Diesel Emission Production Audit Test Procedure

2002-10-21
CURRENT
J1243_200210
This SAE Recommended Practice applies to a production dynamometer test procedure which can be used to measure the smoke and gaseous emission characteristics of vehicular diesel engines. This procedure describes the smoke emission test method, smoke test cycle, gaseous emission test method, steady-state gaseous emission test cycle, equipment, instrumentation, calibration, data analysis, and correlation of results for comparison of production engine emission performance to the requirements of current or past Federal regulations. Variations in engines, instrumentation, and test equipment may require modifications to these procedures or data reduction methods. The acceptability of this procedure is dependent upon documented statistical data appropriate to correlate all tests, data reduction techniques, and special instrumentation to the required Federal tests.

Guide to the Application and Use of Engine Coolant Pump Face Seals

2000-11-07
HISTORICAL
J1245_200011
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide in the usage of mechanical face seals for the engine coolant pump application. The main purpose of the document is to fill the void caused by the lack of a ready source of practical information on the design and use of the engine coolant pump face seal. Included in the document is a compilation of present practices, as in a description of the various types of seals, material combinations, design data, tolerances, drawing format, qualification and inspection information, and quality control data. The terminology used throughout the document is recommended and, through common usage, is hoped to promote uniformity in seal nomenclature.

STANDARD CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR NONMETALLIC AUTOMOTIVE GASKET MATERIALS

1995-03-25
HISTORICAL
J90_199503
The classification system provides a means for specifying or describing pertinent properties of commercial nonmetallic gasket materials. Materials composed of asbestos, cork, cellulose, and other organic or inorganic materials in combination with various binders or impregnants are included. Materials normally classified as rubber compounds are not included, since they are covered in SAE J200—ASTM D 2000. Gasket coatings are not covered, since details thereof are intended to be given on engineering drawings or in separate specifications.

DIESEL ENGINE SMOKE MEASUREMENT

1995-02-24
HISTORICAL
J255_199502
Measurement of diesel smoke in an accurate and consistent manner has been a serious problem for engine and vehicle manufacturers, users, and agencies charged with enforcing smoke limits. Several instruments, based on different principles and using different scales, are commonly used. In addition to these, human observation and judgment are often used to relate smoke to a variety of standards. The purpose of this SAE Information Report is to provide an understanding of the nature of diesel smoke, how it can be measured, and how the various measurement methods can be correlated. Except for defining the various types of smoke, the report deals solely with the steady-state measurement of visible, black smoke emitted from diesel engines. For the benefit of those who wish to study various aspects of the subject in greater depth, a list of useful references is included in Section 2. This document is divided into the following sections:
