Leveraging the Internet to Drive a Real Car in the Virtual Earth 3D Model

Digital mapping tools have become indispensable for road navigation. Applications like Waze and Google Maps harness the power of satellite imagery to provide precise visualization of GPS coordinates. The field advanced significantly in May 2023 with the introduction of dynamic 3D representations of the Earth. Companies such as Cesium now offer Unity3D and Unreal Engine Application Programming Interface that can be applied to geospatial applications. These images are no longer static and offer the opportunity to provide seamless continuous navigation. Driving simulation has been widely used for training and research. We investigate with this project the potential of this new geospatial database as a tool for scenario development to study manual and autonomous driving. We present an in-vehicle driving simulation integration that employs a real steering wheel and pedals from a stationary vehicle as controls.

Robust EV Suspension Based on Compounded Motor Inerter Absorption

With a view to promote mobility electrification, improved comfort and handling with lower cost are crucial factors in next generation of EV and HEV design. In contrast to ICE platform, electrified counterparts displays distinct NVH characteristics that present challenges in terms of weight transfer, steering, motor vibrations, etc. From a holistic perspective, this paper proposes a compounded suspension system serving dual purpose of dynamic damping and power rejuvenation utilizing electric motor as part of the tuned mass damper inertia system. A variable inertance mechanism is developed in form of geartrain while motor vibration itself receives calculated harness through tuned mass damping. Furthermore, suspension deformation undergoes desirable mitigation as a result of effective simulated annealing optimization focused on shifting objective value according to input tradeoff prediction. Nonlinear system dynamics are considered as a means to broaden the damping bandwidth.

Vehicle Automation Emergency Scenario: Using a Driving Simulator to Assess the Impact of Hand and Foot Placement on Reaction Time

As vehicles with SAE level 2 of autonomy become more widely deployed, they still rely on the human driver to monitor the driving task and take control during emergencies. It is therefore necessary to examine the Human Factors affecting a driver’s ability to recognize and execute a steering or pedal action in response to a dangerous situation when the autonomous system abruptly requests human intervention. This research used a driving simulator to introduce the concept of level 2 autonomy to a cohort of 60 drivers (male: 48%, female: 52%) of different age groups (teens 16 to 19: 32%, adults: 35 to 54: 37%, seniors 65+: 32%). Participants were surveyed for their perspectives on self-driving vehicles. They were then assessed on a driving simulator that mimicked SAE level 2 of autonomy. Participants’ interaction with the HMI was studied.

Active Combustion Development Leveraging Injection Optimization with Exhaust Thermal Boost

This IC engine improvement addresses ICE’s inherent efficiency limit through innovative mechanical design of a consolidated system encompassing intake bypass and coordinating injection mechanism. In principle, the exhaust energy is recuperated to modulate intake temperature, in the meantime, multi-staged injection control is proposed that enhances in-cylinder thermal efficiency. To be specific, a CFD-optimized bypass is constructed alongside the intake and injection design which utilizes multi-stage variable mixing precisely, taking full advantage of exhaust temperature elevation. Regenerative heat gained through exhaust system gives rise to flexible amount of thermal dynamics adjustment to the intake, which consequently delivers more robust combustion efficiency as well as lower emission metrics. A flow control valve is developed at intake interface enables modular variable intake routing supporting engine efficiency promotion.

CFD Investigation of the Effects of Gas’ Methane Number on the Performance of a Heavy-Duty Natural-Gas Spark-Ignition Engine

Natural gas (NG) is an alternative fuel for spark-ignition engines. In addition to its cleaner combustion, recent breakthroughs in drilling technologies increased its availability and lowered its cost. NG consists of mostly methane, but it also contains heavier hydrocarbons and inert diluents, the levels of which vary substantially with geographical source, time of the year and treatments applied during production or transportation. To investigate the effects of NG composition on engine performance and emissions, a 3D CFD model of a heavy-duty diesel engine retrofitted to NG spark ignition simulated lean-combustion engine operation at low speed and medium load conditions. The work investigated three NG blends with similar lower heating value (i.e., similar energy density) but different Methane Number (MN). The results indicated that a lower MN increased flame propagation speed and thus increased in-cylinder pressure and indicated mean effective pressure.

