Pad Correction Estimation around 5 Belt Wind Tunnel Wheel Belts Using Pressure Tap Measurement and Mathematical Pressure Distribution Model

5 belt wind tunnels are the most common facility to conduct the experimental aerodynamics development for production cars. Among aerodynamic properties, usually drag is the most important development target, but lift force and its front/rear balance is also important for vehicle dynamics. Related to the lift measurement, it is known that the “pad correction”, the correction in the lift measurement values for the undesirable aerodynamic force acting on wheel belt surface around the tire contact patch, must be accounted. Due to the pad correction measurement difficulties, it is common to simply subtract a fixed amount of lift values from measured lift force. However, this method is obviously not perfect as the pad corrections are different for differing vehicle body shapes, aerodynamic configurations, tire sizes and shapes.

On Road Fuel Economy Impact by the Aerodynamic Specifications under the Natural Wind

According to some papers, the label fuel economy and the actual fuel economy experienced by the customers may exhibit a gap. One of the reasons may stem from the aerodynamic drag variations due to the natural wind. The fuel consumption is measured through bench test under several driving modes by using the road load as input condition. The road load is measured through the coast down test under less wind ambient conditions as determined by each regulation. The present paper aims to analyze the natural wind conditions encountered by the vehicle on public roads and to operate a comparison between the fuel consumptions and the driving energy. In this paper, the driving energy is calculated by the aerodynamic drag from the natural wind specifications and driving conditions. This driving energy and the fuel consumptions show good correlation. The fuel consumption is obtained from the vehicle Engine control unit(ECU) data.

Estimating a Rider’s Compensatory Control Actions by Vehicle Dynamics Simulation to Evaluate Controllability Class in ISO 26262

Controllability is defined in ISO 26262 as a driver’s ability to avoid a specified harm caused by a malfunction of electrical and electronic systems installed in road vehicles. According to Annex C of Part 12 of ISO 26262, simulation is one of the techniques that the Controllability Classification Panel (CCP) can use to evaluate comprehensively the controllability class (C class) of motorcycles. With outputs of (i) an index for the success of harm avoidance and (ii) the magnitude of the rider’s compensatory control action required to avoid harm, the simulation is useful for evaluating the C class of the degrees of malfunction that cannot be implemented in practice for the sake of the test rider’s safety. To aim at supplying data that the CCP can use to judge the C class, we try to estimate the vehicle behavior and a rider’s compensatory control actions following a malfunction using vehicle dynamics simulations.

MR20DD Motoring Fuel Economy Test for 0W-12 and 0W-8 Low Viscosity Engine Oil

The SAE J300 classification was expanded to 0W-12 and 0W-8 viscosity grades in 2015, and lower viscosity engine oils have been studied in the industry. ILSAC GF-6B that will be introduced in 2020 will specify a 0W-16 requirement, but 0W-12 and 0W-8 grades are not considered. Because engine oil equal to or higher than the 0W-20 grade is recommended for almost all engines globally, suitable engine tests for 0W-12 and 0W-8 do not exist. Therefore, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Petroleum Association of Japan and Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan decided to establish new 0W-12 and 0W-8 low viscosity engine oil specifications. It is referred to as JASO GLV-1, and together with a new fuel economy engine test procedure, these engine oils for better fuel economy will be put on the Japanese market in 2019. Motoring friction torque tests are widely used to ascertain the friction reduction effect of fuel-economy engine oils.

A Study of Vibration Reducing Effect on Vehicle Dynamics by Hydraulic Damper on Body Structure

This research investigated the mechanism of the effects of hydraulic dampers, which are attached to vehicle body structures and are known by experience to suppress vehicle body vibration and enhance ride comfort and steering stability. In investigating the mechanism, we employed quantitative data from riding tests, and analytical data from simplified vibration models. In our assessment of ride comfort in riding tests using vehicles equipped with hydraulic dampers, we confirmed effects reducing body floor vibration in the low-frequency range. We also confirmed vibration reduction in unsprung suspension parts to be a notable mechanical characteristic which merits close attention in all cases. To investigate the mechanism of the vibration reduction effect in unsprung parts, we considered a simplified vibration model, in which the engine and unsprung parts, which are rigid, are linked to the vehicle body, which is an elastic body equipped with hydraulic dampers.

