Low-Cost Open-Source Data Acquisition for High-Speed Cylinder Pressure Measurement with Arduino

In-cylinder pressure measurement is an important tool in internal combustion engine research and development for combustion, cycle performance, and knock analysis in spark-ignition engines. In a typical laboratory setup, a sub crank angle resolved (typically between 0.1o and 0.5o) optical encoder is installed on the engine crankshaft, and a piezoelectric pressure transducer is installed in the engine cylinder. The charge signal produced by the transducer due to changes in cylinder pressure during the engine cycle is converted to voltage by a charge amplifier, and this analog voltage is read by a high-speed data acquisition (DAQ) system at each encoder trigger pulse. The high speed of engine operation and the need to collect hundreds of engine cycles for appropriate cycle-averaging requires significant processor speed and memory, making typical data acquisition systems very expensive.

Extended Deep Learning Model to Predict the Electric Vehicle Motor Operating Point

The transition from combustion engines to electric propulsion is accelerating in every coordinate of the globe. The engineers had strived hard to augment the engine performance for more than eight decades, and a similar challenge had emerged again for electric vehicles. To analyze the performance of the engine, the vector engine operating point (EOP) is defined, which is common industry practice, and the performance vector electric vehicle motor operating point (EVMOP) is not explored in the existing literature. In an analogous sense, electric vehicles are embedded with three primary components, e.g., Battery, Inverter, Motor, and in this article, the EVMOP is defined using the parameters [motor torque, motor speed, motor current]. As a second aspect of this research, deep learning models are developed to predict the EVMOP by mapping the parameters representing the dynamic state of the system in real-time.

Optimal Control Co-Design of a Parallel Electric-Hydraulic Hybrid Vehicle

This paper presents an optimal control co-design framework of a parallel electric-hydraulic hybrid powertrain specifically tailored for heavy-duty vehicles. A pure electric powertrain, comprising a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a highly efficient electric motor, and a single or double-speed gearbox, has garnered significant attention in the automotive sector due to the increasing demand for clean and efficient mobility. However, the state-of-the-art has demonstrated limited capabilities and has struggled to meet the design requirements of heavy-duty vehicles with high power demands, such as a class 8 semi-trailer truck. This is especially evident in terms of a driving range on one battery charge, battery charging time, and load-carrying capacity. These challenges primarily stem from the low power density of lithium-ion batteries and the low energy conversion efficiency of electric motors at low speeds.

Spark ignition engines utilize catalytic converters to reform harmful exhaust gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen into less harmful products. Aftertreatment devices require the use of expensive catalytic metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Meanwhile, tightening automotive emissions regulations globally necessitate the development of high-performance exhaust gas catalysts. So, automotive manufactures must balance maximizing catalyst performance while minimizing production costs. There are thousands of different recipes for catalytic converters, with each having a different effect on the various catalytic chemical reactions which impact the resultant tailpipe gas composition. In the development of catalytic converters, simulation models are often used to reduce the need for physical parts and testing, thus saving significant time and money.

Hierarchical Decentralized Model Predictive Control for Multi-Stack Fuel Cell Vehicles Using Driving Cycle Data

The energy management strategy, commonly known as the EMS, is an essential component of fuel cell cars (FCVs). The majority of current research is concentrated on centralized emergency management systems (Cen-EMSs), but it does not provide sufficient flexibility (plug-and-play) or robustness. Regarding this matter, a hierarchical decentralized energy management system (Dec-EMS) that is based on a model predictive control (MPC) technique is offered for a modular FCV powertrain that is comprised of two parallel proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) and an energy storage system. Gain scheduling makes the proposed Dec-EMS controller more effective in terms of its performance. The hierarchical decentralized control approach is assessed within the framework of a driving scenario that is representative of real-world conditions. According to the numerical result, the decentralized emergency management system (Dec-EMS) proposal provides superior performance than the centralized approach.

Intersection Signal Control Based on Speed Guidance and Reinforcement Learning

As a crucial part of the intelligent transportation system, traffic signal control will realize the boundary control of the traffic area, it will also lead to delays and excessive fuel consumption when the vehicle is driving at the intersection. To tackle this challenge, this research provides an optimized control framework based on reinforcement learning method and speed guidance strategy for the connected vehicle network. Prior to entering an intersection, vehicles are focused on in a specific speed guidance area, and important factors like uniform speed, acceleration, deceleration, and parking are optimized. Conclusion, derived from deep reinforcement learning algorithm, the summation of the length of the vehicle’s queue in front of the signal light and the sum of the number of brakes are used as the reward function, and the vehicle information at the intersection is collected in real time through the road detector on the road network.

