Experimental Study on Diesel Spray Combustion and Wall Heat Transfer with Multiple Fuel Injection Strategies - Results of Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine Experiment

The rapid compression expansion machine (RCEM) was used to investigate the temporal variations of the spray flame and wall heat flux in the diesel engine combustion process by using 120 MPa and 180 MPa common rail pressure. A stepped cavity was applied to investigate spray and flame behavior under the pilot, pre and main multiple injection strategy. Wall heat flux sensors were installed in the piston cavity and the cylinder side. The injector has 3 holes with the neighboring angle in the left direction and another 3 holes in the right direction to simulate the spray interaction in the 10-hole injector combustion system in the actual diesel engine. The spray and flame behavior were taken by a high-speed video camera with direct photograph. A two-color analysis was applied to investigate gas temperature and KL factor distribution. The effect of locations and common rail pressure on heat transfer was investigated.

Combustion Performance of Methane Fermentation Gas with Hydrogen Addition under Various Ignition Timings

Hydrogen (H2) addition is widely used for natural gas combustion to improve the engine efficiency. However, less attention was paid on the various ignition timings for the maximum brake torque (MBT) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE). In order to check the ignition timing effect, experiments were performed in a spark ignition engine with engine speed fixed on 1500 revolutions per minute (rpm). Firstly, CH4 was only used for combustion with excess air ratio (λ) changing from 0.8 to 1.4. Then, co-combustion of 50 vol% CH4 and 50 vol% CO2 was checked to simulate methane fermentation gas. Finally, H2 was added with volume percentage varying from 5% to 20%. Among these discussions, torque, brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), BTE and cylinder pressure were evaluated. Based on the results, high efficiency can be achieved by advancing the ignition timing with H2 addition at λ=1.4. However, with H2 addition, the ignition timing should be retarded to obtain higher BTE.

Behaviors of Spray Droplets with and without Flat Wall Impingement

Fuel spray impingement on the combustion chamber wall cannot be avoid in direct injection gasoline engines, resulting in insufficient combustion and unburned hydrocarbon/soot emissions from the engines. And the microscopic characteristics of the impinging spray have a close relation with the fuel film formation, which has a direct effect on the engine performance and emissions. Therefore, figuring out the droplet behaviors of the impinging spray is significantly important for improving the engine performance and reducing emissions. However, the microscopic characteristics of the impinging spray have not been deeply understood and the differences between the impinging and free spray are seldom mentioned in previous study. Therefore, particle image analysis (PIA) technique was applied to detect the microscopic characteristics at the capture location in order to track the droplet behaviors of the spray tip during the propagation process.

Numerical Study on Characteristics of Spray under Air Flow in Gasoline Engine

The air flow affects the spray feature and mixture significantly in gasoline engine. The effects of air flow with atmosphere and pressurized ambient pressure were investigated experimentally in the previous work, the gasoline spray characteristics and air flow are analyzed using CFD method in this study. By polishing the model of droplet breakup according to the experimental results, the simulations are taken with various air flow conditions. Modeling of spray injected under typical condition of crossflow is employed to compare the numerical results with experimental results, using the corrected model the more calculation are carried out simulating the real conditions. With changing the injection and air flow conditions, the spray feature, droplet size, droplet movement, and droplet distribution are calculated by a commercial software.

Vaporization and Turbulence Characteristics of High Pressure Gasoline Sprays Impinging on a Wall

To get a better understanding of the characteristics of the high pressure gasoline sprays impinging on a wall, a fundamental study was conducted in a high-temperature high-pressure constant volume vessel under the simulated engine conditions of in-cylinder pressures, temperatures, and wall temperatures. The injection pressure was varied from 20 to 120 MPa. The spray tip penetration, vapor mass distribution, and vaporization rate were quantitatively measured with the laser absorption-scattering (LAS) technique. The velocity fields of the wall-impinging sprays under vaporizing conditions were measured with the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique using silicone oil droplets as tracers. The effects of injection pressure and spray/wall interactions on spray characteristics were investigated. The results showed that the increased injection pressure improved penetration, vaporization, and turbulence of the sprays.

