Reduction of Flow-induced Noise in Refrigeration Cycles

In electrified vehicles, auxiliary units can be a dominant source of noise, one of which is the refrigerant scroll compressor. Compared to vehicles with combustion engines, e-vehicles require larger refrigerant compressors, as in addition to the interior, also the battery and the electric motors have to be cooled. Currently, scroll compressors are widely used in the automotive industry, which generate one pressure pulse per revolution due to their discontinuous compression principle. This results in speed-dependent pressure fluctuations as well as higher-harmonic pulsations that arise from reflections. These fluctuations spread through the refrigeration cycle and cause the vibration excitation of refrigerant lines and heat exchangers. The sound transmission path in the air conditioning heat exchanger integrated in the dashboard is particularly critical. Various silencer configurations can be used to dampen these pulsations.

Challenges of measuring low levels of CO2 and NOx on H2-ICE

Society is moving towards climate neutrality where hydrogen fuelled combustion engines (H2 ICE) could be considered a main technology. These engines run on hydrogen (H2) so carbon-based emission are only present at a very low level from the lube oil. The most important pollutants NO and NO2 are caused by the exhaust aftertreatment system as well as CO2 coming from the ambient air. For standard measurement technologies these low levels of CO2 are hard to detect due to the high water content. Normal levels of CO2 are between 400-500 ppm which is very close or even below the detection limit of commonly used non-dispersive-infrared-detectors (NDIR). As well the high water content is very challenging for NOx measuring devices, like chemiluminescence detectors (CLD), where it results in higher noise and therefore a worse detection limit. Even for Fourier-transformed-infrared-spectroscopy-analysers (FT-IR) it is challenging to deal with water content over 15% without increased noise.

Comparing the NVH behaviour of an innovative steel-wood hybrid battery housing design to an all aluminium design

The production of electric vehicles (EVs) has a significant environmental impact, with up to 50 % of their lifetime greenhouse gas potential attributed to manufacturing processes. The use of sustainable materials in EV design is therefore crucial for reducing their overall carbon footprint. Wood laminates have emerged as a promising alternative due to their renewable nature. Additionally, wood-based materials offer unique damping properties that can contribute to improved Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics. In comparison to conventional materials such as aluminum, ply wood structures exhibit beneficial damping properties. The loss factor of plywood structures with a thickness below 20 mm ranges from 0.013 to 0.032. Comparable aluminum structures however exhibit only a fraction of this loss factor with a range between 0.002 and 0.005.

Coordinated Charging and Dispatching for Large-Scale Electric Taxi Fleets Based on Bi-Level Spatiotemporal Optimization

The operation management of electric Taxi fleets requires cooperative optimization of Charging and Dispatching. The challenge is to make real-time decisions about which is the optimal charging station or passenger for each vehicle in the fleet. With the rapid advancement of Vehicle Internet of Things (VIOT) technologies, the aforementioned challenge can be readily addressed by leveraging big data analytics and machine learning algorithms, thereby contributing to smarter transportation systems. This study focuses on optimizing real-time decision-making for charging and dispatching in large-scale electric taxi fleets to improve their long-term benefits. To achieve this goal, a spatiotemporal decision framework using Bi-level optimization is proposed. Initially, a deep reinforcement learning-based model is built to estimate the value of charging and order dispatching under uncertainty.

Research on Automatic Removal of Outliers in Fuel Cell Test Data and Fitting Method of Polarization Curve

Fuel cell vehicles have always garnered a lot of attention in terms of energy utilization and environmental protection. In the analysis of fuel cell performance, there are usually some outliers present in the raw experimental data that can significantly affect the data analysis results. Therefore, data cleaning work is necessary to remove these outliers. The polarization curve is a crucial tool for describing the basic characteristics of fuel cells, typically described by semi-empirical formulas. The parameters in these semi-empirical formulas are fitted using the raw experimental data, so how to quickly and effectively automatically identify and remove data outliers is a crucial step in the process of fitting polarization curve parameters. This article explores data-cleaning methods based on the Local Outlier Factor (LOF) algorithm and the Isolation Forest algorithm to remove data outliers.

4D Radar-Inertial SLAM based on Factor Graph Optimization

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) plays a key role in autonomous driving. Recently, 4D Radar has attracted widespread attention because it breaks through the limitations of 3D millimeter wave radar and can simultaneously detect the distance, velocity, horizontal azimuth and elevation azimuth of the target with high resolution. However, there are few studies on 4D Radar in SLAM. In this paper, RI-FGO, a 4D Radar-Inertial SLAM method based on Factor Graph Optimization, is proposed. The RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) method is used to eliminate the dynamic obstacle points from a single scan, and the ego-motion velocity is estimated from the static point cloud. A 4D Radar velocity factor is constructed in GTSAM to receive the estimated velocity in a single scan as a measurement and directly integrated into the factor graph. The 4D Radar point clouds of consecutive frames are matched as the odometry factor.

Braking Judder Test and Simulation Analysis of Commercial Vehicle

Brake judder affects vehicle safety and comfort, making it a key area of research in brake NVH. Transfer path analysis is effective for analyzing and reducing brake judder. However, current studies mainly focus on passenger cars, with limited investigation into commercial vehicles. The complex chassis structures of commercial vehicles involve multiple transfer paths, resulting in extensive data and testing challenges. This hinders the analysis and suppression of brake judder using transfer path analysis. In this study, we propose a simulation-based method to investigate brake judder transfer paths in commercial vehicles. Firstly, road tests were conducted to investigate the brake judder of commercial vehicles. Time-domain analysis, order characteristics analysis, and transfer function analysis between components were performed.

Assessing the Effects of Computational Model Parameters on Aerodynamic Noise Characteristics of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Turbocharger Compressor at Full Operating Conditions

In recent years, with the development of computing infrastructure and methods, the potential of numerical methods to reasonably predict aerodynamic noise in turbocharger compressors of heavy-duty diesel engines has increased. However, aerodynamic acoustic modeling of complex geometries and flow systems is currently immature, mainly due to the greater challenges in accurately characterizing turbulent viscous flows. Therefore, recent advances in aerodynamic noise calculations for automotive turbocharger compressors were reviewed and a quantitative study of the effects for turbulence models (Shear-Stress Transport (SST) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES)) and time-steps (2° and 4°) in numerical simulations on the performance and acoustic prediction of a compressor under various conditions were investigated.

Analysis and Design of Suspension State Observer for Wheel Load Estimation

Tire forces and moments play an important role in vehicle dynamics and safety. X-by-wire chassis components including active suspension, electronic powered steering, by-wire braking, etc can take the tire forces as inputs to improve vehicle’s dynamic performance. In order to measure the accurate dynamic wheel load, most of the researches focused on the kinematic parameters such as body longitudinal and lateral acceleration, load transfer and etc. In this paper, the authors focus on the suspension system, avoiding the dependence on accurate mass and aerodynamics model of the whole vehicle. The geometry of the suspension is equated by the spatial parallel mechanism model (RSSR model), which improves the calculation speed while ensuring the accuracy. A suspension force observer is created, which contains parameters including spring damper compression length, push rod force, knuckle accelerations, etc., combing the kinematic and dynamic characteristic of the vehicle.

Performance Parity Study of Electrified Class 8 Semi Trucks with Diesel Counterparts

It is recognized that the heavier vehicles, the more emissions, thus the more imperative to electrify. In this study, long haul heavy-duty trucks are referred as HDTs, which are recognized as one of the hard-to-electrify vehicle segments, though the automotive industry has gained trending advantages of electrifying both light-duty cars and SUVs. Since big rigs such as Class 8 HDTs have significant road-block challenges for electrification due to the demanding long-hour work cycles in all weathers, this study focuses on quantifying those electrification challenges by taking advantage of the public data of Class 8 tractors & trailers. Tesla Semi is the research target though its vehicle spec data is sorted out with fragmentary information in the public domain. The key task is to analyze the battery capacity requirements due to environmental temperature and inherent aging over the lifespan.

Rapid assessment of power battery states for electric vehicles oriented to after-sales maintenance

With the continuous popularization of electric vehicles (EVs), ensuring the best performance of EVs has become a significant concern, and lithium-ion power batteries are considered as the essential storage and conversion equipment for EVs. Therefore, it is of great significance to quickly evaluate the state of power batteries. This paper investigates a fast state estimation method of power batteries oriented to after-sales and maintenance. Based on the battery equivalent circuit model and heuristics optimization algorithm, the battery model parameters, including the internal ohmic and polarization resistance, can be identified using only 30 minutes of charging or discharging process data without full charge or discharge. At the same time, the proposed method can directly estimate the state of charge (SOC) and maximum available capacity of the battery without knowing initial SOC information.

Efficient Fatigue Performance Dominated Optimization Method for Heavy-Duty Vehicle Suspension Brackets under Proving Ground Load

Lightweight design is a key factor in general engineering design practice, however, it often conflicts with fatigue durability. This paper presents a way for improving the effectiveness of fatigue performance dominated optimization, demonstrated through a case study on suspension brackets for heavy-duty vehicles. This case study is based on random load data collected from fatigue durability tests in proving grounds, and fatigue failures of the heavy-duty vehicle suspension brackets were observed and recorded during the tests. Multi-objective fatigue optimization was introduced by employing multiaxial time-domain fatigue analysis under random loads combined with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II with archives.

As a key component of in-vehicle intelligent voice technology, speech enhancement can extract clean speech signals contaminated by environmental noise to improve the perceptual quality and intelligibility of speech. It has extensive applications in the field of intelligent car cabins. Although some end-to-end speech enhancement methods based on time domain have been proposed, there is often limited consideration given to designing model architectures based on the characteristics of the speech signal. In this paper, we propose a new U-Net based speech enhancement framework that utilizes the temporal correlation of speech signals to reconstruct higher-quality and more intelligible clean speech.