The Effect of Exhaust Emission Conditions and Coolant Temperature on the Composition of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Deposits

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolers are widely used on diesel engines to reduce in-cylinder NOx formation. A common problem is the accumulation of a fouling layer inside the heat exchanger, mainly due to thermophoresis that leads to deposition of particulate matter (PM), and condensation of hydrocarbons (HC) from the diesel exhaust. From a recent investigation of deposits from field samples of EGR coolers, it was confirmed that the densities of their deposits were much higher than reported in previous studies. In this study, the experiments were conducted in order to verify hypotheses about deposit growth, especially densification. An experimental set up which included a custom-made shell and tube type heat exchanger with six surrogate tubes was designed to control flow rate independently, and was installed on a 1.9 L L-4 common rail turbo diesel engine.

Minimizing Steady-State Testing Time in an Engine Dynamometer Laboratory

In the automotive industry, performing steady-state tests on an internal combustion engine can be a time consuming and costly process, but it is necessary to ensure the engine meets performance and emissions criteria set by the manufacturer and regulatory agencies. Any measures that can reduce the amount of time required to complete these testing campaigns provides significant benefits to manufacturers. The purpose of this work is then to develop a systematic approach to minimize the time required to conduct a steady-state engine test campaign using a Savitsky-Golay filter to calculate measured signal gradients for continuous steady-state detection. Experiments were conducted on an Armfield CM11-MKII Gasoline Engine test bench equipped with a 1.2L 3-cylinder Volkswagen EA111 R3 engine. The test bench utilizes throttle position control and an eddy current dynamometer braking system with automatic PID control of engine speed.

A Standard Set of Courses to Assess the Quality of Driving Off-Road Combat Vehicles

Making manned and remotely-controlled wheeled and tracked vehicles easier to drive, especially off-road, is of great interest to the U.S. Army. If vehicles are easier to drive (especially closed hatch) or if they are driven autonomously, then drivers could perform additional tasks (e.g., operating weapons or communication systems), leading to reduced crew sizes. Further, poorly driven vehicles are more likely to get stuck, roll over, or encounter mines or improvised explosive devices, whereby the vehicle can no longer perform its mission and crew member safety is jeopardized. HMI technology and systems to support human drivers (e.g., autonomous driving systems, in-vehicle monitors or head-mounted displays, various control devices (including game controllers), navigation and route-planning systems) need to be evaluated, which traditionally occurs in mission-specific (and incomparable) evaluations.

An In-Cylinder Imaging Study of Pre-chamber Spark-Plug Flame Development in a Single-Cylinder Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Prior work in the literature have shown that pre-chamber spark plug technologies can provide remarkable improvements in engine performance. In this work, three passively fueled pre-chamber spark plugs with different pre-chamber geometries were investigated using in-cylinder high-speed imaging of spectral emission in the visible wavelength region in a single-cylinder direct-injection spark-ignition gasoline engine. The effects of the pre-chamber spark plugs on flame development were analyzed by comparing the flame progress between the pre-chamber spark plugs and with the results from a conventional spark plug. The engine was operated at fixed conditions (relevant to federal test procedures) with a constant speed of 1500 revolutions per minute with a coolant temperature of 90 oC and stoichiometric fuel-to-air ratio. The in-cylinder images were captured with a color high-speed camera through an optical insert in the piston crown.

Hierarchical Eco-Driving Control of Connected Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Dynamic Traffic Flow Prediction

Due to traffic congestion and environmental pollution, connected automated vehicle (CAV) technologies based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2I) have gained increasing attention from both academia and industry. Connected hybrid electric vehicles (CHEVs) offer great opportunities to reduce vehicular operating costs and emissions. However, in complex traffic scenarios, high-quality real-time energy management of CHEVs remains a technical challenge. To address the challenge, this paper proposes a hierarchical eco-driving strategy that consists of speed planning and energy management layers. At the upper layer, by leveraging the real-time traffic data provided by vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, dynamic traffic constraints are predicted by the traffic flow predictor developed based on the Hankel dynamic mode decomposition algorithm (H-DMD).

Uncertainty Quantification of Wet Clutch Actuator Behaviors in P2 Hybrid Engine Start Process

Advanced features in automotive systems often necessitate the management of complex interactions between subsystems. Existing control strategies are designed for certain levels of robustness, however their performance can unexpectedly deteriorate in the presence of significant uncertainties, resulting in undesirable system behaviors. This limitation is further amplified in systems with complex nonlinear dynamics. Hydro-mechanical clutch actuators are among those systems whose behaviors are highly sensitive to variations in subsystem characteristics and operating environments. In a P2 hybrid propulsion system, a wet clutch is utilized for cranking the engine during an EV-HEV mode switching event. It is critical that the hydro-mechanical clutch actuator is stroked as quickly and as consistently as possible despite the existence of uncertainties. Thus, the quantification of uncertainties on clutch actuator behaviors is important for enabling smooth EV-HEV transitions.

