Tackling Limited Labeled Field Data Challenges for State of Health Estimation of Lithium-Ion Batteries by Advanced Semi-Supervised Regression

Accurate estimation of battery state of health (SOH) has become indispensable in ensuring the predictive maintenance and safety of electric vehicles (EVs). While supervised machine learning excels in laboratory settings with adequate SOH labels, field-based SOH data collection for supervised learning is hindered by EVs' complex conditions and prohibitive data collection costs. To overcome this challenge, a battery SOH estimation method based on semi-supervised regression is proposed and validated using field data in this paper. Initially, the Ampere integral formula is employed to calculate SOH labels from charging data, and the error of labeled SOH is reduced by the open-circuit voltage correction strategy. The calculation error of the SOH label is confirmed to be less than 1.2%, as validated by the full-charge test of the battery packs.

Intersection Signal Control Based on Speed Guidance and Reinforcement Learning

As a crucial part of the intelligent transportation system, traffic signal control will realize the boundary control of the traffic area, it will also lead to delays and excessive fuel consumption when the vehicle is driving at the intersection. To tackle this challenge, this research provides an optimized control framework based on reinforcement learning method and speed guidance strategy for the connected vehicle network. Prior to entering an intersection, vehicles are focused on in a specific speed guidance area, and important factors like uniform speed, acceleration, deceleration, and parking are optimized. Conclusion, derived from deep reinforcement learning algorithm, the summation of the length of the vehicle’s queue in front of the signal light and the sum of the number of brakes are used as the reward function, and the vehicle information at the intersection is collected in real time through the road detector on the road network.

Load Simulation of the Impact Road under Durability and Misuse Conditions

Road load data is an essential input to evaluate vehicle durability and strength performances. Typically, load case of pothole impact constitutes the major part in the development of structural durability. Meanwhile, misuse conditions like driving over a curb are also indispensable scenarios to complement impact strength of vehicle structures. This paper presents a methodology of establishing Multi-body Dynamics (MBD) full vehicle model in Adams/Car to acquire the road load data for use in durability and strength analysis. Furthermore, load level between durability and misuse conditions of the same Impact road was also investigated to explore the impact due to different driving maneuvers.

A New Safety-Oriented Multi-State Joint Estimation Framework for High-Power Electric Flying Car Batteries

Accurate and robust knowledge of battery internal states and parameters is a prerequisite for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of electric flying cars. Battery states such as state of charge (SOC), state of temperature (SOT), and state of power (SOP) are of particular interest for urban air mobility (UAM) applications. This article proposes a new safety-oriented multi-state estimation framework for collaboratively updating the SOC, SOT, and SOP of lithium-ion batteries under typical UAM mission profiles that explicitly incorporates the underlying interplay among these three states. Specifically, the SOC estimation is performed by combining an adaptive extended Kalman filter with a timely calibrated battery electrical model, and the key temperature information, including the volume-averaged temperature, highest temperature, and maximum temperature difference, is estimated using an adaptive Kalman filter based on a simplified 2-D spatially-resolved thermal model.

Research on Regenerative Braking Control Strategy under High Charge State Using Prescribed Performance Prediction Control

To reduce the energy consumption level of electric vehicles, the working range of the regenerative braking system will gradually expand to the high state of charge of the battery. The time delay in the control signal transmission path of the high state of charge regenerative braking control process will affect the regenerative braking. At the same time, regenerative braking under a high state of charge puts forward higher requirements for the control accuracy of regenerative current. In the research of this paper, the motor model, battery model, and vehicle dynamics model are firstly established by using MATLAB/Simulink, and the dynamic relationship between regenerative current and regenerative braking torque is analyzed at the same time. Considering the system time delay, this paper proposes a high-charge regenerative braking control strategy (SPPC) that combines Smith prediction and prescribed performance control.

Hierarchical Eco-Driving Control of Connected Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Dynamic Traffic Flow Prediction

Due to traffic congestion and environmental pollution, connected automated vehicle (CAV) technologies based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2I) have gained increasing attention from both academia and industry. Connected hybrid electric vehicles (CHEVs) offer great opportunities to reduce vehicular operating costs and emissions. However, in complex traffic scenarios, high-quality real-time energy management of CHEVs remains a technical challenge. To address the challenge, this paper proposes a hierarchical eco-driving strategy that consists of speed planning and energy management layers. At the upper layer, by leveraging the real-time traffic data provided by vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, dynamic traffic constraints are predicted by the traffic flow predictor developed based on the Hankel dynamic mode decomposition algorithm (H-DMD).

