Mapping an Optimum DC-Link Voltage across the Entire SiC-Based EV Drive Regions Using a Synchronous Boost DC-DC Converter

When designing an electric vehicle (EV) traction system, overcoming the issues arising from the variations in the battery voltage due to the state of charge (SoC) is critical, which otherwise can lead to a deterioration of the powertrain energy efficiency and overall drive performance. However, systems are typically documented under fixed voltage and temperature conditions, potentially lacking comprehensive specifications that account for these variations across the entire range of the vehicle operating regions. To tackle this challenge, this paper seeks to adjust an optimal DC-link voltage across the complete range of drive operating conditions by integrating a DC-DC converter into the powertrain, thereby enhancing powertrain efficiency. This involves conducting a comprehensive analysis of power losses in the power electronics of a connected converter-inverter system considering the temperature variations, along with machine losses, accounting for variable DC-link voltages.

Model Based Algebraic Weight Selection for LQI Control Reducing Dog Clutch Engagement Noise

This paper presents a feedback control strategy to minimize noise during dog clutch engagement in a hybrid transmission. The hybrid transmission contains an internal combustion engine(ICE) and 2 electric motors in P1 and P3 configurations. For efficiency during driving, at high vehicle speeds ICE is connected to wheels, via the dog clutch, hence shifting the vehicle from series to parallel hybrid mode. It is shown by experimental results that if the speed difference between the two sides of the dog clutch is below a certain level the engagement will be without clonk noise. In this paper the designed state feedback Linear Quadratic Integral (LQI) control provides the synchronization torque request to the P1 motor, hence matching the speed of one side of dog clutch with the other under the disturbance from combustion torque of the engine.

The urgent need to combat global warming has spurred legislative efforts within the transport sector to transition away from fossil fuels. Hydrogen is increasingly being utilised as a green energy vector, which can aid the decarbonisation of transport, including internal combustion engines. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used as a tool to study and optimise combustion systems especially in combination with new fuels like hydrogen. Since the behaviour of the injection event significantly impacts combustion and emissions formation especially in direct injection applications, the accurate modelling of H2 injection is imperative for effective design of hydrogen combustion systems. This work aims to evaluate unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) modelling of the advective transport process and related numerical methods.

Effect of Cooling Airflow Intake Positioning on the Aerodynamics of a Simplified Battery Electric Road Vehicle

The transition towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has increased the focus of vehicle manufacturers on energy efficiency. Ensuring adequate airflow through the heat exchanger is necessary to climatize the vehicle, at the cost of an increase in the aerodynamic drag. With lower cooling airflow requirements in BEVs during driving, the front air intakes could be made smaller and thus be placed with greater freedom. This paper explores the effects on exterior aerodynamics caused by securing a constant cooling airflow through intakes at various positions across the front of the vehicle. High-fidelity simulations were performed on a variation of the open-source AeroSUV model that is more representative of a BEV configuration. To focus on the exterior aerodynamic changes, and under the assumption that the cooling requirements would remain the same for a given driving condition, a constant mass flow boundary condition was defined at the cooling airflow inlets and outlets.

Experimental Study of Fuel Mixture Limitations of Ammonia and Gasoline in a Passive Pre-Chamber Engine

Ammonia as a fuel suffers from a high ignition energy requirement making it hard to ignite in stoichiometric mixtures, especially with normal spark plugs. On the other hand, pre-chambers are proven to provide high ignition energy by producing multiple ignition spots in the main chamber. A pre-chamber is usually categorized as “active” if it has a dedicated fueling system, and as “passive” if it depends solely on the air- fuel mixture being introduced from the main chamber and is therefore simpler than the active type. In this study, an SI light-duty engine was tested with a conventional spark plug with fuel mixtures of gasoline and gaseous ammonia (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% NH3). The test was then repeated with a passive pre-chamber under the same operating conditions for comparison. Moreover, the engine exhaust was fitted with a fast response analyzer to measure NOX. The use of the conventional spark plug showed stable combustion throughout the fuel mixture sweep.