Mobility in the automotive and transportation sectors has been experiencing a period of unprecedented evolution. A growing need for efficient, clean and safe mobility has increased momentum toward sustainable technologies in these sectors. Toward this end, battery electric vehicles have drawn keen interest and their market share is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, especially in light-duty applications such as passenger cars. Although the battery electric vehicles feature high performance and zero tailpipe emission characteristics, economic and technical issues such as battery cost, driving range, recharging time and infrastructure remain main hurdles that need to be fully addressed. In particular, the low power density of the battery limits its broad adoption in heavy-duty applications such as class 8 semi-trailer trucks due to the required size and weight of the battery and electric motor.

Development of a Reduced TPRF-E (Heptane/Isooctane/Toluene/Ethanol) Gasoline Surrogate Model for Computational Fluid Dynamic Applications in Engine Combustion and Sprays

Investigating combustion characteristics of oxygenated gasoline and gasoline blended ethanol is a subject of recent interest. The non-linearity in the interaction of fuel components in the oxygenated gasoline can be studied by developing chemical kinetics of relevant surrogate of fewer components. This work proposes a new reduced four-component (isooctane, heptane, toluene, and ethanol) oxygenated gasoline surrogate mechanism consisting of 67 species and 325 reactions, applicable for dynamic CFD applications in engine combustion and sprays. The model introduces the addition of eight C1-C3 species into the previous model (Li et al; 2019) followed by extensive tuning of reaction rate constants of C7 - C8 chemistry. The current mechanism delivers excellent prediction capabilities in comprehensive combustion applications with an improved performance in lean conditions.

Predictive Energy Management for Dual Motor-Driven Electric Vehicles

Developing pure electric powertrains have become an important way to reduce reliance on crude oil in recent years. This paper concerns energy management of dual motor-driven electric vehicles. In order to obtain a predictive energy management strategy with good performance in computation and energy efficiency, we propose a hybrid algorithm that combines model predictive control (MPC) and convex programming to minimize electrical energy use in real time control. First, few changes are occurred in original component models in order to convert the original optimal control problem into convex programming problem. Then convex optimization algorithm is used in the prediction horizon to optimize torque allocation between two electric motors with different size. To verify the effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm, a real city driving cycle is simulated. Furthermore, different predictive horizons are performed to illustrate the robustness and time efficiency of the proposed method.

CAE Correlation of Sealing Pressure of a Press-in-Place Gasket

The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasket bolted joint. A sensor pad in combination with TEKSCAN equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various engine loading conditions. Then, the test results were compared with simulated results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it was found that gasket sealing pressure of test data and CAE data shows good correlations in all internal pressure cases when the bolt load was 500 N.

Nonlinear System Identification of Variable Oil Pump for Model-Based Controls and Diagnostics

This paper presents nonlinear system identification of a variable oil pump for model-based controls and diagnostics of advanced internal combustion engines. The variable oil pump offers great benefits over the conventional fixed displacement oil pump in terms of fuel efficiency and functional optimality. However, to fully benefit from the variable oil pump, an accurate mathematical model that describes its dynamic behavior is foundational to develop an accurate and robust oil pressure control and diagnostic. Toward this end, Hammerstein and Wiener models that consist of a nonlinear static block followed by a linear dynamic block and a linear dynamic block followed by a nonlinear static block, respectively are developed. Under different operating conditions (oil temperature and engine speed), the oil pressure (output) is measured with the multilevel duty cycle (input) of the flow control valve.

Defining the Boundary Conditions of the CFR Engine under MON Conditions, and Evaluating Chemical Kinetic Predictions at RON and MON for PRFs

Expanding upon the authors’ previous work which utilized a GT-Power model of the Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) engine under Research Octane Number (RON) conditions, this work defines the boundary conditions of the CFR engine under Motored Octane Number (MON) test conditions. The GT-Power model was validated against experimental CFR engine data for primary reference fuel (PRF) blends between 60 and 100 under standard MON conditions, defining the full range of interest of MON for gasoline-type fuels. The CFR engine model utilizes a predictive turbulent flame propagation sub-model, and a chemical kinetic solver for the end-gas chemistry. The validation was performed simultaneously for thermodynamic and chemical kinetic parameters to match in-cylinder pressure conditions, burn rate, and knock point prediction with experimental data, requiring only minor modifications to the flame propagation model from previous model iterations.

Prediction of Spark Timing to Achieve a Specified Torque Profile in Spark-Ignition Engines Using Time-Dependent Metamodeling

The internal combustion engine is a source of unwanted vibration on the vehicle body. The unwanted vibration comes from forces on the engine mounts which depend on the engine torque during a transient maneuver. In particular, during a tip-in or a tip-out maneuver, different torque profiles result in different magnitudes of vibration. A desired engine torque shape can be thus obtained to minimize the unwanted vibration. The desired torque shape can be achieved by controlling a set of engine calibration parameters. This paper provides a methodology to determine the spark timing profile to achieve a desired engine torque profile during a tip-out maneuver. The spark timing profiles are described by a third-order polynomial as a function of time. A set of coefficients to define a third-order polynomial (design sites) are first generated using design of experiments (DOE).