Research on Technique for Correction of Running Resistance with Focus on Tire Temperature and Tire Thermal Balance Model

At present, measurements of running resistance are conducted outdoors as a matter of course. Because of this, the ambient temperature at the time of the measurements has a considerable impact on the measurement data. The research discussed in this paper focused on the temperature characteristic of the tires and developed a new correction technique using a special rolling test apparatus. Specifically, using a tire rolling test apparatus that made it possible to vary the ambient temperature, measurements were conducted while varying the levels of factors other than temperature that affect rolling resistance (load, inflation pressure, and speed). Next, a regression analysis was applied to the data for each factor, and coefficients for a relational expression were derived, making it possible to derive a quadratic equation for the tire rolling resistance correction formula.

Prediction Method of Snow Ingress Amount into the Engine Air Intake Duct Employing LES and Detailed Snow Accumulation Model

When a vehicle is driven in snowy conditions, if a proper air intake design is not adopted, the snow lifted by the leading vehicles may penetrate into the engine air intake, in case of large snow ingress amount, causing a power drop. The evaluation of such risk for the intake is carried out through climatic wind tunnel tests, which cannot be conducted at the early stage of vehicle development when the prototype vehicle does not exist. In order to study that risk prior to the prototype vehicle delivery, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which predicts the snow ingress amount accurately was established with taking into account unsteady air flow and snow accumulation. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was used to reproduce the unsteady flow field, leading to a good agreement of the flow downstream from the snow generator with the experimental one measured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). As for the snow particle behavior model, the Lagrangian method was chosen.

Study on Weave Behavior Simulation of Motorcycles Considering Vibration Characteristics of Whole Body of Rider

In motorcycles, the mass difference between a vehicle and a rider is small and motions of a rider impose a great influence on the vehicle behaviors as a consequence. Therefore, dynamic properties of motorcycles should be evaluated not merely dealing with a vehicle but considering with a man-machine system. In the studies of a simulation for vehicle dynamics, various types of rider models have been proposed and it has already been reported that rider motions have a significant influence on the dynamic properties. However, the mechanism of the interaction between a rider and a vehicle has not been clarified yet. In our study, we focused on weave motion and constructed a full vehicle simulation model that can reflect the influences of the movements of the rider’s upper body and lower body. To construct the rider model, we first measured the vibrational characteristics of a human body using a vibration test bench.

Study of Riding Assist Control Enabling Self-standing in Stationary State

In motorcycles traveling at medium to high speed, roll stability is usually maintained by restoration forces generated by a self-steering effect. However, when the vehicle is stationary or traveling in low speed, sufficient restoring force does not occur because some of the forces, such as centrifugal force, become small. In our study, we aimed at prototyping a motorcycle having roll stability when the vehicle is stationary or at low speed with a steering control for self-standing assist, while maintaining stability properties in medium to high speed. A model was built to represent dynamics of roll motion, which is composed of a fixed point mass located above the vehicle’s center of gravity and another movable point mass below that gravity center. According to the model, when steered, the roll moment direction generated by the shift of the movable point mass becomes the same as the direction generated by the ground contact point shift of the front tire.

ISO 26262 C Class Evaluation Method for Motorcycles by Expert Riders Incorporating Technical Knowledge Obtained from Actual Riding Tests

In applying the ISO 26262 controllability classification for motorcycles in actual riding tests, a subjective evaluation by expert riders is considered to be the appropriate approach from the viewpoint of safety. We studied the construction of an expert-rider-based C class evaluation method for motorcycles and developed some evaluation test cases reproducing various hazardous events. We determined that it was necessary to accumulate more evaluation cases for further representative scenarios and that, to avoid variations in such evaluations, a method in which different expert riders can carry out testing following a common understanding had to be devised. Considering these problems for practical application, this study aimed at establishing an actual riding test method for C class evaluation by expert riders and to develop a deeper understanding of test procedures and management.

