Stability Monitoring Algorithm with a Combined Slip Tire Model for Maximized Cornering Speed of High-Speed Autonomous Driving

This paper presents a stability monitoring algorithm with a combined slip tire model for maximized cornering speed of high-speed autonomous driving. It is crucial to utilize the maximum tire force with maintaining a grip driving condition in cornering situations. The model-free cruise controller has been designed to track the desired acceleration. The lateral motion has been regulated by the sliding mode controller formulated with the center of percussion. The controllers are suitable for minimizing the behavior errors. However, the high-level algorithm is necessary to check whether the intended motion is inside of the limit boundaries. In extreme diving conditions, the maximum tire force is limited by physical constraints. A combined slip tire model has been applied to monitor vehicle stability. In previous studies, vehicle stability was evaluated only by vehicle acceleration.

Data-driven Trajectory Planning of Lane Change Maneuver for Autonomous Driving

This paper presents a methodology of trajectory planning for the surrounding-aware lane change maneuver of autonomous vehicles based on a data-driven method. The lateral motion is planned by sampling candidate patterns which are defined based on quintic polynomial functions over time. Based on the cost evaluation among the sampled candidates, the optimal lateral motion pattern is selected as a reference and tracked by the controller. The longitudinal motion is planned and controlled using Model Predictive Control (MPC) which is an optimal control method designed considering the surrounding traffic information. To realize the lane change motion similar to the human driving behavior in the surrounding traffic situation, the human driving pattern is modeled in the form of motion parameters and considered in planning the lateral and longitudinal motion.

The Root-Cause Analysis of Engine Stall at Hot Ambient Resulted from Low Pressure Fuel Pump

In case of all gasoline vehicles such as the passenger vehicle, heavy duty truck and light duty truck etc., a fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and transfers the fuel to an engine for stable driving, however, engine stall can be occurred by low pressure fuel pump. The boiling temperature of gasoline fuel is very low, the initial boiling point is around 40°C so fuel can boil easily while driving and end boiling point is around 190°C. It boils sequentially depending on the temperature. It becomes the criteria to determine the amount of vapor released inside the fuel tank at high temperature. The main cause of engine stall at high temperature is rapid fuel boiling by increasing fuel temperature. This causes a lot of vapor. Such vapor flows into the fuel pump which leading to decrease the pump load and the current consumption of the fuel pump continuously. This ultimately results in engine stall.

Optimization of Body Joint Stiffness and Structure

A body joint is one of the most major factors affecting the overall body stiffness in a body system. Thus, in order to optimize the body system, the joint must be also optimized. In order to optimize a body joint, it is necessary to first identify the efficiency of the joint itself. Then, the joint stiffness targets for each joint must be set by analyzing the interaction between joint stiffness and overall body stiffness and the function of the joint in terms of vehicle performance. Finally, an optimal joint structure should be designed with an optimal design methodology. In this study, an optimal methodology for the joint stiffness and design is introduced. Based on this research, an optimized joint design for each joint was applied to the new SUV model resulting in a lightweight body with a required body stiffness.

A Research on Autonomous Vehicle Control in Track Beyond Its Limits of Handling

This paper presents the research related to the self-driving system that has been actively carried out recently. Previous studies have been limited to ensure the path following performance in linear and steady state-alike handling region with small lateral acceleration. However, in the high speed driving, the vehicle cornering response is extended to nonlinear region where tire grips are saturated. This requires a technology to create the driving path for minimum time maneuvering while grasping the tire grip limits of the vehicle in real time. The entire controller consists of three stages-hierarchy: The target motion is determined in the supervisor phase, and the target force to follow the target behavior is calculated in the upper stage controller. Finally, the lower stage controller calculates the actuator phase control input corresponding to the target force.

The Study of the Fundamental Characteristics of Tumble in a Spark-Ignition Engine via Numerical Analysis

A spark-ignition engine commonly induces tumble flow because it generates high turbulence, which is a crucial factor in determining the flame propagation speed. Since tumble affects not only the flame propagation speed but also the various in-cylinder phenomena, it predominantly determines the performance of the engine. In that sense, many studies have been conducted to investigate tumble. Although various studies have revealed the characteristics of tumble numerically and experimentally, there has been no research to identify the physical mechanisms of these characteristics. Although some studies specified the mechanisms from an angular momentum perspective, the theory was insufficient to explain the entire phenomena of tumble. Hence, this study attempts to comprehend the fundamental causes of tumble phenomena such as ‘spinning up’ and ‘vortex breakdown’ from the perspective of kinetic energy.

