Harmonizing Safety Regulations and Perception: A Simulation Methodology for AVAS System Design

The development of an effective Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) is not solely about adhering to safety regulations; it also involves crafting an auditory experience that aligns with the expectations of vulnerable road users. To achieve this, a deep understanding of the acoustic transfer function is essential, as it defines the relationship between the sound emitter (the speaker inside the vehicle) and the receiver (the vulnerable road user). Maintaining the constancy of this acoustic transfer function is paramount, as it ensures that the sound emitted by the vehicle aligns with the intended safety cues and brand identity that is defined by the car manufacturer. In this research paper, three distinct methodologies for calculating the acoustic transfer function are presented: the classical Boundary Element method, the H-Matrix BEM accelerated method, and the Ray tracing method.

Estimation of Poroelastic Material Properties of Noise Control Treatments Using Model Order Reduction

Noise reduction is generally accomplished by applying appropriate noise control treatments at strategic locations. Noise control treatments consisting of poroelastic materials in layers are extensively used in noise control products. Sound propagation through poroelastic materials is governed by macroscopic material and geometric properties. Thus, a knowledge of material properties is important to improve the acoustical performance of the resulting noise control products. Since the direct measurement of these properties is cumbersome, these have been usually estimated indirectly from easily measurable acoustic performance metrics such as normal incidence sound transmission and/or absorption coefficient, measured using readily available impedance tube. The existing inverse characterization approaches fulfilled the estimation by curve fitting measured and predicted acoustic models.

A Simulation Methodology to Design the AVAS System to Meet Safety Regulations and Create the Expected Perception for the Vulnerable Road User

Designing an effective AVAS system, not only to meet safety regulations, but also to create the expected perception for the vulnerable road user, relies on knowledge of the acoustic transfer function between the sound actuator and the receiver. It is preferable that the acoustic transfer function be as constant as possible to allow transferring the sound designed by the car OEM to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users while conveying the proper brand image. In this paper three different methodologies for the acoustic transfer function calculations are presented and compared in terms of accuracy and calculation time: classic Boundary Element method, H-Matrix BEM accelerated method and Ray tracing method. An example of binaural listening experience at different certification positions in the modeled simulated space is also presented.

Prediction of Minimum Sound Emission Requirements of an Electric/Hybrid Vehicle

Electric and Hybrid vehicles have standards for emitting enough noise to reduce danger and risk to pedestrians when operating at low speeds. Simulation can help to support development and deployment of these systems while avoiding a time-consuming, test-based approach to design these AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) warning systems. Traditionally, deterministic simulation methods such as Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) are used at low frequencies and statistical, energy-based methods such as Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) are used at high frequencies. The deterministic methods are accurate, but computationally inefficient, particularly when the frequency increases. SEA is computationally efficient but does not capture well the physics of exterior acoustic propagation. An alternative method commonly used in room acoustics, based on geometrical or ray acoustics, is “Ray Tracing” and can be used for sound field prediction.

Material Characterization of Multi-Layered Noise Control Treatments from Random-Incidence Transmission Loss

Sound propagation through noise control treatment is governed by fluid, mechanical and geometric properties of the materials. The knowledge of material properties is important to improve the acoustical performance of the resulting noise control products. A method based on optimization together with genetic algorithm is used to estimate material properties of multi-layered treatments. Unlike previous inverse characterization approaches based on normal incidence performance metrics measured using standing wave impedance tubes, the current approach is based on random incidence performance metrics. Specially, the insertion loss ‘measured’ from two room transmission loss suite is utilized. To validate the applicability of the proposed method, numerically synthesized insertion loss computed from known material properties are used. In order to properly represent the ‘measured’ values, noise is added to the numerically synthesized insertion loss values.

Limitations of Sector Mesh Geometry and Initial Conditions to Model Flow and Mixture Formation in Direct-Injection Diesel Engines

Sector mesh modeling is the dominant computational approach for combustion system design optimization. The aim of this work is to quantify the errors descending from the sector mesh approach through three geometric modeling approaches to an optical diesel engine. A full engine geometry mesh is created, including valves and intake and exhaust ports and runners, and a full-cycle flow simulation is performed until fired TDC. Next, an axisymmetric sector cylinder mesh is initialized with homogeneous bulk in-cylinder initial conditions initialized from the full-cycle simulation. Finally, a 360-degree azimuthal mesh of the cylinder is initialized with flow and thermodynamics fields at IVC mapped from the full engine geometry using a conservative interpolation approach. A study of the in-cylinder flow features until TDC showed that the geometric features on the cylinder head (valve tilt and protrusion into the combustion chamber, valve recesses) have a large impact on flow complexity.

