Low-Cost Open-Source Data Acquisition for High-Speed Cylinder Pressure Measurement with Arduino

In-cylinder pressure measurement is an important tool in internal combustion engine research and development for combustion, cycle performance, and knock analysis in spark-ignition engines. In a typical laboratory setup, a sub crank angle resolved (typically between 0.1o and 0.5o) optical encoder is installed on the engine crankshaft, and a piezoelectric pressure transducer is installed in the engine cylinder. The charge signal produced by the transducer due to changes in cylinder pressure during the engine cycle is converted to voltage by a charge amplifier, and this analog voltage is read by a high-speed data acquisition (DAQ) system at each encoder trigger pulse. The high speed of engine operation and the need to collect hundreds of engine cycles for appropriate cycle-averaging requires significant processor speed and memory, making typical data acquisition systems very expensive.

Active Collision Avoidance System for E-Scooters in Pedestrian Environment

In the dense fabric of urban areas, electric scooters have rapidly become a preferred mode of transportation. As they cater to modern mobility demands, they present significant safety challenges, especially when interacting with pedestrians. In general, e-scooters are suggested to be ridden in bike lanes/sidewalks or share the road with cars at the maximum speed of about 15-20 mph, which is more flexible and much faster than pedestrians and bicyclists. Accurate prediction of pedestrian movement, coupled with assistant motion control of scooters, is essential in minimizing collision risks and seamlessly integrating scooters in areas dense with pedestrians. Addressing these safety concerns, our research introduces a novel e-Scooter collision avoidance system (eCAS) with a method for predicting pedestrian trajectories, employing an advanced Long short-term memory (LSTM) network integrated with a state refinement module.

Algorithm to Calibrate Catalytic Converter Simulation Light-Off Curve

Spark ignition engines utilize catalytic converters to reform harmful exhaust gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen into less harmful products. Aftertreatment devices require the use of expensive catalytic metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Meanwhile, tightening automotive emissions regulations globally necessitate the development of high-performance exhaust gas catalysts. So, automotive manufactures must balance maximizing catalyst performance while minimizing production costs. There are thousands of different recipes for catalytic converters, with each having a different effect on the various catalytic chemical reactions which impact the resultant tailpipe gas composition. In the development of catalytic converters, simulation models are often used to reduce the need for physical parts and testing, thus saving significant time and money.

Topological Data Analysis for Navigation in Unstructured Environments

Autonomous vehicle navigation, both global and local, makes use of large amounts of multifactorial data from onboard sensors, prior information, and simulations to safely navigate a chosen terrain. Additionally, as each mission has a unique set of requirements, operational environment and vehicle capabilities, any fixed formulation for the cost associated with these attributes is sub-optimal across different missions. Much work has been done in the literature on finding the optimal cost definition and subsequent mission pathing given sufficient measurements of the preference over the mission factors. However, obtaining these measurements can be an arduous and computationally expensive task. Furthermore, the algorithms that utilize this large amount of multifactorial data themselves are time consuming and expensive.

Minimizing Steady-State Testing Time in an Engine Dynamometer Laboratory

In the automotive industry, performing steady-state tests on an internal combustion engine can be a time consuming and costly process, but it is necessary to ensure the engine meets performance and emissions criteria set by the manufacturer and regulatory agencies. Any measures that can reduce the amount of time required to complete these testing campaigns provides significant benefits to manufacturers. The purpose of this work is then to develop a systematic approach to minimize the time required to conduct a steady-state engine test campaign using a Savitsky-Golay filter to calculate measured signal gradients for continuous steady-state detection. Experiments were conducted on an Armfield CM11-MKII Gasoline Engine test bench equipped with a 1.2L 3-cylinder Volkswagen EA111 R3 engine. The test bench utilizes throttle position control and an eddy current dynamometer braking system with automatic PID control of engine speed.

Suction Cup Quality Predication by Digital Image Correlation

Vacuum suction cups are used as transforming handles in stamping lines, which are essential in developing automation and mechanization. However, the vacuum suction cup will crack due to fatigue or long-term operation or installation angle, which directly affects production productivity and safety. The better design will help increase the cups' service life. If the location of stress concentration can be predicted, this can prevent the occurrence of cracks in advance and effectively increase the service life. However, the traditional strain measurement technology cannot meet the requirements of tracking large-field stains and precise point tracking simultaneously in the same area, especially for stacking or narrow parts of the suction cups. The application must allow multiple measurements of hidden component strain information in different fields of view, which would add cost.

Development of Digital Shearography for Dual Sensitivity Simultaneous Measurement Using Carrier Frequency Spatial Phase Shift Technology

Digital shearography has many advantages, such as full-field, non-contact, high sensitivity, and good robustness. It was widely used to measure the deformation and strain of materials, also to the application of nondestructive testing (NDT). However, most digital sherography applications can only work in one field of view per measurement, and some small defects may not be detected as a result. Multiple measurements of different fields of view are needed to solve this issue, which will increase the measurement time and cost. The difficulty in performing multiple measurements may also increase for cases where the loading is not repeatable. Therefore, a system capable of measuring dual fields of view at the same time is necessary. The carrier frequency spatial phase shift method may be a good candidate to reach this goal because it can simultaneously record phase information of multiple images, e.g. two speckle interferograms with different fields of view.

