On Demand Octane Number Enhancement Technology by Aerobic Oxidation

For the purpose of developing onboard gasoline reforming technology for higher octane number fuel on demand, octane number enhancement of gasoline surrogate by aerobic oxidation using N-hydroxyphthalimide catalyst was investigated. At first, octane numbers of the oxygen-containing products from alkane and aromatic compound were estimated using a fuel ignition analyzer. As a result, not only alcohol but also ketones and aldehydes have higher octane numbers than the original alkanes and aromatic compound. Next, gasoline surrogate was oxidized aerobically with N-hydroxyphthalimide derivative catalyst and cobalt catalyst at conditions below 100 °C. As a result, fuel molecules were oxidized to produce alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids. N-hydroxyphthalimide derivative catalyst with higher solubility in gasoline surrogate has higher oxidation ability. Furthermore, the estimated octane number of the oxidized gasoline surrogate improves 17 RON.

Effect of Mixture Stratification and Fuel Reactivity on Dual-Fuel Compression Ignition Combustion Process for SI-Based Engine

Compression ignition combustion with a lean mixture has high potential in terms of high theoretical thermal efficiency and low NOx emission characteristics due to low combustion temperatures. In particular, a Dual-Fuel concept is proposed to achieve high ignition timing controllability and an extended operation range. This concept controls ignition timing by adjusting the fraction of two fuels with different ignition characteristics. However, a rapid combustion process after initial ignition cannot be avoided due to the homogenous nature of the fuel mixture, because the combustion process depends entirely on the high reaction rate of thermal ignition. In this study, the effect of mixture stratification in the cylinder on the combustion process after ignition based on the Dual-Fuel concept was investigated. Port injection of one fuel creates the homogeneous mixture, while direct injection of the other fuel prepares a stratified mixture in the cylinder at the compression stroke.

Laser Breakdown-Assisted Long-Distance Discharge Ignition

We developed a novel ignition method called laser breakdown-assisted long-distance discharge ignition (LBALDI) that combines laser breakdown with a discharge to realize lean combustion. The creation of laser breakdown plasma between electrodes for discharge enables discharges over longer distances than those of conventional sparkplug as inferred from laser-triggered lightning or laser-triggered gas switches. This method should help realize volumetric ignition through the creation of a long-distance discharge. Experiments on the fundamental discharge and ignition of methane/air mixtures were conducted. The optimum incident time of the laser prior to the application of a high voltage was found to reduce the sparkover voltage and markedly reduce the voltage required by LBALDI under pressurized air conditions. In the ignition experiment, LBALDI showed the fastest heat release rate at the lean flammable limit.

Combustion Enhancement of Methane/Air Mixture by Nonthermal Plasma Processing

Technology for the enhancement of compression ignition for a natural-gas homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine was developed using nonthermal plasma. Specifically, nonthermal plasma was utilized to enhance the ignition of the methane/air premixture by irradiating it in an intake tube. The effect of the irradiation on compression ignition was investigated using a rapid compression and expansion machine; the ignition delay was found to shorten by the influence of irradiation. The dependence of the ignition delay time on the temperature at the end of compression was determined. Chemical analysis of the plasma-processed gas was performed using a gas detection tube as a simple method and ion-attachment ionization mass spectrometry (IAMS) as a novel method. A chemical kinetic simulation was also conducted to examine the temperature dependence of the ignition delay.

Dual-Point Laser Ignition and its Location Effects on Combustion in Lean-Burn Gas Engine

As a result of the excavation of unconventional sources of natural gas, which has rich reserves, has attracted attention as a fuel for use in natural gas engines for power generation. From the viewpoints of efficient resource utilization and environmental protection, lean burn is an attractive technique for realizing a higher thermal efficiency with lower NOx emissions. However, ignition systems have to be improved for lean-burn operations. Laser ignition, which is expected to serve as an alternative to spark plug ignition, can decrease the heat loss and has no restriction on the ignition location because of the absence of an electrode. Consequently, an extension of the lean-burn limit by laser ignition has been demonstrated. In this study, we investigated the effects of the location and number of laser ignition points on engine performance and exhaust emissions. Laser ignition was also compared with conventional spark plug ignition.

