High-Load Engine Simulation of Renewable Diesel Fuel Using A Reduced Mechanism

According to the Annual Energy Outlook 2022 (AEO2022) report, almost 30% of the transport sector will still use internal combustion engines (ICE) until 2050. The transportation sector has been actively seeking different methods to reduce the CO2 emissions footprint of fossil fuels. The use of lower carbon-intensity fuels such as Renewable Diesel (RD) can enable a pathway to decarbonize the transport industry. This suggests the need for experimental or advanced numerical studies of RD to gain an understanding of its combustion and emissions performance. This work presents a numerical modeling approach to study the combustion and emissions of RD. The numerical model utilized the development of a reduced chemical kinetic mechanism for RD’s fuel chemistry. The final reduced mechanism for RD consists of 139 species and 721 reactions, which significantly shortened the computational time from using the detailed mechanism.

Improved Combustion Efficiency in Methanol/Renewable Diesel Dual Fuel Combustion by Advanced Injection Timing and Increased Intake Temperature: Single-Cylinder Experiment

Conventional diesel combustion (CDC) is known to provide high efficiency and reliable engine performance, but often associated with high particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions. Combustion of fossil diesel fuel also produces carbon dioxide (CO2), which acts as a harmful greenhouse gas (GHG). Renewable and low-carbon fuels such as renewable diesel (RD) and methanol can play an important role in reducing harmful criteria and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. This paper details an experimental study using a single-cylinder research engine operated under dual-fuel combustion using methanol and RD. Various engine operating strategies were used to achieve diesel-like fuel efficiency. Measurements of engine-out emissions and in-cylinder pressure were taken at test conditions including low-load and high-load operating points.

Numerical Study of Dual Fuel Methanol/Diesel Combustion under Engine-like Condition

Alternative fuels such as methanol can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when used in internal combustion engines (ICEs). This study characterized the combustion of methanol, methanol/diesel, and methanol/renewable diesel numerically. Numerical findings were also compared with engine experiments using a single-cylinder engine (SCE). The engine was operated under a dual-fuel combustion mode: methanol was fumigated at the intake port, and diesel was injected inside the cylinder. The characteristic of ignition delay trend as methanol concentration increased is being described at low temperature (low engine load) and high temperature (high engine load) conditions.

Engine and Emissions Performance of Renewable Diesel in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine: A Single-cylinder Engine Experiment

As an alternative fuel, renewable diesel (RD) could improve the performance of conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) because of its difference in fuel properties. With almost no aromatic content in the fuel, RD produces less soot emissions than diesel. The higher cetane number (CN) of RD also promotes ignition of the fuel, which is critical, especially under low load, and low reactivity conditions. This study tested RD fuel in a heavy-duty single-cylinder engine (SCE) under compression-ignition (CI) operation. Test condition includes low and high load points with change in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and start of injection (SOI). Measurements and analysis are provided to study combustion and emissions, including particulate matters (PM) mass and particle number (PN). It was found that while the combustion of RD and diesel are very similar, PM and PN emissions of RD were reduced substantially compared to diesel.

A Predictive Model for Spark Stretch and Mixture Ignition in SI Engines

A physics-based spark ignition model was developed and integrated into a commercial CFD code. The model predicted the spark discharge process based on the electrical parameters of the secondary ignition circuit, tracked the spark motion as it was stretched by in-cylinder gas motion, and determined the resulting energy deposition to the gas. In concert with the existing kinetic solver in the CFD code, the resulting ignition and flame propagation processes were simulated. The model results have been validated against both imaging rig experiments of the spark in moving air and against engine experimental data. The model was able to replicate the key features of the spark and to capture the cyclic variability of high-dilution combustion when multiple engine cycles were simulated.