Large-Angle Full-Field Strain Measurement of Small-Sized Objects Based on the Multi-Camera DIC Test System

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technology is a powerful tool in the field of experimental mechanics to obtain the full-field deformation/strain information of an object. It has been rapidly applied in industry in recent years. However, for the large-angle full-field strain measurement of small-sized cylindrical objects, it’s still a challenge to the DIC accurate measurement due to its small size and curved surface. In this paper, a measurement method based on the multi-camera DIC system is proposed to study the compressive performance of small-sized cylindrical materials. Three cameras form two stereo DIC measurement systems (1 and 2 cameras, and 2 and 3 cameras), each of which measures a part of the object. By calibrating three cameras at the same time, two stereos DIC coordinate systems can be unified to one coordinate system. Then match the two sets of DIC measurement data together to achieve large-angle measurement of the cylindrical surface.

Intelligent Voice Activated Drone(s) for in-Vehicle Services and Real-Time Predictions

Today, commercially available drones have limited use-cases in the rapidly evolving community. However, with advances in drone and software technology, it is possible to utilize these aerial machines to solve problems in a variety of industries such as mining, medical, construction, and law enforcement. For example, in order to reduce time of investigation, Indiana State Police are currently utilizing ad-hoc commercial drones to reconstruct crash scenes for insurance and legal purposes. In this paper, we illustrate how to effectively integrate drones for in-vehicle services and real-time prediction for automotive applications. In order to accomplish this, we first integrate simpler controls such as voice-commands to control the drone from the vehicle. Next, we build smart prediction software that monitors vehicle behavior and reacts in real-time to collisions.

Review and Comparison of Different Multi-Channel Spatial-Phase Shift Algorithms of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is the most sensitive and accurate method for 3D deformation measurement in micro and sub micro-level. ESPI measures deformation by evaluating the phase difference of two recorded speckle interferograms under different loading conditions. By a spatial phase shift technique, ESPI allows for the rapid, accurate and continuous 3D deformation measurement. Multi-channel and carrier frequency are the two main methods of spatial phase shift. Compared with carrier frequency method, which is subject to the problem of spectrum aliasing, multi-channel method is more flexible in use. For extracting the phase value of speckles, four-step algorithm and five-step arbitrary phase algorithm are commonly used. Different algorithms have different spatial resolution, operational requirements, and phase image quality.

Reconciling Simultaneous Evolution of Ground Vehicle Capabilities and Operator Preferences

An objective evaluation of ground vehicle performance is a challenging task. This is further exacerbated by the increasing level of autonomy, dynamically changing the roles and capabilities of these vehicles. In the context of decision making involving these vehicles, as the capabilities of the vehicles improve, there is a concurrent change in the preferences of the decision makers operating the vehicles that must be accounted for. Decision based methods are a natural choice when multiple conflicting attributes are present, however, most of the literature focuses on static preferences. In this paper, we provide a sequential Bayesian framework to accommodate time varying preferences. The utility function is considered a stochastic function with the shape parameters themselves being random variables. In the proposed approach, initially the shape parameters model either uncertain preferences or variation in the preferences because of the presence of multiple decision makers.

Driver Visual Focus of Attention Estimation in Autonomous Vehicles

An existing challenge in current state-of-the-art autonomous vehicles is the process of safely transferring control from autonomous driving mode to manual mode because the driver may be distracted with secondary tasks. Such distractions may impair a driver’s situational awareness of the driving environment which will lead to fatal outcomes during a handover. Current state-of-the-art vehicles notify a user of an imminent handover via auditory, visual, and physical alerts but are unable to improve a driver’s situational awareness before a handover is executed. The overall goal of our research team is to address the challenge of providing a driver with relevant information to regain situational awareness of the driving task. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to estimating a driver’s visual focus of attention using a 2D RGB camera as input to a Multi-Input Convolutional Neural Network with shared weights. The system was validated in a realistic driving scenario.

Tracking Panel Movement during Stamping Process Using Advanced Optical Technology

Metal panels are comprehensively applied in the automotive industry. A significant issue with metal panels is the deflection when moving in the press line of the stamping process. Unpredictable deflection could result in the cut off of the press line. To control the deflection in a safe zone, finite element tools are used to simulate the panel transform process. However, the simulation requires experimental validation where conventional displacement measurement techniques could not satisfy the requirement of vast filed displacement and accuracy point tracking. In this study, multi-camera digital image correlation (DIC) systems have been developed to track the movement of panels during the press line of the stamping process. There are some advantages of applying the DIC system, including non-contact, full-field, high accuracy, and direct measurement techniques that provide the evaluation displacement of the metal panel and press line.