Speed Limiter Using Disturbance Observer

This paper suggests disturbance observer which improves performance of speed limit assist control. The nonlinear disturbance observer was designed so that disturbance caused by parameter and load uncertainties is able to be estimated exponentially. With the contribution of the observer, feed-forward and integral controllers can be omitted while improving steady-state error elimination and overshoot reduction. The acceleration observer is also designed to reduce the effect of wheel slip and changing slope. The performance of the controllers has been verified not only on flat roads, but also on wave road and rapidly changing ramps.

Model Predictive Control-Based Lateral Control of Autonomous Large-Size Bus on Road with Large Curvature

This paper describes a lateral control of autonomous large size buses on road with large curvature. In the case of long and wide commercial vehicle such as large bus, applying centerline tracking controllers in constrained environments such as large curved road (e.g. turning at intersection) may cause some concerns. Two concerns are considered: inner lane crossing related to collisions with curb and opposite lane crossing related to threatening surrounding vehicles. Considering relations between width and curvature of the road and length and width of the large size bus, the curvature of road at which inner or outer lane crossing begin to occur was calculated when centerline tracking controller was applied. Thus, the proposed algorithm optimizes motion of the bus by using model predictive control (MPC) using road geometry as constraints.

Analysis of the Correlation between Flow and Combustion Characteristics in Spark-Ignited Engine

As global emission standards are becoming more stringent, it is necessary to increase thermal efficiency through the high compression ratio in spark-ignited engines. Various studies are being conducted to mitigate knocking caused by an increased compression ratio, which requires an understanding of the combustion phenomena inside the combustion chamber. In particular, the in-cylinder flow is a major factor affecting the entire combustion process from the generation to the propagation of flames. In the field of spark-ignited engine research, where interest in the concept of lean combustion and the expansion of the EGR supply is increasing, flow analysis is essential to ensure a rapid flame propagation speed and stable combustion process. In this study, the flow around the spark plug was measured by the Laser Doppler Velocimetry system, and the correlation with combustion in spark-ignited engines was analyzed.

An Experimental Investigation of In-Cylinder Flow Motion Effect on Dual-Fuel Premixed Compression Ignition Characteristics

The combustion process using two fuels with different reactivity, known as dual-fuel combustion or RCCI is mainly studied to reduce emissions while maintaining thermal efficiency compared to the conventional diesel combustion. Many studies have proven that dual-fuel combustion has a positive prospect in future combustion to achieve ultra-low engine-out emissions with high indicated thermal efficiency. However, a limitation on high-load expansion due to the higher maximum in-cylinder pressure rise rate (mPRR) is a main problem. Thus, it is important to establish the operating strategy and study the effect of in-cylinder flow motion with dual-fuel combustion to achieve a low mPRR and emissions while maintaining high-efficiency. In this research, the characteristics of gasoline-diesel dual-fuel combustion on different hardware were studied to verify the effect of the in-cylinder flow motion on dual-fuel combustion.

Energy-Optimal Deceleration Planning System for Regenerative Braking of Electrified Vehicles with Connectivity and Automation

This paper presents an energy-optimal deceleration planning system (EDPS) to maximize regenerative energy for electrified vehicles on deceleration events perceived by map and navigation information, machine vision and connected communication. The optimization range for EDPS is restricted within an upcoming deceleration event rather than the entire routes while in real time considering preceding vehicles. A practical force balance relationship based on an electrified powertrain is explicitly utilized for building a cost function of the associated optimal control problem. The optimal inputs are parameterized on each computation node from a set of available deceleration profiles resulting from a deceleration time model which are configured by real-world test drivings.

As CO2 legislation tightens, the next generation of turbocharged gasoline engines must meet stricter emissions targets combined with increased fuel efficiency standards. Recent studies have shown that the following technologies offer significant improvements to the efficiency of turbocharged GDI engines: Miller Cycle via late intake valve closing (LIVC), low pressure loop cooled EGR (LPL EGR), port water injection (PWI), and cylinder deactivation (CDA). While these efficiency-improving technologies are individually well-understood, in this study we directly compare these technologies to each other on the same engine at a range of operating conditions and over a range of compression ratios (CR). The technologies tested are applied to a boosted and direct injected (DI) gasoline engine and evaluated both individually and combined.

While these efficiency improving options are well-understood individually, in this study we directly compare them to each other on the same engine at a range of operating conditions and over a range of compression ratios (CR). For this purpose we undertake a comprehensive simulation of the above technology options using a GT-Power model of the engine with a kinetics based knock combustion sub-model to optimize the fuel efficiency, taking into account the total in-cylinder dilution effects, due to internal and external EGR, on the combustion.