Development of High Compression-Ratio Stepped-Lip Piston using Machine Learning

Interaction between a diesel spray and piston plays a significant role in overall combustion and emissions performance in compression-ignition engines. It is essential to design the lip feature respective to spray targeting and the following charge motion for combustion systems that rely on spray-piston interaction strongly, such as a stepped-lip piston. This study used a numerical campaign using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to optimize a stepped-lip combustion system at a 22:1 compression ratio (CR) for both performance and emissions. This is a substantial step up in CR from the stock value of 17:1 for the same engine platform. A machine learning model was used to identify the best combination of features from a design space involving hundreds of potential piston designs and injector nozzle configurations. This study provides a discussion on the general combustion characteristics of the stepped-lip combustion system and the sensitivity of the design parameters.

Continuous Oil Consumption Measurement Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

This paper describes a new method for measuring oil consumption using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). LIBS focuses a high energy laser pulse on a sample to form a transient plasma. As the plasma cools, each element produces atomic emission lines which can be used to identify and quantify the elements present in the original sample. In this work, a LIBS system was used on simulated engine exhaust with a focus on quantifying the inorganic components (termed ash) of the particulate emissions. Because some of the metallic elements in the ash almost exclusively result from lube oil consumption, their concentrations can also be correlated to an oil consumption rate. Initial testing was performed using SwRI’s Exhaust Composition Transient Operation Laboratory®(ECTO-Lab®) burner system so that oil consumption and ash mass could be precisely controlled.

Demonstration of High Compression Ratio Combustion Systems for Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine with Improved Efficiency and Lower Emissions

Advanced diesel combustion systems continue to push the peak cylinder pressure limit of engines upward to allow high-efficiency combustion with high compression ratios (CR). The air-standard Otto and Diesel cycles indicate increased compression ratios lead to higher cycle efficiency. The study presented here describes the development and demonstration of a high-efficiency diesel combustion system. The study used both computational and experimental tools to develop the combustion system fully. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were carried out to evaluate combustion with two combustion systems at a compression ratio of 22:1 with a Wave piston design (based on the production Volvo Wave piston). Analysis of combustion performance and emissions were performed to confirm the improvements these piston designs offered relative to the baseline combustion system for the engine. Companion single-cylinder engine (SCE) experiments were performed to validate the simulation results.

Optimization of Surfactant and Catalyst Modified Urea-Water Solution Formulation for Deposit Reduction in SCR Aftertreatment Systems

Selective Catalytic Reduction is the primary method of NOX emission abatement in lean-burn internal combustion. This process requires the decomposition of a 32.5 wt. % urea-water solution (UWS) to provide ammonia as a reducing agent for NOX, but at temperatures < 250 °C the injection of UWS is limited due to the formation of harmful deposits within an aftertreatment system and decreased ammonia production. Previous work has sufficiently demonstrated that the addition of surfactant and a urea/isocyanic acid (HNCO) decomposition catalyst to UWS can significantly decrease deposit formation within an aftertreatment system. The objective of this work was to further optimize the modified UWS formulation by investigating different types and concentrations of surfactants and titanium-based urea/HNCO catalyst. Because there is a correlation between surface tension and water evaporation, it was theorized that minimizing the surface tension of UWS would result in decreased deposit formation.

Combination of Mixed Metal Oxides with Cu-Zeolite for Enhanced Soot Oxidation on an SCRoF

A push for more stringent emissions regulations has resulted in larger, increasingly complex aftertreatment solutions. In particular, oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and particulate matter (PM) have been controlled using two separate systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the catalyze diesel particulate filter (CDPF), or the functionality has been combined into a single device producing the SCR on filter (SCRoF). The SCRoF forgoes beneficial NO2 production present in the CDPF to avoid NH3 oxidation which occurs when using platinum group metals (PGM) for oxidation. In this study, mixed-metal oxides are shown to oxidize NO to NO2 without appreciable NH3 oxidation. This selectivity leads to enhanced performance when combined with a typical Cu-zeolite catalyst.

