Numerical Investigation on the Design and Development of Automotive Exhaust Muffler –A Case Study

Attaining better acoustic performance and back-pressure is a continuous research area in the design and development of passenger vehicle exhaust system. Design parameters such as tail pipe, resonator, internal pipes and baffles, muffler dimensions, number of flow reversals, perforated holes size and number etc. govern the muffler design. However, the analysis on the flow directivity from tail pipe is limited. A case study is demonstrated in this work on the development of automotive muffler with due consideration of back pressure and flow directivity from tail pipe. CFD methodology is engaged to evaluate the back pressure of different muffler configurations. The experimental and numerical results of backpressure have been validated. The numerical results are in close agreement with experimental results.

A Parametric Approach of IP Duct Vane Articulation Study for Enhanced Cabin Cool Down Performance

The cabin cool down performance is influenced by heat load, AC system components and Air handling components. The air handling components are AC duct, vane and vent. Design of AC duct vane plays a crucial role in the airflow directivity in cabin which enhances the cabin cool down performance. Simulations are carried out by rotating the vanes manually and requires post process for every iteration. It leads to more time consuming and more number of simulations to achieve the target value. Research articles focusing on automation and optimization of vane articulation studies are scanty. Thus, the objective of this work is to execute the vane articulation study with less manual intervention. A parametric approach is developed by integrating ANSA and ANSYS FLUENT tools. With Direct Fit Morphing and DoE study approach from ANSA delivers the surface mesh model for the different vane angle configurations.

Aerodynamic Performance Assessment on Typical SUV Car Model by On-Road Surface Pressure Mapping Method

Aerodynamics of on-road vehicles has come to the limelight in the recent years. Better aerodynamic design of vehicle would improve vehicle fuel efficiency with increased acceleration performance. To obtain best aerodynamic body, the series of design modifications and different testing methodologies must be involved in vehicle design and validation phase. Wind tunnel aerodynamic force measurement, road load determination and computational fluid dynamics were the common methods used to evaluate the aerodynamic behavior of the vehicle body. As a novel approach, the present work discusses about the on-road (Real time) testing methodology that is aimed to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of vehicle body using surface pressure mapping. A 64-Channel digital pressure scanner has been utilized in this work for mapping the pressure at different locations of the typical vehicle body.

Air conditioning systems are one of the significant auxiliary loads on the vehicle powertrain. In an Electric Vehicle (EV) where the available energy is limited, it becomes crucial to optimize the overall energy consumption of the auxiliary loads. The major power consuming components in an automotive HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) are: Compressor, Cabin blower, Condenser cooling fan and the Control devices. Significant progress is already made in enhancing the energy efficiency of the above-mentioned power consuming components part of vehicle HVAC system. Alternate energy sources are being explored recently, to reduce the energy demand from vehicle. One such proposal is to harness the abundant solar energy available, through solar panels and consume this energy to supplement the power required for HVAC system components. Solar panels convert solar energy to electrical energy by the principle of the photovoltaic effect.

With the increase in the number of automobiles on road, there is a very strong emphasis on reducing the air pollution which led to evolution of stringent emission norms. To meet these stringent emission norms, the ideal solution is to optimize the engine hardware and the combustion system to reduce the emission at source thereby reducing the dependency on exhaust after treatment system. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines are gaining popularity worldwide as they provide a balance between fun to drive and fuel efficiency. Controlling the particle emissions especially Particle Number (PN) is a challenge in GDI engines due to the nature of its combustion system. In this study, experiments were performed on a 1.2Litre 3-cylinder 250bar GDI engine to capture the effect of injection strategies on PN.

Challenges in Performing DPF Regeneration in Indian Driving Conditions for Meeting BS6 Emission

The present study investigates the challenges on performing the on-road regeneration process in Indian road conditions for meeting BS6 emission. There are different types (DPF and SCR) of aftertreatment systems used for meeting BS6 emission. In which, active regeneration (on-road demand) is used to burn the particulate matter accumulated in the diesel particulate filter (DPF). This process must be performed frequently in order to prevent DPF system from over soot loading which leads to damage the DPF. This process is dependent on exhaust temperature, flow of exhaust and availability of oxygen etc. As we know, Indian roads are different from other countries such as European countries. The abnormal soot loading and frequent regeneration lead to many concerns such as oil dilution, performance of the engine and life of DPF system etc.

