Precise Dummy Head Trajectories in Crash Tests based on Fusion of Optical and Electrical Data: Influence of Sensor Errors and Initial Values

Precise three-dimensional dummy head trajectories during crash tests are very important for vehicle safety development. To determine precise trajectories with a standard deviation of approximately 5 millimeters, three-dimensional video analysis is an approved method. Therefore the tracked body is to be seen on at least two cameras during the whole crash term, which is often not given (e.g. head dips into the airbag). This non-continuity problem of video analysis is surmounted by numerical integration of differential un-interrupted electrical rotation and acceleration sensor signals mounted into the tracked body. Problems of this approach are unknown sensor calibration errors and unknown initial conditions, which result in trajectory deviations above 10 centimeters.

Contemporary Crash Analysis as a Building Block in Holistic Multidisciplinary Structural Analysis

The trend in the previous years showed that an ideal product is not obtained as a sum of development results of several separated disciplines but rather as a result of a holistic multidisciplinary CAE approach. In the course of the whole component development process it is necessary to consider all functions of an individual component equivalent to their importance in the system as a whole, in order to achieve both a technical and a financial optimum. The predictability and the accuracy of an individual computational method have to be regarded against the background of the entire simulation process. A continuative CAE-standard and a harmonious interaction between the different computational disciplines promise more success than focusing specifically on individual topics and thereby neglecting the “bigger picture”. This awareness provided the basis for a decision to change the entire crash simulation software to ABAQUS.

Assessment of Side Impact Simulation Using ABAQUS/Explicit

In order to protect occupants from the risk of serious injury in event of side impact, passenger vehicles are designed to fulfil specific legislative and consumer impact test requirements. These are generally different for each of the major markets of the world. The tests use different configurations and percentile dummies (anthropomorphic test devices). Aside from the problem of finding an optimal design, the reliable evaluation of the robustness, i.e. the sensitivity of unavoidable scatter of design variables due to the structural response, is becoming increasingly important. For this purpose simulation is a well established tool in the development process in the automotive industry. The integration of FE-dummies and restraint systems in side impact simulations enables the study of the effect of dummy loading. ABAQUS/Explicit is a promising new software package for gaining more accuracy in crashworthiness and occupant protection simulations.

A Stochastic Virtual Testing Approach in Vehicle Passive Safety Design: Effect of Scatter on Injury Response

Virtual testing has grown to be an efficient tool in vehicle passive safety design. Most simulations currently are deterministic. Since the responses observed in real-life and standardized tests are greatly affected by scatter, a stochastic approach should be adopted in order to improve the predictability of the numerical responses with respect to the experimental data. In addition, an objective judgement of the performance of numerical models with respect to experimental data is necessary in order to improve the reliability of virtual testing. In the European VITES & ADVANCE project the software tool Adviser was developed in order to fulfil these two requirements. With Adviser, stochastic simulations can be performed and the quality of the numerical responses with respect to the experimental can be objectively rated using pre-defined and user-defined objective correlation criteria. The software Adviser was used to develop a stochastic HybridIII 50th% Madymo numerical model.

The new generation of BMW child seat and occupant detection system SBE2

A new generation of BMW child seat and occupant detection system SBE2 for a smart airbag system is described. The SBE2 system consists of two subsystems: OC (occupant classification) and FDS (field detection system). The OC system is a force-sensitive sensor array that measures a pressure profile. The FDS system detects child seat and occupant according to the change of electrical field generated by four capacitive plates. Combining the signals from both subsystems, the BMW SBE2 system can distinguish fully automatically between a child seat and a person.

A New Method to Assess the Summer Suitability of Car Seats

A new method has been designed to examine car seats by technical means only, whether they fit summer conditions or not. Test procedures start with the application of a carefully wetted cloth onto the seat to be examined. The test area is then covered by a temperature controlled, electrically heated solid body bloc. This simulates the body temperature and the seat pressure of a real seat user. During test periods of standard three hours, temperature and humidity is measured beneath the test device and in the surrounding air. As an effect of the water impulse the humidity increases under the body bloc. It has been proved that good summer suitability of a car seat is characterised by moderate amount and moderate duration of increased humidity readings. Poor suitability results in higher amount and longer duration of raised humidity. The method is shown to be useful to examine full scale car seats, child safety seats and single design characteristics of car seats as well.

Generally, safety belt effectiveness is spoken of as a single value which is applied to all types of accidents and injuries. This study analyzes the makeup of safety belt effectiveness and compares the overall effectiveness to the effectiveness for different levels of injury, different areas of the body and for different types of accidents at different speeds. These comparisons show the wide range of effectiveness of safety belts and the relative effectiveness for different specific situations.

Based an extensive preparatory work and analyses, suggestions have been drawn up with regard to solutions for front door frames in the following regions:- door hinge mountings, seat belt anchorage mountings of B pillars, cross sections for the top of A pillars. At the same time as the design work, FEM calculations should be carried out to ensure optimization of the concepts. Economy reasons and experiences in production runs point towards a very strong fibre glass-reinforced door frames manufacutred in the SMC procress. The complete door frame is examined in comparison with geometrically similar sheet metal parts on a test frame and in the vehicle.