A Numerical Investigation of Gas Exchange Modeling and Performance Prediction of a Camless Two-Stroke Hydrogen Engine

Heavy-duty vehicles are primarily powered by diesel fuel, emitting CO2 emissions regardless of the exhaust after-treatment system. Contrastingly, a hydrogen engine has the potential to decarbonize the transportation sector as hydrogen is a carbon free, renewable fuel. In this study, a multi-physics 1D simulation tool (GT-Power) is used to model the gas exchange process and performance prediction of a two-stroke hydrogen engine. The aim is to establish a maximum torque-level for a four-stroke hydrogen engine and then utilize different methods for two-stroke modeling to achieve similar torque by optimizing the gas exchange process. A camless engine is used as base, enabling the flexibility to utilize approximately square valve lift profiles. The preliminary step is the GT-Power model validation, which has been done using diesel and hydrogen engines (single-cylinder heavy-duty) experiments at different operating points (871 rpm, 1200 rpm, 1259 rpm, and 1508 rpm).

Influence of Wheel Drive Unit Belt Width on the Aerodynamics of Passenger Vehicles

Wind tunnels are an essential tool in vehicle development. To simulate the relative velocity between the vehicle and the ground, wind tunnels are typically equipped with moving ground and boundary layer control systems. For passenger vehicles, wind tunnels with five-belt systems are commonly used as a trade-off between accurate replication of the road conditions and uncertainty of the force measurements. To allow different tyre sizes, the wheel drive units (WDUs) can often be fitted with belts of various widths. Using wider belts, the moving ground simulation area increases at the negative cost of larger parasitic lift forces, caused by the connection between the WDUs and the balance. In this work, a crossover SUV was tested with 280 and 360mm wide belts, capturing forces, surface pressures and flow fields. For further insights, numerical simulations were also used.

With ever stricter legislative requirements for CO2 and other exhaust emissions, significant efforts by OEMs have launched a number of different technological strategies to meet these challenges such as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). However, a multiple technology approach is needed to deliver a broad portfolio of products as battery costs and supply constraints are considerable concerns hindering mass uptake of BEVs. Therefore, further investment in Internal Combustion (IC) engine technologies to meet these targets are being considered, such as lean burn gasoline technologies alongside other high efficiency concepts such as dedicated hybrid engines. Hence, it becomes of sound reason to further embrace diversity and develop complementary technologies to assist in the transition to the next generation hybrid powertrain. One such approach is to provide increased valvetrain flexibility to afford new degrees of freedom in engine operating strategies.

Methodology Development for Investigation and Optimization of Engine Starts in a HEV Powertrain

The shift toward electrification and limitations in battery electric vehicle technology have led to high demand for hybrid vehicles (HEVs) that utilize a battery and an internal combustion engine (ICE) for propulsion. Although HEVs enable lower fuel consumption and emissions compared to conventional vehicles, they still require combustion of fuels for ICE operation. Thus, emissions from hybrid vehicles are still a major concern. Engine starts are a major source of emissions during any driving event, especially before the three-way catalyst (TWC) reaches its light-off temperature. Since the engine is subjected to multiple starts during most driving events, it is important to mitigate and better understand the impact of these emissions. In this study, experiments were conducted to analyze engine starts in a hybrid powertrain on different experimental setup.

Evaluation of Electrically Heated Catalyst Control Strategies against a Variation of Cold Engine Start Driver Behaviour

An electrically heated catalyst (EHC) in the three-way catalyst (TWC) aftertreatment system of a gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) provides cold engine start exhaust pollutant emission reduction potential. The EHC can be started before switching on the ICE, thereby offering the possibility to pre-heat (PRH) the TWC, in the absence of exhaust flow. The EHC can also provide post engine start heat (PSH) when the heat is accompanied by exhaust mass flow over the TWC. A mixed heating strategy (MXH) comprises both PRH and PSH. All three strategies are evaluated under a range of engine start variations using an ICE-exhaust aftertreatment (EATS) simulation framework. It is driven by an engine speed-torque requested trace, with an engine-out emissions model focused on cold-start, engine heating and catalyst heating engine measures and a physics- based EATS with EHC model.

