Bayesian Network Model and Causal Analysis of Ship Collisions in Zhejiang Coastal Waters

Abstract For taking counter measures in advance to prevent accidental risks, it is of significance to explore the causes and evolutionary mechanism of ship collisions. This article collects 70 ship collision accidents in Zhejiang coastal waters, where 60 cases are used for modeling while 10 cases are used for verification (testing). By analyzing influencing factors (IFs) and causal chains of accidents, a Bayesian network (BN) model with 19 causal nodes and 1 consequential node is constructed. Parameters of the BN model, namely the conditional probability tables (CPTs), are determined by mathematical statistics methods and Bayesian formulas. Regarding each testing case, the BN model’s prediction on probability of occurrence is above 80% (approaching 100% indicates the certainty of occurrence), which verifies the availability of the model. Causal analysis based on the backward reasoning process shows that H (Human error) is the main IF resulting in ship collisions.

Assessing the Impact of Rubberized Asphalt on Reducing Hip Fracture Risk in Elderly Populations Using Human Body Models

Abstract Compared to other age groups, older adults are at more significant risk of hip fracture when they fall. In addition to the higher risk of falls for the elderly, fear of falls can reduce this population’s outdoor activity. Various preventive solutions have been proposed to reduce the risk of hip fractures ranging from wearable hip protectors to indoor flooring systems. A previously developed rubberized asphalt mixture demonstrated the potential to reduce the risk of head injury. In the current study, the capability of the rubberized asphalt sample was evaluated for the risk of hip fracture for an average elderly male and an average elderly female. A previously developed human body model was positioned in a fall configuration that would give the highest impact forces toward regular asphalt.

Fire Safety of Battery Electric Vehicles: Hazard Identification, Detection, and Mitigation

Abstract Battery electric vehicles (EVs) bring significant benefits in reducing the carbon footprint of fossil fuels and new opportunities for adopting renewable energy. Because of their high-energy density and long cycle life, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are dominating the battery market, and the consumer demand for LIB-powered EVs is expected to continue to boom in the next decade. However, the chemistry used in LIBs is still vulnerable to experiencing thermal runaway, especially in harsh working conditions. Furthermore, as LIB technology moves to larger scales of power and energy, the safety issues turn out to be the most intolerable pain point of its application in EVs. Its failure could result in the release of toxic gases, fire, and even explosions, causing catastrophic damage to life and property. Vehicle fires are an often-overlooked part of the fire problem. Fire protection and EV safety fall into different disciplines.

Employing a Model of Computation for Testing and Verifying the Security of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract Testing and verifying the security of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) under cyber-physical attacks is a critical challenge for ensuring their safety and reliability. Proposed in this article is a novel testing framework based on a model of computation that generates scenarios and attacks in a closed-loop manner, while measuring the safety of the unit under testing (UUT), using a verification vector. The framework was applied for testing the performance of two cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) controllers under false data injection (FDI) attacks. Serving as the baseline controller is one of a traditional design, while the proposed controller uses a resilient design that combines a model and learning-based algorithm to detect and mitigate FDI attacks in real-time.

Safety Concepts for Future Electromechanical Brake Actuators

Abstract A growing interest in electromechanical brakes (EMB) is discernible in the automotive industry finding its climax in an announcement of EMB series production in late 2022 [1]. The introduction of EMB allows for new design opportunities using distributed software on smart actuators. However, additional efforts are needed to ensure continuously high levels of safety even when established design principles in the brake system are changed. This article discusses different safety concepts that could potentially be put in place in EMB actuators. Therefore, safety goals that need to be satisfied by an actuator are derived. Furthermore, three different degrees of complexity are differentiated, evolving to different required electronic control units (ECU) and architectures. Additionally, also the safety of the actuation unit (AU) is considered to realize a holistic safety concept for the actuator. Finally, a conclusion is drawn comparing the different investigated concepts.

Forensic Analysis of Lithium-Ion Cells Involved in Fires

Abstract The emerging use of rechargeable batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles and distributed energy systems, and accidental fires involving batteries, has heightened the need for a methodology to determine the root cause of the fire. When a fire involving batteries takes place, investigators and engineers need to ascertain the role of batteries in that fire. Just as with fire in general, investigators need a framework for determining the role that is systematic, reliant on collection and careful analysis of forensic evidence, and based on the scientific method of inquiry. This article presents a systematic scientific process to analyze batteries that have been involved in a fire. It involves examining Li-ion cells of varying construction, using a systematic process that includes visual inspection, x-ray, CT scan, and possibly elemental analysis and testing of exemplars.

An Improved Semi-Transient Brake Cooling Simulation Method

Abstract In this article, an improved brake cooling simulation method is introduced. By this method, the vehicle parameters, such as weight, height of the center of gravity, wheelbase, and the like can be included to calculate the braking thermal load under different operating conditions. The effect of the brake kinetic energy regeneration (BKER) on the braking thermal load can also be calculated by this method. The calculated braking thermal load is then input to a coupled 3D simulation model to conduct flow and thermal simulation to calculate brake disc temperature. It is demonstrated that by this simulation method, the difference between the brake disc temperatures obtained from simulation and vehicle test can be controlled below 5%.

