A Comparative Study of Knock Formation in Gasoline and Methanol Combustion Using a Multiple Spark Ignition Approach: An Optical Investigation

Engine knock is a major challenge that limits the achievement of higher engine efficiency by increasing the compression ratio of the engine. To address this issue, using a higher octane number fuel can be a potential solution to reduce or eliminate the propensity for knock and so obtain better engine performance. Methanol, a promising alternative fuel, can be produced from conventional and non-conventional energy resources, which can help reduce pollutant emissions. Methanol has a higher octane number than typically gasolines, which makes it a viable option for reducing knock intensity. This study compared the combustion characteristics of gasoline and methanol fuels in an optical spark-ignition engine using multiple spark plugs. The experiment was carried out on a single-cylinder four-stroke optical engine. The researchers used a customized metal liner with four circumferential spark plugs to generate multiple flame kernels inside the combustion chamber.

Investigation into Various Strategies to Achieve Stable Ammonia Combustion in a Spark-Ignition Engine

Ammonia (NH3) is a carbon-free fuel, which could partially or completely eliminate hydrocarbon (HC) fuel demand. Using ammonia directly as a fuel has some challenges due to its low burning speed and low flammability range, which generates unstable combustion inside the combustion chamber. This study investigated the effect of two different compression ratios (CRs) of 10.5 and 12.5 on the performance of ammonia combustion by using a conventional single spark-ignition (SI) approach. It was found that at a lower CR of 10.5, the combustion was unstable even at advanced spark timing (ST) due to poor combustion characteristics of ammonia. However, increasing the CR to 12.5 improved the engine performance significantly with lower cyclic variations. In addition, this research work also observed the effect of multiple spark ignition strategies on pure ammonia combustion and compared it with the conventional SI approach for the same operating conditions.

Thermal Efficiency Enhancement of a Turbocharged Diesel Engine Dedicated for Hybrid Commercial Vehicle Application

Hybrid powertrain has been proven to be an effective fuel-saving technology in commercial vehicles, but many hybrid commercial vehicles still use conventional diesel engines, resulting in limited fuel savings. The main purpose of this study is to enhance the thermal efficiency of a dedicated hybrid diesel engine focusing on the characteristic operating conditions. Via fundamental thermodynamics process analysis of internal combustion engine, steel piston with high compression ratio, air system involving two-stage turbocharger(2TC) with an intercooler, and late intake valve closing(IVC) timing are proposed to improve the thermal efficiency of the engine. Experimental results show that high compression ratio and lower thermal conductivity of the combustion chamber surface lead to lower heat release rates, requiring optimization of piston profile to accelerate the mixing rate. Besides, high compression ratio also leads to higher mechanical losses.

Simulation Study on Implementation of Oxy-Fuel Combustion for a Practical GDI Engine

As the impacts of global warming have become increasingly severe, Oxy-Fuel Combustion (OFC) has been widely considered as a promising solution to reduce Carbon Dioxide (CO2) for achieving net-zero emissions. In this study, a one-dimensional simulation was carried out to study the implementation of OFC technology on a practical turbocharged 4-cylinder Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine with economical oxygen-fuel ratios and commercial gasoline. When the engine is converted from Conventional Air-fuel Combustion (CAC) mode to OFC mode, and the throttle opening, oxygen mass fraction, stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (lambda = 1) are kept constant, it was demonstrated that compared to CAC mode, θF gets a remarkable extension whereas θC is hardly affected. θF and θC are very sensitive to the ignition timing, and Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) would benefit significantly from applying Maximum Brake Torque (MBT) ignition timing.

Analysis on Emission Characteristics of Urban Buses Based on Remote Online Monitoring

In this study, a new system of assessment method was developed to evaluate the characteristics of urban buses based on remote online monitoring. Four types of buses, including China V emission standards diesel bus, lean-burn CNG bus, air-fuel equivalence ratio combustion CNG bus and gas-electric hybrid bus, were chosen as samples to analyze the emission characteristics of urban buses with different engine types in urban scenario. Based on the traffic conditions in Beijing, the actual emission characteristics of buses under newly-built driving conditions were analyzed. Moreover, the emission factor database of urban buses in Beijing was established to analyze the characteristics of excess emission. The research results are shown as follows. 1) Compared with other types of buses, NOX emission factor and emission rate of lean-burn CNG bus are much higher.

