Application of Models of Short Circuits and Blow-Outs of Spark Channels under High-Velocity Flow Conditions to Spark Ignition Simulation

This report describes the implementation of the spark channel short circuit and blow-out submodels, which were described in the previous report, into a spark ignition model. The spark channel which is modeled by a particle series is elongated by moving individual spark particles along local gas flows. The equation of the spark channel resistance developed by Kim et al. is modified in order to describe the behavior of the current and the voltage in high flow velocity conditions and implemented into the electrical circuit model of the electrical inductive system of the spark plug. Input parameters of the circuit model are the following: initial discharge energy, inductance, internal resistance and capacitance of the spark plug, and the spark channel length obtained by the spark channel model. The instantaneous discharge current and the voltage are obtained as outputs of the circuit model.

Quantitative Optical Analysis and Modelling of Short Circuits and Blow-Outs of Spark Channels under High-Velocity Flow Conditions

This study models short circuits and blow-outs of spark channels. The short circuit model assumes that a spark channel is short-circuited between two arbitrary locations when the electric potential difference between the two locations exceeds the voltage which enables electrical insulation breakage in-between. The threshold voltage can be raised by increasing the distance between the two locations and decreasing the discharge current. Discharge current, in this model, represents the influence of both the spread and the number of electrically charged particles, i.e., electrons and positive ions, distributed near the two locations. Meanwhile, the blow-out model assumes that a strong flow diffuses electrons and positive ions in the spark channel, and consequently the discharge blows out.

Development of Three-Way Catalysts Enhanced NOx Purifying Activity

Growing concerns about the depletion of raw materials as vehicle ownership continues to increase is prompting automakers to look for ways of decreasing the use of platinum-group metals (PGMs) in the exhaust systems. This research has developed a new catalyst with strong robustness against fluctuations in the exhaust gas and excellent nitrogen oxide (NOx) conversion performance. One of the key technologies is a new OSC material that has low surface area (SA) and high OSC performance. We enhanced the pyrochlore- ceria/zirconia (CZ) which has a very small SA. In order to enhance the heat resistance and promote the OSC reaction, we selected and optimized the additive element. This material showed high OSC performance especially in the temperature range of 400 degrees or less. Another key technology is washcoat structure that has high gas diffusivity by making connected pore in the washcoat (New pore forming technology).

Analysis of Friction Coefficient Variation with Moisture between Friction Surfaces

If a vehicle is left in a humid environment, the coefficient of friction between the brake pads and discs increases, generating a discomforting noise during braking called brake squeal. It is assumed that this increase in the coefficient of friction in a humid environment is the effect of moisture penetrating between the brake friction surfaces. Therefore, this paper analyzes the factors causing coefficient of friction variation with moisture between the friction surfaces by dynamic observation of these surfaces. The observation was achieved by changing the disc materials from cast iron to borosilicate glass. One side of the glass brake disc was pushed onto the brake pad and the sliding surface was observed from the opposite side by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. First, a preliminary test was carried out in a dry state using two pad materials with different wear properties to select the appropriate pad for observing the friction surfaces.

Backward Flow of Hot Burned Gas Surrounding High-Pressure Diesel Spray Flame from Multi-hole Nozzle

The backward flow of the hot burned gas surrounding a diesel flame was found to be one of the factors dominating the set-off length (also called the lift-off length), that is, the distance from a nozzle exit into which a diffusion flame cannot intrude. In the combustion chamber of an actual diesel engine, the entrainment of the surrounding gas into a spray jet from a multi-hole nozzle is restricted by the walls and adjacent spray jets, which induces the backward flow of the surrounding gas. A new momentum theory to calculate the backward flow velocity was established by extending Wakuri's momentum theory. Shadowgraph imaging in an optical engine successfully visualized the backward flow of the hot burned gas.

A Novel Distortion Cancelling Technique Enabling 50-Mbps High Speed Data Transmission for Bus Connected ECUs

With the evolution of automotive features, larger flash program size has been required even at the local electronic control units (ECUs). As the flash programming data rate increases, Ethernet is adopted as a global data port from the external source. However, it can not be applied to the bus type network topology between the domain control unit (DCU) and the local ECUs, because it uses a peer-to-peer type network topology. On the other hand, high speed CAN-FD has been studied recently for this bus topology, but its data rate is limited at the range of several mega bps due to the signal waveform distortion caused by the multiple reflections at the non-terminated stubs. This paper describes a novel distortion cancelling for the bus topology as the pre-emphasis technique, in which the digital signal processing (DSP) compensates the complicated signal distortion caused by the multiple reflections.

