Sound Quality Evaluation on Noise Caused by Electric Power Steering Wheel Utilizing CNN based on Sound Metrics

This research aims presents the method classifying the noise source and evaluating the sound quality of the noise caused by operating of electric power steering wheel in an electric vehicle. The steering wheel has been operated by the motor drive by electric power and it called motor-driven electric power (MDPS) system. If the motor is attached to the steering column of the steering device, it is called C-MDPS system. The steering device of the C-MDPS system comprises of motor, bearings, steering column, steering wheel and worm shaft. Among these components the motor and bearings are main noise sources of C-MDPS system. When the steering wheel is operated in an electric vehicle, the operating noise of the steering device inside the vehicle is more annoying than that in a gasoline engine vehicle since the operating noise is not masked by engine noise. Defects in the C-MDPS system worsen the operating noise of the steering system.

Bushing Stiffness Optimization Method for NVH Improvement Using Blocked Force and Energy-Based Index in Suspension System

Reductions in powertrain noise have led to an increased proportion of road noise, prompting various studies aimed at mitigating it. Road excitation primarily traverses through the vehicle suspension system, necessitating careful optimization of the characteristics of bushings at connection points. However, optimizing at the vehicle assembly stage is both time-consuming and costly. Therefore, it is essential to proceed with optimization at the subsystem level using appropriate objective functions. In this study, the blocked force and energy-based index derived from complex power were used to optimize the NVH performance. Calculating the complex power in each bushing enables computing the power flow, thereby providing a basis for evaluating the NVH performance. Through stiffness injection, the frequency response functions (FRF) of the system can be predicted according to arbitrary changes in the bushing stiffness.

Adaptive Inverse Control of Vibration Exciter for Tracking Target Acceleration of a Car Subsystem

This research aims to develop an inverse control method capable of adaptively simulating dynamic models of car subsystems in the rig-test condition. Accurate simulation of the actual vibration conditions is one of the most crucial factors in realizing reliable rig-test platforms. However, most typical rig tests are conducted under simple random or harmonic sweep conditions. Moreover, the conventional test methods are hard to directly adapt to the actual vibration conditions when switching the dynamic characteristics of the subsystem in the rig test. In the present work, we developed an inverse controller to adaptively control the vibration exciter referring to the target vibration signal. An adaptive LMS filter, employed for the control algorithm, updated the filter weights in real time by referring to the target and the measured acceleration signals.

Broadband active noise control algorithms require high-performance so multi-channel control to ensure high performance, which results in very high computational power and expensive DSP. When the control filter update part need a huge computational power of the algorithm is separated and calculated by the server, it is possible to reduce cost by using a low-cost DSP in a local vehicle, and a performance improvement algorithm requiring a high computational power can be applied to the server. In order to achieve the above goal, this study analyzed the maximum delay time when communication speed is low and studied response measures to ensure data integrity at the receiving location considering situations where communication speed delay and data errors occur.

Development of Noise Diagnosis and Prediction Technology for Column-Based Electric Power Steering Systems Using Vehicle Controller Area Network Data

The steering system is a critical component for controlling a vehicle's direction. In the context of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles, where drivers may not always be actively holding the steering wheel, early detection of precursor noise signals is essential to prevent serious accidents resulting from the loss of steering system functionality. It is therefore imperative to develop a device capable of early detection and notification of steering system malfunctions. Therefore, the current study aimed to quantify the noise levels generated within the Column-based Electric Power Steering (C-EPS) system of a D-segment sedan. To this end, we measured the uniaxial acceleration in nine noise-generating areas while simultaneously collecting data from three Controller Area Network (CAN) sources that are directly related to steering operation.

A Study on Overcoming Unavailable Backward Driving and a New Fail-Safe Strategy for R-Gearless (P)HEV System

Recently, as part of the effort to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce costs for eco-friendly vehicles, the R-gearless system has been implemented in the TMED (P)HEV system. Due to the removal of the reverse gear, a distinct backward driving method needs to be developed, allowing the Electronic Motor (e-Motor) system to facilitate backward movement in the TMED (P)HEV system. However, the capability of backward driving with the e-Motor is limited because of partial failure in the high-voltage system of an R-gearless system. Thus, we demonstrate that it is possible to improve backward driving problems by applying a new fail-safe strategy. In the event of a high-voltage battery system failure, backward driving can be achieved using the e-Motor with constant voltage control by the Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG), as proposed in this study.

Application of Motor Load Emulation Techniques for EPB (Electric Parking Brake) System Tests

The EPB (Electric Parking Brake) system is divided into two parts based on VDA305-100 recommendation (German Association of the Automotive Industry, VDA). One part of the EPB system contains the parking brake actuator, caliper, and actuation logic (parking brake controller, PBC). The second part of the EPB system is called to the HOST which contains the EPB power electronics, necessary peripherals and controls the functions that the driver can experience. According to VDA305-100, the PBC is responsible for recognition of a fault in the parking brake actuator based on the measured values transmitted from the HOST such as EPB motor voltage and current. Due to mechanical fault injection limitations, failsafe tests require physically electrical emulation caused by parking brake actuator faults to verify the parking brake actuator fault detection and management algorithm.