Automotive Crashworthiness Design Optimization Based on Efficient Global Optimization Method

Finite element (FE) models are commonly used for automotive crashworthiness design. However, even with increasing speed of computers, the FE-based simulation is still too time-consuming when simulating the complex dynamic process such as vehicle crashworthiness. To improve the computational efficiency, the response surface model, as the surrogate of FE model, has been widely used for crashworthiness optimization design. Before introducing the surrogate model into the design optimization, the surrogate should satisfy the accuracy requirements. However, the bias of surrogate model is introduced inevitably. Meanwhile, it is also very difficult to decide how many samples are needed when building the high fidelity surrogate model for the system with strong nonlinearity. In order to solve the aforementioned problems, the application of a kind of surrogate optimization method called Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) is proposed to conduct the crashworthiness design optimization.

APEX: Autonomous Vehicle Plan Verification and Execution

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have already driven millions of miles on public roads, but even the simplest scenarios have not been certified for safety. Current methodologies for the verification of AV’s decision and control systems attempt to divorce the lower level, short-term trajectory planning and trajectory tracking functions from the behavioral rules-based framework that governs mid-term actions. Such analysis is typically predicated on the discretization of the state space and has several limitations. First, it requires that a conservative buffer be added around obstacles such that many feasible plans are classified as unsafe. Second, the discretized controllers modeled in this analysis require several refinement steps before being implementable on an actual AV, and typically do not allow the specification of comfort-related properties on the trajectories. Consumer-ready AVs use motion planning algorithms that generate smooth trajectories.

The Roles of Mechanical Compression and Chemical Irritation in Regulating Spinal Neuronal Signaling in Painful Cervical Nerve Root Injury

Both traumatic and slow-onset disc herniation can directly compress and/or chemically irritate cervical nerve roots, and both types of root injury elicit pain in animal models of radiculopathy. This study investigated the relative contributions of mechanical compression and chemical irritation of the nerve root to spinal regulation of neuronal activity using several outcomes. Modifications of two proteins known to regulate neurotransmission in the spinal cord, the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1), were assessed in a rat model after painful cervical nerve root injuries using a mechanical compression, chemical irritation or their combination of injury. Only injuries with compression induced sustained behavioral hypersensitivity (p≤0.05) for two weeks and significant decreases (p<0.037) in CGRP and GLT-1 immunoreactivity to nearly half that of sham levels in the superficial dorsal horn.

Finite Element Analysis of Composite Over-wrapped Pressure Vessels for Hydrogen Storage

This paper presents 3D finite element analysis performed for a composite cylindrical tank made of 6061-aluminum liner overwrapped with carbon fibers subjected to a burst internal pressure of 1610 bars. As the service pressure expected in these tanks is 700 bars, a factor of safety of 2.3 is kept the same for all designs. The optimal design configuration of such high pressure storage tanks includes an inner liner used as a gas permeation barrier, geometrically optimized domes, inlet/outlet valves with minimum stress concentrations, and directionally tailored exterior reinforcement for high strength and stiffness. Filament winding of pressure vessels made of fiber composite materials is the most efficient manufacturing method for such high pressure hydrogen storage tanks. The complexity of the filament winding process in the dome region is characterized by continually changing the fiber orientation angle and the local thickness of the wall.

