Time-Domain Explicit Dynamic CAE Simulation for Brake Squeal

Disc brake squeal is always a challenging multidisciplinary problem in vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) that has been extensively researched. Theoretical analysis has been done to understand the mechanism of disc brake squeal due to small disturbances. Most studies have used linear modal approaches for the harmonic vibration of large models. However, time-domain approaches have been limited, as they are restricted to specific friction models and vibration patterns and are computationally expensive. This research aims to use a time-domain approach to improve the modeling of brake squeal, as it is a dynamic instability issue with a time-dependent friction force. The time-domain approach has been successfully demonstrated through examples and data.

Compact Normalized Description of Vehicle Traction Power for Simple Fuel Consumption Modeling

This is an extension of simple fuel consumption modeling toward HEV. Previous work showed that in urban driving the overhead of running an ICEV engine can use as much fuel as the traction work. The bidirectional character and high efficiency of electric motors enables HEVs to run as a BEV at negative and low traction powers, with no net input from the small battery. The ICE provides the net work at higher traction powers where it is most efficient. Whereas the network reduction is the total negative work times the system round-trip efficiency, the reduction in engine running time requires knowledge of the distribution of traction power levels. The traction power histogram, and the work histogram derived from it, provide the required drive cycle description. The traction power is normalized by vehicle mass, so that the drive trace component becomes invariant, and the road load component nearly invariant to vehicle mass.

Several factors stimulate the development of new materials in the industry. From specific physical-chemical characteristics to strategic market advantages, technology companies seek to diversify their raw materials. In the automotive sector, the current trend of electrification in vehicles and the increase of government and market demand for reducing the emission of greenhouse gases makes lighter materials more and more necessary. As electric vehicles use heavy batteries, the vehicle weight is directly related to its power demand and level of autonomy. The same applies to internal combustion vehicles where the vehicle weight directly impacts fuel consumption and emissions. In this context, there is a lot of research on special alloys and composites to replace traditional materials. Aluminum is a good alternative to steel due to its density which is almost five times smaller while that material still has good mechanical properties and has better impact absorption capability.

Electric Power Assisted Steering System in Vehicle Level CAE Simulation

The steering system is to provide the driver with the possibility of lateral vehicle guidance, i.e. to influence the lateral dynamics of the vehicle; moreover, it is crucial to promptly translate the steering input to have the vehicle in high-quality directional stability. An electrical power assisted steering (EPAS) system is the sophisticated variant to meet higher requirements for vehicle safety, ride comfort, and driver-assist. This research is to investigate if a CAE methodology could be innovated to better simulate the durability of a steering system under various working scenarios; figure out the critical features of the modeling; conduct a correct analysis procedure for validating the modeling and collecting data for evaluation. With step by step in modeling and analysis, a well-established example of CAE model of EPAS is enabled to highlight the novelty of steering vehicle level CAE methodology and therefore achieve the research goal.

Unified Power-Based Analysis of Combustion Engine and Battery Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption

The previously developed power-based fuel consumption theory for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEV) is extended to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). The main difference between the BEV model structure and the ICEV is the bi-directional character of traction motors and batteries. A traction motor model was developed as a bi-linear function of positive and negative traction power. Another difference is that the accessories and cabin heating are powered directly from the battery, and not from the powertrain. The resulting unified model for ICEV and BEV energy consumption has linear terms proportional to positive and negative traction power, accessory power, and overhead, in varying proportions. Compared to the ICEV, the BEV powertrain has a high marginal efficiency and low overhead. As a result, BEV energy consumption data under a wide range of driving conditions are mainly proportional to net traction power, with only a small offset.

This paper presents a method of using CAE to determine the pre-load and torque applied to a U-Bolt rear Spring Seat. In this paper it is review two U-bolt design and the stresses generated by the pre-load torque applied, based in this study a process to determine the minimal preload and the torque is discussed. By this process it is possible to determine the minimum Torque and the correct pre-load in the U-Bolt element and assuring the correct fastening of the components avoiding over stress in the Bar elements.

As the world searches for ways to reduce humanity’s impact on the environment, the automotive industry looks to extend the viable use of the gasoline engine by improving efficiency. One way to improve engine efficiency is through more effective control. Torque-based control is critical in modern cars and trucks for traction control, stability control, advanced driver assistance systems, and autonomous vehicle systems. Closed loop torque-based engine control systems require feedback signal(s); indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is a useful signal but is costly to measure directly with in-cylinder pressure sensors. Previous work has been done in torque and IMEP estimation using crankshaft acceleration and ion sensors, but these systems lack accuracy in some operating ranges and the ability to estimate cycle-cycle variation.

