Technical Study for the Development of Air Brake Compressor in Electric Commercial Vehicles

Abstract The development of electric commercial vehicles brought up novel challenges in the design of efficient and reliable air brake systems. The compressor is one of the critical components of the air brake system and is responsible for supplying pressurized air to the brake system. In this study, we aimed to gather essential information regarding the pressure and flow rate requirements for the compressor in the air brake system of electric commercial vehicles. We extensively analyzed the existing air brake systems utilized in conventional commercial vehicles. We examined the performance characteristics of reciprocating compressors traditionally employed in these systems. Recognizing the need for novel compressor designs tailored to electric commercial vehicles, we focused on identifying the specifics such as efficiency, performance characteristics, reliability, and cost of the compressor.

Fuel Efficiency Analysis and Control of a Series Electric Hybrid Compact Wheel Loader

Abstract The escalating demand for more efficient and sustainable working machines has pushed manufacturers toward adopting electric hybrid technology. Electric powertrains promise significant fuel savings, which are highly dependent on the nature of the duty cycle of the machine. In this study, experimental data measured from a wheel loader in a short-loading Y-cycle is used to exercise a developed mathematical model of a series electric hybrid wheel loader. The efficiency and energy consumption of the studied architecture are analyzed and compared to the consumption of the measured conventional machine that uses a diesel engine and a hydrostatic transmission. The results show at least 30% reduction in fuel consumption by using the proposed series electric hybrid powertrain, the diesel engine rotational speed is steady, and the transient loads are mitigated by the electric powertrain.

Control System for Regenerative Braking Efficiency in Electric Vehicles with Electro-Actuated Brakes

Abstract This article presents the design and the analysis of a control logic capable of optimizing vehicle’s energy consumption during a braking maneuver. The idea arose with the purpose of enhancing regeneration and health management in electric vehicles with electro-actuated brakes. Regenerative braking improves energy efficiency and allows a considerable reduction in secondary emissions, but its efficiency is strongly dependent on the state of charge (SoC) of the battery. In the analyzed case, a vehicle equipped with four in-wheel motors (one for each wheel), four electro-actuated brakes, and a battery was considered. The proposed control system can manage and optimize electrical and energy exchanges between the driveline’s components according to the working conditions, monitoring parameters such as SoC of the battery, brake temperature, battery temperature, motor temperature, and acts to optimize the total energy consumption.

Enhancing Regenerative Energy Capture in Electric Vehicle: Braking Performance through Integral Sliding Mode Control

Abstract This article focuses on the development of an active braking control system tailored for electric vehicles. The essence of this system lies in its ability to regulate the slip coefficient to optimize traction during braking, thereby maximizing energy recuperation. In the context of the simulation on enhancing regenerative energy capture in electric vehicles, the use of integral sliding mode control (ISMC) as an alternative for regulating braking performance can be understood through a comparison of two key output variables in braking control systems: wheel deceleration and wheel slip. Traditionally, wheel deceleration has been a controlled variable in braking systems, and it is still utilized in some anti-lock braking systems (ABS). It can be easily measured using a basic wheel encoder. However, the dynamic performance of wheel deceleration control may suffer when there are rapid changes in the road surface.

Safety Concepts for Future Electromechanical Brake Actuators

Abstract A growing interest in electromechanical brakes (EMB) is discernible in the automotive industry finding its climax in an announcement of EMB series production in late 2022 [1]. The introduction of EMB allows for new design opportunities using distributed software on smart actuators. However, additional efforts are needed to ensure continuously high levels of safety even when established design principles in the brake system are changed. This article discusses different safety concepts that could potentially be put in place in EMB actuators. Therefore, safety goals that need to be satisfied by an actuator are derived. Furthermore, three different degrees of complexity are differentiated, evolving to different required electronic control units (ECU) and architectures. Additionally, also the safety of the actuation unit (AU) is considered to realize a holistic safety concept for the actuator. Finally, a conclusion is drawn comparing the different investigated concepts.

Forensic Analysis of Lithium-Ion Cells Involved in Fires

Abstract The emerging use of rechargeable batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles and distributed energy systems, and accidental fires involving batteries, has heightened the need for a methodology to determine the root cause of the fire. When a fire involving batteries takes place, investigators and engineers need to ascertain the role of batteries in that fire. Just as with fire in general, investigators need a framework for determining the role that is systematic, reliant on collection and careful analysis of forensic evidence, and based on the scientific method of inquiry. This article presents a systematic scientific process to analyze batteries that have been involved in a fire. It involves examining Li-ion cells of varying construction, using a systematic process that includes visual inspection, x-ray, CT scan, and possibly elemental analysis and testing of exemplars.