Thin-Film Air Flow Sensors for Automotive using the MEMS Technologies

This paper presents two newly developed technologies of optimizing impurity diffusion concentration for silicon semiconductor material and controlling internal stress of the top SiN (Silicon Nitride) layer on a membrane of a silicon substrate to apply them to the manufacturing process of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) type air-flow sensor chips. Until today, in MEMS-type airflow sensors, poly-crystalline silicon (poly-Si) and platinum were widely used as a resistor material of key functional elements on a membrane of air-flow-rate measurement portion. The functional resistors on the membrane are required to monitor high temperatures of about 300 °C and to perform the self-heating operations at that temperature range because of the suppression of contaminant deposition by means of evaporation or incineration.

Countries and regions around the world are tightening emissions regulations in reaction to the increasing awareness of environmental conservation. At the same time, growing concerns about the depletion of raw materials as vehicle ownership continues to increase is prompting automakers to look for ways of decreasing the use of platinum-group metals (PGMs) in the exhaust systems. This research has developed a new catalyst with strong robustness against fluctuations in the exhaust gas and excellent nitrogen oxide (NOx) conversion performance. This catalyst incorporates rhodium (Rh) clusters with a particle size of several nanometers, and stabilized CeO2-ZrO2 solid-solution (CZ) with a pyrochlore crystal structure as a high-volume oxygen storage capacity (OSC) material with a slow O2 storage rate.

Study of Ignition System for Demand Voltage Reduction

Improving the engine efficiency to respond to climate change and energy security issues is strongly required. In order to improve the engine efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and enhance engine performance, OEMs have been developing high compression ratio engines and downsized turbocharged engines. However, higher compression ratio and turbocharging cause cylinder pressure to increase, which in turn increases the demand voltage for ignition. To reduce the demand voltage, a new ignition system is developed that uses a high voltage Zener diode to maintain a constant output voltage. Maintaining a constant voltage higher than the static breakdown voltage helps limit the amount of overshoot produced during the spark event. This allows discharge to occur at a lower demand voltage than with conventional spark ignition systems. The results show that the maximum reduction in demand voltage is 3.5 kV when the engine is operated at 2800 rpm and 2.6 MPa break mean effective pressure.

Consideration of Proper Analysis Method for Car Air-Conditioner's Noise

General analysis methods which are known as Transfer Path Analysis and Air borne Source Quantification have been extended to estimate forces of an air conditioner's parts and also clarify the path from air conditioner system. These results show noise transfer path to be improved. Originally, the existing methods are known to require considerable amount of time for the cause of complicated measurement to get analysis results. In the work of this paper, required measurement is simplified, and time reduction of 50% is achieved without critical decrease in analysis accuracy.

New MEMS Process Technology for Pressure Sensors Integrated with CMOS Circuits

This paper describes the newly developed processes of low temperature wafer bonding using plasma activation and deep dry silicon etching technologies. Both processes are a new type of “MEMS” (Micro Electro Mechanical System) process technology suitable for automotive pressure sensors. The conventional pressure sensor was a unified unit consisting of a silicon sensor chip and a glass stage. The diced unified unit was cut from a bonded disk of a processed silicon wafer and a glass stage substrate, and the silicon sensor chip incorporated four piezo-resistors, a diaphragm and bipolar-circuit. However, the pressure sensor had difficulty in accurately measuring pressure in the high temperature range because of the thermal strain caused by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between the silicon sensor chip and the glass stage.

Temperature Management of Li-Ion Battery Pack for Stop and Start System

The automotive industry is placing high importance on technologies that can reduce CO2, even in a highly fuel-efficient compact car. One major technology is Stop & Start(S&S) System, with a combined energy regeneration system. A key component of the system is a power supply storage device that has high-charge acceptance, light weight, and compact size. We believe a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery completely meets these requirements. For the battery, there are three key points: 1 Battery cell specification 2 State Of Charge (SOC) detection method 3 Temperature management for Li-ion battery. We have already proposed the battery cell and the SOC detection during SAE 2013, and now we are going to introduce “Temperature Management”. If the temperature of a Li-ion battery operates over 60 degrees Celsius, the battery could be severely damaged. Therefore, temperature management of the battery is very important. Conventionally, the temperature is managed by several thermistors and a cooling fan.

