Analyzing the Expense: Cost Modeling for State-of-the-Art Electric Vehicle Battery Packs

The Battery Performance and Cost Model (BatPaC), developed by Argonne National Laboratory, is a versatile tool designed for lithium-ion battery (LIB) pack engineering. It accommodates user-defined specifications, generating detailed bill-of-materials calculations and insights into cell dimensions and pack characteristics. Pre-loaded with default data sets, BatPaC aids in estimating production costs for battery packs produced at scale (5 to 50 GWh annually). Acknowledging inherent uncertainties in parameters, the tool remains accessible and valuable for designers and engineers. BatPaC plays a crucial role in National Highway Transportation Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulatory assessments, providing estimated battery pack manufacturing costs and weight metrics for electric vehicles. Integrated with Argonne's Autonomie simulations, BatPaC streamlines large-scale processes, replacing traditional models with lookup tables.

Expanding the Use of Vehicle Specific Power in Analysis of Platoon Performance

Platooning is a coordinated driving strategy by which following trucks are placed into the wake of leading vehicles. Doing this leads to two primary benefits. First, the vehicles following are shielded from aerodynamic drag by a “pulling” effect. Secondly, by placing vehicles behind the leading truck, the leading vehicles experience a “pushing” effect. The reduction in aerodynamic drag leads to reduced fuel usage and, consequently, reduced greenhouse gas emissions. To maximize these effects, the inter-vehicle distance, or headway, needs to be minimized. In current platooning strategy iterations, Coordinated Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is used to maintain close following distances. Many of these strategies utilize the fuel rate signal as a controller cost function parameter. By using fuel rate, current control strategies have limited applicability to non-conventional powertrains.

Energy Savings Impact of Eco-Driving Control Based on Powertrain Characteristics in Connected and Automated Vehicles: On-Track Demonstrations

This research investigates the energy savings achieved through eco-driving controls in connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), with a specific focus on the influence of powertrain characteristics. Eco-driving strategies have emerged as a promising approach to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in CAVs. However, uncertainty remains about how the optimal strategy developed for a specific CAV applies to CAVs with different powertrain technologies, particularly concerning energy aspects. To address this gap, on-track demonstrations were conducted using a Chrysler Pacifica CAV equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE), advanced sensors, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems, compared with another CAV, a previously studied Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV) equipped with an electric motor and battery.

Thermal Characterization of Lithium-Ion Batteries under Varying Operating Conditions

Despite the widespread adoption of lithium-ion batteries in various applications such as energy storage, concerns related to thermal management have been persisting, primarily due to the heat generated during their operation and the associated adverse effects on its efficiency, safety, and lifetime. Hence, the thermal characterization of lithium-ion batteries is essential for optimizing the layout of the battery cells for a pack design and the corresponding thermal management system. This study focuses on an experimental investigation of heat generation of Li-ion batteries under different operating conditions, including charge-discharge rates, ambient temperatures, states of charge, and compressive pressure. The experiments were conducted using a custom-designed multifunctional calorimeter, enabling precise measurement of the heat generation rate of the battery and the entropy coefficient. The measured results have shown a good match with the calculated heat generation rate.

HIL Demonstration of Energy Management Strategy for Real World Extreme Fast Charging Stations with Local Battery Energy Storage Systems

Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) infrastructure is crucial for an increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. However, an unmanaged implementation may lead to negative grid impacts and huge power costs. This paper presents an optimal energy management strategy to utilize grid-connected Energy Storage Systems (ESS) integrated with XFC stations to mitigate these grid impacts and peak demand charges. To achieve this goal, an algorithm that controls the charge and discharge of ESS based on an optimal power threshold is developed. The optimal power threshold is determined to carry out maximum peak shaving for given battery size and SOC constraints.

Platooning vehicles present novel pathways to saving fuel during transportation. With the rise of autonomous solutions, platooning becomes an increasingly apparent sector requiring the application of this new technology. Platooning vehicles travel together intending to reduce aerodynamic resistance during operation. Drafting allows following vehicles to increase fuel economy and save money on refueling, whether that be at the pump or at a charging station. However, autonomous solutions are still in infancy, and controller evaluation is an exciting challenge proposed to researchers. This work brings forth a new application of an emissions quantification metric called vehicle-specific power (VSP). Rather than utilize its emissions investigative benefits, the present work applies VSP to heterogeneous Class 8 Heavy-Duty truck platoons as a means of evaluating the efficacy of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC).

Comparing the Performance of Different Heavy Duty Platooning Control Strategies

Platooning is a promising technology which can mitigate greenhouse gas impacts and reduce transportation energy consumption. Platooning is a coordinated driving strategy where trucks align themselves in order to realize aerodynamic benefits to reduce required motive force. The aerodynamic benefit is seen as either a “pull” effect experienced by the following vehicles or a “push” effect experienced by the leader. The energy savings magnitude increases nonlinearly as headway (following distance) is reduced [1]. In efforts to maximize energy savings, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) is utilized to maintain relatively short headways. However, when platooning is attempted in the real world, small transient accelerations caused by imperfect control result in observed energy savings being less than expected values. This study analyzes the performance of a recently developed nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) platooning strategy over challenging terrain.

Quantifying the Energy Impact of Autonomous Platooning-Imposed Longitudinal Dynamics

Platooning has produced significant energy savings for vehicles in a controlled environment. However, the impact of real-world disturbances, such as grade and interactions with passenger vehicles, has not been sufficiently characterized. Follower vehicles in a platoon operate with both different aerodynamic drag and different velocity traces than while driving alone. While aerodynamic drag reduction usually dominates the change in energy consumption for platooning vehicles, the dynamics imposed on the follow vehicle by the lead vehicle and exogenous disturbances impacting the platoon can negate aerodynamic energy savings. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to link the change in longitudinal platooning dynamics with the energy consumption of a platoon follower in real time. This is accomplished by subtracting a predicted acceleration from measured longitudinal acceleration.

Adaptive Actuator Delay Compensation for a Vehicle Lateral Control System

Steering actuator lag is detrimental to the performance of lateral control systems and often leads to oscillation, reduced stability margins, and in some cases, instability. If the actuator lag is significant, compensation is required to maintain stability and meet performance specifications. Many recent works use a high-level approach to compensate for delay by utilizing model-based methods such as model predictive control (MPC). While these methods are effective when accurate models of both the vehicle and the actuator are available, they are susceptible to model errors. This work presents a low-level, adaptive control architecture to compensate for unknown or varying steering delay and dynamics. Using an inner-loop controller to regulate steer angle commands, oscillation can be reduced, and stability margins can be maintained without the need for an accurate vehicle model.

On-Track Demonstration of Automated Eco-Driving Control for an Electric Vehicle

This paper presents the energy savings of an automated driving control applied to an electric vehicle based on the on-track testing results. The control is a universal speed planner that analytically solves the eco-driving optimal control problem, within a receding horizon framework and coupled with trajectory tracking lower-level controls. The automated eco-driving control can take advantage of signal phase and timing (SPaT) provided by approaching traffic lights via vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. At each time step, the controller calculates the accelerator and brake pedal position (APP/BPP) based on the current state of the vehicle and the current and future information about the surrounding environment (e.g., speed limits, traffic light phase).

Experimentally Establishing Ideal Platooning Performance as a Metric for Real-World Platooning Assessment

Platooning heavy-duty trucks decreases aerodynamic drag for following trucks, reducing energy consumption, and increasing both range and mileage. Previous platooning experimentation has demonstrated fuel economy benefits in two-, three-, and four-truck configurations. However, exogenous variables disturb the ability of these platoons to maintain the desired formation, causing an accordion effect within the platoon and reducing energy benefits via acceleration/deceleration events. This phenomenon is increasingly exacerbated as platoon size and road grade variations increase. The current work assesses how platoon size, road curvature, and road grade influence platoon energy efficiency. Fuel consumption rate is experimentally quantified for four heterogeneous Class 8 vehicles operating in standalone (baseline), two-, and four-truck platooning configurations to assess fuel consumption changes while driving through diverse road conditions.

Vehicle-In-The-Loop Workflow for the Evaluation of Energy-Efficient Automated Driving Controls in Real Vehicles

This paper introduces a new systematic workflow for the rapid evaluation of energy-efficient automated driving controls in real vehicles in controlled laboratory conditions. This vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) workflow, largely standardized and automated, is reusable and customizable, saves time and minimizes costly dynamometer time. In the first case study run with the VIL workflow, an automated car driven by an energy-efficient driving control previously developed at Argonne used up to 22 % less energy than a conventional control. In a VIL experiment, the real vehicle, positioned on a chassis dynamometer, has a digital twin that drives in a virtual world that replicates real-life situations, such as approaching a traffic signal or following other vehicles.

Design of a Rule-Based Controller and Parameter Optimization Using a Genetic Algorithm for a Dual-Motor Heavy-Duty Battery Electric Vehicle

This paper describes a configuration and controller, designed using Autonomie,1 for dual-motor battery electric vehicle (BEV) heavy-duty trucks. Based on the literature and current market research, this model was designed with two electric motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle. A rule-based control algorithm was designed for the new dual-motor BEV, based on the model, and the control parameters were optimized by using a genetic algorithm (GA). The model was simulated in diverse driving cycles and gradeability tests. The results show both a good following of the desired cycle and achievement of truck gradeability performance requirements. The simulation results were compared with those of a single-motor BEV and showed reduced energy consumption with the high-efficiency operation of the two motors.

Medium- and Heavy-Duty Value of Technology Improvement

Improvements in vehicle technology impact the purchase price of a vehicle and its operating cost. In this study, the monetary benefit of a technology improvement includes the potential reduction in vehicle price from using cheaper or smaller components, as well as the discounted value of the fuel cost savings. As technology progresses over time, the value and benefit of improving technology varies as well. In this study, the value of improving a few selected technologies (battery energy density, electric drive efficiency, tire rolling resistance, aerodynamics, light weighting) is studied and the value of the associated cost saving is quantified. The change in saving as a function of time, powertrain selection and vehicle type is also quantified. For example, a 10% reduction in aerodynamic losses is worth $24,222 today but only $8,810 in 2030 in an electric long haul truck. The decrease in value is primarily due to expected battery cost reduction over time.

