A Method for Determining Mileage Accumulation for Robustness Validation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Features

Robustness testing of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and reliability of these systems. ADAS features include technologies like adaptive cruise control, lateral and longitudinal controls, automatic emergency braking, and more. These systems rely on various sensors, cameras, radar, lidar, and software algorithms to function effectively. Robustness testing aims to identify potential vulnerabilities and weaknesses in these systems under different conditions, ensuring they can handle unexpected scenarios and maintain their performance. Mileage accumulation is one of the validation methods for achieving robustness. Modelling and Analysis of a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) Algorithm for Fuel Economy

Connectivity in ground vehicles allows vehicles to share crucial vehicle data, such as vehicle acceleration and speed, with each other. Using sensors such as radars and lidars, on the other hand, the intravehicular distance between a leader vehicle and a host vehicle can be detected. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) builds upon ground vehicle connectivity and sensor information to form convoys with automated car following. CACC can also be used to improve fuel economy and mobility performance of vehicles in the said convoy. In this paper, a CACC system is presented, where the acceleration of the lead vehicle is used in the calculation of desired vehicle speed. In addition to the smooth car following abilities, the proposed CACC also has the capability to calculate a speed profile for the ego vehicle that is fuel efficient, making it an Ecological CACC (Eco-CACC) model.

Implementation of Adaptive Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy

Electrification of vehicles is an important step towards making mobility more sustainable and carbon-free. Hybrid electric vehicles use an electric machine with an on-board energy storage system, in some form to provide additional torque and reduce the power requirement from the internal combustion engine. It is important to control and optimize this power source split between the engine and electric machine to make the best use of the system. This paper showcases an implementation of the Adaptive Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (A-ECMS) with minimization in real-time in the dSPACE MicroAutobox II as the Hybrid Supervisory Controller (HSC). While the concept of A-ECMS has been well established for many years, there are no published papers that present results obtained in a production vehicle suitably modified from conventional to hybrid electric propulsion including real world testing as well as testing on regulatory cycles.

Proposal for Relaxation of Airspace Restrictions Based on Flight-Continuation Possibility of UAVs in Event of Failure

The flight area of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had been highly restricted but has been relaxing, including flights beyond the scope of sight. Deregulation without aircraft-reliability improvement increases the risk of accidents. However, demanding high reliability for all aircraft leads to an increase in the price of the aircraft. Therefore, if airspace restrictions are relaxed for more reliable aircraft, the cost of higher reliability and its benefits can be balanced. This will improve efficiency and optimize cost-effectiveness. The purpose of this proposal is to balance the cost of aircraft-reliability improvement (which allows flight to continue in the event of a failure) and its advantages. Specifically, the author proposes rules that apply more relaxed airspace restrictions to UAVs with higher FCLs (Flight Continuity Possibility Levels) and stricter airspace restrictions to those with lower FCLs.

Simulation applied to compaction process in sintered components for product performance optimization

Sintered parts mechanical properties are very sensitive to final density, which inevitable cause an enormous density gradient in the green part coming from the compaction process strategy. The current experimental method to assess green density occurs mainly in set up by cutting the green parts in pieces and measuring its average density in a balance using Archimedes principle. Simulation is the more accurate method to verify gradient density and the main benefit would be the correlation with the critical region in terms of stresses obtained by FEA and try to pursue the optimization process. This paper shows a case study of a part that had your fatigue limit improved 1000% using compaction process simulation for better optimization.

Harshness Improvement in Mid-Size Trucks

Ride comfort is a critical factor to customer perception of vehicle quality as it is related to vehicle experience when driving. It adds value to the product and, consequently, to vehicle brand. It has become a demand not only for passenger unibody vehicles but also to larger segments including mid-size trucks. Ride quality is usually quantified as harshness which is a measure of how the vehicle transmits the road irregularities to the customer at the tactile points such as the steering wheel and seats. Improving harshness requires tuning of different parts including tires, chassis frame/subframe and suspension mounts and bushings. This paper describes the methodology to enhance the harshness performance for a mid-size truck using a full vehicle CAE model. The influence of stiffnesses of body mounts and control arms bushings to harshness response is investigated through sensitivity analysis and the optimal configuration is found.

Improving Cruise Control Efficiency through Speed Flexibility & On-Board Data

In recent decades, significant technological advances have made cruise control systems safer, more automated, and available in more driving scenarios. However, comparatively little progress has been made in optimizing vehicle efficiency while in cruise control. In this paper, two distinct strategies are proposed to deliver efficiency benefits in cruise control by leveraging flexibility around the driver’s requested set speed, and road information that is available on-board in many new vehicles. In today’s cruise control systems, substantial energy is wasted by rigidly controlling to a single set speed regardless of the terrain or road conditions. Introducing even a small allowable “error band” around the set speed can allow the propulsion system to operate in a pseudo-steady state manner across most terrain. As long as the vehicle can remain in the allowed speed window, it can maintain a roughly constant load, traveling slower up hills and faster down hills.