Optical Diagnostics of Isobaric and Conventional Diesel Combustion in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

Compared to conventional diesel combustion (CDC), isobaric combustion can achieve higher thermal efficiency while lowering heat transfer losses and nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, isobaric combustion suffers from higher soot emissions. While the aforementioned trends are well established, there is limited literature about the high-temperature reaction zones, the liquid-phase penetration distance, and the flame tip propagation velocity of isobaric combustion. In the present study, the line-of-sight integrated imaging of Mie-scattering, combustion luminosity, and CH* chemiluminescence were conducted in an optically accessible single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine. The engine was equipped with a flat-bowl-shaped optical piston to allow bottom-view imaging of the combustion chamber. The experiments were conducted using n-heptane fuel for CDC and isobaric combustion modes.

Two Dimensional Measurements of Soot Size and Concentration in Diesel Flames by Laser Based Optical Methods

Soot particle size, particle concentration and volume fraction were measured by laser based methods in optically dense, highly turbulent combusting diesel sprays under engine-like conditions. Experiments were done in the Chalmers High Pressure, High Temperature spray rig under isobaric conditions and combusting commercial diesel fuel. Laser Induced Incandescence (LII), Elastic Scattering and Light Extinction were combined quasi-simultaneously to quantify particle characteristics spatially resolved in the middle plane of a combusting spray at two instants after the start of combustion. The influence that fuel injection pressure, gas temperature and gas pressure exert on particle size, particle concentration and volume fraction were studied. Probability density functions of particle size and two-dimensional images of particle diameter, particle concentration and volume fraction concerning instantaneous single-shot cases and average measurements are presented.

Development of a Reduced TPRF-E (Heptane/Isooctane/Toluene/Ethanol) Gasoline Surrogate Model for Computational Fluid Dynamic Applications in Engine Combustion and Sprays

Investigating combustion characteristics of oxygenated gasoline and gasoline blended ethanol is a subject of recent interest. The non-linearity in the interaction of fuel components in the oxygenated gasoline can be studied by developing chemical kinetics of relevant surrogate of fewer components. This work proposes a new reduced four-component (isooctane, heptane, toluene, and ethanol) oxygenated gasoline surrogate mechanism consisting of 67 species and 325 reactions, applicable for dynamic CFD applications in engine combustion and sprays. The model introduces the addition of eight C1-C3 species into the previous model (Li et al; 2019) followed by extensive tuning of reaction rate constants of C7 - C8 chemistry. The current mechanism delivers excellent prediction capabilities in comprehensive combustion applications with an improved performance in lean conditions.

Particulates in a GDI Engine and Their Relation to Wall-Film and Mixing Quality

This paper investigates how particulates number PN is influenced by fuel wall-film, liner wetting, and the mixing quality for different start of injection timings (SOI). Both experimental data with PN measurements, endoscope images from a high-speed camera from a single-cylinder engine, and CFD simulations were used for the analysis. Engine geometry was a spray-guided system with 300 bar fuel pressure and with single injections. Data was captured for 2000 rpm / 9 bar IMEPn. The results show that fuel film on the piston was only found to significantly increase PN for over-advanced SOI (in our engine geometry, earlier than -310 CAD). This results in luminescence from diffusion burn on the piston surface, which strongly contributes to PN. For an SOI timing of -310 CAD, fuel film on piston reaches a maximum of 3% of the injected fuel, vaporizes, and no remaining fuel film is found at the time of ignition. Approximately 0.5-1% of the fuel ends up on the liner.

A Numerical Study on the Effect of a Pre-Chamber Initiated Turbulent Jet on Main Chamber Combustion

To elucidate the complex characteristics of pre-chamber combustion engines, the interaction of the hot gas jets initiated by an active narrow throated pre-chamber with lean premixed CH4/air in a heavy-duty engine was studied computationally. A twelve-hole KAUST proprietary pre-chamber geometry was investigated using CONVERGE software. The KAUST pre-chamber has an upper conical part with the spark plug, and fuel injector, followed by a straight narrow region called the throat and nozzles connecting the chambers. The simulations were run for an entire cycle, starting at the previous cycle's exhaust valve opening (EVO). The SAGE combustion model was used with the chemistry modeled using a reduced methane oxidation mechanism based on GRI Mech 3.0, which was validated against in-house OH chemiluminescence data from the optical engine experiments.