A Pass-By Noise Prediction Method Based on Source-Path-Receiver Approach Combining Simulation and Test Data

Optimizing noise control treatments in the early design phase is crucial to meet new strict regulations for exterior vehicle noise. Contribution analysis of the different sources to the exterior acoustic performance plays an important role in prioritizing design changes. A method to predict Pass-by noise performance of a car, based on source-path-receiver approach, combining data coming from simulation and experimental campaigns, is presented along with its validation. With this method the effect of trim and sound package on exterior noise can be predicted and optimized.

Correlation and Verification of a Tractor Cab Model Using Statistical Energy Analysis

A model of a tractor cab was built using Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) best practices. In this paper, it is shown how this model was correlated using p/Q transfer functions measured in the lab with a volume velocity source. After correlation, the model was excited using acoustic loads measured during tractor operation. It was found that the data predicted by the model is in good agreement with the data measured inside the cabin during this test. It was concluded that SEA can be used as an engineering tool to predict the behavior under many different conditions and can be used to guide the development process.

Acoustic Simulation of Multilayered Noise Control Treatment with Porous Material

Porous materials have been applied increasingly for absorbing noise energy and improving the acoustic performance. Different models have been proposed to predict the performance of these materials, and much progress has been achieved. However, most of the foregoing researches have been conducted on a single layer of porous material. In real application, porous materials are usually combined with other kinds of materials to compose a multilayered noise control treatment. This paper investigates the acoustic performance of such treatments with a combination of porous and non-porous media. Results from numerical simulation are compared to experimental measurements. Transfer matrix method is adopted to simulate the insertion loss and absorption associated with three samples of a noise control treatment product, which has two porous layers bonded by an impervious screen.

Virtual Temperature Controlled Seat Performance Test

The demand for seating comfort is growing - in cars as well as trucks and other commercial vehicles. This is expected as the seat is the largest surface area of the vehicle that is in contact with the occupant. While it is predominantly luxury cars that have been equipped with climate controlled seats, there is now a clear trend toward this feature becoming available in mid-range and compact cars. The main purpose of climate controlled seats is to create an agreeable microclimate that keeps the driver comfortable. It also reduces the “stickiness” feeling which is reported by perspiring occupants on leather-covered seats. As part of the seat design process, a physical test is performed to record and evaluate the life cycle and the performance at ambient and extreme temperatures for the climate controlled seats as well as their components. The test calls for occupied and unoccupied seats at several ambient temperatures.

A Fuzzy Inference System for Understeer/Oversteer Detection Towards Model-Free Stability Control

In this paper, a soft computing approach to a model-free vehicle stability control (VSC) algorithm is presented. The objective is to create a fuzzy inference system (FIS) that is robust enough to operate in a multitude of vehicle conditions (load, tire wear, alignment), and road conditions while at the same time providing optimal vehicle stability by detecting and minimizing loss of traction. In this approach, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is generated using previously collected data to train and optimize the performance of the fuzzy logic VSC algorithm. This paper outlines the FIS detection algorithm and its benefits over a model-based approach. The performance of the FIS-based VSC is evaluated via a co-simulation of MATLAB/Simulink and CarSim model of the vehicle under various road and load conditions. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is capable of accurately indicating unstable vehicle behavior for two different types of vehicles (SUV and Sedan).

A Model-Free Stability Control Design Scheme with Active Steering Actuator Sets

This paper presents the application of a proposed fuzzy inference system as part of a stability control design scheme implemented with active steering actuator sets. The fuzzy inference system is used to detect the level of overseer/understeer at the high level and a speed-adaptive activation module determines whether an active front steering, active rear steering, or active 4 wheel steering is suited to improve vehicle handling stability. The resulting model-free system is capable of minimizing the amount of model calibration during the vehicle stability control development process as well as improving vehicle performance and stability over a wide range of vehicle and road conditions. A simulation study will be presented that evaluates the proposed scheme and compares the effectiveness of active front steer (AFS) and active rear steer (ARS) in enhancing the vehicle performance. Both time and frequency domain results are presented.

NVH Development of the Ford 2.7L 4V-V6 Turbocharged Engine

A new turbocharged 60° 2.7L 4V-V6 gasoline engine has been developed by Ford Motor Company for both pickup trucks and car applications. This engine was code named “Nano” due to its compact size; it features a 4-valves DOHC valvetrain, a CGI cylinder block, an Aluminum ladder, an integrated exhaust manifold and twin turbochargers. The goal of this engine is to deliver 120HP/L, ULEV70 emission, fuel efficiency improvements and leadership level NVH. This paper describes the upfront design and optimization process used for the NVH development of this engine. It showcases the use of analytical tools used to define the critical design features and discusses the NVH performance relative to competitive benchmarks.