Prediction of Fuel Maps in Variable Valve Timing Spark Ignited Gasoline Engines Using Kriging Metamodels

Creating a fuel map for simulation of an engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) can be computationally demanding. Design of Experiments (DOE) and metamodeling is one way to address this issue. In this paper, we introduce a sequential process to generate an engine fuel map using Kriging metamodels which account for different engine characteristics such as load and fuel consumption at different operating conditions. The generated map predicts engine output parameters such as fuel rate and load. We first create metamodels to accurately predict the Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP), fuel rate, Residual Gas Fraction (RGF) and CA50 (Crank Angle for 50% Heat Release after top dead center). The last two quantities are used to ensure acceptable combustion. The metamodels are created sequentially to ensure acceptable accuracy is achieved with a small number of simulations.

Improvements to a CFR Engine Three Pressure Analysis GT-Power Model for HCCI and SI Conditions

While experimental data measured directly on the engine are very valuable, there is a limitation of what measurements can be made without modifying the engine or the process that is being investigated, such as cylinder temperature. In order to supplement the experimental results, a Three Pressure Analysis (TPA) GT-Power model of the Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine was previously developed and validated for estimating cylinder temperature and residual fraction. However, this model had only been validated for normal and knocking spark ignition (SI) combustion with RON-like intake conditions (naturally aspirated, <52 °C). This work presents improvements made to the GT-Power model and the expansion of its use for HCCI combustion. The burn rate estimation sub-model was modified to allow for low temperature heat release estimation and compression ignition operation.

A Framework for Vision-Based Lane Line Detection in Adverse Weather Conditions Using Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Communication

Lane line detection is a very critical element for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Although, there has been significant amount of research dedicated to the detection and localization of lane lines in the past decade, there is still a gap in the robustness of the implemented systems. A major challenge to the existing lane line detection algorithms stems from coping with bad weather conditions (e.g. rain, snow, fog, haze, etc.). Snow offers an especially challenging environment, where lane marks and road boundaries are completely covered by snow. In these scenarios, on-board sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, and radars are of very limited benefit. In this research, the focus is on solving the problem of improving robustness of lane line detection in adverse weather conditions, especially snow. A framework is proposed that relies on using Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication to access reference images stored in the cloud.

Prediction of Autoignition and Flame Properties for Multicomponent Fuels Using Machine Learning Techniques

Machine learning methods, such as decision trees and deep neural networks, are becoming increasingly important and useful for data analysis in various scientific fields including dynamics and control, signal processing, pattern recognition, fluid mechanics, and chemical synthesis, etc. For future engine design and performance optimization, there is an urgent need for a robust predictive model which could capture the major combustion properties such as autoignition and flame propagation of multicomponent fuels under a wide range of engine operating conditions, without massive experimental measurement or computational efforts. It will be shown that these long-held limitations and challenges related to complex fuel combustion and engine research could be readily solved by implementing machine learning methods.

Modelling of a Discrete Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) System for Fuel Consumption Evaluation - Part 1: Model Development

Given increasingly stringent emission targets, engine efficiency has become of foremost importance. While increasing engine compression ratio can lead to efficiency gains, it also leads to higher in-cylinder pressure and temperatures, thus increasing the risk of knock. One potential solution is the use of a Variable Compression Ratio system, which is capable of exploiting the advantages coming from high compression ratio while limiting its drawbacks by operating at low engine loads with a high compression ratio, and at high loads with a low compression ratio, where knock could pose a significant threat. This paper describes the design of a model for the evaluation of fuel consumption for an engine equipped with a VCR system over representative drive cycles. The model takes as inputs; a switching time for the VCR system, the vehicle characteristics, engine performance maps corresponding to two different compression ratios, and a drive cycle.

Variable Compression Ratio systems are an increasingly attractive solution for car manufacturers in order to reduce vehicle fuel consumption. By having the capability to operate with a range of compression ratios, engine efficiency can be significantly increased by operating with a high compression ratio at low loads, where the engine is normally not knock-limited, and with a low compression ratio at high load, where the engine is more prone to knock. In this way, engine efficiency can be maximized without sacrificing performance. This study aims to analyze how the effectiveness of a VCR system is affected by various powertrain and vehicle parameters. By using a Matlab model of a VCR system developed in Part 1 of this work, the influence of the vehicle characteristics, the drive cycle, and of the number of stages used in the VCR system was studied.

Real Time 2D Pose Estimation for Pedestrian Path Estimation Using GPU Computing

Future fully autonomous and partially autonomous cars equipped with Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) should assure safety for the pedestrian. One of the critical tasks is to determine if the pedestrian is crossing the road in the path of the ego-vehicle, in order to issue the required alerts for the driver or even safety breaking action. In this paper, we investigate the use of 2D pose estimators to determine the direction and speed of the pedestrian crossing the road in front of a vehicle. Pose estimation of body parts, such as right eye, left knee, right foot, etc… is used for determining the pedestrian orientation while tracking these key points between frames is used to determine the pedestrian speed. The pedestrian orientation and speed are the two required elements for the basic path estimation.