Visualization of Pre-Chamber Combustion and Main Chamber Jets with a Narrow Throat Pre-Chamber

Pre-chamber combustion (PCC) has re-emerged in recent last years as a potential solution to help to decarbonize the transport sector with its improved engine efficiency as well as providing lower emissions. Research into the combustion process inside the pre-chamber is still a challenge due to the high pressure and temperatures, the geometrical restrictions, and the short combustion durations. Some fundamental studies in constant volume combustion chambers (CVCC) at low and medium working pressures have shown the complexity of the process and the influence of high pressures on the turbulence levels. In this study, the pre-chamber combustion process was investigated by combustion visualization in an optically-accessible pre-chamber under engine relevant conditions and linked with the jet emergence inside the main chamber. The pre-chamber geometry has a narrow-throat. The total nozzle area is distributed in two six-hole rows of nozzle holes.

Using Multiple Ignition Sites and Pressure Sensing Devices to Determine the Effect of Air-Fuel Equivalence Ratio on the Morphology of Knocking Combustion

In spark-ignition combustion, knocking combustion inherently presents an interaction between the main flame front and end gas autoignition. Conventionally, it generates a high amplitude pressure wave traveling across the chamber that can be responsible for reducing the performance of the engine, and can cause heavy damage to engine components. In order to study the phenomenon in a controllable way, experiments were performed on a specialized single-cylinder research engine fitted with a liner equipped with four equi-spaced spark plugs in the side so as to propagate various flame topologies from those locations, and hence achieve more controlled knock events. In addition, six pressure transducers were employed at distinct locations to precisely record details of the autoignition event by monitoring the pressure oscillations, and with them the combustion characteristics and knock intensity.

Computational Investigation of the Effects of Injection Strategy and Rail Pressure on Isobaric Combustion in an Optical Compression Ignition Engine

The high-pressure isobaric combustion has been proposed as the most suitable combustion mode for the double compre4ssion expansion engine (DCEE) concept. Previous experimental and simulation studies have demonstrated an improved efficiency compared to the conventional diesel combustion (CDC) engine. In the current study, isobaric combustion was achieved using a single injector with multiple injections. Since this concept involves complex phenomena such as spray to spray interactions, the computational models were extensively validated against the optical engine experiment data, to ensure high-fidelity simulations. The considered optical diagnostic techniques are Mie-scattering, fuel tracer planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), and natural flame luminosity imaging. Overall, a good agreement between the numerical and experimental results was obtained.

Effect of Injection Strategy and EGR on Particle Emissions from a CI Engine Fueled with an Oxygenated Fuel Blend and HVO

Alcohol-based fuels are a viable alternative to fossil fuels for powering vehicles. As a drop-in fuel, an oxygenated fuel blend containing the C8 alcohol 2-ethylhexanol (isomer of octanol), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and rapeseed methyl ester (RME) can reduce soot and NOx emissions whilst maintaining engine performance. However, fuel injection strategy significantly affects combustion and hence has been investigated with a view to reducing emissions whilst maintaining engine efficiency. In a single cylinder light-duty compression ignition research engine, the effect of different injection strategies (main, main/post, double pre/main, double pre/main/post injection) and EGR levels (0%, 19%) on specifically NOx, soot emissions and particle size distribution was investigated for three different fuels: fossil diesel fuel, HVO and the oxygenated blend. The blend was designed to have diesel-like combustion properties (cetane number of 52) and had an oxygen content of 5.4% by mass.

Three-Way Catalytic Reaction in an Electric Field for Exhaust Emission Control Application

To prevent global warming, further reductions in carbon dioxide are required. It is therefore important to promote the spread of electric vehicles powered by internal combustion engines and electric vehicles without internal combustion engines. As a result, emissions from hybrid electric vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines should be further reduced. Interest in catalytic reactions in an electric field with a higher catalytic activity compared to conventional catalysts has increased because this technology consumes less energy than other electrical heating devices. This study was therefore undertaken to apply a catalytic reaction in an electric field to an exhaust emission control. First, the original experimental equipment was built with a high voltage system used to conduct catalytic activity tests.