Characteristics of Flat-Wall Impinging Spray Flame and Its Heat Transfer under Diesel Engine-Like Condition: Effects of Injection Pressure, Nozzle Hole Diameter and Impingement Distance

Substantial amount of fuel energy input is lost by heat transfer through combustion chamber walls in the internal combustion engines. Thus, these heat losses account for reduced thermal efficiency, in that spray-wall impingement plays a crucial role in Direct Injection diesel engines. The objective of this study is to investigate the mechanism of the heat transfer from the spray/flame to the impinging wall under small diesel engine-like condition and how the spray characteristics are affected with regards to effect of injection pressure, nozzle hole diameter and impingement distance. The experiment results showed that injection pressure was predominant factor on spray-wall heat transfer.

Internal Fuel Flow, Near-Field and Far-Field Spray Evolution, and Mixture Formation Characteristics of Diesel Injectors - A Comparison between Multi- and Single-Hole Injectors

A comparison of spray characteristics was conducted between single- and multi-hole injectors. A commercial software (AVL FIRE) was used to investigate the internal flow inside the sac volume, as well as the initial spray behavior at 1 mm downstream of the nozzle exit. Microscopic imaging was applied to observe the spray dispersion angle (spray cone angle) at the vicinity of the nozzle. Laser absorption scattering (LAS) technique was implemented for measuring the mixture concentration. Three injection quantities, namely 0.5, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/hole, were selected to observe the differences between transient and quasi-steady spray. The vapor penetration at the initial stage of the injection was greater for single-hole than that of multi-hole injector due to faster fuel pressure build-up process inside the sac volume.

Characterization of Internal Flow and Spray Behaviors of Hole-Type Nozzle under Tiny and Normal Injection Quantity Conditions for Diesel Engine

The tiny and normal injection quantity instances usually happen under the multi-injection strategy condition to restrain the uncontrollability of the ignition timing of the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion concept. Meanwhile, instead of the traditional and fundamental single-hole diesel injector, the axisymmetric multi-hole injectors are usually applied to couple with the combustion chamber under most practical operating conditions. In the current paper, the internal flow and spray characteristics generated by single-hole and multi-hole (10 holes) nozzles under normal (2 mm3/hole) and tiny (0.3 mm3/hole) injection quantity conditions were investigated in conjunction with a series of experimental and computational methods. High-speed video observation was conducted at 10000 and 100000 fps under the condition of 120 MPa rail pressure, 1.5 MPa ambient pressure, room temperature, and nitrogen environment to visualize different spray properties.

Numerical Studies of Spray Combustion Processes of Palm Oil Biodiesel and Diesel Fuels using Reduced Chemical Kinetic Mechanisms

Spray combustion processes of palm oil biodiesel (PO) and conventional diesel fuels were simulated using the CONVERGE CFD code. Thermochemical and reaction kinetic data (115 species and 460 reactions) by Luo et al. (2012) and Lu et al. (2009) (68 species and 283 reactions) were implemented in the CONVERGE CFD to simulate the spray and combustion processes of the two fuels. Tetradecane (C14H30) and n- heptane (C7H16) were used as surrogates for diesel. For the palm biodiesel, the mixture of methyl decanoate (C11H20O2), methyl-9-decenoate (C11H19O2) and n-heptane was used as surrogate. The palm biodiesel surrogates were combined in proportions based on the previous GC-MS results for the five major biodiesel components namely methyl palmitate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate.