Study of High Power Dynamic Charging System

The use of electric vehicles (EV) is becoming more widespread as a response to global warming. The major issues associated with EV are the annoyance represented by charging the vehicles and their limited cruising range. In an attempt to remove the restrictions on the cruising range of EV, the research discussed in this paper developed a dynamic charging EV and low-cost infrastructure that would make it possible for the vehicles to charge by receiving power directly from infrastructure while in motion. Based on considerations of the effect of electromagnetic waves, charging power, and the amount of power able to be supplied by the system, this development focused on a contact-type charging system. The use of a wireless charging system would produce concerns over danger due to the infiltration of foreign matter into the primary and secondary coils and the health effects of leakage flux.

Construction of an ISO 26262 C Class Evaluation Method for Motorcycles

For applying ISO 26262 to motorcycles, controllability classification (C class evaluation) by expert riders is considered an appropriate technique. Expert riders have evaluated commercial product development for years and can appropriately conduct vehicle tests while observing safety restrictions (such as avoiding the risk of falling). Moreover, expert riders can ride safely and can stably evaluate motorcycle performance even if the test conditions are close to the limits of vehicle performance. This study aims to construct a motorcycle C class evaluation method based on an expert rider’s subjective evaluation. On the premise that expert riders can rate the C class, we improved a test procedure that used a subjective evaluation sheet as the concrete C class evaluation method for an actual hazardous event.

Aerodynamic Performance Evaluation System at the Early Concept Stage of Automotive Styling Development Based on CFD

An aerodynamic styling evaluation system employed at an early automotive development stage was constructed. The system based on CFD consists of exterior model morphing, computational mesh generation, flow calculation and result analysis, and the process is automatically and successively executed by process automation software. Response surfaces and a parallel coordinates chart output by the system allow users to find a well-balanced exterior form, in terms of aerodynamics and exterior styling, in a wide design space which are often arduous to be obtained by a conventional CAE manner and scale model wind tunnel testing. The system was designed so that 5-parameter study is completed within approximately two days, and consequently, has been widely applied to actual exterior styling development. An application for a hatchback vehicle is also introduced as an actual example.

New Theoretical Approach for Weight Reduction on Cylinder Head

Designing a lightweight and durable engine is universally important from the standpoints of fuel economy, vehicle dynamics and cost. However, it is challenging to theoretically find an optimal solution which meets both requirements in products such as the cylinder head, to which various thermal loads and mechanical loads are simultaneously applied. In our research, we focused on “non-parametric optimization” and attempted to establish a new design approach derived from the weight reduction of a cylinder head. Our optimization process consists of topology optimization and shape optimization. In the topology optimization process, we explored an optimal structure with the theoretically-highest stiffness in the given design space. This is to provide an efficient structure for pursuing both lightweight and durable characteristics in the subsequent shape optimization process.

The Predictive Simulation of Exhaust Pipe Narrow-band Noise

A method of predictive simulation of flow-induced noise using computational fluid dynamics has been developed. The goal for the developed method was application in the vehicle development process, and the target of the research was therefore set as balancing the realization of a practical level of predictive accuracy and a practical computation time. In order to simulate flow-induced noise, it is necessary to compute detailed eddy flows and changes in the density of the air. In the research discussed in this paper, the occurrence or non-occurrence of flow-induced noise was predicted by conducting unsteady compressible flow calculation using large eddy simulation, a type of turbulence model. The target flow-induced noise for prediction was narrow-band noise, a type of noise in which sound increases in specific frequency ranges.

