Reduction of Flow-induced Noise in Refrigeration Cycles

In electrified vehicles, auxiliary units can be a dominant source of noise, one of which is the refrigerant scroll compressor. Compared to vehicles with combustion engines, e-vehicles require larger refrigerant compressors, as in addition to the interior, also the battery and the electric motors have to be cooled. Currently, scroll compressors are widely used in the automotive industry, which generate one pressure pulse per revolution due to their discontinuous compression principle. This results in speed-dependent pressure fluctuations as well as higher-harmonic pulsations that arise from reflections. These fluctuations spread through the refrigeration cycle and cause the vibration excitation of refrigerant lines and heat exchangers. The sound transmission path in the air conditioning heat exchanger integrated in the dashboard is particularly critical. Various silencer configurations can be used to dampen these pulsations.

Challenges of measuring low levels of CO2 and NOx on H2-ICE

Society is moving towards climate neutrality where hydrogen fuelled combustion engines (H2 ICE) could be considered a main technology. These engines run on hydrogen (H2) so carbon-based emission are only present at a very low level from the lube oil. The most important pollutants NO and NO2 are caused by the exhaust aftertreatment system as well as CO2 coming from the ambient air. For standard measurement technologies these low levels of CO2 are hard to detect due to the high water content. Normal levels of CO2 are between 400-500 ppm which is very close or even below the detection limit of commonly used non-dispersive-infrared-detectors (NDIR). As well the high water content is very challenging for NOx measuring devices, like chemiluminescence detectors (CLD), where it results in higher noise and therefore a worse detection limit. Even for Fourier-transformed-infrared-spectroscopy-analysers (FT-IR) it is challenging to deal with water content over 15% without increased noise.

Method for Root Bending Fatigue Life Prediction in Differential Gears and Validation with Hardware Tests

An advanced multi-layer material model has been developed to simulate the complex behavior in case-carburized gears where hardness dependent strength and elastic-plastic behavior is characterized. Also, an advanced fatigue model has been calibrated to material fatigue tests over a wide range of conditions and implemented in FEMFAT software for root bending fatigue life prediction in differential gears. An FEA model of a differential is setup to simulate the rolling contact and transient stresses occurring within the differential gears. Gear root bending fatigue life is predicted using the calculated stresses and the FEMFAT fatigue model. A specialized rig test is set up and used to measure the fatigue life of the differential over a range of load conditions. Root bending fatigue life predictions are shown to correlate very well with the measured fatigue life in the rig test.

In view of BS-VI emission norms implementation in Commercial Vehicle (CV) application, the emissions are not only confirmed in standard condition but also in non-standard condition including different combinations of ambient temperature and pressure especially for checking the emission in WNTE cycle. However, achieving the emissions in different environmental conditions require physical emission calibration to be performed in those conditions. Hence, engine must be calibrated in climatic test chambers to ensure emission in different climatic conditions leading to multifold increase in the calibration effort. With addition of BS-VI emission regulation, After Treatment System (ATS) is a mandatory requirement to reduce the tail pipe emissions. Efficient functioning of ATS requires enough heating to convert the engine out emissions. Vehicle level Real Drive Emission (RDE) measurement without Conformity Factor (CF) limitation are added as an important legislative requirement.

The major objective of this paper is to develop thermal management strategy targeting optimum performance of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst in a Medium Duty Diesel Engine performing in BS6 emission cycles. In the current scenario, the Emissions Norms are becoming more stringent and with the introduction of Real Drive Emission Test (RDE) and WHTC test comprising of both cold and hot phase, there is a need to develop techniques and strategies which are quick to respond in real time to cope with emission limit especially NOx. SCR seems to be suitable solution in reducing NOx in real time. However, there are limitations to SCR operating conditions, the major being the dosing release conditions which defines the gas temperature at which DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) can be injected as DEF injection at lower gas temperatures than dosing release will lead to Urea deposit formation and will significantly hamper the SCR performance.

A PN-Measurement System for Small Engine Applications

Particulates are among the most harmful emission components of internal combustion engines (ICE)). Thus, emission limits have been widely introduced, e.g., for light- and heavy-duty vehicles. Although there are still engine applications without particulate limitations, the measurement of particulate mass (PM) and particulate number (PN) emissions is therefore of special interest for the development and operation of ICE. For this purpose, a measurement system for PN consisting of a custom-built sample conditioning and dilution system, and a TSI 3790-A10 [1] condensation particle counter (CPC) as particle number counter (PNC) was designed and built. In this work, we present the conditioning and dilution system, the operational parameters, and results from the particle concentration reduction factor (PCRF) calibration.

Impacts of eFuels on Solid and Gaseous Emissions of Powersport Two-Wheelers

As alternative to electrification or carbon free fuels such as hydrogen, CO2-neutral fuels have been researched aiming to decrease the impact of fossil energy sources on the environment. Despite the potential benefit of capturing CO2 emission after combustion for own fuel production, the so-called eFuels also benefit by using a green source of energy during their fabrication. Among all the possibilities for eFuels, alcohols, ethers (such as MTBE and ETBE) and alternative hydrocarbons have shown positive impacts regarding emission reduction and performance when compared to standard gasoline. Previously in [1] and [2], synthetic fuels and methanol blends were tested at steady state conditions in order to verify advantages and drawbacks relative to gasoline, for power-sport motorcycles.

