A Special User Shell Element for Coarse Mesh and High-Fidelity Fatigue Modeling of Spot-Welded Structures

A special spot weld element (SWE) is presented for simplified representation of spot joints in complex structures for structural durability evaluation using the mesh-insensitive structural stress method. The SWE is formulated using rigorous linear four-node Mindlin shell elements with consideration of weld region kinematic constraints and force/moments equilibrium conditions. The SWEs are capable of capturing all major deformation modes around weld region such that rather coarse finite element mesh can be used in durability modeling of complex vehicle structures without losing any accuracy. With the SWEs, all relevant traction structural stress components around a spot weld nugget can be fully captured in a mesh-insensitive manner for evaluation of multiaxial fatigue failure.

Extended Deep Learning Model to Predict the Electric Vehicle Motor Operating Point

The transition from combustion engines to electric propulsion is accelerating in every coordinate of the globe. The engineers had strived hard to augment the engine performance for more than eight decades, and a similar challenge had emerged again for electric vehicles. To analyze the performance of the engine, the vector engine operating point (EOP) is defined, which is common industry practice, and the performance vector electric vehicle motor operating point (EVMOP) is not explored in the existing literature. In an analogous sense, electric vehicles are embedded with three primary components, e.g., Battery, Inverter, Motor, and in this article, the EVMOP is defined using the parameters [motor torque, motor speed, motor current]. As a second aspect of this research, deep learning models are developed to predict the EVMOP by mapping the parameters representing the dynamic state of the system in real-time.

Estimating How Long In-Vehicle Tasks Take: Static Data for Distraction and Ease-of-Use Evaluations

Often, when assessing the distraction or ease of use of an in-vehicle task (such as entering a destination using the street address method), the first question is “How long does the task take on average?” Engineers routinely resolve this question using computational models. For in-vehicle tasks, “how long” is estimated by summing times for the included task elements (e.g., decide what to do, press a button) from SAE Recommended Practice J2365 or now using new static (while parked) data presented here. Times for the occlusion conditions in J2365 and the NHTSA Distraction Guidelines can be determined using static data and Pettitt’s Method or Purucker’s Method. These first approximations are reasonable and can be determined quickly. The next question usually is “How likely is it that the task will exceed some limit?”

With reference to present literature, most OEMs are working on reducing product development time by around ~20%, through seamless integration of digital ecosystem and focusing on dynamic customer needs. The Systems Engineering approach focuses on functions & systems rather than components. In this approach, designers (Computer Aided Design) / analysts (Computer Aided Engineering) need to understand program requirements early to enable seamless integration. This approach also reduces the number of iterative loops between cross functions thereby reducing the development cycle time. In this paper, we have attempted to tackle a common challenge faced by Closures (Liftgate) engineering: meeting slam durability fatigue life while replicating customer normal and abusive closing behavior.

Automotive seat comfort systems provide occupants with a choice to adjust the seat to individual preference, enhancing the customized comfort feel. Seat comfort systems such as massager, lumbar support bladders, seat cushion bolster bladders and seat back bolster bladders are increasingly adopted in automotive seats as customer demand for customizable seats is on the rise. Development of seat comfort systems is mainly driven by Tier 1 suppliers to an automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The Automotive OEM must wait until the final seat prototype is ready with all the seat comfort systems packaged to evaluate the seat comfort performance. Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Tools like CASIMIR provide detail dummies representing humans with tissues and muscles, allowing occupant seat comfort to be predicted virtually.

Finite Element Analyses of Macroscopic Stress-Strain Relations and Failure Modes for Tensile Tests of Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg with Consideration of Melt Pool Microstructures and Pores

Finite element (FE) analyses of macroscopic stress-strain relations and failure modes for tensile tests of additively manufactured (AM) AlSi10Mg in different loading directions with respect to the building direction are conducted with consideration of melt pool (MP) microstructures and pores. The material constitutive relations in different orientations of AM AlSi10Mg are first obtained from fitting the experimental tensile engineering stress-strain curves by conducting axisymmetric FE analyses of round bar tensile specimens. Four representative volume elements (RVEs) with MP microstructures with and without pores are identified and selected based on the micrographs of the longitudinal cross-sections of the vertical and horizontal tensile specimens. Two-dimensional plane stress elastic-plastic FE analyses of the RVEs subjected to uniaxial tension are then conducted.