Advanced 1-D Ignition and Flame Growth Modeling for Ignition and Misfire Predictions in Spark Ignition Engines

Simulating high amounts of exhaust gas recirculation in spark ignited engines to predict combustion using the currently available CFD modeling approaches is a challenge and does not always give reasonable matches with experimental observations. One of the reasons for the mismatch lies with the secondary circuit treatment of the ignition coil and the resulting energy deposition or a complete lack of it thereof. An ignition modeling approach is developed in this work which predicts the energy transfer from the electrical circuit to the gases in the combustion chamber leading to flame kernel growth under high EGR and high gas flow velocity conditions. Secondary circuit sub-model includes secondary side of the coil, spark plug and spark gap. The sub-model calculates the delivered energy to the gas based on given circuit properties and total initial electrical energy.

Oil Consumption Pathway Impact on SCR-on-Filter Functional Performance and Lubricant Derived Ash Characteristics

SCR-on-filter, or SCRoF, is an emerging technology for different market segments and vehicle applications. The technology enables simultaneous particulate matter trapping and NOX reduction, and provides thermal management and aftertreatment packaging benefits. However, there is little information detailing the lubricant derived exposure effects on functional SCR performance. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of various oil consumption pathways on a light duty DOC and SCRoF aftertreatment system. This aftertreatment system was aged utilizing an engine test bench modified to enable increased oil consumption rates via three unique oil consumption pathways. The components were characterized for functional SCR performance, ash morphology, and ash deposition characteristics. This included utilizing techniques, such as SEM / EDS, to evaluate the ash structures and quantify the ash elemental composition.

Detailed Characterization of Particle Emissions from Advanced Internal Combustion Engines

Detailed characterization of particle emissions from three different engine technologies were performed, two of which were advanced technology engines. One of the engines was a nonroad Tier 4 Final emission regulation compliant 6.8L John Deere PSS 6068 diesel engine operated with its production calibration strategy. The other two engine platforms were advanced engine technologies whose controllers were developed by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). These included a dual fuel Navistar MaxxForce 13L natural gas-diesel engine and a Cummins ISX 15L diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was operated in two distinct modes, conventional dual fuel (CDF) mode and low temperature reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) mode. The Cummins ISX engine was operated using a “hot” or low EGR combustion strategy. For each engine technology, the test campaign involved steady-state test modes ranging from low speed low load to high speed high load conditions.

Detailed Characterization of Gaseous Emissions from Advanced Internal Combustion Engines

With the advancement of engine technologies and combustion strategies, aftertreatment architectures are expected to evolve as they continue to be the primary emissions mitigation hardware. Some of the engine approaches offer unique challenges and benefits that are not well understood beyond criteria pollutant emissions. As such, there continues to be a need to quantify engine emissions characteristics in pursuit of catalyst technology development and the use of advanced simulation tools. The following study discusses results from an extensive engine emissions assessment for current state-of-the-art technology and novel combustion regimes. The engines tested include a Tier 4 final compliant 6.8 L John Deere PSS 6068 diesel engine, a modified 15 L diesel engine, and a dual fuel 13 L natural gas-diesel engine. The dual fuel engine could operate in conventional positive ignition mode (CDF) or low temperature reactivity-controlled compression ignition mode (RCCI).

Investigation of Gasoline Compression Ignition in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to explore gasoline compression ignition (GCI) combustion. Results were validated with single-cylinder engine (SCE) experiments. It was shown that the CFD model captured experimental results well. Cylinder pressure, heat release and emissions from the CFD model were also used to analyze the performance of GCI combustion with a current heavy-duty diesel engine platform. This work also provides detailed analysis on in-cylinder combustion and emissions using CFD. It was found that multiple injection strategy can deliver desirable fuel stratification profile that benefits both engine and emissions performance. A wave contoured piston was compared with a stepped-lip type piston for both GCI and Diesel combustion scenarios on the same engine platform. Stepped-lip pistons offer an opportunity to use multiple injection strategies to overcome high UHC emissions of GCI combustion when compared to wave pistons.

