Investigation of Fuel Economy Prediction Technology Considering Engine Thermal Flow for Hybrid Electric Vehicle, and Application to Vehicle Development Process

Powertrain development requires an efficient development process with no rework and model-based development (MBD). In addition, to performance design that achieves low CO2 emissions is also required. Furthermore, it also demands fuel economy performance considering real-world usage conditions, and in North America, the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) 5-cycle, which evaluates performance in a combination of various environments, is applied. This evaluation mode necessitates predicting performance while considering engine heat flow. Particularly, simulation technology that considers behavior based on engine temperature for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is necessary. Additionally, in the development trend of vehicle aerodynamic improvement, variable devices like Active Grille Shutter (AGS) are utilized to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.

GRC-Net: Fusing GAT-Based 4D Radar and Camera for 3D Object Detection

The fusion of multi-modal perception in autonomous driving plays a pivotal role in vehicle behavior decision-making. However, much of the previous research has predominantly focused on the fusion of Lidar and cameras. Although Lidar offers an ample supply of point cloud data, its high cost and the substantial volume of point cloud data can lead to computational delays. Consequently, investigating perception fusion under the context of 4D millimeter-wave radar is of paramount importance for cost reduction and enhanced safety. Nevertheless, 4D millimeter-wave radar faces challenges including sparse point clouds, limited information content, and a lack of fusion strategies. In this paper, we introduce, for the first time, an approach that leverages Graph Neural Networks to assist in expressing features from 4D millimeter-wave radar point clouds. This approach effectively extracts unstructured point cloud features, addressing the loss of object detection due to sparsity.

Hollow Shaft Liquid Cooling Method for Performance Improvement of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Used in Electric Vehicles

Operating condition of rotor embedded magnet materials for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) critically affect electric vehicle (EV) range and dynamic characteristics. The rotor liquid cooling technique has a deep influence on PMSM performance improvement, and begin to be studied and applied increasingly in EV field. Here, the fluid, thermal, and electromagnetic characteristics of motor with and without hollow-shaft cooling are researched comprehensively based on 100 kW PMSM with housing water jacket (HWJ) and hollow-shaft rotor water jacket (SWJ). The solid models are constructed considering temperature-dependent power loss and anisotropic thermal conductivity. After the fluid models are set up by using Reynolds stress model (RSM), conjugate heat transfer is conducted through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, and is verified by real PMSM test bench experiments.

Development of Active Noise Control System Optimized for Road Noise Reduction

In this paper, a newly developed Active Noise Control (ANC) system is introduced, that effectively reduces road noise, which becomes a major issue with electrified vehicles, and that enhances vehicle interior sound levels matching seamless acceleration by electric drive. Conventionally, reducing road noise using ANC requires numerous sensors and speakers, as well as a processor with high computing power. Therefore, the increase in system cost and the complexity of the system are obstacles to its spread. To overcome these issues, this system is developed based on four concepts. The first is a modular system configuration with unified interface to apply to various vehicle types and grades. The second is the integration and optimal placement of noise source reference sensors to achieve both reduction in number of parts and noise reduction performance.

Research on Regenerative Braking Control Strategy under High Charge State Using Prescribed Performance Prediction Control

To reduce the energy consumption level of electric vehicles, the working range of the regenerative braking system will gradually expand to the high state of charge of the battery. The time delay in the control signal transmission path of the high state of charge regenerative braking control process will affect the regenerative braking. At the same time, regenerative braking under a high state of charge puts forward higher requirements for the control accuracy of regenerative current. In the research of this paper, the motor model, battery model, and vehicle dynamics model are firstly established by using MATLAB/Simulink, and the dynamic relationship between regenerative current and regenerative braking torque is analyzed at the same time. Considering the system time delay, this paper proposes a high-charge regenerative braking control strategy (SPPC) that combines Smith prediction and prescribed performance control.

Research on Performance of Pulsed Twin-Fluid Injector and Its Application on a Spark Ignition UAV Engine

The principal objective of the present work is to investigate the fundamental characteristics of a commercially available outwardly opening twin-fluid injector, which utilizes air-assisted atomization principle to attain pulse-type injection of fuel-air mixture. The electromagnetic characteristics of this injector were simulated and the effects of dominating parameters on the electromagnetic force to drive injector were ascertained. On that basis, this paper elaborates on the fundamental characteristics of air-assisted spray using gasoline and kerosene with the employment of two types of optical testing techniques. The spray morphological evolution under varied fuel injection durations and ambient pressures were captured with high-speed shadowgraph thus the corresponding external macroscopic characteristics were obtained and further compared. Spray droplet velocity and diameter at fixed monitoring location were measured by using PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer).

Numerical Simulation and Optimization for Combustion of an Opposed Piston Two-Stroke Engine for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An opposed piston two-stroke engine is more suitable for use in an unmanned aerial vehicle because of its small size, excellent self-balancing, stable operation, and low noise. Consequently, in this study, based on experimental data for a prototype opposed piston two-stroke engine, numerical simulation models were established using GT-POWER for 1D simulation and AVL-FIRE for 3D CFD simulation. The mesh grid and solver parameters for the numerical model of the CFD simulation were determined to guarantee the accuracy of the numerical simulation, before studying and optimizing the ventilation efficiency of the engine with different dip angles. Furthermore, the fuel spray and combustion were analyzed and optimized in details.