An Ultra-Light Heuristic Algorithm for Autonomous Optimal Eco-Driving

Connected autonomy brings with it the means of significantly increasing vehicle Energy Economy (EE) through optimal Eco-Driving control. Much research has been conducted in the area of autonomous Eco-Driving control via various methods. Generally, proposed algorithms fall into the broad categories of rules-based controls, optimal controls, and meta-heuristics. Proposed algorithms also vary in cost function type with the 2-norm of acceleration being common. In a previous study the authors classified and implemented commonly represented methods from the literature using real-world data. Results from the study showed a tradeoff between EE improvement and run-time and that the best overall performers were meta-heuristics. Results also showed that cost functions sensitive to the 1-norm of acceleration led to better performance than those which directly minimize the 2-norm.

Assessing Driver Distraction: Enhancements of the ISO 26022 Lane Change Task to Make its Difficulty Adjustable

The Lane Change Task (LCT) provides a simple, scorable simulation of driving, and serves as a primary task in studies of driver distraction. It is widely accepted, but somewhat limited in functionality, a problem this project partially overcomes. In the Lane Change Task, subjects drive along a road with 3 lanes in the same direction. Periodically, signs appear, indicating in which of the 3 lanes the subject should drive, which changes from sign to sign. The software is plug-and-play for a current Windows computer with a Logitech steering/pedal assembly, even though the software was written 18 years ago. For each timestamp in a trial, the software records the steering wheel angle, speed, and x and y coordinates of the subject. A limitation of the LCT is that few characteristics of this useful software can be readily modified as only the executable code is available (on the ISO 26022 website), not the source code.

A Standard Set of Courses to Assess the Quality of Driving Off-Road Combat Vehicles

Making manned and remotely-controlled wheeled and tracked vehicles easier to drive, especially off-road, is of great interest to the U.S. Army. If vehicles are easier to drive (especially closed hatch) or if they are driven autonomously, then drivers could perform additional tasks (e.g., operating weapons or communication systems), leading to reduced crew sizes. Further, poorly driven vehicles are more likely to get stuck, roll over, or encounter mines or improvised explosive devices, whereby the vehicle can no longer perform its mission and crew member safety is jeopardized. HMI technology and systems to support human drivers (e.g., autonomous driving systems, in-vehicle monitors or head-mounted displays, various control devices (including game controllers), navigation and route-planning systems) need to be evaluated, which traditionally occurs in mission-specific (and incomparable) evaluations.

Neural Network Model to Predict the Thermal Operating Point of an Electric Vehicle

The automotive industry widely accepted the launch of electric vehicles in the global market, resulting in the emergence of many new areas, including battery health, inverter design, and motor dynamics. Maintaining the desired thermal stress is required to achieve augmented performance along with the optimal design of these components. The HVAC system controls the coolant and refrigerant fluid pressures to maintain the temperatures of [Battery, Inverter, Motor] in a definite range. However, identifying the prominent factors affecting the thermal stress of electric vehicle components and their effect on temperature variation was not investigated in real-time. Therefore, this article defines the vector electric vehicle thermal operating point (EVTHOP) as the first step with three elements [instantaneous battery temperature, instantaneous inverter temperature, instantaneous stator temperature].

Automated vehicles (AVs)—and the automated driving systems (ADSs) that enable them—are increasing in prevalence but remain far from ubiquitous. Progress has occurred in spurts, followed by lulls, while the motor transportation system learns to design, deploy, and regulate AVs. Automated Vehicles: A Human/Machine Co-learning Experience focuses on how engineers, regulators, and road users are all learning about a technology that has the potential to transform society. Those engaged in the design of ADSs and AVs may find it useful to consider that the spurts and lulls and stakeholder tussles are a normal part of technology transformations; however, this report will provide suggestions for effective stakeholder engagement. Mobility in the automotive and transportation sectors has been experiencing a period of unprecedented evolution. A growing need for efficient, clean and safe mobility has increased momentum toward sustainable technologies in these sectors. Toward this end, battery electric vehicles have drawn keen interest and their market share is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, especially in light-duty applications such as passenger cars. Although the battery electric vehicles feature high performance and zero tailpipe emission characteristics, economic and technical issues such as battery cost, driving range, recharging time and infrastructure remain main hurdles that need to be fully addressed. In particular, the low power density of the battery limits its broad adoption in heavy-duty applications such as class 8 semi-trailer trucks due to the required size and weight of the battery and electric motor.