Experimental Validation of Eco-Driving and Eco-Heating Strategies for Connected and Automated HEVs

This paper presents experimental results that validate eco-driving and eco-heating strategies developed for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). By exploiting vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, traffic signal timing, and queue length estimations, optimized and smoothed speed profiles for the ego-vehicle are generated to reduce energy consumption. Next, the planned eco-trajectories are incorporated into a real-time predictive optimization framework that coordinates the cabin thermal load (in cold weather) with the speed preview, i.e., eco-heating. To enable eco-heating, the engine coolant (as the only heat source for cabin heating) and the cabin air are leveraged as two thermal energy storages. Our eco-heating strategy stores thermal energy in the engine coolant and cabin air while the vehicle is driving at high speeds, and releases the stored energy slowly during the vehicle stops for cabin heating without forcing the engine to idle to provide the heating source.

Corrosion Performance of a Magnesium Tower Brace

This study reports the corrosion performance of three different coating strategies tested on an AE44 high performance magnesium strut tower brace used on the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The alloy was selected due to its improved structural performance at higher temperatures over conventional AM60B magnesium die castings. The first coating strategy used no pretreatment, conversion coating, or topcoat to gage the baseline corrosion performance of the uncoated alloy. The second coating strategy used a conventional pretreatment commonly used on AM60B alloy. The third used a ceramic-based conversion coating. A textured (stipple) powder coat was then applied to the two non-baseline parts over the pretreatment. All three coating strategies were then evaluated by comparing the corrosion performance after cyclic corrosion testing for 12 weeks using the Ford L-467 test.

Engine and Aftertreatment Co-Optimization of Connected HEVs via Multi-Range Vehicle Speed Planning and Prediction

Connected vehicles (CVs) have situational awareness that can be exploited for control and optimization of the powertrain system. While extensive studies have been carried out for energy efficiency improvement of CVs via eco-driving and planning, the implication of such technologies on the thermal responses of CVs (including those of the engine and aftertreatment systems) has not been fully investigated. One of the key challenges in leveraging connectivity for optimization-based thermal management of CVs is the relatively slow thermal dynamics, which necessitate the use of a long prediction horizon to achieve the best performance. Long-term prediction of the CV speed, unlike the short-range prediction based on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications-based information, is difficult and error-prone.

An LQR Approach of Automatic Transmission Upshift Control Including Use of Off-Going Clutch within Inertia Phase

This paper considers using linear quadratic regulation (LQR) for multi-input control of the Automatic Transmission (AT) upshift inertia phase. The considered control inputs include the transmission input/engine torque, oncoming clutch torque, and traditionally not used off-going clutch torque. Use of the off-going clutch has been motivated by discussed Control Trajectory Optimization (CTO) results demonstrating that employing the off-going clutch during the inertia phase along with the main, oncoming clutch can improve the upshift control performance in terms of the shift duration and/or comfort by trading off the transmission efficiency and control simplicity to some extent. The proposed LQR approach provides setting an optimal trade-off between the conflicting criteria related to driving comfort and clutches thermal energy loss.

Unified Power-Based Vehicle Fuel Consumption Model Covering a Range of Conditions

Previously fuel consumption on a drive cycle has been shown to be proportional to traction work, with an offset for powertrain losses. This model had different transfer functions for different drive cycles, performance levels, and applied powertrain technologies. Following Soltic it is shown that if fuel usage and traction work are both expressed in terms of cycle average power, a wide range of drive cycles collapse to a single transfer function, where cycle average traction power captures the drive cycle and the vehicle size. If this transfer function is then normalized by weight, i.e. by working in cycle average power/weight (P/W), a linear model is obtained where the offset is mainly a function of rated performance and applied technology. A final normalization by rated power/weight as the primary performance metric further collapses the data to express the cycle average fuel power/rated power ratio as a function of cycle average traction power/rated power ratio.