Exhaust Aftertreatment Technologies for PN Reduction of Motorcycles

The objective of this experimental investigation was to analyze the effect of various exhaust gas aftertreatment technologies on particulate number emissions (PN) of an MPFI EU5 motorcycle. Specifically, three different aftertreatment strategies were compared, including a three-way-catalyst (TWC) with LS structure as the baseline, a hybrid catalyst with a wire mesh filter, and an optimized gasoline particulate filter (GPF) with three-way catalytic coating. Experimental investigations using the standard test cycle WMTC performed on a two-wheeler chassis dynamometer, while the inhouse particulate sampling system was utilized to gather information about size-dependent filtering efficiency, storage, and combustion of nanoparticles. The particulate sampling and measuring system consist of three condensation particle counters (CPCs) calibrated to three different size classes (SPN4, SPN10, SPN23).

Potential for Particulate Reduction by Use of eFuels in MPFI Engines

Currently, emission regulations for the LVs using standard spark ignited ICEs considering only gaseous pollutants, just as CO, HC and NOx. Following the upcoming legislation for personal vehicles sector, the LVs might also include limits of PN and PM. Regarding fuel injection strategies, the MPFI which was previously excluded from particulate control will be incorporated into the new regulation [1]. In terms of social harm, there will be a necessity to reduce engine particulate emissions, as they are known for being carcinogenic substances [2, 3, 4]. Generally, the smaller the particulate diameter, the more critical are the damages for human health therefore, the correct determination of PN and particulate diameter is essential. Beside future challenges for reducing and controlling particulates, the reduction of fossil fuel usage is also an imminent target, being the replacement by eFuels one of the most promising alternatives.

Lifecycle Carbon Footprint Calculation of Hand-Held Tool Propulsion Concepts

Following the recent trend in the automotive industry, hybrid and pure electric powertrain systems are more and more preferred over conventional combustion powertrain systems due to their significant potential to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Although electric powertrains do not produce direct emissions during their operational time, the indirect emissions over their whole life cycle have to be taken into consideration. In this direction, the carbon footprint due to the electrification of the hand-held power tool industry needs to be examined in the preliminary design phase. In this paper, after defining the carbon footprint calculation framework, assumptions and simplifications used for the calculations, a direct comparison of the total carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions of three equivalent power and range powertrain systems - a combustion-driven, a hybrid-driven, and a cordless electric-driven - is presented.

Hydrogen Hybrid ICE Powertrains with Ultra-Low NOx Emissions in Non-Road Mobile Machinery

In this paper, we will show the potentials of reducing NOx emissions of an H2-ICE to an ultra-low level by hybridizing the H2-ICE in an NRMM powertrain. Real-world measurement data of NRMM together with a simulated hybrid powertrain and operating strategy form the input data for the H2-ICE on the test bench. We have modified a turbocharged four-cylinder in-line gasoline engine for use with directly injected hydrogen. Within several iteration loops, we obtained measurement data that shows that, depending on the operating strategy, ultra-low NOx emissions are reachable. The combination of hybridization, which implies the possibility of recuperation, and the CO2 emission-free H2-ICE leads to a highly efficient, robust, and economic drivetrain with the lowest emissions, perfectly suitable for Non-Road Machinery. Additionally, we will discuss the overall coupled measurement and simulation setup and the reachable NOx emission levels in our tested setup.

Design of a Laboratory Sampling System for Brake Wear Particle Measurements

Brake wear is one of the dominant sources of traffic-related particulate matter emissions and is associated with various adverse environmental and health hazards. To address this issue, the UNECE mandated the Particle Measurement Program to develop a harmonized methodology for sampling and measuring brake wear particles with a full-flow sampling tunnel on a brake dynamometer. Here we present the design of a novel, fully PMP compliant sampling tunnel. The dimensions and general layout of the tunnel are based on minimization of super-micron particle losses and consideration of space limitations in brake-dynamometer setups as well as the need for efficient utilization of the test facilities (reduced testing times). Numerical calculations suggested that the critical section of the system is the sampling train from the sample probes to the instrumentation inlet/filter holder.

Measuring Brake Wear Particles with a Real-Driving Emissions Sampling System on a Brake Dynamometer

Brake wear particles are recognized as one of the dominant sources of road transport particulate matter emissions and are linked to adverse health effects and environmental impact. The UNECE mandated the Particle Measurement Program to address this issue, by developing a harmonized sampling and measurement methodology for the investigation of brake wear particles on a brake dynamometer (dyno). However, although the brake dyno approach with tightly controlled test conditions offers good reproducibility, a multitude of changing vehicle and surrounding conditions make real-driving emissions measurement a highly relevant task. Here we show two different prototypes for on-road particle measurement with minimal impact of the measurement setup on the emission behavior, tested on a brake dyno.