This report will introduce a new engine sound design concept and propose a design process. In sound design for automotive development of popular vehicles, it is common to seek to enhance the state of the existing marketed vehicle in order to meet further demands from customers. For standout models such as sports vehicles and flagship vehicles, sound design commonly reflects the sound ideals of the manufacturer’s branding or engineers. Each case has common point that the sound direction is determined by itself clearly. However, in this way, it is difficult to create abstract concept sound. Because it is no direction for the sound. Therefore, this paper examines ways to achieve a new sound that satisfies a sound concept based on an unprecedented abstract concept “wood”. The reason why sound concept is “wood”, it is the difficult to make as a new engine sound and good study to reveal usefulness of new sound design process.

Development of Cooling Fan Model and Heat Exchange Model of Condenser to Predict the Cooling and the Heat Resistance Performance of Vehicle

The cooling performance and the heat resistance performance of commercial vehicle are balanced with aerodynamic performance, output power of powertrain, styling, cost and many other parameters. Therefore, it is desired to predict the cooling performance and the heat resistance performance with high accuracy at the early stage of development. Among the three basic forms of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation), solving thermal conduction accurately is difficult, because modeling of “correct shape” and setting of coefficient of thermal conductivity for each material need many of time and efforts at the early stage of development. Correct shape means that each part should be attached correctly to generate the solid mesh with high quality. Therefore, it is more efficient and realistic method to predict the air temperature distribution around the rubber/resin part instead of using the surface temperature at the preliminary design stage.

Multi-Scale Structural Analysis on Rubber Seal for Battery Pack

A rubber sealing for a water-cooled battery pack plays a significant role to prevent water immersion into the inside of the pack. The appropriate design including the adjacent parts achieves a weight reduction of the battery pack by reducing the battery tray thickness and the quantity of bolts used in the whole battery pack. Generally, finite element analysis (FEA) is effective for the design optimization before proto-typing. However, the application to the sealing for a battery pack requires a large scale analysis, including the complicated contacts and large deformation of the rubber sealing, and results in unpractically long computation time and frequent computation errors due to the finite element distortion. A multi-scale structural analysis and the process on the rubber sealing for the battery pack has been developed to solve the above issues. This approach consists of 3 steps, which are single-unit, entire-scale and detailed structural analysis.

Powertrain Thermal System Development for Small BEV

The dynamic performance of battery electric vehicles (BEV) is affected by battery output power, which depends on state of charge (SOC) and the temperature of battery cells. The temperature of the batteries varies in particular with the environment, in which the user stores the vehicle, and the battery output power. It is therefore necessary to employ thermal management systems that can control the battery temperature within the optimal range under severely hot and cold conditions in BEVs. A highly sophisticated thermal management system and its operation strategy were developed to fulfill the above requirements. The powertrain components to be thermo-controlled were located into two coolant circuits having different temperature range. The compact and efficient front-end heat exchangers were designed to optimally balance the cooling performance of powertrain, cabin comfort, vehicle aerodynamics and the vehicle design.

Multi-Objective Optimization of Control Parameters for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Using 1D CAE Model

Since the operation of the powertrain system and the engine speed and torque are determined in the ECU in hybrid vehicles, control parameters in these vehicles are more sensitive to a variety of performance factors than those employed in conventional vehicles. The three performance factors acceleration performance, NVH and fuel consumption in particular are in a tradeoff relationship, the calibration of control parameters in order to satisfy these performance targets entail considerable development costs. Given this, it is possible to increase the efficiency of hybrid vehicle development by determining Pareto design solutions for the three performance factors via multi-objective optimization using CAE, and selecting target performance and control parameters based on these Pareto design solutions.

Estimating a Rider’s Compensatory Control Actions by Vehicle Dynamics Simulation to Evaluate Controllability Class in ISO 26262

Controllability is defined in ISO 26262 as a driver’s ability to avoid a specified harm caused by a malfunction of electrical and electronic systems installed in road vehicles. According to Annex C of Part 12 of ISO 26262, simulation is one of the techniques that the Controllability Classification Panel (CCP) can use to evaluate comprehensively the controllability class (C class) of motorcycles. With outputs of (i) an index for the success of harm avoidance and (ii) the magnitude of the rider’s compensatory control action required to avoid harm, the simulation is useful for evaluating the C class of the degrees of malfunction that cannot be implemented in practice for the sake of the test rider’s safety. To aim at supplying data that the CCP can use to judge the C class, we try to estimate the vehicle behavior and a rider’s compensatory control actions following a malfunction using vehicle dynamics simulations.