Vehicle Braking Performance Improvement via Electronic Brake Booster

Abstract Throughout the automobile industry, the electronic brake boost technologies have been widely applied to support the expansion of the using range of the driver assist technologies. The electronic brake booster (EBB) supports to precisely operate the brakes as necessary via building up the brake pressure faster than the vacuum brake booster. Therefore, in this article a novel control strategy for the EBB based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) is developed and studied. The configuration of the EBB is established and the system model including the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a two-stage reduction transmission (gears and a ball screw), a servo body, reaction disk, and the hydraulic load are modeled by MATLAB/Simulink. The load-dependent friction has been compensated by using Karnopp friction model. Due to the strong nonlinearity on the EBB components and the load-dependent friction, FLC has been used for the control algorithm.

An Improved Semi-Transient Brake Cooling Simulation Method

Abstract In this article, an improved brake cooling simulation method is introduced. By this method, the vehicle parameters, such as weight, height of the center of gravity, wheelbase, and the like can be included to calculate the braking thermal load under different operating conditions. The effect of the brake kinetic energy regeneration (BKER) on the braking thermal load can also be calculated by this method. The calculated braking thermal load is then input to a coupled 3D simulation model to conduct flow and thermal simulation to calculate brake disc temperature. It is demonstrated that by this simulation method, the difference between the brake disc temperatures obtained from simulation and vehicle test can be controlled below 5%.

Modeling and Comparing the Total Cost of Ownership of Passenger Automobiles with Conventional, Electric, and Hybrid Powertrains

Abstract The global automotive industry’s shift toward electrification hinges on battery electric vehicles (BEV) having a reduced total cost of ownership compared to traditional vehicles. Although BEVs exhibit lower operational costs than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, their initial acquisition expense is higher due to expensive battery packs. This study evaluates total ownership costs for four vehicle types: traditional ICE-based car, BEV, split-power hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. Unlike previous analyses comparing production vehicles, this study employs a hypothetical sedan with different powertrains for a more equitable assessment. The study uses a drive-cycle model grounded in fundamental vehicle dynamics to determine the fuel and electricity consumption for each vehicle in highway and urban conditions. These figures serve a Monte Carlo simulation, projecting a vehicle’s operating cost over a decade based on average daily distance and highway driving percentage.

A Combined Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Aerodynamics of a Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc

Abstract Composite ceramic brake discs are made of ceramic material reinforced with carbon fibers and offer exceptional advantages that translate directly into higher vehicle performance. In the case of an electric vehicle, it could increase the range of the vehicle, and in the case of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, it means lower fuel consumption (and consequently lower CO2 emissions). These discs are typically characterized by complex internal geometries, further complicated by the presence of drilling holes on both friction surfaces. To estimate the aerothermal performance of these discs, and for the thermal management of the vehicle, a reliable model for predicting the air flowing across the disc channels is needed. In this study, a real carbon-ceramic brake disc with drilling holes was investigated in a dedicated test rig simulating the wheel corner flow conditions experimentally using the particle image velocimetry technique and numerically.

Artificial Intelligence-Based Field-Programmable Gate Array Accelerator for Electric Vehicles Battery Management System

Abstract The swift progress of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has driven advancements in battery management systems (BMS). However, optimizing the algorithms that drive these systems remains a challenge. Recent breakthroughs in data science, particularly in deep learning networks, have introduced the long–short-term memory (LSTM) network as a solution for sequence problems. While graphics processing units (GPUs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) have been used to improve performance in AI-based applications, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have gained popularity due to their low power consumption and high-speed acceleration, making them ideal for artificial intelligence (AI) implementation. One of the critical components of EVs and HEVs is the BMS, which performs operations to optimize the use of energy stored in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs).

Estimation of Lateral Velocity and Cornering Stiffness in Vehicle Dynamics Based on Multi-Source Information Fusion

Abstract To address the challenge of directly measuring essential dynamic parameters of vehicles, this article introduces a multi-source information fusion estimation method. Using the intelligent front camera (IFC) sensor to analyze lane line polynomial information and a kinematic model, the vehicle’s lateral velocity and sideslip angle can be determined without extra sensor expenses. After evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the two aforementioned lateral velocity estimation techniques, a fusion estimation approach for lateral velocity is proposed. This approach extracts the vehicle’s lateral dynamic characteristics to calculate the fusion allocation coefficient. Subsequently, the outcomes from the two lateral velocity estimation techniques are merged, ensuring rapid convergence under steady-state conditions and precise tracking in dynamic scenarios.