Study of Reproducibility of Pedal Tracking and Detection Response Task to Assess Driver Distraction

We have developed a bench test method to assess driver distraction caused by the load of using infotainment systems. In a previous study, we found that this method can be used to assess the task loads of both visual-manual tasks and auditory-vocal tasks. The task loads are assessed using the performances of both pedal tracking task (PT) and detection response task (DRT) while performing secondary tasks. We can perform this method using simple equipment such as game pedals and a PC. The aim of this study is to verify the reproducibility of the PT-DRT. Experiments were conducted in three test environments in which test regions, experimenters and participants differed from each other in the US, and the test procedures were almost the same. We set two types of visual-manual tasks and two types of auditory-vocal tasks as secondary tasks and set two difficulties for each task type to vary the level of task load.

Influence of the Upper Body of Pedestrians on Lower Limb Injuries and Effectiveness of the Upper Body Compensation Method of the FlexPLI

Current legform impact test methods using the FlexPLI have been developed to protect pedestrians from lower limb injuries in collisions with low-bumper vehicles. For this type of vehicles, the influence of the upper body on the bending load generated in the lower limb is compensated by setting the impact height of the FlexPLI 50 mm above that of pedestrians. However, neither the effectiveness of the compensation method of the FlexPLI nor the influence of the upper body on the bending load generated in the lower limb of a pedestrian has been clarified with high-bumper vehicles. In this study, therefore, two computer simulation analyses were conducted in order to analyze: (1) The influence of the upper body on the bending load generated in the lower limb of a pedestrian when impacted by high-bumper vehicles and (2) The effectiveness of the compensation method for the lack of the upper body by increasing impact height of the FlexPLI for high-bumper vehicles.

The Thermal and Aerodynamic Development of a Cooling and Heat Resistance Package for a New Hybrid Sports Car

A sports car exhibits many challenges from an aerodynamic point of view: drag that limits top speed, lift - or down force - and balance that affects handling, brake cooling and insuring that the heat exchangers have enough air flowing through them under several vehicle speeds and ambient conditions. All of which must be balanced with a sports car styling and esthetic. Since this sports car applies two electric motors to drive front axle and a high-rev V6 turbo charged engine in series with a 9-speed double-clutch transmission and one electric motor to drive rear axle, additional cooling was required, yielding a total of ten air cooled-heat exchangers. It is also a challenge to introduce cooling air into the rear engine room to protect the car under severe thermal conditions. This paper focuses on the cooling and heat resistance concept.

Flow Field Analysis in the Development of the 2013 Model Year Accord Hybrid

There is a need to reduce vehicle's running resistance through aerodynamic performance in terms of having less negative impact on the global environment. In the Accord full model change, the package design is changed, so it is an opportunity to propose methods for improving aerodynamic performance. During the preliminary study, phenomenon analyses were conducted to identify areas that have a significant effect on aerodynamics by using a 25% scale model of the previous model. Based on more than 500 variation measurements as parameter study, the analysis was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A proposal was made to the package design. For development that began with the fundamental frame proposed in preliminary studies, wind tunnel testing using 25% scale model was conducted jointly with the Styling Design Office to achieve enhancement styling while also increasing aerodynamic performance.

Aerodynamic Development of the New Honda FIT/JAZZ

This paper discusses the characteristic flow field of the new Honda FIT/Jazz as determined from the aerodynamic development process, and introduces the technique that reduced aerodynamic drag in a full model change. The new FIT was the first model to take full advantage of the Flow Analysis Simulation tool (FAST), our in-house CFD system, in its development. The FAST system performs aerodynamic simulation by automatically linking the exterior surface design with a predefined platform layout. This allows engineers to run calculations efficiently, and the results can be shared among vehicle stylists and aerodynamicists. Optimization of the exterior design gives the new FIT a moderate pressure peak at the front bumper corner as compared to the previous model, resulting in a smaller pressure difference between the side and underbody.
