Modelling and Analysis of a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) Algorithm for Fuel Economy

Connectivity in ground vehicles allows vehicles to share crucial vehicle data, such as vehicle acceleration and speed, with each other. Using sensors such as radars and lidars, on the other hand, the intravehicular distance between a leader vehicle and a host vehicle can be detected. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) builds upon ground vehicle connectivity and sensor information to form convoys with automated car following. CACC can also be used to improve fuel economy and mobility performance of vehicles in the said convoy. In this paper, a CACC system is presented, where the acceleration of the lead vehicle is used in the calculation of desired vehicle speed. In addition to the smooth car following abilities, the proposed CACC also has the capability to calculate a speed profile for the ego vehicle that is fuel efficient, making it an Ecological CACC (Eco-CACC) model.

Virtual Chip Test and Washer Simulation for Machining Chip Cleanliness Management Using Particle-Based CFD

Metal cutting/machining is a widely used manufacturing process for producing high-precision parts at a low cost and with high throughput. In the automotive industry, engine components such as cylinder heads or engine blocks are all manufactured using such processes. Despite its cost benefits, manufacturers often face the problem of machining chips and cutting oil residue remaining on the finished surface or falling into the internal cavities after machining operations, and these wastes can be very difficult to clean. While part cleaning/washing equipment suppliers often claim that their washers have superior performance, determining the washing efficiency is challenging without means to visualize the water flow. In this paper, a virtual engineering methodology using particle-based CFD is developed to address the issue of metal chip cleanliness resulting from engine component machining operations. This methodology comprises two simulation methods.

Verification of Driver Status Monitoring Camera Position Using Virtual Knowledge-Based Engineering

A DMS (Driver Monitoring System) is one of the most important safety features that assist in the monitoring functions and alert drivers when distraction or drowsiness is detected. The system is based in a DSMC (Driver Status Monitoring Camera) mounted in the vehicle's dash, which has a predefined set of operational requirements that must be fulfilled to guarantee the correct operation of the system. These conditions represent a trade space analysis challenge for each vehicle since both the DSMC and the underlying vehicle’s requirements must be satisfied. Relying upon the camera’s manufacturer evaluation for every iteration of the vehicle’s design has proven to be time-consuming, resources-intensive, and ineffective from the decision-making standpoint.

Development of a Detailed 3D Finite Element Model for a Lithium-Ion Battery Subject to Abuse Loading

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been used as the main power source for Electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years. The mechanical behavior of LIBs subject to crush loading is crucial in assessing and improving the impact safety of battery systems and EVs. In this work, a detailed 3D finite element model for a commercial vehicle battery was built, in order to better understand battery failure behavior under various loading conditions. The model included the major components of a prismatic battery jellyroll, i.e., cathodes, anodes, and separators. The models for these components were validated against the corresponding material coupon tests (e.g., tension and compression). Then the components were integrated into the cell level model for simulation of jellyroll loading and damage behavior under three types of compressive indenter loading: (1) Flat-end punch, (2) Hemispherical punch and (3) Round-edge wedge. The comparisons showed reasonable agreement between modeling and experiments.

An Optimization Model for Die Sets Allocation to Minimize Supply Chain Cost

In this paper, a novel mixed-integer programming model is developed to optimally assign the die sets to candidate plants to minimize the total costs. The total costs include freight shipping stamped parts to assembly plants, die set movement, outsourcing, and utilization. Therefore, the objective function is weighted multi-criteria and it takes into consideration some of the key constraints in the real-world condition including “must-move die sets”. An optimization tool has been developed that takes several inputs and feeds them as the input to the mathematical model and generates the optimal assignments with the directional costs as the output. The tool has been tested for several plants at Ford and has proved its robustness by saving millions of dollars. The developed tool can easily be applied to other manufacturing systems and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Design of an Additive Manufactured Natural Gas Engine with Thermally Conditioned Active Prechamber

In order to decarbonize and lower the overall emissions of the transport sector, immediate and cost-effective powertrain solutions are needed. Natural gas offers the advantage of a direct reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to its better Carbon to Hydrogen ratio (C/H) compared to common fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline or diesel. Moreover, an optimized engine design suiting the advantages of natural gas in knock resistance and lean mixtures keeping in mind the challenges of power density, efficiency and cold start manoeuvres. In the public funded project MethMag (Methane lean combustion engine) a gasoline fired three-cylinder-engine is redesigned based on this change of requirements and benchmarked against the previous gasoline engine.

Uncertainty Quantification of Wet Clutch Actuator Behaviors in P2 Hybrid Engine Start Process

Advanced features in automotive systems often necessitate the management of complex interactions between subsystems. Existing control strategies are designed for certain levels of robustness, however their performance can unexpectedly deteriorate in the presence of significant uncertainties, resulting in undesirable system behaviors. This limitation is further amplified in systems with complex nonlinear dynamics. Hydro-mechanical clutch actuators are among those systems whose behaviors are highly sensitive to variations in subsystem characteristics and operating environments. In a P2 hybrid propulsion system, a wet clutch is utilized for cranking the engine during an EV-HEV mode switching event. It is critical that the hydro-mechanical clutch actuator is stroked as quickly and as consistently as possible despite the existence of uncertainties. Thus, the quantification of uncertainties on clutch actuator behaviors is important for enabling smooth EV-HEV transitions.

Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) with Traffic Preview

By utilizing the vehicle to infrastructure communication, the conventional Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) applications give speed advisory range for drivers to travel to pass at the green light. However, these systems do not consider the traffic between the ego vehicle and the traffic light location, resulting in inaccurate speed advisories. Therefore, the driver needs to intuitively adjust the vehicle's speed to pass at the green light and avoid traffic in these scenarios. Furthermore, inaccurate speed advisories may result in unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, resulting in poor fuel efficiency and comfort. To address these shortcomings of conventional GLOSA, in this study, we proposed the utilization of collaborative perception messages shared by smart infrastructures to create an enhanced speed advisory for the connected vehicle drivers and automated vehicles.

Numerical Modelling of Coolant Filling and De-aeration in a Battery Electric Vehicle Cooling System

Trapped air bubbles inside coolant systems have adverse effect on the cooling performance. Hence, it is imperative to ensure an effective filling and de-aeration of the coolant system in order to have less air left before the operation of the coolant system. In the present work, a coolant/air multiphase VOF method was utilized using the commercial CFD software SimericsMP+® to study the coolant filling and subsequent de-aeration process in a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) cooling system. First, validations of the numerical simulations against experiments were performed for a simplified coolant recirculation system. This system uses a tequila bottle for de-aeration and the validations were performed for different coolant flow rates to examine the de-aeration efficiency. A similar trend of de-aeration was captured between simulation and experimental measurement.

Model in the loop for training purpose

The automotive industry is passing for a big transformation, due to technologies advance. The electrical technologies are also on a good rising curve, calling the attention of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs). This scenario generates the demand for a faster method to train their new hired engineers, when compared with usual on the job training. Model in the Loop (MiL) consists in one of the real-time embedded systems test phases, which is developed in a computational environment, performing a mathematical modeling of the system, presenting an interface that allows the visualization of its dynamics and the signals involved. Two powerful software in industry that apply MiL are the Matlab and Simulink. A project involving these applications was proposed for a team of new hired engineers, developing models of several vehicle Electronic Control Units (ECUs), with some scope reduction as an example the functional requirements reduction.

Development of a PN Surrogate Model Based on Mixture Quality in a GDI Engine

A novel surrogate model is presented, which predicts the engine-out Particle Number (PN) emissions of a light-duty, spray-guided, turbo-charged, GDI engine. The model is developed through extensive CFD analysis, carried out using the Siemens Simcenter STAR-CD, and considers a range of part-load operating conditions and single-variable sweeps where control parameters such as start of injection and injection pressure are varied in isolation. The work is attached to the Ford-led APC6 DYNAMO project, which aims to improve efficiency and reduce harmful emissions from the next generation of gasoline engines. The CFD work focused on the air exchange, fuel spray and mixture preparation stages of the engine cycle. A combined Rosin-Rammler and Reitz-Diwakar model, calibrated over a wide range of injection pressure, is used to model fuel atomization and secondary droplets break-up.

Circumferential Variation of Noise at the Blade-Pass Frequency in a Turbocharger Compressor with Ported Shroud

The ported shroud casing treatment for turbocharger compressors offers a wider operating flow range, elevated boost pressures at low compressor mass flow rates, and reduced broadband whoosh noise in spark-ignition internal combustion engine applications. However, the casing treatment elevates tonal noise at the blade-pass frequency (BPF). Typical rotational speeds of compressors employed in practice push BPF noise to high frequencies, which then promote multi-dimensional acoustic wave propagation within the compressor ducting. As a result, in-duct acoustic measurements become sensitive to the angular location of pressure transducers on the duct wall. The present work utilizes a steady-flow turbocharger gas stand featuring a unique rotating compressor inlet duct to quantify the variation of noise measured around the duct at different angular positions.

Exponential Trajectory Tracking Passivity-Based Control for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors

In this paper, a novel methodology of nonlinear control is used, and a passivity-based control of contractive port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) systems is applied to a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This methodology, also called “tIDA-PBC” (Trajectory Injection and Damping Assignment—Passivity-Based Control), uses passivity-based control of PCH systems “IDA-PBC” and exploits the properties of contractive Hamiltonian systems, resulting in a closed loop with its contractive system desired dynamics, thus obtaining an exponential trajectory tracking without relying on the error coordinates. In this system, a few steps are proposed in order to divide and modularize the methodology so it can be redesigned or reapplied in other systems by the reader. First, we define the model and set the way to solve the “matching equation.” Then the feasible and reference trajectories are obtained.