Predictive Maintenance of Commercial Vehicle Brakes using Acoustic Monitoring

This study evaluated the performance of a new approach for detecting problems with commercial vehicle brakes based on the analysis of sounds emitted during braking. Commercial vehicle brakes emit ultrasonic energy inaudible to humans as part of the friction process, and the spectral distribution of these sounds is highly dependent on the mechanical condition of the brakes. Data collected from a commercial vehicle fleet found that the acoustic signature changes as friction linings wear. This conforms with the acoustic theory that the resonant frequency of an object increases with its decrease in mass. The use of this information to inform maintenance operations is promising in that the scheduling of visual brake inspections could be based on acoustic wear patterns rather than arbitrary time intervals and the observation of anomalous signals that might indicate more immediate concerns.

Low-Speed Autonomous Shuttles - Lessons Learned from Real-World Implementation

Low-speed automated vehicles (LSAVs) are being deployed in various scenarios to enhance mobility for a wide variety of transportation users. LSAVs are typically highly automated battery-electric vehicles that transport up to eight passengers at speeds below 15 mph on predefined and previously mapped routes. Current applications include providing last-mile connectivity and serving as circulating shuttles in areas such as business districts, military bases, parking lots, and theme parks. An EasyMile EZ10 LSAV was deployed on a route between the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) campus and a nearby bus transit stop as part of a study focusing on prospective user attitudes and acceptance with regard to trust in technology, system safety, and personal security. The LSAV operated on this route within normal travel lanes and interacted with mixed public traffic that included the full range of transportation users from pedestrians to heavy vehicles.

Lateral Controllability for Automated Driving (SAE Level 2 and Level 3 Automated Driving Systems)

In this study we collect and analyze data on how hands-free automated lane centering systems affect the controllability of a hazardous event during an operational situation by a human operator. Through these data and their analysis, we seek to answer the following questions: Is Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving inherently uncontrollable as a result of a steering failure? Or, is there some level of operator control of hazardous situations occurring during Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving that can reasonably be expected, given that these systems still rely on a driver as the primary fall back. The controllability focus group experiments were carried out using an instrumented MY15 Jeep® Cherokee with a prototype Level 2 automated driving system that was modified to simulate a hands-free steering system on a closed track with speeds up to 110kph. The vehicle was also fitted with supplemental safety measures to ensure experimenter control.

Tanker Truck Rollover Avoidance Using Learning Reference Governor

Tanker trucks are commonly used for transporting liquid material including chemical and petroleum products. On the one hand, tanker trucks are susceptible to rollover accidents due to the high center of gravity when they are loaded and due to the liquid sloshing effects when the tank is partially filled. On the other hand, tanker truck rollover accidents are among the most dangerous vehicle crashes, frequently resulting in serious to fatal driver injuries and significant property damage, because the liquid cargo is often hazardous and flammable. Therefore, effective schemes for tanker truck rollover avoidance are highly desirable and can bring a considerable amount of societal benefit. Yet, the development of such schemes is challenging, as tanker trucks can operate in various environments and be affected by manufacturing variability, aging, degradation, etc. This paper considers the use of Learning Reference Governor (LRG) for tanker truck rollover avoidance.

Evaluation of Strain Rate-Sensitive Constitutive Models for Simulation of Servo Stamping: Part 1 Theory

Strain-rate sensitivity has been neglected in the simulation of the traditional stamping process because the strain rate typically does not significantly impact the forming behavior of sheet metals in such a quasi-static process, and traditional crank or link mechanical presses lack the flexibility of slide motion. However, the recent application of servo drive presses in stamping manifests improvement in formability and reduction of springback, besides increased productivity and energy savings. An accurate simulation of servo stamping entails constitutive models with strain-rate sensitivity. This study evaluated a few strain rate-sensitive models including the power-law model, the linear power-law model, the Johnson-Cook model, and the Cowper-Symonds model through the exercise of fitting these models to the experimental data of a deep draw quality (DDQ) steel.

This SAE EDGE™ Research Report explores how the deployment of automated vehicles (AVs) will affect the insurance industry and the principles of liability that underly the structure of insurance in the US. As we trade human drivers for suites of sensors and computers, who (or what) is responsible when there is a crash? The owner of the vehicle? The automaker that built it? The programmer that wrote the code? Insurers have over 100 years of experience and data covering human drivers, but with only a few years’ worth of information on AVs – how can they properly predict the true risks associated with their deployment? Without an understanding of the nature and risks of AVs, how can the government agencies that regulate the insurance industry provide proper oversight? Do the challenges AVs present require a total reworking of our insurance and liability systems, or can our current structures be adapted to fit them with minor modifications?
