The Federal Aviation Administration has been engaged in research and development efforts aimed at reducing the fire hazard during impact-survivable aircraft crashes by modifying kerosene jet fuels. Primary emphasis has been placed on utilizing high molecular weight, polymeric additives to produce antimisting kerosene fuels which are compatible with commercial transport aircraft and engine fuel systems and are more resistant to vaporization, ignition, and flame propagation in the crash situation. The program background is reviewed, and recently-completed research and development efforts are discussed. Topics covered include the rheological, physical, and flammability properties; the airport production techniques; and aircraft fuel system compatibility characteristics of antimisting kerosene fuel. The results of the full-scale validation phase of the program are also discussed, including aircraft ground and flight tests and a full-scale transport aircraft impact demonstration.