Experimental Study on Knock Mechanism with Multiple Spark Plugs and Multiple Pressure Sensors

Engine knock is an abnormal phenomenon, which places barriers for modern Spark-Ignition (SI) engines to achieve higher thermal efficiency and better performance. In order to trigger more controllable knock events for study while keeping the knock intensity at restricted range, various spark strategies (e.g. spark timing, spark number, spark location) are applied to investigate on their influences on knock combustion characteristics and pressure oscillations. The experiment is implemented on a modified single cylinder Compression-Ignition (CI) engine operated at SI mode with port fuel injection (PFI). A specialized liner with 4 side spark plugs and 4 pressure sensors is used to generate various flame propagation processes, which leads to different auto-ignition onsets and knock development. Based on multiple channels of pressure signals, a band-pass filter is applied to obtain the pressure oscillations with respect to different spark strategies.

Combustion Visualization and Experimental Study on Multi-Point Micro-Flame Ignited (MFI) Hybrid Lean-Burn Combustion in 4-Stroke Gasoline Engines

Lean-burn combustion is an effective method for increasing the thermal efficiency of gasoline engines fueled with stoichiometric fuel-air mixture, but leads to an unacceptable level of high cyclic variability before reaching ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions emitted from conventional gasoline engines. Multi-point micro-flame ignited (MFI) hybrid combustion was proposed to overcome this problem, and can be can be grouped into double-peak type, ramp type and trapezoid type with very low frequency of appearance. This research investigates the micro-flame ignition stages of double-peak type and ramp type MFI combustion captured by high speed photography. The results show that large flame is formed by the fast propagation of multi-point flame occurring in the central zone of the cylinder in the double-peak type. However, the multiple flame sites occur around the cylinder, and then gradually propagate and form a large flame accelerated by the independent small flame in the ramp type.

Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI) combustion can effectively improve the thermal efficiency of conventional spark ignition (SI) gasoline engines, due to shortened combustion processes caused by multi-point auto-ignition. However, its commercial application is limited by the difficulties in controlling ignition timing and violent heat release process at high loads. Stratified flame ignited (SFI) hybrid combustion, a concept in which rich mixture around spark plug is consumed by flame propagation after spark ignition and the unburned lean mixture closing to cylinder wall auto-ignites in the increasing in-cylinder temperature during flame propagation, was proposed to overcome these challenges.

Numerical Investigations on Strong Knocking Combustion under Advanced Compression Ignition Conditions

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combined with high compression ratio is an effective way to improve engines’ thermal efficiency. However, the severe thermodynamic conditions at high load may induce knocking combustion thus damage the engine body. In this study, advanced compression ignition knocking characteristics were parametrically investigated through RCM experiments and simulation analysis. First, the knocking characteristics were optically investigated. The experimental results show that there even exists detonation when the knock occurs thus the combustion chamber is damaged. Considering both safety and costs, the effects of different initial conditions were numerically investigated and the results show that knocking characteristics is more related to initial pressure other than initial temperature. The initial pressure has a great influence on peak pressure and knock intensity while the initial temperature on knock onset.

Large-Scale Simulation of PEM Fuel Cell Using a “3D+1D” Model

Nowadays, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is widely seen as a promising energy conversion device especially for transportation application scenario because of its high efficiency, low operation temperature and nearly-zero road emission. Extensive modeling work have been done based on different dimensions during the past decades, including one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D) and intermediate combinations in between (e.g. “1+1D”). 1D model benefits from a rationally-chosen set of assumptions to obtain excellent calculation efficiency, yet at the cost of accuracy to some extent. In contrast, 3D model has great advantage over 1D model on acquiring more comprehensive information inside the fuel cell. For macro-scale modeling work, one compromise aiming to realize both acceptable computation speed and reasonable reflection of cell operation state is to simplify the membrane electrode assembly (MEA).