In an era characterized by the rapid proliferation and advancement of AI-based technologies across various domains, the spotlight is placed on the integration of these technologies into trustworthy autonomous systems. The integration into embedded systems necessitates a heightened focus on dependability. This paper combines the findings from the TEACHING project, which delves into the foundations of humanistic AI concepts, with insights derived from an expert workshop in the field of dependability engineering. We establish the body of knowledge and key findings deliberated upon during an expert workshop held at an international conference focused on computer safety, reliability and security. The dialogue makes it evident that despite advancements, the assurance of dependability in AI-driven systems remains an unresolved challenge, lacking a one-size-fits-all solution.

Combustion and HC&PN Emission Characteristics at First Cycle Starting of Gasoline Engine under Lean Burn Based on Active Pre-Chamber

As a novel ignition technology, pre-chamber ignition can enhance ignition energy, promote flame propagation, and augment turbulence. However, this technology undoubtedly faces challenges, particularly in the context of emission regulations. Of this study, the transient characteristics of combustion and emissions in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) gasoline engine with active pre-chamber ignition (PCI) under the first combustion cycle of quick start are focused. The results demonstrate that the PCI engine is available on the first cycle for lean combustion, such as lambda 1.6 to 2.0, and exhibit particle number (PN) below 7×107 N/mL at the first cycle. These particles are predominantly composed of nucleation mode (NM, <50 nm) particles, with minimal accumulation mode (AM, >50 nm) particles.

Coordinated Longitudinal and Lateral Motions Control of Automated Vehicles Based on Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning for On-Ramp Merging

The on-ramp merging driving scenario is challenging for achieving the highest-level autonomous driving. Current research using reinforcement learning methods to address the on-ramp merging problem of automated vehicles (AVs) is mainly designed for a single AV, treating other vehicles as part of the environment. This paper proposes a control framework for cooperative on-ramp merging of multiple AVs based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL). This framework facilitates AVs on the ramp and adjacent mainline to learn a coordinate control policy for their longitudinal and lateral motions based on the environment observations. Unlike the hierarchical architecture, this paper integrates decision and control into a unified optimal control problem to solve an on-ramp merging strategy through MADRL.

Risk field enhanced game theoretic model for interpretable and consistent lane-changing decision makings

This paper presents an integrated modeling approach for real-time discretionary lane-changing decisions by autonomous vehicles, aiming to achieve human-like behavior. The approach incorporates a two-player normal-form game and a novel risk field method. The normal-form game represents the strategic interactions among traffic participants. It captures the trade-offs between lane-changing benefits and risks based on vehicle motion states during a lane change. By continuously determining the Nash equilibrium of the game at each time step, the model decides when it is appropriate to change the lane. A novel risk field method is integrated with the game to model risks in the game pay-offs. The risk field introduces regions along the desired target lane with different time headway ranges and risk weights, capturing traffic participants' complex risk perceptions and considerations in lane-changing scenarios.

Combining Dynamic Movement Primitives and Artificial Potential Fields for Lane Change Obstacle Avoidance Trajectory Planning of Autonomous Vehicles

Lane change obstacle avoidance is a common driving scenario for autonomous vehicles. However, existing methods for lane change obstacle avoidance in vehicles decouple path and velocity planning, neglecting the coupling relationship between the path and velocity. Additionally, these methods often do not sufficiently consider the lane change behaviors characteristic of human drivers. In response to these challenges, this paper innovatively applies the Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) algorithm to vehicle trajectory planning and proposes a real-time trajectory planning method that integrates DMPs and Artificial Potential Fields (APFs) algorithm (DMP-Fs) for lane change obstacle avoidance, enabling rapid coordinated planning of both path and velocity. The DMPs algorithm is based on the lane change trajectories of human drivers. Therefore, this paper first collected lane change trajectory samples from on-road vehicle experiments.

A MPC based Cooperated Control Strategy for Enhanced Agility and Stability of Four-Wheel Steering and Drive Electric Vehicles

Multiple actuators equipped in electric vehicles, such as four- wheel steering (4WS) and four-wheel drive (4WD), provide more degrees of freedom for chassis motion control. However, developing independent control strategies for distinct actuator types could result in control conflicts, potentially degrading the vehicle's motion performance. To address this issue, a model predictive control (MPC) based steering-drive cooperated control strategy for enhanced agility and stability of electric vehicles with 4WD and 4WS is proposed in this paper. By designing the control constraints within the MPC framework, the strategy enables single-drive control, single-steering control, and steering-drive cooperative control. In the upper control layer, a linear time-varying MPC (LTV-MPC) is designed to generate optimal additional yaw moment and additional steering angles of front and rear wheels to enhance vehicle agility and lateral stability.