Control of Pressure-Rise Rates of Compression Ignition by Stratification of Reformed Premixture Using Pulsed DBD Irradiation

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was applied to control the pressure-rise rate of homogeneous compression ignition, which is an important obstacle for homogeneous charge combustion engines. DBD can produce nonthermal plasmas and has been generated in air/fuel mixtures to reform some of the fuel molecules found in such mixtures. This generally shortens the ignition delay of compression ignition of the air/fuel premixture. Stratification of the reformed premixture in the combustion chamber was achieved by pulsed DBD irradiation during the induction process. The formation of inhomogeneous distribution of the reformed premixture is expected by the formation of discharge at the end of the intake processes. A demonstrative experiment was conducted by using a rapid compression and expansion machine. A simple plasma reactor was developed and installed at the intake tube. High-voltage, high-frequency pulses were applied to form plasmas. n-Heptane was used as fuel.

Development of Gasoline Combustion Reaction Model

Gasoline includes various kinds of chemical species. Thus, the reaction model of gasoline components that includes the low-temperature oxidation and ignition reaction is necessary to investigate the method to control the combustion process of the gasoline engine. In this study, a gasoline combustion reaction model including n-paraffin, iso-paraffin, olefin, naphthene, alcohol, ether, and aromatic compound was developed. KUCRS (Knowledge-basing Utilities for Complex Reaction Systems) [1] was modified to produce paraffin, olefin, naphthene, alcohol automatically. Also, the toluene reactions of gasoline surrogate model developed by Sakai et al. [2] including toluene, PRF (Primary Reference Fuel), ethanol, and ETBE (Ethyl-tert-butyl-ether) were modified. The universal rule of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants were clarified by using quantum chemical calculation.

Methodology of Lubricity Evaluation for DME Fuel based on HFRR

The methodology of lubricity evaluation for DME fuel was established by special modified HFRR (High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig) such as Multi-Pressure/Temperature HFRR (MPT-HFRR). The obtained results were summarized as follows: The HFRR method is adaptable with DME fuel. There is no effect of the test pressure (up to 1.8 MPa) and the test temperature (up to 100°C) of MPT-HFRR on wear scar diameter. The results with MPT-HFRR can be applied at the sliding parts of the injection needle and the fuel supply pump's plungers which are secured lubricity by the boundary lubrication mode mainly and the mixed lubrication mode partially. Using the fatty-acid-based lubricity improver in amounts of approximately 100 ppm, the lubricity of DME, which has a lack of self-lubricity, is ensured as same as the diesel fuel equivalent level. There is a big deviation of measured wear scar diameter when the LI concentration is not enough.

Investigation of Fuel Impurities Effect on DME Powered Diesel Engine System

DME as a fuel for compression ignition (diesel) engines has been actively studied for about ten years due to its characteristically low pollution and reputation as a “smokeless fuel”. During this time, the practical application is taking shape based on necessary tasks such as analysis of injection and combustion, engine performance, and development of experimental vehicles. At this moment, standardization of DME as a fuel was started under ISO in 2007. There are concerns regarding the impurities in DME regarding the mixing during production and distribution as well as their effect on additives for lubricity and odor. In this report, the effect of DME fuel impurities on performance of a DME powered diesel engine was investigated. The platform was a DME engine with common-rail fuel injection and was evaluated under partial load stable mode and Japanese transient mode (JE05) testing parameters.