New Metrics for Quantifying the Energy Efficiency of Platoons in the Presence of Disturbances

Due to aerodynamic drag reduction, vehicles may have significant energy savings while platooning in close succession. However, when circumstances force active deceleration to maintain the platoon, such as during vehicle cut-ins or grade changes, the aerodynamic efficiency benefits may be undermined by losses in kinetic energy. In this work, a theoretical relationship is derived to correlate the amount of active deceleration a vehicle experiences with energy efficiency. The derived relationship is leveraged to analyze platooning data from the last vehicle in a class 8 vehicle platoon. The data include both two- and four-truck platoons operating under nine different truck-to-truck gap control strategies. Using J1939 CAN data and GPS-estimated grade profiles, off-throttle data were isolated and longitudinal acceleration is estimated as a function of grade using Kalman filtering.

A Cloud-Based Simulation and Testing Framework for Large-Scale EV Charging Energy Management and Charging Control

The emerging need of building an efficient Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure requires the investigation of all aspects of Vehicle-Grid Integration (VGI), including the impact of EV charging on the grid, optimal EV charging control at scale, and communication interoperability. This paper presents a cloud-based simulation and testing platform for the development and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of VGI technologies. Although the HIL testing of a single charging station has been widely performed, the HIL testing of spatially distributed EV charging stations and communication interoperability is limited. To fill this gap, the presented platform is developed that consists of multiple subsystems: a real-time power system simulator (OPAL-RT), ISO 15118 EV Charge Scheduler System (EVCSS), and a Smart Energy Plaza (SEP) with various types of charging stations, solar panels, and energy storage systems.

Correlation between Sensor Performance, Autonomy Performance and Fuel-Efficiency in Semi-Truck Platoons

Semi-trucks, specifically class-8 trucks, have recently become a platform of interest for autonomy systems. Platooning involves multiple trucks following each other in close proximity, with only the lead truck being manually driven and the rest being controlled autonomously. This approach to semi-truck autonomy is easily integrated on existing platforms, reduces delivery times, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions via fuel economy benefits. Level 1 SAE fuel studies were performed on class-8 trucks operating with the Auburn Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system, and fuel savings up to 10-12% were seen. Enabling platooning autonomy required the use of radar, global positioning systems (GPS), and wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. Poor measurements and state estimates can lead to incorrect or missing positioning data, which can lead to unnecessary dynamics and finally wasted fuel.

Numerical Evaluation of Spark Assisted Cold Idle Operation in a Heavy-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) has been shown to offer benefits in the NOx-soot tradeoff over conventional diesel combustion while still achieving high fuel efficiency. However, due to gasoline’s low reactivity, it is challenging for GCI to attain robust ignition and stable combustion under cold operating conditions. Building on previous work to evaluate glow plug-assisted GCI combustion at cold idle, this work evaluates the use of a spark plug to assist combustion. The closed-cycle 3-D CFD model was validated against GCI test results at a compression ratio of 17.3 during extended cold idle operation under laboratory-controlled conditions. A market representative, ethanol-free, gasoline (RON92, E0) was used in both the experiment and the numerical analysis. Spark-assisted simulations were performed by incorporating an ignition model with the spark energy required for stable combustion at cold start.

Connected and automated technologies poised to change the way vehicles operate are starting to enter the mainstream market. Methods to accurately evaluate these technologies, in particular for their impact on safety and energy, are complex due to the influence of static and environmental factors, such as road environment and traffic scenarios. Therefore, it is important to develop modeling and testing frameworks that can support the development of complex vehicle functionalities in a realistic environment. Microscopic traffic simulations have been increasingly used to assess the performance of connected and automated vehicle technologies in traffic networks. In this paper, we propose and apply an evaluation method based on a combination of microscopic traffic simulation (AIMSUN) and a chassis dynamometer-based vehicle-in-the-loop environment, developed at Argonne National Laboratory.

Opportunities for Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy Improvements through Hybridization

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fuel saving potential of various hybrid powertrain architectures for medium and heavy duty vehicles. The relative benefit of each powertrain was analyzed, and the observed fuel savings was explained in terms of operational efficiency gains, regenerative braking benefits from powertrain electrification and differences in vehicle curb weight. Vehicles designed for various purposes, namely urban delivery, utility, transit, refuse, drayage, regional and long haul were included in this work. Fuel consumption was measured in regulatory cycles and various real world representative cycles. A diesel-powered conventional powertrain variant was first developed for each case, based on vehicle technical specifications for each type of truck. Autonomie, a simulation tool developed by Argonne National Laboratory, was used for carrying out the vehicle modeling, sizing and fuel economy evaluation.