This paper evaluates the effect of our new alternator concept for a conventional vehicle, which is able to generate electricity by storing kinetic energy of the vehicle in the high speed flywheel as rotation energy under deceleration. The alternator constructs a planetary gear device and multiple clutch-brakes perform CVT, alternator and high speed flywheel without an expensive electric device, mechanical CVT and vacuum pump. So it has high cost performance.

The aim of this research is to develop the diesel combustion simulation (UniDES: Universal Diesel Engine Simulator) that incorporates multiple-injection strategies and in-cylinder composition changes due to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and that is capable of high speed calculation. The model is based on a zero-dimensional (0D) cycle simulation, and represents a multiple-injection strategy using a multi-zone model and inhomogeneity using a probability density function (PDF) model. Therefore, the 0D cycle simulation also enables both high accuracy and high speed. This research considers application to actual development. To expand the applicability of the simulation, a model that accurately estimates nozzle sac pressure with various injection quantities and common rail pressures, a model that accounts for the effects of adjacent spray interaction, and a model that considers the NOx reduction phenomenon under high load conditions were added.

Lithium-Ion Battery Pack for Stop and Start System

Increased interest in global warming requires rapid improvements in CO2 reduction efforts. The automotive industry is placing high importance on CO2 reduction technologies. Using Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack Stop & Start (S&S) system with combined energy regeneration is an effective technology to reduce CO2 emissions. Power supply storage is very important for the S&S system. High charging acceptance, low weight, and compact size are required. A Li-ion battery is the optimal power supply that meets these requirements. It has high charge acceptance per weight. Furthermore, we developed simple system structure which eliminates the need for the DC-DC converter. By utilizing a Li-ion battery that has voltage characteristics similar to the Pb battery there is no need for a converter to make adjustments between the two power supplies. The Li-ion battery's range of capacity must be managed appropriately as overcharge and overdischarge causes extensive damage to the battery.

ESL (Electric System Level) Design Methodologies enable us to design and verify various electrical behaviors of automotive electronics including automotive semiconductors on a simulator before hardware prototyping. It could facilitate the optimization of hardware structures, and shorten the total development period by reducing rework process. We propose the “ESL Design Methodologies for Automotive” to renovate conventional development scheme. ESL technology began to be used from the domain of digital consumer electronics. Regarding automotive electronics domain, however, we would not be able to adapt the same methodologies to automotive systems, which consist of many mixed-signal components. Also, another approach is required for the rising demand of safety design sort of functional safety.

Evaporator with Integrated Ejector for Automotive Cabin Cooling

The ejector is a fluid pump that recovers expansion energy, which is wasted in the conventional refrigeration cycle decompression process, and converts the recovered expansion energy into pressure energy. In the ejector cycle, the ejector helps to reduce power consumption of the compressor by using the above mentioned pressure-rising effect. Consequently, the ejector system can improve energy efficiency of the refrigeration cycle. In previous work, the ejector cycle was used to reduce power consumption in refrigeration cycles for a cool-box (a beverage cooling inside the vehicle) and refrigerated truck box. Both of these applications used the ejector to achieve refrigerant pressure/temperature below the vehicle cabin temperature. Now, the ejector has been integrated into the vehicle cabin evaporator to reduce power consumption of the refrigeration cycle for vehicle cabin cooling.

Injection Nozzle Coking Mechanism in Common-rail Diesel Engine

The hole diameter of injection nozzles in diesel engines has become smaller and the nozzle coking could potentially cause injection characteristics and emissions to deteriorate. In this research, engine tests with zinc-added fuels, deposit analyses, laboratory tests and numerical calculations were carried out to clarify the deposit formation mechanisms. In the initial phase of deposit formation, lower zinc carboxylate formed close to the nozzle hole outlet by reactions between zinc in the fuel and lower carboxylic acid in the combustion gas. In the subsequent growth phase, the main component changed to zinc carbonate close to nozzle hole inlet by reactions with CO₂ in the combustion gas. Metal components and combustion gases are essential elements in the composition of these deposits. One way of removing these deposits is to utilize cavitations inside the nozzle holes.

Stereo Vision System for Advanced Vehicle Safety System

In this paper, we will introduce a stereo vision system developed as a sensor for a vehicle's front monitor. This system consists of three parts; namely, a stereo camera that collects video images of the forward view of the vehicle, a stereo ECU that processes its output image, and a near-infrared floodlight for illuminating the front at night. We were able to develop an obstacle detection function for the Pre-Crash Safety System and also a traffic lane detection function for a Lane-Keeping Assist System. Especially in regard to the obstacle detection function, we were able to achieve real-time processing of the disparity image calculations that had formerly required long processing times by using two types of recently developed LSIs.