Flow-Induced Whistle in the Joint of Thermal Expansion Valve and Suction Tube in Automotive Refrigerant System

In the thermal expansion valve (TXV) refrigerant system, transient high-pitched whistle around 6.18 kHz is often perceived following air-conditioning (A/C) compressor engagements when driving at higher vehicle speed or during vehicle acceleration, especially when system equipped with the high-efficiency compressor or variable displacement compressor. The objectives of this paper are to conduct the noise source identification, investigate the key factors affecting the whistle excitation, and understand the mechanism of the whistle generation. The mechanism is hypothesized that the whistle is generated from the flow/acoustic excitation of the turbulent flow past the shallow cavity, reinforced by the acoustic/structural coupling between the tube structural and the transverse acoustic modes, and then transmitted to evaporator. To verify the mechanism, the transverse acoustic mode frequency is calculated and it is coincided to the one from measurement.

CAE Simulation of Engine Tonal Noise Generated by Gerotor Oil Pumps

A CAE method has been developed to address engine tonal noise and whine due to the excitation from a gerotor oil pump. The method involves a multidisciplinary approach including CFD, frequency-response structural analysis and acoustic analysis. The results from the application of the method applied to a couple of pumps with different designs are discussed. Engine tonal noise improvement through reduction in the excitation source from the pump and also stiffening the excitation path from the pump to the engine are studied. The effect of component modal alignment with oil pump orders is addressed as well.

Study of Stick-Slip Friction between Plunging Driveline

Driveline plunge mechanism dynamics has a significant contribution to the driver's perceivable transient NVH error states and to the transmission shift quality. As it accounts for the pitch or roll movements of the front powerplant and rear drive unit, the plunging joints exhibit resisting force in the fore-aft direction under various driveline torque levels. This paper tackles the difficult task of quantifying the coefficient of static friction and the coefficient of dynamic friction in a simple to use metric as it performs in the vehicle. The comparison of the dynamic friction to the static friction allows for the detection of the occurrence of stick-slip in the slip mechanism; which enables for immediate determination of the performance of the design parameters such as spline geometry, mating parts fit and finish, and lubrication. It also provides a simple format to compare a variety of designs available to the automotive design engineer.

A Multibody Dynamics Approach to Leaf Spring Simulation for Upfront Analyses

Drivelines used in modern pickup trucks commonly employ universal joints. This type of joint is responsible for second driveshaft order vibrations in the vehicle. Large displacements of the joint connecting the driveline and the rear axle have a detrimental effect on vehicle NVH. As leaf springs are critical energy absorbing elements that connect to the powertrain, they are used to restrain large axle windup angles. One of the most common types of leaf springs in use today is the multi-stage parabolic leaf spring. A simple SAE 3-link approximation is adequate for preliminary studies but it has been found to be inadequate to study axle windup. A vast body of literature exists on modeling leaf springs using nonlinear FEA and multibody simulations. However, these methods require significant amount of component level detail and measured data. As such, these techniques are not applicable for quick sensitivity studies at design conception stage.

Sound Package Design for Lightweight Vehicles

OEMs are racing to develop lightweight vehicles as government regulations now mandate automakers to nearly double the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks by 2025. Lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber composites are being used as structural members in vehicle body and suspension components. The reduction in weight in structural panels increases noise transmission into the passenger compartment. This poses a great challenge in vehicle sound package development since simply increasing weight in sound package components to reduce interior noise is no longer an option [1]. This paper discusses weight saving approaches to reduce noise level at the sources, noise transmission paths, and transmitted noise into the passenger compartment. Lightweight sound package materials are introduced to treat and reduce airborne noise transmission into multi-material lightweight body structure.

Hybrid FEA-SEA Modeling Approach for Vehicle Transfer Function

Finite element analysis (FEA) is commonly used in the automotive industry to predict low frequency NVH behavior (<150 Hz) of structures. Also, statistical energy analysis (SEA) framework is used to predict high frequency (>400 Hz) noise transmission from the source space to the receiver space. A comprehensive approach addressing the entire spectrum (>20 Hz) by taking into account structure-borne and air-borne paths is not commonplace. In the works leading up to this paper a hybrid methodology was employed to predict structure-borne and air-borne transfer functions up to 1000 Hz by combining FEA and SEA. The dash panel was represented by FE structural subsystems and the noise control treatments (NCTs) and the pass-throughs were characterized via testing to limit uncertainty in modeling. The rest of the structure and the fluid spaces were characterized as SEA subsystems.

Model-Based Parameter Identification of Healthy and Aged Li-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicle Applications

Electric vehicles are receiving considerable attention because they offer a more efficient and sustainable transportation alternative compared to conventional fossil-fuel powered vehicles. Since the battery pack represents the primary energy storage component in an electric vehicle powertrain, it requires accurate monitoring and control. In order to effectively estimate the battery pack critical parameters such as the battery state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and remaining capacity, a high-fidelity battery model is needed as part of a robust SOC estimation strategy. As the battery degrades, model parameters significantly change, and this model needs to account for all operating conditions throughout the battery's lifespan. For effective battery management system design, it is critical that the physical model adapts to parameter changes due to aging.
