN-based architecture to a prototype of the centralized propulsion domain. Our migration adopts automotive Ethernet and supporting standards as a next-generation communications backbone technology; a next-generation computation platform from automotive supplier NXP; and a new automotive virtualization solution from OpenSynergy. We discuss aspects of legacy software reuse and adaptation; modification of vehicle HiL simulation models used in testing; existing vendor tool support; and implications arising from functional safety and the ISO 26262 standard.

Chevrolet Bolt Electric Vehicle Model Validated with On-the-Road Data and Applied to Estimating the Benefits of a Multi-Speed Gearbox

This paper presents a model for predicting the energy consumption of a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. The model is validated using 93 measured drive cycles covering in excess of 10,600 kilometres of driving and temperatures from −8 to 32 °C. The mechanical road load acting on the vehicle is calculated via ABC parameters from the publicly available US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Annual Certification Data database. The vehicle model includes wheel diameter, gear ratio, rated electric machine torque and power, 12V accessory load based off measurements, measured electric machine efficiency obtained from a publication from General Motors, and modelled inverter efficiency. Assumptions are made regarding gearbox losses as well. To ensure accuracy under real-world conditions, road grade, temperature effects, and heating and cooling energy are included as well. The model predicts an EPA range of 380 km, which is very close to the 383 km rating.

Impact of CO2 Dilution on Ignition Delay Times of Full Blend Gasolines in a Rapid Compression Machine

Autoignition delay times of two full blend gasoline fuels (high and low RON) were explored in a rapid compression machine. CO2 dilution by mass was introduced at 0%, 15%, and 30% levels with the O2:N2 mole ratio fixed at 1:3.76. This dilution strategy is used to represent exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) substitution in spark ignition (SI) engines by using CO2 as a surrogate for major EGR constituents(N2, CO2, H2O). Experiments were conducted over the temperature range of 650K-900K and at 10 bar and 20 bar compressed pressure conditions for equivalence ratios of (Φ =) 0.6-1.3. The full blend fuels were admitted directly into the combustion chamber for mixture preparation using the direct test chamber (DTC) approach. CO2 addition retarded the autoignition times for the fuels studied here. The retarding effect of the CO2 dilution was more pronounced in the NTC region when compared to the lower and higher temperature range.

CAE Correlation of Sealing Pressure of a Press-in-Place Gasket

The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasket bolted joint. A sensor pad in combination with TEKSCAN equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various engine loading conditions. Then, the test results were compared with simulated results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it was found that gasket sealing pressure of test data and CAE data shows good correlations in all internal pressure cases when the bolt load was 500 N.

Optimum Engine Power Point Determination Method to Maximize Fuel Economy in Hybrid Vehicles

One of the advantages of hybrid vehicles is the ability to operate the engine more optimally at a low brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) as compared to conventional vehicles. This ability of hybrid vehicles is a major factor contributing to the fuel economy improvement over conventional vehicles. Unlike conventional gasoline powertrains, hybrid powertrains allow engine to be switched off and use battery power to propel vehicles. In order to maintain battery state of charge neutral operation between the start and end of a drive cycle, the net electrical energy consumption from the battery requires to be zero. An optimization algorithm can be developed and calibrated in different ways to achieve net zero battery energy over the cycle. For instance, the engine can be operated at powers higher than the power of the drive cycle to charge the battery. This accumulated energy can be used for all-electric propulsion by turning off the engine.