Development and Simulation Validation of a Wheel/Tire Selective-Matching Algorithm Considering an Error Function of Wheel Runout Measuring Equipment

In this study, a novel selective matching logic for a wheel/tire is proposed, to decrease the vehicle driving vibration caused by wheel/tire non-uniformity. The new logic was validated through matching simulation/in-line matching evaluation. A theoretical radial force variation model was established by considering the theoretical model of the existing references and the wheel/tire assembly mechanism. The model was validated with ZF’s high-speed uniformity equipment, which is standard in the tire industry. The validity of the new matching logic was verified through matching simulation and mass production in-line evaluation. In conclusion, the novel logic presented herein was demonstrated to effectively decrease the radial force variation caused by the wheel/tire.

Analysis of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Fan-Type Wheels

This research addresses the pressing need for reducing vehicle aerodynamic resistance, with a specific focus on mitigating wheel and tire resistance, which constitutes approximately 25% of the overall vehicle drag. While the prevailing method for reducing resistance in mass production development involves wheel opening reduction, it inadvertently increases wheel weight and has adverse effects on brake cooling performance. To overcome these challenges, novel complementary resistance reduction methods that can be employed in conjunction with an appropriate degree of wheel opening reduction are imperative. In this study, we introduce symmetrical wheels with a fan-like shape as a solution. The fan configuration influences the surrounding flow by either drawing it in or pushing it out, depending on the direction of rotation. Application of these fan-type wheels to a vehicle's wheels results in the redirection of flow inwards or outwards during high-speed driving due to wheel rotation.

Development and optimization of jet impingement on dimpled plate for maximizing cooling performance of an inverter

A need to develop a cooling method with high cooling performance like jet impingement is increased as high power of an inverter is required. Jet Impingement on the dimpled plate would increase thermal performance than that of flat plate. Many previous researchers have dealt with the multi jet impingement on flat plate and some results of the study on dimpled plate evaluate the effect on heat transfer coefficients on several limited cases, making it difficult to apply them to inverter designs. Therefore, in this paper, heat transfer performance, pressure drop, and robustness at micro-scale of jet impingement on the dimpled plate were investigated in detail and the correlations of each performance were proposed. Finally, the optimal design was presented. The cooling performance was influenced by the jet array and the effect of depth and width of the dimples.

As data science technologies are being widely applied on various industries, the importance of data itself increased. A typical manufacturer company has a vast data set of products as 2D&3D drawing formats, but a common problem was that building a database from the 2D&3D drawings costs much, and it is hard to update the database after it once built. Also, it is high-cost job when the new factor researched and necessary to investigate the new factors on previously fixed or uploaded drawings. As new products are developed with time, these problems are getting more difficult. In this paper, an automated database building method using CATIA introduced and future probabilities are suggested. An aluminum wheel part was used as an example. An automated logic used CATIA V5’s VBA functions and was handled by python programming language.

A Study on Development of Brake System Using 1-D Simulation

The development trend of new vehicles is to shorten the development period, diversify the models, and produce small amounts compared to the past. The current development process of braking systems is difficult to meet recent development trends, and it is more difficult to shorten the development period in the verification process that requires actual products. In this paper, we developed a 1-D Simulation of AMESim, MATLAB/Simulink Co-Simulation model of Hyundai Mobis iMEB(Integrated Mobis Electronic Brake) system for eco-friendly vehicles. If hydraulic braking is applied more than the tire grip force during braking, tire slip occurs, and if the rear wheel is locked before the front wheel, stability is lost, so it is advantageous to decide design parameter of brake system to make the front wheel first locked in consideration of design parameters of each vehicle.

Developing EPB Analytic Model Based on Multi-Flexible Body Dynamics

The current braking system of a vehicle includes a parking braking system, which consists of a Motor on Caliper (MOC) that generates hydraulic main braking and electric parking braking through a caliper structure. When designing the MOC braking system, it is important to consider an analytical model that can predict the performance of the parking clamping force and the torque generated between the disk and caliper interactions. However, in previous designs, system predictions were often based on simplified structural calculations or incomplete Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. In this paper, a study was conducted to predict the system performance using Multi-flexible Body Dynamics (MFBD) analysis. Firstly, a kinematic model (MBD) was developed for the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system currently used in mass-produced vehicles. And the MBD model which based on kinematics was the initial model for this study.

Diagnosis and Prognosis of Chassis Systems in Autonomous Driving Conditions

Expanding various future mobilities such as purpose built vehicle (PBV), urban air mobility (UAM), and robo-taxi, the application of autonomous driving system (ADS) technology is also spreading. The main point of ADS is to ensure safety by monitoring vehicle anomalies to prevent functional failure or accident. In this study, a model-based diagnosis and prognosis process was established using degradation data generated during autonomous driving simulation. A vehicle model was designed using Modelica/Dymola, and autonomous driving simulation was performed by integrating the lane keeping assistant (LKA) system with the vehicle model using Matlab/Simulink. Degradation data for the 3 components (a shock absorber damper, a suspension bush, and a tire) of the chassis system were input into the integrated simulation model. The degradation behavior was monitored with K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) and Gaussian mixture model (GMM).

Development of Truck Platooning System Including Emergency Braking Function with Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) Testing

Platoon is a system that connects vehicles through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology to maintain a short distance between vehicles while driving on the road. To improve fuel efficiency, many automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are interested in developing and demonstrating real-world platoon system. However, it is hard for heavy duty trucks to develop this system due to the difficulty of maintaining the targeted intervehicle distance not only for fuel efficiency but also for safety in case of emergency braking. Because of this critical safety issue in the emergency situation, the platoon system for heavy duty trucks can be hardly demonstrated or tested in real vehicle environment. The relatively complex system and the slow response characteristic of commercial vehicles makes this even more difficult.

Driver Mental Stress in Response to Thermal Stress Change during Highway Driving

Monitoring driver thermal stress is an integral step for developing an automated climate control function. In this experimental study, various physiological measures for driver’s thermal stress were tracked while intentionally by altering thermal conditions of the seat with a seat air conditioning system (ACS) in summer and a seat heating system (HS) in winter. It was aimed to determine reliable physiological measures for identifying the changes in thermal status induced by the two seat climate control systems. In the first experiment, twenty experienced drivers drove a comfortable sedan for 60 minutes on a real highway while varying the intensity of the seat ACS every 10 minutes to incur ‘hot’ – ‘cool’ – ‘hot’ – ‘cool’ thermal stress. In the second experiment, a new group of eighteen drivers drove the same highway for 30 minutes while increasing the intensity of seat HS to incur ‘cold’ to ‘warm’ thermal stress.

A Physics Based Methodology for the Estimation of Tire Performance on Ice and Snow

The automotive industry’s journey towards fully autonomous vehicles brings more and more vehicle control systems. Additionally, the reliability and robustness of all these systems must be guaranteed for all road and weather conditions before release into the market. However, the ever-increasing number of such control systems, in combination with the number of road and weather conditions, makes it unfeasible to test all scenarios in real life. Thus, the performance and robustness of these systems needs to be proven virtually, via vehicle simulations. The key challenge for performing such a range of simulations is that the tire performance is significantly affected by the road/weather conditions. An end user must therefore have access to the corresponding tire models. The current solution is to test tires under all road surfaces and operating conditions and then derive a set of model parameters from measurements.

The history of the brake system for the passenger vehicles is no shorter than that of the automobile itself. With the long history, its performance, efficiency and reliability have been dramatically improved and as a result, even leading brake system suppliers now find it very difficult to come up with breakthrough ideas for further optimization of the current brake systems. In addition, as the powertrain of the vehicles has also been improved, the requirements of the brake system have become much more severe than before, leading to a trend of increasing the system size and weight especially for the parts belong to unsprung mass. In the case of high-end vehicles, the system was further optimized using expensive materials such as ceramic, carbon-fiber, etc. However, most normal vehicles have been developed without any significant changes in the existing systems. This decade-long trend of developing braking parts has seen a big change “electrification of the vehicle”.

Enhancing Meta Model of the Brake Pad Friction Coefficient Using the Explainable Machine Learning

Recently, increasing system complexity and various customer demands result in the need for highly efficient vehicle development processes. Once the brake torque is predicted accurately during the driving scenario in the earlier stage, it will be able to prevent the changing the vehicle or brake system design to satisfy the legal regulation and customer requirement. As brake torque performance target allocate brake pad friction coefficient level and characteristic, the accurate friction coefficient prediction should be preceded for accurate prediction for brake torque. Generally, the friction coefficient of the brake pad is known to vary nonlinearly depending on the physical properties of the disc and the pad, as well as the brake disc rotational speed, the disc temperature, and the hydraulic pressure. Furthermore, it varies depending on the driving scenario even when other conditions are the same. Therefore, it is necessary to apply new methods to solve these challenges.

Brake Pad Wear Monitor using MOC (Motor on Caliper) EPB ECU

With the spread of new trends such as autonomous driving and vehicle subscription service, drivers may pay less attention to the maintenance of the vehicle. Brake pads being safety critical components, the wear condition of all service brakes is required by regulation to be indicated by either acoustic of optical devices or a means of visually checking the degree of brake lining wear [1]. Current application of the wear indicator in the market uses either sound generating metal strip or wire harness based pad wear sensor. The former is not effective in generating clear alarm to the driver, and the latter is not cost effective, and there is a need for more effective and low cost solution. In this paper, a pad wear monitoring system using MOC(Motor On Caliper) EPB(Electric Parking Brake) ECU is proposed. An MOC EPB is equipped with a motor, geartrain and an ECU. The motor current when applying the parking brake is influenced by the mechanical load at the brake pad side of the system.