Hierarchical Vehicle Active Collision Avoidance Based on Potential Field Method

In this paper, a closed loop path planning and tracking control approach of collision avoidance for autonomous vehicle is proposed. The two-level model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for the path planning and tracking. The upper-level MPC is designed based on the simple vehicle kinematic model to calculate the collision-free trajectory and the potential field method is adopted to evaluate the collision risk and generate the cost function of the optimization problem. The lower-level MPC is the trajectory-tracking controller based on the vehicle dynamics model that calculates the desired control inputs. Finally the control inputs are distributed to steering wheel angle and motor torque via optimal control vectoring algorithm. Test cases are established on the Simulink/CarSim platform to evaluate the performance of the controller.

A Dynamic Trajectory Planning for Automatic Vehicles Based on Improved Discrete Optimization Method

The dynamic trajectory planning problem for automatic vehicles in complex traffic scenarios is investigated in this paper. A hierarchical motion planning framework is developed to complete the complex planning task. An improved dangerous potential field in the curvilinear coordinate system is constructed to describe the collision risk of automatic vehicles accurately instead of the discrete Gaussian convolution algorithm. At the same time, the driving comfort is also considered in order to generate an optimal, smooth, collision-free and feasible path in dynamics. The optimal path can be mapped into the Cartesian coordinate system simply and conveniently. Furthermore, a velocity profile considering practical vehicle dynamics is also presented to improve the safety and the comfort in driving. The effectiveness of the proposed dynamic trajectory planning is verified by numerical simulation for several typical traffic scenarios.

According to driving scenarios, intelligent vehicle is mainly applied on urban driving, highway driving and close zone driving, etc. As one of the most valuable developments, automated highway driving has great progress. This paper focuses on automated highway driving decision, and considering decision efficiency and feasibility, a hierarchical motion planning algorithm based on dynamic programming was proposed, and simultaneously, road coordinate transformation methods were developed to deal with complex road conditions. At first, all transportation user states are transformed into straight road coordinate to simplify modeling and planning, then a set of candidate paths with Bezier form was developed and with the help of obstacles motion prediction, the feasible target paths with collision-free were remains, and via comparing vehicle performance for feasible path, the optimal driving trajectory was generated.

Research on Factors to Influence Coasting Resistance for Electric Vehicles

The research on coasting resistance is vital to electric vehicles, since the smaller the coasting resistance, the longer the coast-down distance. Vehicle coast resistance consists of rolling resistance, vehicle inner resistance and the aerodynamic drag. The vehicle inner resistance is mainly caused by driveline’s friction loss and oil splash loss. The rolling resistance is decided by tire resistance coefficient, which is influenced by tires and road conditions. And the aerodynamic drag is affected by vehicle’s shape and air. In this paper, four factors including tire pressure, road surface condition, atmosphere temperature, and recirculation on or off are examined. Experimental tests have been conducted on three different vehicles: one subcompact sedan, one compact sedan and one subcompact SUV. Then experimental results have been imported to simulation model to investigate the corresponding influence on NEDC range.

The study of vehicle coupling state estimation accuracy especially in observer-based vehicle chassis control for improving road handling and ride comfort is a challenging task for vehicle industry under various driving conditions. Due to a large amount of life safety arising from vehicle roll behavior, how to precisely acquire vehicle roll state and rapidly provide for the vehicle control system are of great concern. Simultaneously, uncertainty is unavoidable for various aspects of a vehicle system, e.g., varying sprung mass, moment of inertia and position of the center of gravity. To deal with the above issues, a novel dual observer approach, which combines adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter (AUKF) and Takagi-Sugeno (T-S), is proposed in this paper. A full-car nonlinear model is first established to describe vehicle lateral and vertical coupling roll behavior under various road excitation.

Response Decoupling Method in Mount Design with Emphasis on Transient Load Conditions

This research examined the focused design, elastic design, energy decoupling, and torque roll axis (TRA) decoupling methods for mount optimization design. Requiring some assumptions, these methods are invalid for some load conditions and constraints. The linearity assumption is advantageous and simplifies both design and optimization analysis, facilitating engineering applications. However, the linearity is rarely seen in real-world applications, and there is no practical method to directly measure the reaction forces in the three locally orthogonal directions, preventing validation of existing methods by experimental results. For nonlinear system identification, there are additional challenges such as unobservable internal variables and the uncertainty of measured data.

A full-car nonlinear Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is first created to describe vehicle lateral and vertical coupling dynamics.