We developed a flexible system with EVs for solving imbalance between electricity demand and supply avoiding degradation of EV’s battery life. Such flexible systems are commonly being examined but nothing the system which uses battery considering impact of its battery life to avoid shorten EV’s operation period. Therefore, we developed one of methodologies to select preferable load facilities based on imbalance trend and flexible prices. The imbalance trend means a duration of the imbalance. The flexible prices mean operation cost to provide flexibility. By comparing the flexible prices and operation profit, it is possible to prevent unnecessary operation. As a result, we demonstrated our flexible system works as designed based on these parameters.

Modular Multilevel GaN Based Ultra-High Power Density Electric Power Conversion and Transmission on the Lunar Surface

NASA’s Watts on the Moon Challenge is seeking solutions to transfer at least 1.065 kW power from a 120 V dc source to a 24-32 V dc load over a 3-km distance under the same environmental conditions as the Lunar surface (i.e., 77 K temperature and 1 mTorr pressure). The selected solution from the author’s team proposed utilizing two modular multilevel Gallium Nitride (GaN) based isolated dc-dc converters to connect the 120 V dc source with the 24-32 V dc load bank via 1.5 kV rated dc transmission lines. The modular multilevel converters feature frequency multiplication, high step-down voltage ratio and low device voltage stress. In the converters, GaN gate injection transistor (GaN GIT) and GaN High-Electron-Mobility Transistor (GaN HEMT) devices are chosen as switching devices, due to the merits of lower power loss, radiation hardness and ability to work under cryogenic and vacuum conditions.

Three-Layered Design, Protection & Control of Lunar DC Microgrids Utilizing WBG-Based Flexible DC Energy Router

The reliable operation of power systems on the lunar surface is crucial for critical research activities and supporting life. These systems are standalone or interconnected grids that integrate intermittent power sources and distributed energy storage. Lunar microgrids must be highly reliable, reconfigurable, and efficient. To meet these requirements, we propose the flexible DC energy router (FeDER), a modular and scalable power management unit for interconnected lunar DC microgrids. The FeDER integrates local energy storage and addresses various microgrid power management needs such as fault management, stability enhancement, power flow regulation, and power quality improvement. The lunar DC microgrids' design, protection, and control are achieved using a three-layered approach: (1) graph theory, (2) energy management system, and (3) smart resistor control. The lunar power grid architecture is introduced and the FeDER stability enhancement is implemented in the OPAL-RT platform.

Model-Based Fault Diagnostic Strategy for Microgrids

Microgrids are a topic of interest in recent years, largely due to their compatibility with the integration of distributed renewable resources, capability for bidirectional power flow, and ability to reconfigure to mitigate the effects of faults. Fault diagnosis algorithms are a foundational technology for microgrids. These algorithms must have two primary capabilities. First, faults must be detectable; it is known when the fault occurs. Second, faults must be isolable; the type and location of detected faults can be determined. However, most fault handling research considering microgrids has focused on the protection algorithm. Protection algorithms seek to quickly extinguish dangerous faults which can damage components. However, these algorithms may not sufficiently capture less severe faults, or provide comprehensive monitoring for the microgrid. This is particularly relevant when considering applications involving fault tolerant control or dynamic grid reconfiguration.

Optimized Control Strategy for Inductor-based Cell Equalizers

The occurrence of imbalance conditions within the cells of a battery pack can be reduced or mitigated by an active cell equalization circuit integrated in the Battery Management System (BMS), which transfers energy between the most charged cells and the least charged ones in the pack. However, incomplete knowledge on the performances and range of operability in real-world scenarios is still limiting the adoption of active equalizers for lithium-ion battery systems in different fields of application. In this paper, among the different architectures presented in literature for active cell equalizers, the multi-inductor configuration has been investigated. For the generalized category of inductor-based configuration, an analytical model has been developed by taking into account the static and dynamic parasitic parameters of the components of the equalization circuit as well as the operating conditions of the cells.

Co-Simulation Framework for Electro-Thermal Modeling of Lithium-Ion Cells for Automotive Applications

Battery packs used in automotive application experience high-power demands, fast charging, and varied operating conditions, resulting in temperature imbalances that hasten degradation, reduce cycle life, and pose safety risks. The development of proper simulation tools capable of capturing both the cell electrical and thermal response including, predicting the cell’s temperature rise and distribution, is critical to design efficient and reliable battery packs. This paper presents a co-simulation model framework capable of predicting voltage, 2-D heat generation and temperature distribution throughout a cell. To capture the terminal voltage and 2-D heat generation across the cell, the simulation framework employs a high-fidelity electrical model paired with a charge balance model based on the Poisson equation. The 2-D volumetric heat generation provided by the charge balance model is used to predict the temperature distribution across the cell surface using CFD software.