An Investigation into the Traction and Anti-Lock Braking System Control Design

Wheel slip control is crucial to active safety control systems such as Traction Control System (TCS) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that ensure vehicle safety by maintaining the wheel slip in a stable region. For this reason, a wide variety of control methods has been implemented by both researchers and in the industry. Moreover, the use of new electro-hydraulic or electro-mechanical brakes, and in-wheel electric motors allow for a more precise wheel slip control, which should further improve the vehicle dynamics and safety. In this paper, we compare two methods for wheel slip control: a loop-shaping Youla parametrization method, and a sliding mode control method. Each controller is designed based on a simple single wheel system. The benefits and drawbacks of both methods are addressed. Finally, the performance and stability robustness of each controller is evaluated based on several metrics in a simulation using a high-fidelity vehicle model with several driving scenarios.

Axle Efficiency Comparison Method and Spin Loss Benefit of Front Axle Disconnect Systems

There are a variety of test protocols associated with vehicle fuel economy and emissions testing. As a result, a number of test protocols currently exist to measure axle efficiency and spin loss. The intent of this technical paper is to describe a methodology that uses a singular axle efficiency and spin loss procedure. The data can then be used to predict the effects on vehicle FE and GHG for a specific class of vehicles via simulation. An accelerated break-in method using a comparable energy approach has been developed, and can be used to meet the break-in requirements of different vehicle emission test protocols. A “float to equilibrium” sump temperature approach has been used to produce instantaneous efficiency data, which can be used to more accurately predict vehicle FE and GHG, inclusive of Cold CO2. The “Float to Equilibrium” approach and “Fixed Sump Temperature” approach has been compared and discussed.

Integrated Regenerative Braking System and Anti-Lock Braking System for Hybrid Electric Vehicles & Battery Electric Vehicles

This paper describes development of an integrated regenerative braking system and anti-lock brake system (ABS) control during an ABS event for hybrid and electric vehicles with drivelines containing a single electric motor connected to the axle shaft through an open differential. The control objectives are to recuperate the maximum amount of kinetic energy during an ABS event, and to provide no degraded anti-lock control behavior as seen in vehicles with regenerative braking disabled. The paper first presents a detailed control system analysis to reveal the inherent property of non-zero regenerative braking torque control during ABS event and explain the reason why regenerative braking torque can increase the wheel slip during ABS event with existing regenerative braking control strategies.

The effects of contamination on commercial trucks rear suspension springs durability

On current competitive scenario for road load transportation in Brazilian market, the operational costs should be reduced as much as possible. The suspension system commonly used on road commercial trucks is based on leaf spring use and Hotchkiss concept for axle locating devices. The use of leaf springs without bolt attachment eyelets are still common for rear suspension systems. When using the leaf spring with direct contact to the brackets, wear plates are placed between them to work as wear elements due to the friction between the parts. The friction will cause wear on the parts, and the wear plate is designed to suffer the damages of this friction instead of the leaf spring, being the cheapest element and can be easily replaced. When the system works on a severe contamination environment with high levels of grit and dirt, the degradation of the parts are accelerated.

The brake pedal is the brake system component that the driver fundamentally has contact and through its action wait the response of the whole system. Each OEM defines during vehicle conceptualization the behavior of brake pedal that characterizes the pedal feel that in general reflects not only the characteristic from that vehicle but also from the entire brand. Technically, the term known as Pedal Feel means the relation between the force applied on the pedal, the pedal travel and the deceleration achieved by the vehicle. Such relation curves are also analyzed in conjunction with objective analysis sheets where the vehicle brake behavior is analyzed in test track considering different deceleration conditions, force and pedal travel. On technical literature, it is possible to find some data and studies considering the hydraulic brakes behavior.

Comparative Analysis between American and European Requirements for Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Focusing on Commercial Vehicles

Analysis of road accidents has shown that an important portion of fatal crashes involving Commercial Vehicles are caused by rollovers. ESC systems in Commercial Vehicles can reduce rollovers, severe understeer or oversteer conditions and minimize occurrences of jackknifing events. Several studies have estimated that this positive effect of ESC on road safety is substantial. In Europe, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is expected to prevent by far the most fatalities and injuries: about 3,000 fatalities (-14%), and about 50,000 injuries (-6%) per year. In Europe, Electronic Stability Control Systems is mandatory for all vehicles (since Nov. 1st, 2011 for new types of vehicle and Nov. 1st, 2014 for all new vehicles), including Commercial Vehicles, Buses, Trucks and Trailers.