Impact of 3-way catalytic converters on particulate emission of MPFI motorcycle engines

Due to climatic movements and politics, there is no doubt that a stricter emission legislation will soon face the two-wheeler sector and their manufacturers with new challenges. Additional to the already limited pollutants, a limitation of particulate number will probably also be introduced, which means that there is an urgent need for action in exhaust gas after treatment and particulate reduction systems. For natural aspirated, port injected engines, as used in two-wheeler-technologies, conventional systems already established in passenger cars are not necessarily applicable. Moreover, the emission spectrum is fundamentally different from passenger car engines due to the better homogenization of they typically used MPFI engine types. Adapting conventional particulate filter technologies to the finer particles of MPFI engines would result in a disproportionately larger exhaust backpressure.

Estimation of Diesel Soot Particles in Exhaust Gas Emission and Its Accumulation in Diesel Particulate Filter Using Graphical Calculation Model

To avoid frequent regeneration intervals leading to expeditious ageing of the catalyst and substantial fuel penalty for the owner, it is always desired to estimate the soot coming from diesel exhaust emission, the soot accumulated and burnt in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Certain applications and vehicle duty cycles cannot make use of the differential pressure sensor for estimating the soot loading in the DPF because of the limitations of the sensor tolerance and measurement accuracy. The physical soot model is always active and hence a precise and more accurate model is preferred to calibrate & optimize the regeneration interval. This paper presents the approach to estimate the engine-out soot and the accumulated soot in the DPF using a graphical calculation tool (AVL Concerto CalcGraf™).

Measurement Approaches for Variable Compression Ratio Systems

In the ongoing competition of powertrain concepts the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) will also have to demonstrate its potential for increased efficiency [1]. Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) Systems for Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) can make an important contribution to meeting stringent global fuel economy and CO2 standards. Using such technology a CO2 reduction of between 5% and 9% in the World Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (WLTC) are achievable, depending on vehicle class, load profile and power rating [2]. This paper provides a detailed description of the measurement approaches that are used during development of the AVL Dual Mode VCSTM and other VCR systems in fired operation. Results obtained from these measurements are typically used to calibrate or verify simulation models, which themselves are an integral part of the development of these systems [3].

Active Limitation of Tire Wear and Emissions for Electrified Vehicles

Eliminating toxic exhaust emissions, amongst them particulate matter (PM), is one of the driving factors behind the increasing use of electrified vehicles. However, it is frequently overseen that PM arise not only from combustion, but from non-exhaust traffic related causes as well; in particular from the vehicle brakes, tires and the road surface. Furthermore, as electrified vehicles weigh more and typically exhibit higher torques at low speeds, their non-exhaust emissions tend to be higher than for comparable conventional vehicles, especially those generated by tires. Fortunately, tire related emissions are directly related to tire wear, so that limiting tire wear can reduce these emissions as well. This can be accomplished by intelligently modulating the vehicle torque profile in real time, to limit the operation in conditions of higher tire wear.

Legislative regulations and international agreements like the Paris Agreement have been prepared to enforce the effort to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Greater environmental awareness among customers and introduction of strict environmental regulations have challenged designers to consider the environmental impact of products together with traditional design objectives in the early stages of product design. An important environmental impact factor is the carbon footprint of a product because carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a main cause of the global climate change. An early assessment of the product carbon footprint is beneficial because at this stage, design changes are still possible with little effort and at low cost. Actually, there is no detailed methodology for a CO2 impact estimation in the early design phases available and very few researches have been conducted for the special segment of small powertrains.

Comparison of Particulate Matter and Number Emissions from a Floating and a Fixed Caliper Brake System of the Same Lining Formulation

The particulate emissions of two brake systems were characterized in a dilution tunnel optimized for PM10 measurements. The larger of them employed a fixed caliper (FXC) and the smaller one a floating caliper (FLC). Both used ECE brake pads of the same lining formulation. Measured properties included gravimetric PM2.5 and PM10, Particle Number (PN) concentrations of both untreated and thermally treated (according to exhaust PN regulation) particles using Condensation Particle Counters (CPCs) having 23 and 10 nm cut-off sizes, and an Optical Particle Sizer (OPS). The brakes were tested over a section (trip-10) novel test cycle developed from the database of the Worldwide harmonized Light-Duty vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). A series of trip-10 tests were performed starting from unconditioned pads, to characterize the evolution of emissions until their stabilization. Selected tests were also performed over a short version of the Los Angeles City Cycle.

Measuring Automotive Exhaust Particles Down to 10 nm

The latest generation of internal combustion engines may emit significant levels of sub-23 nm particles. The main objective of the Horizon 2020 “DownToTen” project was to develop a robust methodology and provide policy recommendations towards the particle number (PN) emissions measurements in the sub-23 nm region. In order to achieve this target, a new portable exhaust particle sampling system (PEPS) was developed, being capable of measuring exhaust particles down to at least 10 nm under real-world conditions. The main design target was to build a system that is compatible with current PMP requirements and is characterized by minimized losses in the sub-23 nm region, high robustness against artefacts and high flexibility in terms of different PN modes investigation, i.e. non-volatile, volatile and secondary particles.