Predictive 3D-CFD Model for the Analysis of the Development of Soot Deposition Layer on Sensor Surfaces

After-treatment sensors are used in the ECU feedback control to calibrate the engine operating parameters. Due to their contact with exhaust gases, especially NOx sensors are prone to soot deposition with a consequent decay of their performance. Several phenomena occur at the same time leading to sensor contamination: thermophoresis, unburnt hydrocarbons condensation and eddy diffusion of submicron particles. Conversely, soot combustion and shear forces may act in reducing soot deposition. This study proposes a predictive 3D-CFD model for the analysis of the development of soot deposition layer on the sensor surfaces. Alongside with the implementation of deposit and removal mechanisms, the effects on both thermal properties and shape of the surfaces are taken in account. The latter leads to obtain a more accurate and complete modelling of the phenomenon influencing the sensor overall performance.

Application of a Machine Learning Approach for Selective Catalyst Reduction Catalyst 3D-CFD Modeling: Numerical Method Development and Experimental Validation

Internal combustion engines (ICEs) exhaust emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), have become a growing environmental and health concern. The biggest challenge for contemporary ICE industry is the development of clean ICEs, and the use of advanced design tools like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation is paramount to achieve this goal. In particular, the development of aftertreatment systems like Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) is a key step to reduce NOx emissions, and accurate and efficient CFD models are essential for its design and optimization. In this work, we propose a novel 3D-CFD methodology, which uses a Machine Learning (ML) approach as a surrogate model for the SCR catalyst chemistry, which aims to enhance accuracy of the simulations with a moderate computational cost. The ML approach is trained on a dataset generated from a set of 1D-CFD simulations of a single channel of an SCR catalyst.

Development of a Gear Backlash Compensator for Electric Machines in P0-P4 Parallel Hybrid Drivelines

Backlash is the movement between the gear teeth that allows them to mate without binding. Backlash can cause large torque fluctuations in vehicle powertrains when the input torque changes direction. These fluctuations cause a jerk and shuddering, which negatively affects drive quality. Input torque frequently changes direction in electric vehicles due to regenerative braking. Limiting zero crossings is an option for better drive quality; however, this leads to decreased vehicle efficiency. Because of this, modulating the torque through the backlash region is preferred, yet, if done poorly, it can result in sluggish torque response. This paper proposes a torque-shaping algorithm for an electric motor and gear/differential system to reduce backlash in electric vehicles. The control algorithm modulates the commanded torque’s rate of change based on the vehicle speed and zero-crossing torque.

Vehicle in Virtual Environment (VVE) Method of Autonomous Driving Function Evaluation and Development

Autonomous vehicle (AV) algorithms need to be tested extensively in order to make sure the vehicle and the passengers will be safe while using it after the implementation. Testing these algorithms in real world create another important safety critical point. Real world testing is also subjected to limitations such as logistic limitations to carry or drive the vehicle to a certain location. For this purpose, hardware in the loop (HIL) simulations as well as virtual environments such as CARLA and LG SVL are used widely. This paper discusses a method that combines the real vehicle with the virtual world, called vehicle in virtual environment (VVE). This method projects the vehicle location and heading into a virtual world for desired testing, and transfers back the information from sensors in the virtual world to the vehicle.

Data Association between Perception and V2V Communication Sensors

The connectivity between vehicles, infrastructure, and other traffic participants brings a new dimension to automotive safety applications. Soon all the newly produced cars will have Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication modems alongside the existing Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS). It is essential to identify the different sensor measurements for the same targets (Data Association) to use connectivity reliably as a safety feature alongside the standard ADAS functionality. Considering the camera is the most common sensor available for ADAS systems, in this paper, we present an experimental implementation of a Mahalanobis distance-based data association algorithm between the camera and the Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication sensors. The implemented algorithm has low computational complexity and the capability of running in real-time. One can use the presented algorithm for sensor fusion algorithms or higher-level decision-making applications in ADAS modules.

Prescan Extension Testing of an ADAS Camera

Testing vision-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in a Camera-in-the-Loop (CiL) bench setup, where external visual inputs are used to stimulate the system, provides an opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of test scenarios, different types of vehicle actors, vulnerable road users, and weather conditions that may be difficult to replicate in the real world. In addition, once the CiL bench is setup and operating, experiments can be performed in less time when compared to track testing alternatives. In order to better quantify normal operating zones, track testing results were used to identify behavior corridors via a statistical methodology. After determining normal operational variability via track testing of baseline stationary surrogate vehicle and pedestrian scenarios, these operating zones were applied to screen-based testing in a CiL test setup to determine particularly challenging scenarios which might benefit from replication in a track testing environment.

Study on State-of-the-Art Preventive Maintenance Techniques for ADS Vehicle Safety

1 Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS) are developing rapidly. As vehicle technology advances to SAE level 3 and above (L4, L5), there is a need to maximize and verify safety and operational benefits. As a result, maintenance of these ADS systems is essential which includes scheduled, condition-based, risk-based, and predictive maintenance. A lot of techniques and methods have been developed and are being used in the maintenance of conventional vehicles as well as other industries, but ADS is new technology and several of these maintenance types are still being developed as well as adapted for ADS. In this work, we are presenting a systematic literature review of the “State of the Art” knowledge for the maintenance of a fleet of ADS which includes fault diagnostics, prognostics, predictive maintenance, and preventive maintenance.