A Comparative Study of Longitudinal Vehicle Control Systems in Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Connected Corridor

Abstract Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) connectivity technology presents the opportunity for vehicles to perform autonomous longitudinal control to navigate safely and efficiently through sequences of V2I-enabled intersections, known as connected corridors. Existing research has proposed several control systems to navigate these corridors while minimizing energy consumption and travel time. This article analyzes and compares the simulated performance of three different autonomous navigation systems in connected corridors: a V2I-informed constant acceleration kinematic controller (V2I-K), a V2I-informed model predictive controller (V2I-MPC), and a V2I-informed reinforcement learning (V2I-RL) agent. A rules-based controller that does not use V2I information is implemented to simulate a human driver and is used as a baseline. The performance metrics analyzed are net energy consumption, travel time, and root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration.

Reducing Greenhouse Emissions from Light-Duty Vehicles: Supply-Chain and Cost-Effectiveness Analyses Suggest a Near-Term Role for Hybrids

Abstract Policy makers generally favor all-electric vehicles over hybrid-electric vehicles because of greater unit effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions. Since both systems use lithium-ion batteries, global demand for batteries is projected to grow 10-fold by 2030. If any step in the global battery supply-chain experiences bottlenecks, shortages can occur. We use a novel cost-effectiveness metric, carbon reduction per unit of battery capacity consumed, to rank emissions reductions accomplished by, alternatively, eight plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, 75 hybrid-electric vehicles, and 230 mild hybrid-electric vehicles, which have the same total battery capacity as one all-electric vehicle. Our main finding, although counterintuitive, is that, with limited battery supplies, larger reductions in carbon emissions can be accomplished by hybrids than by all-electric vehicles.

Friction Performance Analysis of Mine Wet Multi-Disc Brake

Abstract This article takes the wet multi-disc brake used in mining Isuzu 600P as the research object, establishes a simplified three-dimensional model of its key components through SOLIDWORKS and imports it into ANSYS Workbench to establish the flow field and structure field model of the wet brake. Based on the fluid–solid coupling, the finite element simulation of the temperature field and stress field of the friction pair of the wet brake under different braking pressures, braking initial speeds, and fluid viscosities was carried out, and then the position changes of the friction pairs at high temperature hot spots and high stress points were analyzed to determine the stability of its friction performance. Finally, by comparing the temperature change curves of the same point during the braking process under different braking conditions, the validity of the finite element analysis results is verified.

Contribution to the Objective Evaluation of Combined Longitudinal and Lateral Vehicle Dynamics in Nonlinear Driving Range

Abstract Since the complexity of modern vehicles is increasing continuously, car manufacturers are forced to improve the efficiency of their development process to remain profitable. A frequently mentioned measure is the consequent integration of virtual methods. In this regard, objective evaluation criteria are essential for the virtual design of driving dynamics. Therefore, this article aims to identify robust objective evaluation criteria for the nonlinear combined longitudinal and lateral dynamics of a vehicle. The article focuses on the acceleration in a turn maneuver since available objective criteria do not consider all relevant characteristics of vehicle dynamics. For the identification of the objective criteria, a generic method is developed and applied. First, an open-loop test procedure and a set of potential robust objective criteria are defined.

Driving Cycle-Based Energy Management Strategy Development for Range-Extended Electric Vehicles

Abstract Environmental concerns and technological progress push the development and market penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). On the other hand, transportation systems are becoming more efficient by improved communication systems within vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure. In this study, a driving cycle-based energy management strategy is developed for range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) to increase system efficiency and equivalent vehicle range. A validated vehicle model is developed by critical subsystem testing and a comparative study is conducted to assess the developed strategy. The results showed that the optimized strategy can save CO2 emission by 6.21%, 1.77%, and 0.58% for heavy, moderate, and light traffic, respectively. Furthermore, the efficient use of a range extender (REx), guided by traffic data, extends the vehicle range, especially in heavy traffic conditions.

Recurrent Neural Network Model for On-Board Estimation of the Side-Slip Angle in a Four-Wheel Drive and Steering Vehicle

Abstract A valuable quantity for analyzing the lateral dynamics of road vehicles is the side-slip angle, that is, the angle between the vehicle’s longitudinal axis and its speed direction. A reliable real-time side-slip angle value enables several features, such as stability controls, identification of understeer and oversteer conditions, estimation of lateral forces during cornering, or tire grip and wear estimation. Since the direct measurement of this variable can only be done with complex and expensive devices, it is worth trying to estimate it through virtual sensors based on mathematical models. This article illustrates a methodology for real-time on-board estimation of the side-slip angle through a machine learning model (SSE—side-slip estimator). It exploits a recurrent neural network trained and tested via on-road experimental data acquisition. In particular, the machine learning model only uses input signals from a standard road car sensor configuration.