First-Principles Research on Adsorption of NOx on Pt Cluster and BaO Cluster Supported by γ-Al2O3 (110) Surface

Lean NOx trap (LNT) is a great potential NOx abatement method for lean-burn gasoline engines in consideration of exhaust aftertreatment cost and installation space. NOx firstly is adsorbed on storage sites during the lean-burn period, then reduced to N2 under catalysis of the catalyst sites in the rich-burn phase. There must be a spillover of NOx species between both types of sites. For a better understanding of this spillover process of NOx species between Pt (as the catalytic center) and BaO sites (as storage components in commercial catalyst), this work focused on the vital first step of spillover, the adsorption of NOx on clean substrate surface (γ-Al2O3 (110) surface) and Ba\Pt cluster supported by the surface. Based on first principles software VASP (Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package), the most stable adsorption structures of NO with Pt3 clusters and (BaO)3 clusters on carrier γ- Al2O3 (110) surface were confirmed and the adsorption energy of these structures were compared.

Effect of Injection Strategy on the Combustion and Knock in a Downsized Gasoline Engine with Large Eddy Simulation

Strategies to suppress knock have been extensively investigated to pursue thermal efficiency limits in downsized engines with a direct-injection spark ignition. Comprehensive considerations were given in this work, including the effects of second injection timing and injector location on knock combustion in a downsized gasoline engine by large eddy simulation. The turbulent flame propagation is determined by an improved G-equation turbulent combustion model, and the detailed chemistry mechanism of a primary reference fuel is employed to observe the detailed reaction process in the end-gas auto-ignition process. The conclusions were obtained by comparing the data to the baseline single-injection case with moderate knock intensity. Results reveal that for both arrangements of injectors, turbulence intensity is improved as the injecting timing is retarded, increasing the flame propagation speed.

Deep Optimization of Catalyst Layer Composition via Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) provides a promising future low carbon automotive powertrain solution. The catalyst layer (CL) is its core component which directly influences the output performance. PEMFC performance can be greatly improved by the effective optimization of CL composition. This work demonstrates a deep optimization of CL composition for improving the PEMFC performance, including the platinum (Pt) loading, Pt percentage of carbon-supported Pt and ionomer to carbon ratio of the anode and the cathode,. The simulation results by a PEMFC three-dimensional (3D) computation fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled with the CL agglomerate model is used to train the artificial neural network (ANN) which can efficiently predict the current density under different CL composition. Squared correlation coefficient (R-square) and mean percentage error in the training set and validation set are 0.9867, 0.2635% and 0.9543, 1.1275%, respectively.

Effects on Cycle-to-Cycle Variations and Knocking Combustion of Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) with a Small Volume Pre-Chamber

Turbulent jet ignition (TJI) has the advantages of improving burning rates and expanding lean burn limitations of gasoline engines. Based on a single cylinder engine, combustion process with different ignition methods, including single spark ignition, twin spark ignition, one-hole TJI and seven-hole TJI, are studied in this work. Experiments are carried out under conditions with different air/fuel equivalence ratios and different engine loads. Results show that the cycle-to-cycle variations of TJI combustion, which is evaluated by coefficient of variations (CoV) of IMEP and CoV of peak pressure, are obviously reduced due to the fast burning rate induced by the jet flame, and one-hole TJI combustion has the best combustion stability, especially for reducing the CoV of peak pressure.

OH, soot and temperature distributions of wall-impinging diesel fuel spray under different wall temperatures

OH, soot and temperature distributions of wall-impinging diesel fuel spray were investigated in a high-temperature high-pressure constant volume combustion vessel. The ambient temperature (Ta) was set as 773 K, and the wall temperature (Tw) was set as 523 K, 673 K, 773 K, respectively. Three different injection pressures (Pi) of 60 MPa, 100 MPa, 160 MPa, and the ambient pressures (Pa) of 4 MPa were applied. The OH spatial distributions of wall-impinging spray were measured by the method of OH chemiluminescence imaging. Two-color pyrometry was applied to evaluate the spatial distributions of KL factor and flame temperature of wall-impinging spray. The results reveal that, OH chemiluminescence is observed in the region near the impingement point firstly. The regions of high OH chemiluminescence intensity and high KL factor appear in the location near the wall surface along the whole combustion process.