Development of 4-Cylinder 2.0L Gasoline Engine Cooling System Using 3-D CAE

To satisfy the global fuel economy restrictions getting stricter, various advanced cooling concepts, like active flow control strategy, cross-flow and fast warm-up, have been applied to the engine. Recently developed Hyundai’s next generation 4-cylinder 2.0L gasoline engine, also adopts several new cooling subsystems. This paper reviews how 3-D CAE analysis has been extensively used to evaluate cooling performance effectively from concept phase to pre-production phase. In the concept stage, the coolant flow in the water jacket of cylinder head and block was investigated to find out the best one among the proposed concepts and the further improvement of flow was also done by optimizing cylinder head gasket holes. Next, 3-D temperature simulation was conducted to satisfy the development criteria in the prototype stage before making initial test engines.

Estimation of Side Slip Angle Interacting Multiple Bicycle Models Approach for Vehicle Stability Control

This paper presents an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) based side slip angle estimation method to estimate side slip angle under various road conditions for vehicle stability control. Knowledge of the side slip angle is essential enhancing vehicle handling and stability. For the estimation of the side slip angles in previous researches, prior knowledge of tire parameters and road conditions have been employed, and sometimes additional sensors have been needed. These prior knowledge and additional sensors, however, necessitates many efforts and make an application of the estimation algorithm difficult. In this paper, side slip angle has been estimated using on-board vehicle sensors such as yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensors. The proposed estimation algorithm integrates the estimates from multiple Kalman filters based on the multiple models with different parameter set.

In-Gear Slip Control Strategy of Dry-Clutch Systems Using a Sliding Mode Control

This paper proposes a clutch control strategy during in-gear driving situations for Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCTs). The clutch is intentionally controlled to make small amount of a slip to identify the torque transfer capacity. The control objective of this phase is to ensure the clutch slip fairly remaining the specified value. To achieve this, the micro-slip controller is designed based on sliding mode control theory. Experimental verifications performed on onboard control system of the DCT equipped vehicle demonstrate that the proposed controller good tracking performance of the desired slip speed.

Rear-Wheel Steering Control for Enhanced Maneuverability of Vehicles

This paper proposes a rear-wheel steering control method that can modify and improve the vehicle lateral response without tire model and parameter. The proposed control algorithm is a combination of steady-state and transient control. The steady state control input is designed to modify steady-state yaw rate response of the vehicle, i.e. understeer gradient of the vehicle. The transient control input is a feedback control to improve the transient response when the vehicle lateral behavior builds up. The control algorithm has been investigated via computer simulations. Compared to classical control methods, the proposed algorithm shows good vehicle lateral response such as small overshoot and fast response. Specifically, the proposed algorithm can alleviate stair-shaped response of the lateral acceleration.

Predicting the Influences of Intake Port Geometry on the Tumble Generation and Turbulence Characteristics by Zero-Dimensional Spark Ignition Engine Model

The flame propagation characteristic is one of the greatest factor that determines the performance of spark ignition (SI) engines. The in-cylinder flow dynamics is very significant in terms of flame propagation because of its direct influence on the flame shape, turbulent flame speed, and the ignition quality. A number of different techniques are available to optimize the in-cylinder flow and maximize the utilization of turbulence for faster combustion, and tumble enhancement by intake port geometry is one of them. It requires excessive computational expenses to evaluate multiple designs under wide range of operating conditions by 3D-CFD, therefore, a low-dimensional model would be more competitive in such design optimization process. This work suggests a new modification approach for typical 0D turbulence model to take account for the tumble generation during the intake process as well as the turbulence characteristics associated with it.

Research on Stick & Sprag-Slip Phenomenon of Door Waist Belts

The squeak noise generated during the moving of the door glass has a influence on the performance of vehicles felt by the consumer. In order to improve the noise, it is necessary to understand the principle of a friction vibration. In this paper, it is confirmed that the principle on the waist belt is most closely related to stick-slip and sprag-slip among various vibration characteristics. Stick-slip is expressed by energy accumulation and divergence due to difference in static and dynamic friction coefficient. Sprag-slip define instability of geometric structure due to angle of lips on the belt. In this paper, the physical model and the energy equation are established for the above two phenomena. Stick-slip can be solved by decreasing the difference of the static and dynamic friction coefficient. Sprag-slip is caused by the ratio of compressive and shear stiffness of the lips. The belt uses flocking to ensure durability, not coating.

Study on Auto-Ignition Characteristics of High Pressure Methane Jet for Compression Ignition Engine Application

Natural gas has been considered as an alternative fuel for a heavy duty diesel engine with its lower pollutant and carbon dioxide emissions than its counterpart. However, due to the high auto-ignition temperature of methane, this alternate fuel has been mainly used in spark-ignited engine with relatively lower compression ratio, losing full potential of achieving high efficiency. To overcome these limitations, high-pressure direct injection of the natural gas in a compression ignition engine has been proposed, and there have been several attempts to understand physical behaviors and ignition of methane jet. In this study, auto-ignition characteristics of high-pressure methane jet were investigated both through the experiment and the multi-zone modeling to suggest the applicability to such engine.