Mixture Formation and Combustion Processes of Multi-Hole Nozzle with Micro Orifices for D.I. Diesel Engines

In order to investigate effects of the multi-hole nozzle with micro orifices on mixture formation processes in Direct-Injection Diesel engines, mixture characteristics were examined via an ultraviolet-visible laser absorption scattering (LAS) technique under various injectors. The injection quantity per orifice per cycle was reduced by nozzle hole sizes. The LAS technique can provide the quantitative and simultaneous measurements of liquid and vapor phases concentration distributions inside of the fuel spray. Mass of ambient gas entrained into the spray, liquid/ vapor mass and mean equivalence ratio of total fuel were obtained based on Lambert Beer's law. As a result, the leaner and more homogeneous fuel-gas mixture can be achieved by reducing the nozzle hole diameter, in the meanwhile more ambient gas were entrained into the spray. Breakup Process of an Initial Spray Injected by a D.I. Gasoline Injector-Simultaneous Measurement of Droplet Size and Velocity by Laser Sheet Image Processing and Particle Tracking Technique

The breakup and atomization processes of the pre-swirl spray, which is produced before the hollow-cone spray from a high-pressure swirl-type D.I. gasoline injector, were investigated under different ambient pressure conditions. The injector has a press-fitted swirl tip, in which six tangential slots giving the injecting fuel an angular momentum are perforated at an equal space interval. A microscopic imaging technique was applied to get the spatially high-resolution LIF tomograms of the pre-swirl spray. The sprays were illuminated by an Nd:YAG laser light sheet and imaged using a high resolution CCD camera, fixed with a micro lens and coupled with an optical low-pass filter. The droplet size and the individual droplet's velocity were obtained by applying the image processing and the particle tracking techniques, respectively.

Vapor/Liquid Behaviors in Split-Injection D.I. Diesel Sprays in a 2-D Model Combustion Chamber

Some experimental investigations have shown that the trade-off curve of NOx vs. particulate of a D.I. diesel engine with split-injection strategies can be shifted closer to the origin than those with a single-pulse injection, thus reducing both particulate and NOx emissions significantly. It is clear that the injection mass ratios and the dwell(s) between injection pulses have significant effects on the combustion and emissions formation processes in the D.I. diesel engine. However, how and why these parameters significantly affect the engine performances remains unexplained. The effects of both injection mass ratios and dwell between injections on vapor/liquid distributions in the split-injection diesel sprays impinging on a flat wall have been examined in our previous work.

An Analysis of Ambient Air Entrainment into Split Injection D.I. Gasoline Spray by LIF-PIV Technique

Effects of split injection, with a relatively short time interval between the two sprays, on the spray development process, and the air entrainment into the spray, were investigated by using laser induced fluorescence and particle image velocimetry (LIF-PIV) techniques. The velocities of the spray and the ambient air were measured. The cumulative mass of the ambient air entrained into the spray was calculated by using the entrainment velocity normal to the spray boundary. The vortex structure of the spray, formed around the leading edge of the spray, showed a true rotating flow motion at low ambient pressures of 0.1 MPa, whereas at 0.4 MPa, it was not a true rotating flow, but a phenomenon of the small droplets separating from the leading edge of the spray and falling behind, due to air resistance. The development processes of the 2nd spray were considerably different from that of the 1st spray because the 2nd spray was injected into the flow fields formed by the 1st spray.

Characterization of Mixture Formation in Split-Injection Diesel Sprays via Laser Absorption-Scattering (LAS) Technique

Experimental results of a diesel engine have shown that using split-injection can reduce the NOx and particulate emissions. For understanding the mechanism of emissions reduction, mixture formation in split-injection diesel sprays was characterized in the present paper. A dual-wavelength laser absorption-scattering (LAS) technique was developed by use of the second harmonic (532nm) and the fourth harmonic (266nm) of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser as the incident light and dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) as the test fuel. By applying this technique, imaging was made of DMN sprays injected into a high-temperature and high-pressure constant volume vessel by a single-hole nozzle incorporated in a common rail injection system for D.I. diesel engine. The line-of-sight optical thickness of both fuel vapor and droplets in the sprays was yielded from the sprays images.