A Novel Approach to Light Detection and Ranging Sensor Placement for Autonomous Driving Vehicles Using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Algorithm

Abstract This article presents a novel approach to optimize the placement of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors in autonomous driving vehicles using machine learning. As autonomous driving technology advances, LiDAR sensors play a crucial role in providing accurate collision data for environmental perception. The proposed method employs the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, which takes the vehicle’s surface geometry as input and generates optimized 3D sensor positions with predicted high visibility. Through extensive experiments on various vehicle shapes and a rectangular cuboid, the effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed method are demonstrated. Importantly, the trained network can efficiently evaluate new vehicle shapes without the need for re-optimization, representing a significant improvement over classical methods such as genetic algorithms.

Integrated Four-Wheel Steering and Direct Yaw-Moment Control for Autonomous Collision Avoidance on Curved Road

Abstract An automatic collision avoidance control method integrating optimal four-wheel steering (4WS) and direct yaw-moment control (DYC) for autonomous vehicles on curved road is proposed in this study. Optimal four-wheel steering is used to track a predetermined trajectory, and DYC is adopted for vehicle stability. Two single lane change collision avoidance scenarios, i.e., a stationary obstacle in front and a moving obstacle at a lower speed in the same lane, are constructed to verify the proposed control method. The main contributions of this article include (1) a quintic polynomial lane change trajectory for collision avoidance on curved road is proposed and (2) four different kinds of control method for autonomous collision avoidance, namely 2WS, 2WS+DYC, 4WS, and 4WS+DYC, are compared. In the design of DYC controller, two different feedback control methods are adopted for comparison, i.e., sideslip angle feedback and yaw rate feedback.

Path-Tracking Control of Soft-Target Vehicle Test System Based on Compensation Weight Coefficient Matrix and Adaptive Preview Time

Abstract In order to enhance the path-tracking accuracy and adaptability of the electric flatbed vehicle (EFV) in the soft-target vehicle test system, an improved controller is designed based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) algorithm. First, the LQR feedback controller is designed based on the EFV dynamics tracking error model, and the genetic algorithm is utilized to obtain the optimal weight coefficient matrix for different speeds. Second, a weight coefficient matrix compensation strategy is proposed to address the changes in the relationship between the vehicle–road position and attitude caused by external disturbances and the state of EFV. An offline parameter table is created to reduce the computational load on the microcontroller of EFV and enhance real-time path-tracking performance. Furthermore, an adaptive preview time control strategy is added to reduce the overshooting caused by control delay. This strategy is based on road curvature and traveling speed.

A Combined Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Aerodynamics of a Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc

Abstract Composite ceramic brake discs are made of ceramic material reinforced with carbon fibers and offer exceptional advantages that translate directly into higher vehicle performance. In the case of an electric vehicle, it could increase the range of the vehicle, and in the case of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, it means lower fuel consumption (and consequently lower CO2 emissions). These discs are typically characterized by complex internal geometries, further complicated by the presence of drilling holes on both friction surfaces. To estimate the aerothermal performance of these discs, and for the thermal management of the vehicle, a reliable model for predicting the air flowing across the disc channels is needed. In this study, a real carbon-ceramic brake disc with drilling holes was investigated in a dedicated test rig simulating the wheel corner flow conditions experimentally using the particle image velocimetry technique and numerically.

An Energy-Efficient Merge-Aware Cruise Control Method for Connected Electric Vehicles

Abstract This article presents a merge-aware cruise control method that incorporates vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) information and aims at improving the energy efficiency of vehicles and reducing speed disruptions of merging traffic during highway merges. During the events of highway merges, the gap between the ego and the preceding vehicle reduces drastically, which can result in sudden braking of the ego vehicle and thus reduction of its energy efficiency. We propose a rather simple cruise control algorithm to eliminate such sudden variations in the gap and velocity with respect to the preceding vehicle during highway merges, thus reducing the large accelerations and braking during such events and thereby improving energy efficiency. The proposed algorithm incorporates future traffic information and has computational requirements similar to adaptive cruise control methods, hence it is real-time applicable.

Using Latent Heat Storage for Improving Battery Electric Vehicle Thermal Management System Efficiency

Abstract One of the key problems of battery electric vehicles is the risk of severe range reduction in winter conditions. Technologies such as heat pump systems can help to mitigate such effects, but finding adequate heat sources for the heat pump sometimes can be a problem, too. In cold ambient conditions below −10°C and for a cold-soaked vehicle this can become a limiting factor. Storing waste heat or excess cold when it is generated and releasing it to the vehicle thermal management system later can reduce peak thermal requirements to more manageable average levels. In related architectures it is not always necessary to replace existing electric heaters or conventional air-conditioning systems. Sometimes it is more efficient to keep them and support them, instead. Accordingly, we show, how latent heat storage can be used to increase the efficiency of existing, well-established heating and cooling technologies without replacing them.

