Selection of the Best Emulsified Fuel Ratio Compared to Diesel Fuel

2007-09-01
2007-01-2138
The main objective of this paper is to identify the best ratio from the emulsified fuel ratios and compare with diesel fuel, based on its performance and emission characteristics. Water - in - Oil type emulsion method has been implemented to produce the emulsified fuel. Emulsified fuels have been prepared with different ratios of 50D: 50E (50 Diesel: 50 Ethanol - 100% Proof), 60D: 40E, 70D: 30E, 80D: 20E and 90D: 10E. From the investigation, it is observed that the emulsified fuel ratios have given the best result than diesel fuel. Also, 50D: 50E has given the best performance result than the other emulsified fuel ratios and diesel fuel. A single cylinder, 4- stroke, water cooled diesel engine has been used to conduct this experiment. It has been observed that there is reduction in smoke density (SD), particulate matter (PM) and exhaust gas temperature with an increase of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and brake thermal efficiency.

Comparing the Performance and Emission Characteristics of the Emulsified Fuel in DI Diesel Engine for Different Injection Pressures

Diesel engines are employed as the major propulsion power sources because of their simple, rigid structure and high fuel economy. It is expected that diesel engines will be widely used in the foreseeable future. However, the increase in the use of diesel engines causes the shortage of fossil fuel and results in a greater degree of pollution. To regulate the above, identifying an alternate fuel to the diesel engine with less pollution is essential. Ethanol - diesel emulsion is one of the methods, which is used for the preparation of the alternate fuel to the diesel engine. Experimental investigations have been carried out for comparing the performance of the diesel fuel with different ratios 50D: 50E (50% diesel No:2: 50 % ethanol -100 % proof) and 60D: 40E emulsified fuels. In the next phase, experiments have been conducted for the selected emulsified fuel ratio 50D: 50E for different high injection pressures (Valve Opening Pressure -VOP) and the results are compared.

In this present work, experiment has been conducted in phases I, II categories. In phase I, 50D: 50E (50 Diesel: 50 Ethanol - 100% Proof), 60D: 40E and 70D: 30E have been prepared under water - in - oil type emulsion preparation method and the results have been compared with neat diesel fuel. After identifying the best fuel ratio, it passes to phase - II. In phase - II, the selected fuel has been sprayed in to different fuel injection nozzles of 18°, 20°, 23° and 24°. After that the performance and emission tests have been carried out. The out come result shows better performance and less emission have been given by the fuel 50D: 50E at 24°. Further the ignition delay, the maximum heat release and peak combustion pressure tests are conducted. Also P - θ diagram is drawn between crank angle Vs cylinder pressure. The maximum value is attained by the emulsified fuel ratio 50D: 50E at 24° fuel injection angle.