Innovative Dense Lightweight Design for On-Board Hydrogen Storage Tank

The hydrogen economy envisioned in the future requires safe and efficient means of storing hydrogen fuel for either use on-board vehicles, delivery on mobile transportation systems or high-volume storage in stationary systems. The main emphasis of this work is placed on the high -pressure storing of gaseous hydrogen on-board vehicles. As a result of its very low density, hydrogen gas has to be stored under very high pressure, ranging from 350 to 700 bars for current systems, in order to achieve practical levels of energy density in terms of the amount of energy that can be stored in a tank of a given volume. Control and Testing of a 2-Mode Front-Wheel-Drive Hybrid-Electric Vehicle

The new General Motors 2-mode hybrid transmission for front-wheel-drive vehicles has been incorporated into a 2009 Saturn Vue by the West Virginia University EcoCAR team. The 2-mode hybrid transmission can operate in either one of two electrically variable transmission modes or four fixed gear modes although only the electrically variable modes were explored in this paper. Other major power train components include a GM 1.3L SDE turbo diesel engine fueled with B20 biodiesel and an A123 Systems 12.9 kWh lithium-ion battery system. Two additional vehicle controllers were integrated for tailpipe emission control, CAN message integration, and power train hybridization control. Control laws for producing maximum fuel efficiency were implemented and include such features as engine auto-stop, regenerative braking and optimized engine operation. The engine operating range is confined to a high efficiency area that improves the overall combined engine and electric motor efficiency.

Innovative Design Concepts for Lightweight Floors in Heavy Trailers

Currently, the chassis assembly contributes about 73 percent of the overall weight of a 14.63 m long haul trailer. This paper presents alternative design concepts for the structural floor of a van trailer utilizing sandwich panels with various material and geometric characteristics of the core layer in order to reduce its weight significantly below that of the current design configuration. The main objective of the new designs is to achieve optimal tradeoffs between the overall structural weight and the flexural stiffness of the floor. Various preliminary design concepts of the core designs were compared on the basis of a single section of the core structure. Six different designs were analyzed by weight, maximum displacement and maximum stress under bending and torsion loads. Each concept was kept uniform by length, thickness, loading and boundary conditions. Each design concept was examined through testing of scaled model for floor assemblies.

Performance Evaluation of Metal Matrix Composites Bolted Joints

Recent advances in Metal Matrix Composites have made them ready for transition to large-volume production and commercialization. Such new materials seem to allow the fabrication of higher quality parts at less than 50 percent of the weight as compared to steel. The increasing requirements of weight savings and extended durability motivated the potential application of MMC technology into the heavy vehicle market. However, significant technical barriers such as joining are likely to hinder the broad applications of MMC materials in heavy vehicles. The focus of this paper is to examine the feasibility of manufacturing and the behavior of bolted joint connections made from aluminum matrix reinforced with Silicon Carbide (SiC) particles. Two reinforcement ratios: 20% and 45% were considered in this study. The first part of the paper concentrates on experimental evaluation of bolted MMC joints.

Methods to Assess Jolting and Jarring Events: A Surface Mining Case Study to Evaluate the Jolt-Duration Method

When operating a piece of heavy equipment, the equipment operator is exposed to Whole Body Vibration (WBV), with peaks in the acceleration called jolting and jarring. Various published consensus standards exist to analyze overall WBV, but a consensus standard does not exist for describing, detecting, and categorizing the jolting and jarring peaks. During previous research into methods of measuring jolting and jarring, a Root Mean Square (RMS) method was implemented and deployed in jolting and jarring event meters called Shox Boxes (invented by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH). The RMS assessment was difficult for end users of the Shox Boxes to utilize for describing and categorizing the peaks. This paper offers a hypothetical standard, the Jolt-Duration (JD) method, based on the simple amplitude and duration of the peaks, as well as the time between peaks.