Application of Data Analytics to Decouple Historical Real-World Trip Trajectories into Representative Maneuvers for Driving Characterization

Historical driver behavior and drive style are crucial inputs in addition to V2X connectivity data to predict future events as well as fuel consumption of the vehicle on a trip. A trip is a combination of different maneuvers a driver executes to navigate a route and interact with his/her environment including traffic, geography, topography, and weather. This study leverages big data analytics on real-world customer driving data to develop analytical modeling methodologies and algorithms to extract maneuver-based driving characteristics and generate a corresponding maneuver distribution. The distributions are further segmented by additional categories such as customer group and type of vehicle. These maneuver distributions are used to build an aggressivity distribution database which will serve as the parameter basis for further analysis with traffic simulation models.

Machine Learning Based Parameter Calibration for Multi-Scale Material Modeling of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) AlSi10Mg

Rapid development of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) technology enables almost unconstrained design freedom for metallic parts and components in automotive industry. However, the mechanical properties of L-PBF alloys, AlSi10Mg for example, have shown significant differences when compared with their counterparts via conventional manufacturing process, due to the unique microstructure induced by extremely high heating and cooling rate. Therefore, microstructure informed material modeling approach is critical to fully unveil the process-structure-property correlation for such materials and enable the consideration of the effect of manufacturing during part design. Multi-scale material modeling approach, in which crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) models were employed at the microscale, has been previously developed for L-PBF AlSi10Mg.

Assessing the Access to Jobs by Shared Autonomous Vehicles in Marysville, Ohio: Modeling, Simulating and Validating

Autonomous vehicles are expected to change our lives with significant applications like on-demand, shared autonomous taxi operations. Considering that most vehicles in a fleet are parked and hence idle resources when they are not used, shared on-demand services can utilize them much more efficiently. While ride hailing of autonomous vehicles is still very costly due to the initial investment, a shared autonomous vehicle fleet can lower its long-term cost such that it becomes economically feasible. This requires the Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAV) in the fleet to be in operation as much as possible. Motivated by these applications, this paper presents a simulation environment to model and simulate shared autonomous vehicles in a geo-fenced urban setting.

Quantitative Analysis of Gasoline Direct Injection Engine Emissions for the First 5 Firing Cycles of Cold Start

A series of cold start experiments using a 2.0 liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine with custom controls and calibration were carried out using gasoline and iso-pentane fuels, to obtain the cold start emissions profiles for the first 5 firing cycles at an ambient temperature of 22°C. The exhaust gases, both emitted during the cold start firing and emitted during the cranking process right after the firing, were captured, and unburned hydrocarbon emissions (HC), CO, and CO2 on a cycle-by-cycle basis during an engine cold start were analyzed and quantified. The HCs emitted during gasoline-fueled cold starts was found to reduce significantly as the engine cycle increased, while CO and CO2 emissions were found to stay consistent for each cycle. Crankcase ventilation into the intake manifold through the positive-crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve system was found to have little effect on the emissions results.

This paper presents a decoupled solution for mapping and validating complex and dynamic user interfaces (UI). Creating unique and satisfying user experiences are becoming the focus of products whereas digital user interfaces are a big part of this delivery. This tendency is coming to complex real-time systems, thus, growing the need of a proper validation of digital UIs considering its intrinsic requirements and limitations. The previous framework that ran the touchscreen tests required changes in case of UI updates while the matrix-like structure proposed gives a correlation between all to all clickable objects thus mapping all possible pathways to the many different screens.

Hardware-in-the-Loop and Road Testing of RLVW and GLOSA Connected Vehicle Applications

This paper presents an evaluation of two different Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) applications, namely Red Light Violation Warning (RLVW) and Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA). The evaluation method is to first develop and use Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulator testing, followed by extension of the HIL testing to road testing using an experimental connected vehicle. The HIL simulator used in the testing is a state-of-the-art simulator that consists of the same hardware like the road side unit and traffic cabinet as is used in real intersections and allows testing of numerous different traffic and intersection geometry and timing scenarios realistically. First, the RLVW V2I algorithm is tested in the HIL simulator and then implemented in an On-Board-Unit (OBU) in our experimental vehicle and tested at real world intersections.

Characterization and Modeling of Wet Clutch Actuator for High-Fidelity Propulsion System Simulations

Innovations in mobility are built upon a management of complex interactions between sub-systems and components. A need for CAE tools that are capable of system simulations is well recognized, as evidenced by a growing number of commercial packages. However impressive they are, the predictability of such simulations still rests on the representation of the base components. Among them, a wet clutch actuator continues to play a critical role in the next generation propulsion systems. It converts hydraulic pressure to mechanical force to control torque transmitted through a clutch pack. The actuator is typically modeled as a hydraulic piston opposed by a mechanical spring. Because the piston slides over a seal, some models have a framework to account for seal friction. However, there are few contributions to the literature that describe the effects of seals on clutch actuator behaviors.