Road Classification Based on System Response with Consideration of Tire Enveloping

This paper presents a road classifier based on the system response with consideration of the tire enveloping. The aim is to provide an easily applicable yet accurate road classification approach for automotive engineers. For this purpose, tire enveloping effect is firstly modeled based on the flexible roller contact (FRC) theory, then transfer functions between road input and commonly used suspension responses i.e. the sprung mass acceleration, unsprung mass acceleration, and rattle space, are calculated for a quarter vehicle model. The influence of parameter variations, vehicle velocity, and measurement noise on transfer functions are comprehensively analyzed to derive the most suitable system response thereafter. In addition, this paper proposes a vehicle speed correction mechanism to further improve the classification accuracy under complex driving conditions.

An Indirect Occupancy Detection and Occupant Counting System Using Motion Sensors

This paper proposes a low-cost but indirect method for occupancy detection and occupant counting purpose in current and future automotive systems. It can serve as either a way to determine the number of occupants riding inside a car or a way to complement the other devices in determining the occupancy. The proposed method is useful for various mobility applications including car rental, fleet management, taxi, car sharing, occupancy in autonomous vehicles, etc. It utilizes existing on-board motion sensor measurements, such as those used in the vehicle stability control function, together with door open and closed status. The vehicle’s motion signature in response to an occupant’s boarding and alighting is first extracted from the motion sensors that measure the responses of the vehicle body. Then the weights of the occupants are estimated by fitting the vehicle responses with a transient vehicle dynamics model.

G-G Diagram Generation Based on Phase Plane Method and Experimental Validation for FSAE Race Car

In order to discuss the limit handling performance of a FSAE race car, a method to generate the G-G diagram was proposed based on phase plane concept. The simulated G-G diagram was validated by experiments with an electric FSAE race car. In section 1, a nonlinear 7 DOFs dynamic model of a certain electric FSAE race car was built. The tire mechanical properties were described by Magic Formula, and the tire test data was provided by FSAE TTC. In section 2, firstly the steady-state yaw rate response was discussed in different vehicle speed and lateral acceleration based on the simulations. Then the method to generate the G-G diagram based on phase plane concept was proposed, and the simulated G-G diagram of a certain FSAE race car was obtained. In section 3, the testbed FSAE race car was described, including the important apparatuses used in the experiments. Based on the race track experiment, the G-G diagram of the race car was obtained.

Development of Effective Bicycle Model for Wide Ranges of Vehicle Operations

This paper proposes an effective nonlinear bicycle model including longitudinal, lateral, and yaw motions of a vehicle. This bicycle model uses a simplified piece-wise linear tire model and tire force tuning algorithm to produce closely matching vehicle trajectory compared to real vehicle for wide vehicle operation ranges. A simplified piece-wise tire model that well represents nonlinear tire forces was developed. The key parameters of this model can be chosen from measured tire forces. For the effects of dynamic load transfer due to sharp vehicle maneuvers, a tire force tuning algorithm that dynamically adjusts tire forces of the bicycle model based on measured vehicle lateral acceleration is proposed. Responses of the proposed bicycle model have been compared with commercial vehicle dynamics model (CarSim) through simulation in various vehicle maneuvers (ramp steer, sine-with-dwell).

A Study of the Adaptability of Three Way Catalytic Converter under Hydrogen-Gasoline Dual-Fuel Alternate Working Mode

Nowadays, the world is facing severe energy crisis and environment problems. Development of hydrogen fuel vehicles is one of the best ways to solve these problems. Due to the difficulties of infrastructures, such as the hydrogen transport and storage, hydrogen fuel vehicles have not been widely used yet. As a result, Hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel vehicle is a solution as a compromise. In this paper, three way catalytic converter (TWC) was used to reduce emissions of hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel vehicles. On wide open throttle and load characteristics, the conversion efficiency of TWC in gasoline engine was measured. Then the TWC was connected to a hydrogen internal combustion engine. After switching the hydrogen and gasoline working mode, emission data was measured. Experiment results show that the efficiency of a traditional TWC can be maintained above 85%., while it works in a hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel alternative working mode.

A Methodology to Integrate a Nonlinear Shock Absorber Dynamics into a Vehicle Model for System Identification

High fidelity mathematical vehicle models that can accurately capture the dynamics of car suspension system are critical in vehicle dynamics studies. System identification techniques can be employed to determine model type, order and parameters. Such techniques are well developed and usually used on linear models. Unfortunately, shock absorbers have nonlinear characteristics that are non-negligible, especially with regard the vehicle's vertical dynamics. In order to effectively employ system identification techniques on a vehicle, a nonlinear mathematical shock absorber model must be developed and then coupled to the linear vehicle model. Such an approach addresses the nonlinear nature of the shock absorber for system identification purposes. This paper presents an approach to integrate the nonlinear shock absorber model into the vehicle model for system identification.