Numerical and Experimental Analyses of the Injection Characteristics of Dimethyl Ether with a D. I. Diesel Injection System

The fuel injection characteristics of Dimethyl Ether(DME) were calculated and compared with the calculated results of diesel fuel using a simulation model of an in-line diesel injection system in order to clarify the differences between the injection characteristics of the two fuels. Moreover, numerical analyses for the DME injection were performed while changing the fuel parameters and the injection system parameters in order to estimate the effects of these parameters on the fuel injection characteristics. The effects of some of these parameters were evaluated by experimental results conducted in a constant volume vessel. Furthermore, the spray tip penetration was calculated using the computed results of the injection pressure. As a result of this study, the injection characteristics of the DME fuel are basically confirmed. By the macroscopic analyses of these spray characteristics, the DME spray behavior in a combustion chamber can be estimated.

Flame Propagation Characteristics in a Heterogeneous Concentration Distribution of a Fuel-Air Mixture

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the flame propagation characteristics in the presence of a heterogeneous concentration distribution of a fuel-air mixture in order to provide fundamental knowledge of the effects of gaseous mixture concentration heterogeneity on the combustion process. Different propane-air mixture distributions were produced by the reciprocating movements of a pair of perforated plates in a constant volume combustion chamber. The mean equivalence ratio of the fuel-air mixture was varied from 0.7 on the lean side to 1.6 on the rich side, the turbulence intensity in the combustion chamber was also varied at levels of 0.185 m/s, 0.130 m/s, 0.100 m/s, and 0.0 m/s. By an independent control of the mixture distribution and the turbulence intensity in the combustion chamber, the flame structure and flame propagation speed at various heterogeneous levels of the mixture distribution were investigated in detail.

Characterization of Flows in the Sac Chamber and the Discharge Hole of a D.I. Diesel Injection Nozzle by Using a Transparent Model Nozzle

The internal flow of a diesel injection nozzle was studied by using transparent model nozzles to clarify the effects of the flows in the sac chamber and the discharge hole on the spray behaviors. The geometry of the model nozzle was scaled up 10 times the actual nozzle and the injection pressure for the model nozzle was adjusted so as to achieve a Reynolds number at the discharge hole which was the same as an actual nozzle. Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) tracers were used to visualize the flow patterns in the sac chamber. Sequential photographs of the internal flow and the issuing spray plume during the opening process of the needle valve were taken by a high-speed video camera. By locating the discharge hole on the upper side of the sac chamber, the turbulence intensity in the sac chamber increases and the spread angle of the spray plume becomes large.

Effects of Mixture Heterogeneity on Flame Propagation in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber

Although mixture formation is considered important in actual spark ignition engines, A full understanding of the combustion characteristics of a heterogeneous mixture has not yet been achieved. In this study, in order to clarify the effects of a heterogeneous concentration distribution of the fuel-air mixture on the flame propagation process, different degrees of heterogeneously distributed mixtures were created by the motion of a pair of perforated plates in a constant volume combustion chamber. The laser Rayleigh scattering method was applied for quantitative visualizations of these mixture distributions. To control the distribution of the mixture concentration and the turbulence intensity independently, the flow in the chamber and its turbulence intensity were also measured by a laser sheet method and the LDV technique.

Experiments and Modeling on Spray Distributions in the Combustion Chamber of a Direct Injection Diesel Engine

Distributions of non-evaporating diesel sprays impinging on a simulated combustion chamber wall were observed from various directions while changing some of the experimental parameters, such as nozzle projection and top-clearance. High-speed photography was used in this study to examine the effects of these parameters on the spray distributions. Moreover, the spray distributions were predicted by using a spray model based on a multi-package model. The calculated distributions were displayed three-dimensionally using a volume rendering application developed by the authors. The predicted spray distributions were compared with the experimental results observed from various directions in order to evaluate the spray model.