Research of the High Altitude Control Strategy of the Piston Aero-engine Using Two-stage Turbocharger Coupled with single Supercharging System

Aiming at the high altitude operation problems for piston-type aero-engines and to improve the practical ceiling and high altitude dynamic performance, this thesis analyzes a controllable three-stage composite supercharging system, using a two-stage turbocharger coupled supercharger method. The GT-Power simulation model of a four-cylinder boxer engine was established, and the control strategy of variable flight height was obtained. The simulation research of engine performance from 0 to 20,000 meters above sea level has been carried out, which shows that the engine power is at the same level as the plain condition, and it could still maintain 85.28 percent of power even at the height of 20,000 meters, which meets the flight requirements of the aircraft.

An Investigation of a Reduction Method of the Body Vibration at a Situation of Engine Start-Stop

In recent years, electrification of powertrains has been promoted to improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. Along with electrification, it is possible to reduce engine usage frequency and improve the fuel efficiency in traveling. Especially in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the state changes from motor assist mode to engine firing mode. As a result, stay time in eigenvalue of a powertrain is shortened, and vibration of the vehicle body at the engine start situation is able to be reduced as compared with conventional engine-driven vehicle. However, since the HEV is equipped with a high compression ratio engine for improving fuel economy, there is cause for concern that excitation force generated by the powertrain at the time of engine start increases. Also, the vehicle body vibration at engine start situations requires further consideration, because the operation frequency of engine decreases.

Development of Motor with Heavy Rare Earth-Free Magnet for Two-Motor Hybrid System

Conventional HEV motors use neodymium magnets with added heavy rare earths, to realize high output and size reduction. However, deposits of heavy rare earths such as Dysprosium (Dy) and Terbium (Tb) are unevenly distributed, so it is important to reduce the amount used, because of supply issue and material cost. In this paper, the application of a heavy rare earth-free magnet is considered on the new motor for a two-motor hybrid system. Compared to conventional neodymium magnets, heavy rare earth free magnets tend to have low coercivity. Also, heavy rare earth-free magnet have low thermal durability, so it is not easy to apply them to motors for a two-motor hybrid system, which requires high output and small size. The motor requires twice as much torque and six times output than one-motor hybrid system. Increase demagnetization resistance and magnet cooling performance is studied by development of the new motor.

Simulation Techniques for Determining Motorcycle Controllability Class according to ISO 26262

The ISO 26262 standard specifies the requirement for functional safety of electrical and electronic systems within road vehicles. We have accumulated case studies based on actual riding tests by subjective judgment of expert riders to define a method for determining the controllability class (C class). However, the wide variety of practical traffic environments and vehicle behaviors in case of malfunction make it difficult to evaluate all C classes in actual running tests. Furthermore, under some conditions, actual riding tests may cause unacceptable risks to test riders. In Part 12 Annex C of ISO/DIS 26262, simulation is cited as an example of a technique for comprehensive evaluations by the Controllability Classification Panel. This study investigated the usefulness of mathematical simulations for evaluating the C class of a motorcycle reproducing a malfunction in either the front or rear brakes.

Study on Weave Behavior Simulation of Motorcycles Considering Vibration Characteristics of Whole Body of Rider

In motorcycles, the mass difference between a vehicle and a rider is small and motions of a rider impose a great influence on the vehicle behaviors as a consequence. Therefore, dynamic properties of motorcycles should be evaluated not merely dealing with a vehicle but considering with a man-machine system. In the studies of a simulation for vehicle dynamics, various types of rider models have been proposed and it has already been reported that rider motions have a significant influence on the dynamic properties. However, the mechanism of the interaction between a rider and a vehicle has not been clarified yet. In our study, we focused on weave motion and constructed a full vehicle simulation model that can reflect the influences of the movements of the rider’s upper body and lower body. To construct the rider model, we first measured the vibrational characteristics of a human body using a vibration test bench.

Development of Electric Powertrain for CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID

Honda has developed the 2018 model CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID. Honda’s new plug-in hybrid is a midsize sedan and shares a body platform with the CLARITY FUEL CELL and the CLARITY ELECTRIC. The vehicle’s electric powertrain boosts driving performance as an electric vehicle (EV) over Honda’s previous plug-in hybrid. The CLARITY PLUG-IN HYBRID’s electric powertrain consists of a traction motor and generator built into the transmission, a Power Control Unit (PCU) positioned above the transmission, an Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) fitted under the floor, and an onboard charger fitted below the rear trunk. The PCU integrates an inverter that drives the traction motor, an inverter that drives the generator, and a DC-DC converter to boost battery voltage (referred to as a “Voltage Control Unit (VCU)” below).

Study of Riding Assist Control Enabling Self-standing in Stationary State

In motorcycles traveling at medium to high speed, roll stability is usually maintained by restoration forces generated by a self-steering effect. However, when the vehicle is stationary or traveling in low speed, sufficient restoring force does not occur because some of the forces, such as centrifugal force, become small. In our study, we aimed at prototyping a motorcycle having roll stability when the vehicle is stationary or at low speed with a steering control for self-standing assist, while maintaining stability properties in medium to high speed. A model was built to represent dynamics of roll motion, which is composed of a fixed point mass located above the vehicle’s center of gravity and another movable point mass below that gravity center. According to the model, when steered, the roll moment direction generated by the shift of the movable point mass becomes the same as the direction generated by the ground contact point shift of the front tire.