Study on Improvement of Combustion and Effect of Fuel Property in Advanced Diesel Engine

The tasks to improve diesel emissions and fuel consumption must be accomplished with urgency. However, due to the trade-off relationship between NOx emissions, soot emissions and fuel consumption, clean diesel combustion should be achieved by both innovative combustion and fuel technologies. The objective of this study is to extend the clean diesel combustion operating range (Engine-out emission: NOx ≺ 0.2 g/kWh, Soot ≺ 0.02 g/kWh). In this study, performance of a single-cylinder test engine equipped with a hydraulic valve actuation system and an ultra-high pressure fuel injection system was investigated. Also evaluated, were the effects of fuel properties such as auto-ignitability, volatility and aromatic hydrocarbon components, on combustion performance. The results show that applying a high EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) rate can significantly reduce NOx emission with an increase in soot emission.

Inhibition Effect of Ethanol on Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition of Heptane

It is important in the application of bio-ethanol in homogeneous-charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines to investigate the HCCI combustion characteristics of ethanol. As the inhibitory mechanism of ethanol on HCCI combustion is a key factor, simulated chemical reactions are necessary. In this study, chemical reaction simulations in the combustion chamber of a rapid compression machine (RCM) were performed in order to investigate the inhibitory mechanism of ethanol on the HCCI combustion of heptane. The sensitivity analysis results suggested that the OH radical consumption reaction by ethanol that occurs would inhibit the cool flame reaction of heptane. Furthermore, visualization of HCCI combustion with the RCM was conducted using a quartz glass combustion chamber head and ICCD camera. As a result, the cool flame luminescence intensity of heptane was reduced by the addition of ethanol.

A Study of Fuel Auto-ignitability on Premixed Compression Ignition Characteristics

It has been clarified that diesel fuel properties have a great effect on the exhaust emissions and fuel consumption of a conventional diesel combustion regime. And as other diesel combustion regimes are applied in order to improve exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, it can be supposed that the fuel properties also have significant effects. The purpose of this study is to propose the optimum diesel fuel properties for a premixed compression ignition (PCI) combustion regime. In this paper, the effect of the auto-ignitability of diesel fuels on exhaust emissions and fuel consumption was evaluated using a heavy-duty single-cylinder test engine. In all experiments, fuels were injected using an electronically controlled, common-rail diesel fuel injector, and most experiments were conducted under high EGR conditions in order to reduce NOx emissions.

Study on HCCI-SI Combustion Using Fuels Ethanol Containing

Bio-ethanol is one of the candidates for automotive alternative fuels. For reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, it is important to investigate its optimum combustion procedure. This study has explored effect of ethanol fuels on HCCI-SI hybrid combustion using dual fuel injection (DFI). Steady and transient characteristics of the HCCI-SI hybrid combustion were evaluated using a single cylinder engine and a four-cylinder engine equipped with two port injectors and a direct injector. The experimental results indicated that DFI has the potential for optimizing ignition timing of HCCI combustion and for suppressing knock in SI combustion under fixed compression ratio. The HCCI-SI hybrid combustion using DFI achieved increasing efficiency compared to conventional SI combustion.

Effect of Ethanol on the HCCI Combustion

Bio-ethanol is one of the most promising alternative fuels for vehicles. It is important for the spread of bio-ethanol to investigate its ignition quality and its optimum combustion procedure. It is particularly important for the application of bio-ethanol to a homogeneous-charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine to investigate the HCCI combustion characteristics of ethanol. In this study, the inhibiting effects of ethanol on the HCCI combustion of heptane were investigated by using a rapid compression machine (RCM) under various conditions. The results indicate that ethanol effectively retarded the hot ignition period of HCCI combustion due to its effective retardation of the cool flame period. The hot ignition peak period for 30 wt% ethanol/70 wt% heptane was more delayed than that of PRF having an octane number of 60 under the ϕ=0.4 condition.

Evaluation of Medium Duty DME Truck Performance -Field Test Results and PM Characteristics-

The performance of a medium duty DME truck was evaluated by field tests and engine bench tests. The DME vehicle was given a public license plate on October 2004, after which running tests were continued on public roads and a test course. The DME vehicle could run the whole distance, about 500 km, without refueling. The average diesel equivalent fuel consumption of the fully loaded DME truck was 5.75 km/l, running at 80 km/h on public highways. Remedying several malfunctions that occurred in the power-train subsystems enhanced the vehicle performance and operation. The DME vehicle accumulated 13,000 km as of August, 2006 with no observed durability trouble of the fuel injection pump. Disassembly and inspection of the fuel injectors after 7,700 km operation revealed a few differences in the nozzle tip and the needle compared to diesel fuel operation. However, the injectors were used again after cleanup.