Finite Element Analysis for the Interface of a Respirator and the Human Face -A Pilot Study

Comfort assessment of respirator fit plays an important role in the respirator design process and standard development. To reduce the cost and design time of respirators, the design, fit, and evaluation process can be performed in a virtual environment. Literature shows that respirator-induced discomfort relates to stress, area, and region of the face covered. In this work, we investigate the relationship between the strap tensions and the stress and deformation distribution on the interface between the respirator and the headform. This is the first step towards a comprehensive understanding of the contribution of contact stress to the mathematical comfort fit model. The 3D digital models for respirators and headforms have been developed based on 3D scanning point-cloud using a Cyberware® 3D digitizer. Five digital headform models have been generated: small, medium, large, long and short.

The Role of Graded Nerve Root Compression on Axonal Damage, Neuropeptide Changes, and Pain-Related Behaviors

Rapid neck motions can load cervical nerve roots and produce persistent pain. This study investigated the cellular basis of radicular pain and mechanical implications of tissue loading rate. A range of peak loads was applied in an in vivo rat model of dorsal root compression, and mechanical allodynia (i.e., pain) was measured. Axonal damage and nociceptive mediators were assessed in the axons and cell bodies of compressed dorsal roots in separate groups of rats at days 1 and 7 after injury. In the day 7 group, damage in the compressed axons, evaluated by decreased heavy chain neurofilament immunoreactivity, was increased for compressions above a load of 34.08 mN, which is similar to the load-threshold for producing persistent pain in that model.

Digital Human Modeling Goals and Strategic Plans

Digital human modeling (DHM) progress worldwide will be much faster and cohesive if the diverse community now developing simulations has a global blueprint for DHM, and is able to work together efficiently. DHM developers and users can save time by building on each other's work. This paper highlights a panel discussion on DHM goals and strategic plans for the next decade to begin formulating the international blueprint. Four subjects are chosen as the starting points: (1) moving DHM into the public safety and internet arenas, (2) role of DHM in computer assisted surgery and automotive safety, (3) DHM in defense applications, and (4) DHM to improve workplace ergonomics.

A New Approach to Developing Digital 3-D Headforms

Facial measurements were collected during the 2003 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of 3,997 respirator users. In addition to traditional measuring techniques, 1013 subjects were scanned with a Cyberware 3-D Rapid Digitizer. Ten facial dimensions relevant to respirator fit were chosen for defining a principal component analysis (PCA) model which divides the user population into five face-size categories. Mean facial dimensions were then computed as a goal for a representative headform for each size category and used to identify 5 scans in each category. An average of the five scanned subjects was used to develop a single standard headform for each face-size category. Four digital 3-D models were developed: small, medium, large, and long. The new headforms include facial features not found on current standard headforms.

Development and Testing of a Tag-based Backup Warning System for Construction Equipment

Incidents in which a piece of construction equipment backed into a worker resulted in an average of 17 deaths per year at road construction sites and 15 deaths per year at building construction sites from 1997 through 2001. This trend continues and researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are evaluating methods to decrease these incidents. A new technology based on the detection of electronic identification tags worn by workers has been developed and evaluated at a road construction site. The tag-based proximity warning system consists of a magnetic field generator and communications system that mounts on the back of a piece of construction equipment such as a dump truck, road grader, or loader. Workers at a construction site wear a small tag that detects the magnetic marker field.

Structural Changes in the Cervical Facet Capsular Ligament: Potential Contributions to Pain Following Subfailure Loading

While studies have demonstrated the cervical facet capsule is at risk for tensile injury during whiplash, the relationship between joint loading, changes in the capsule's structure, and pain is not yet fully characterized. Complementary approaches were employed to investigate the capsule's structure-function relationship in the context of painful joint loading. Isolated C6/C7 facet joints (n=8) underwent tensile mechanical loading, and measures of structural modification were compared for two distraction magnitudes: 300 µm (PV) and 700 µm (SV). In a matched in vivo study, C6/C7 facet joints (n=4) were harvested after the same SV distraction and the tissue was sectioned to analyze collagen fiber organization using polarized light microscopy. Laxity following SV distraction (7.30±3.01%) was significantly greater (p<0.001) than that produced following PV distraction (0.99±0.44%).