Use of Nitric Acid to Control the NO2:NOX Ratio within the Exhaust Composition Transient Operation Laboratory Exhaust Stream

The Exhaust Composition Transient Operation LaboratoryTM (ECTO-LabTM) is a burner system developed at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) for simulation of IC engine exhaust. The current system design requires metering and combustion of nitromethane in conjunction with the primary fuel source as the means of NOX generation. While this method affords highly tunable NOX concentrations even over transient cycles, no method is currently in place for dictating the speciation of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) that constitute the NOX mixture. NOX generated through combustion of nitromethane is dominated by NO, and generally results in an NO2:NOX ratio of < 5 %. Generation of any appreciable quantities of NO2 is therefore dependent on an oxidation catalyst to oxidize a fraction of the NO to NO2.

Investigation into Low-Temperature Urea-Water Solution Decomposition by Addition of Titanium-Based Isocyanic Acid Hydrolysis Catalyst and Surfactant

Mitigation of urea deposit formation and improved ammonia production at low exhaust temperatures continues to be one of the most significant challenges for current generation selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment systems. Various technologies have been devised to alleviate these issues including: use of alternative reductant sources, and thermal treatment of the urea-water solution (UWS) pre-injection. The objective of this work was to expand the knowledge base of a potential third option, which entails chemical modification of UWS by addition of a titanium-based urea/isocyanic acid (HNCO) decomposition catalysts and/or surfactant to the fluid. Physical solid mixtures of urea with varying concentrations of ammonium titanyl oxalate (ATO), oxalic acid, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were generated, and the differences in NH3 and CO2 produced upon thermal decomposition were quantified.

Deposit Reduction in SCR Aftertreatment Systems by Addition of Ti-Based Coordination Complex to UWS

Formation of urea-derived deposits in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment systems continues to be problematic at temperatures at and below 215 °C. Several consequences of deposit formation include: NOx and NH3 slip, exhaust flow maldistribution, increased engine backpressure, and corrosion of aftertreatment components. Numerous methods have been developed to reduce deposit formation, but to date, there has been no solution for continuous low-temperature dosing of Urea-Water Solution (UWS). This manuscript presents a novel methodology for reducing low-temperature deposit formation in SCR aftertreatment systems. The methodology described herein involves incorporation and dissolution of an HNCO hydrolysis catalyst directly into the UWS. HNCO is a transient species formed by the thermolysis of urea upon injection of UWS into the aftertreatment system.

Fuel Reforming and Catalyst Deactivation Investigated in Real Exhaust Environment

Increased in-cylinder hydrogen levels have been shown to improve burn durations, combustion stability, HC emissions and knock resistance which can directly translate into enhanced engine efficiency. External fuel reformation can also be used to increase the hydrogen yield. During the High-Efficiency, Dilute Gasoline Engine (HEDGE) consortium at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), the potential of increased hydrogen production in a dedicated-exhaust gas recirculation (D-EGR) engine was evaluated exploiting the water gas shift (WGS) and steam reformation (SR) reactions. It was found that neither approach could produce sustained hydrogen enrichment in a real exhaust environment, even while utilizing a lean-rich switching regeneration strategy. Platinum group metal (PGM) and Ni WGS catalysts were tested with a focus on hydrogen production and catalyst durability.

Comparison of Accelerated Ash Loading Methods for Gasoline Particulate Filters

Recent legislation enacted for the European Union (EU) and the United States calls for a substantial reduction in particulate mass (and number in the EU) emissions from gasoline spark-ignited vehicles. The most prominent technology being evaluated to reduce particulate emissions from a gasoline vehicle is a wall flow filter known as a gasoline particulate filter (GPF). Similar in nature to a diesel particulate filter (DPF), the GPF will trap and store particulate emissions from the engine, and oxidize said particulate with frequent regeneration events. The GPF will also collect ash particles in the wall flow substrate, which are metallic components that cannot be oxidized into gaseous components. Due to high temperature operation and frequent regeneration of the GPF, the impact of ash on the GPF has the potential to be substantially different from the impact of ash on the DPF.