Studies of Fuel Properties and Oxidation Stability of Biodiesel Fuel

Biodiesel fuel has attracted much attention as a carbon neutral fuel because it is made from vegetable oil. Especially in Southeast Asia, there are numerous biofuel resources, such as palm oil and coconut oil, and it is desirable to utilize these for CO2 reduction. In this paper, we evaluate the properties of biodiesel fuel and biodiesel blended diesel oil. The low temperature performance of palm oil methyl ester (PME) is poor and it affects low temperature performance, even if the PME blending rate is low. The oxidation stability is a very important property of biodiesel fuel because degraded biodiesel fuel produces organic acids and polymeric substances. PME contains mainly saturated fatty acids methyl esters, so the oxidation stability is better than other fats and oils. When containing antioxidants such as beta carotene, biodiesel's oxidation stability is improved.

Fuel Ignition Quality Control by Addition and Catalytic Decomposition of Cetane Improver

A new method for controlling fuel ignition quality has been developed. A cetane improver, such as organic peroxide, is added to a base fuel to create a fuel with higher ignition quality. The cetane improver in the fuel is then decomposed using a catalyst. This process lowers the ignition quality. To demonstrate this concept, the effects of a cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) addition and its catalytic decomposition on fuel ignition quality were investigated. It was found that addition of CHP improved ignition quality in the base fuel, and that following catalytic decomposition, the ignition quality was reduced below that of the base fuel.

Japanese Standards for Diesel Fuel Containing 5% FAME: Investigation of Acid Generation in FAME Blended Diesel Fuels and Its Impact on Corrosion

The Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has conducted conformity tests of diesel fuel containing Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) to amend diesel fuel standards in Japan. The objective of the tests is to examine appropriate specifications of diesel fuel containing FAME for automotive use for existing vehicles in the Japanese market. The conformity testing includes verification of fuel system component compatibility, tail pipe emissions, and characterization of the reliability and durability of the engine system, including the fuel injection system. In designing the conformity tests, the maximum FAME concentration was 5%. Most of the new standards are essentially equivalent to EN14214, but the total acid number (TAN) of specific acids, and oxidation stability of the new standards for diesel fuel containing FAME, are different from EN14214.

Research and Development of a Medium Duty DME Truck

Dimethyl ether (DME) has been attracting notable attention as a clean alternative fuel for diesel engines. The authors developed a medium duty DME truck, and investigated aspects of vehicle performance such as engine power, exhaust characteristics, fuel consumption, noise, in-vehicle systems, and so on. Results indicated that higher engine torque and power could be achieved with DME compared to diesel fuel operation of the base engine at any engine speed. Results also showed that emissions decreased dramatically, to 27% for NOx, 74% for HC, 95% for CO and 94% for PM (Particulate Matter) compared to maximum allowed Japanese 2003 emission regulations. The operating noise of the DME vehicle was slightly lower than the base vehicle with diesel fuel, because the combustion noise with DME was decreased compared to with diesel fuel operation. The DME vehicle was given a public license plate in October 2004, after which running test continued on public roads and on a test course.

Measurement of Trace Levels of Harmful Substances Emitted from a DME DI Diesel Engine

In this report, trace levels of harmful substances, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, SO2, benzene and so on, emitted from a DME fueled direct injection (DI) compression ignition (CI) engine were measured using a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) emission analyzer. Results showed that the NO portion of NOx emissions with DME exceeded diesel fuel operation levels. DME fueling caused greater amounts of water than with diesel fuel operation. DME fueling was also associated with higher formaldehyde emissions than with diesel fuel operation. However, using an oxidation catalyst, formaldehyde could be decreased to a negligible level.