Review of Gas Generation Behavior during Thermal Runaway of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract Due to the limitations of current battery manufacturing processes, integration technology, and operating conditions, the large-scale application of lithium-ion batteries in the fields of energy storage and electric vehicles has led to an increasing number of fire accidents. When a lithium-ion battery undergoes thermal runaway, it undergoes complex and violent reactions, which can lead to combustion and explosion, accompanied by the production of a large amount of flammable and toxic gases. These flammable gases continue to undergo chemical reactions at high temperatures, producing complex secondary combustion products. This article systematically summarizes the gas generation characteristics of different types and states of batteries under different thermal runaway triggering conditions. And based on this, proposes the key research directions for the gas generation characteristics of lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-Ion Battery Thermal Event and Protection: A Review

Abstract The exponentially growing electrification market is driving demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high performance. However, LIB thermal runaway events are one of the unresolved safety concerns. Thermal runaway of an individual LIB can cause a chain reaction of runaway events in nearby cells, or thermal propagation, potentially causing significant battery fires and explosions. Such a safety issue of LIBs raises a huge concern for a variety of applications including electric vehicles (EVs). With increasingly higher energy-density battery technologies being implemented in EVs to enable a longer driving mileage per charge, LIB safety enhancement is becoming critical for customers. This comprehensive review offers an encompassing overview of prevalent abuse conditions, the thermal event processes and mechanisms associated with LIBs, and various strategies for suppression, prevention, and mitigation.

Pedestrian Intention Prediction and Style Recognition in Bird’s-Eye View

Abstract In this article, pedestrian crossing intention and pedestrian crossing style are studied by means of statistical theory and artificial neural network. Feature parameters such as the average speed of pedestrians, pedestrian attention to vehicles, and vehicle arrival speed are extracted before and during the time pedestrians cross the street from a bird’s-eye view. Based on these parameters, an artificial neural network is used to predict the pedestrian crossing intention. K-means statistical method was used to cluster the pedestrian crossing styles, and the results showed that clustering the crossing styles into three categories, conservative, cautious, and adventurous, has a better classification effect, and the crossing behaviors of different types of pedestrians were analyzed. A random forest-based model is used to identify pedestrian crossing styles, the prediction accuracy reaches 91.83% and the recognition accuracy reaches 93.3%.

Emergency Obstacle Avoidance Trajectory Planning Method of Intelligent Vehicles Based on Improved Hybrid A*

Abstract In this article, we present a spatiotemporal trajectory planning algorithm for emergency obstacle avoidance. Utilizing obstacle and driving environment data from the sensing module, we construct a 3D spatiotemporal grid map. This informs our improved hybrid A* algorithm, which identifies collision-safe, dynamically feasible trajectories. The traditional hybrid A* algorithm is enhanced in three significant ways to make the search practical and feasible: (1) optimizing search efficiency with motion primitives based on child node acceleration, (2) integrating collision risk into the heuristic function to reduce ineffective node exploration, and (3) introducing a One-Shot search based on the Optimal Boundary Value Problem (OBVP) to improve goal state searches. Finally, the algorithm is tested in two scenarios: (1) a vehicle cut-in from an adjacent lane and (2) a pedestrian crossing.

Experimental Study on Ship Squat in Intermediate Channel

Abstract The sinking and trimming of the hull in the channel would directly affect the handling and navigation safety of the ship. In view of the ship sinking, a series of empirical formulas to estimate the subsidence have been put forward for vessel in spacious shallow water areas. However, most of the equations are based on seagoing vessels. They are not suitable for inland ships with small scales, shallow drafts, and narrow navigation width. Till now, research on ship squat in intermediate channel has not yielded more practical results. Here, a generalized physical model is used to study the sinking of 500t class ships in restricted intermediate channel under different channel widths, water depths, and speeds. The main factors affecting the squat are analyzed, the empirical relation is compared with the measured squat. The Barrass equation is modified, and the calculation relation of the settlement suitable for inland river ships is proposed.

Study of Vehicle-Based Metrics for Assessing the Severity of Side Impacts

Abstract A research program has been launched in Iran to develop an evaluation method for comparing the safety performance of vehicles in real-world collisions with crash test results. The goal of this research program is to flag vehicle models whose safety performance in real-world accidents does not match their crash test results. As part of this research program, a metric is needed to evaluate the severity of side impacts in crash tests and real-world accidents. In this work, several vehicle-based metrics were analyzed and calculated for a dataset of more than 500 side impact tests from the NHTSA crash test database. The correlation between the metric values and the dummy injury criteria was studied to find the most appropriate metric with the strongest correlation coefficient values with the dummy injury criteria.