Investigation on Knock Resistance with Turbulent Jet Ignition at Different Engine Load in an Optical Engine

This research was focused on the effect of pre-chamber ignition and compared the knock limit of normal spark ignition in the main chamber and pre-chamber jet ignition combustion in a spark ignition gasoline engine. Experiments were conducted in a single-cylinder engine with optical access. Engine was operated with stoichiometric air/fuel mixtures at 1200 rev/min and different inlet pressures of 1, 1.2, and 1.4 bar. No auxiliary fuel was injected into the pre-chamber when jet-ignition mode was used. The results show that significant knock limit extension can be realized with use of a pre-chamber ignition unit. The main differences in engine performance, heat release and combustion, knock resistance and flame propagation were compared between the pre-chamber ignition and conventional spark ignition in the main chamber by in-cylinder pressure measurements and high-speed flame chemiluminescence imaging.

Characteristics of Sub/Supercritical Gasoline and Iso-Octane Jets in High Temperature Environment

Based on the temperature and pressure in the cylinder of GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines under the common operating conditions, jets´ characteristics of gasoline and iso-octane at different fuel temperatures under the high ambient temperature were studied by means of high-speed photography and striation method. It is found that the supercritical gasoline jet shows the morphological collapse of jet center and the protrusion of the front surface, but the iso-octane jet doesn´t. Meanwhile, as the fuel temperature rises, the flash boiling and the interference between adjacent plumes affect the gasoline jet, and cause the center of the jet to form a high-speed and low-pressure zone, hence the air entrainment in this region contributes to the collapse of jets. The collapse and convergence of jets´ morphology are the main reasons for the change of penetration and cone angle.

An Assessment of the Impact of Exhaust Turbine Redesign, for Narrow VGT Operating Range, on the Performance of Diesel Engines with Assisted Turbocharger

Electrically assisted turbochargers are a promising technology for improving boost response of turbocharged engines. These systems include a turbocharger shaft mounted electric motor/generator. In the assist mode, electrical energy is applied to the turbocharger shaft via the motor function, while in the regenerative mode energy can be extracted from the shaft via the generator function, hence these systems are also referred to as regenerative electrically assisted turbochargers (REAT). REAT allows simultaneous improvement of boost response and fuel economy of boosted engines. This is achieved by optimally scheduling the electrical assist and regeneration actions. REAT also allows the exhaust turbine to operate within a narrow range of optimal vane positions relative to the unassisted variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). The ability to operate within a narrow range of VGT vane positions allows an opportunity for a more optimal turbine design for a REAT system.

Experimental Investigation on the Failures of Engine Piston Subjected to Severe Knock

The previous study indicates that the detonation waves generated by acetylene/oxygen mixture can converge in the combustion chamber. In order to verify the destructive effect of detonation wave convergence on piston materials, the detonation bomb device was modified to fundamentally investigate the material failures of aluminum alloy for pistons. The results show that the specimens are destroyed in the middle and edge region after dozens of detonations, which is consistent with the typical characteristics of the piston failures in engines. Therefore, the hypothesis that failures of piston material is caused by the detonation wave convergence is verified.

A Simulation Study on Particle Deposition and Filtration Characteristics in Wall-Flow DPF with Inhomogeneous Wall Structure Using a Two-Dimensional Microcosmic Model

A new two-dimensional wall-flow DPF microstructure model has been developed in this paper to investigate the particle deposition distribution in DPF channels and the deep-bed filtration process of DPF. The substrate wall of the DPF having a thickness of L is divided into several layers with a uniform thickness of Δy along the cross-wall direction, and each layer has specific porosity and pore size. The pressure drop, particle deposition distribution and the dynamic deep-bed filtration process of the DPF with inhomogeneous wall structure are studied under various space velocities. Besides, the differences on DPF’s performance brought by the inhomogeneous wall structure are discussed by comparing with a homogeneous wall structure.