1D Simulation-Based Methodology for Automotive Grill Opening Area Optimization

This paper discusses the methodology setup for grill opening area prediction at the early development phase of the product development lifecycle, using a commercially available 1D simulation tool- AMESIM. Representative under hood has been modeled using Grill, Condenser, Radiator, intercooler, fan, and engine components. Vehicle velocity is used as an input to derive the airflow passing through the grill and other under-hood components based on ram air coefficient, pressure drop through different components (Grill, Heat exchanger, Fan & Engine). This airflow is used to predict the top tank temperature of the radiator. Derived airflow is correlated with airflow obtained from CFD simulation. A balance has been achieved between cooling drag & fan power consumption at different grill opening areas for target top tank temperature. Top tank temperature has been predicted at two different extreme engine heat rejection operating points.

A CFD Simulation Approach for Optimizing Front Air-Dam to Improve Aerodynamic Drag of a Vehicle

The front air-dam diverts the airflow flowing through the underbody, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag. The height, shape and position of air-dam must be optimized to get improved drag. Extensive iterations are carried out to finalize the front air-dam size and position until the target is achieved. Researchers used to study the effect of air-dam height, then with fixed height will work to finalize position. Studies with interactive effect of front air-dam height and position are scanty. The existing process is time consuming as the front air-dam size and position is adjusted manually and simulation is being performed for each design and requires detailed analysis for all design iterations. The objective of this study is to couple CFD solver with design optimization software to reduce overall manual design iterations to choose the effective front air-dam geometry.

Digital Automotive AC Pulldown Prediction in a Real Driving Condition

Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are always striving to deliver fast Air-Conditioning (AC) pulldown performance with consistent distribution of cabin temperature to meet customer expectations. The ultimate test is the OEM standard, called “AC Pull Down,” conducted at high ambient temperature and solar load conditions with a prescribed vehicle drive cycle. To determine whether the AC system in the vehicle has the capacity to cool the cabin, throughout the drive cycle test, cabin temperature measurements are evaluated against the vehicle target. If the measured cabin temperatures are equal or lower than the required temperatures, the AC system is deemed conventional for customer usage. In this paper, numerical predictions of the cabin temperatures to replicate the AC pulldown test are presented. The AC pulldown scenario is carried out in a digital Climatic Wind Tunnel simulation. The solution used in this study is based on a coupled approach.

Optimization of IP Duct Vane Articulation for Improved Cabin Airflow Directivity

The air velocity achieved at driver and passenger aim point is one of the key parameters to evaluate the automotive air-conditioning system performance. The design of duct, vent and vanes has a major contribution in the cabin air flow directivity. However, visual appearance of vent and vane receives higher priority in design because of market demand than their performance. More iterations are carried out to finalize the HVAC duct assembly until the target velocity is achieved. The objective of this study is to develop an automated process for vane articulation study along with predicting the optimized velocity at driver and passengers. The automated simulation of vane articulation study is carried out using STAR-CCM+ and SHERPA optimization algorithm which is available in HEEDS tool. The minimum and maximum vane angle are defined as parameters and face level velocity is defined as response.

Reduction of Emissions and Noise Variations by Adjustment of Fuel Injection Quantity

Fuel injection system is a very sensitive structure deciding the optimum quantity of fuel to be injected for combustion process with acceptable accuracy. Learning of fuel quantity with respect to injection type, duration, number of injections requires proper correction values in order to reduce the variation which would result in dissimilar emissions and performance. Deviation of injection quantities are inevitable due to the variations in production tolerance of the injectors. This study focuses on the maximum reduction in fuel quantity which avoids deviation of soot emissions with three different sets of injectors statistically deviating from the ideal pilot fuel quantity. Three sets of injectors deviating from the mean value were chosen and named as Min sample, Mean sample and Max sample. Min sample was with lower injection quantity than the actual and max sample was with higher injection quantity than actual quantity.

Tractors in the field are exposed to adverse operating conditions and are surrounded by dust and dirt. The tiny, thin and sharp broken straw and husks surround the system in reaper operation. The tractors which are equipped with air conditioning system tend to show detrimental effects in cooling performance. The compressor trips frequently by excess pressure developed in the system due to condenser clogging and hence cooling performance is reduced considerably. The air conditioning performance reduces due to the clogged condenser located on the top roof compartment of operator’s cabin, which is better design than keeping in front of radiator where clogging happens every hour and customer need to stop the tractor to clean it with specific blower.

Emission and Noise Optimization of CRDe Engine with Pilot Injection Strategies

The combustion strategies play a key role in emission improvisation and noise reduction on diesel engines equipped for higher emission norus. This paper clearly discussed on the selection of various operating points for optimization and employing of proper calibration strategies like pilot strategy, Main injection timing, EGR type and rail pressure variation for best emission and noise output. Various optimization techniques have been implemented in our study. Since the pilot injection quantity as well as timing are varied in our paper, careful matrix formulation is required to determine the best optimum point. Around 340 points were obtained on varying pilot quantity and pilot separation sweep chosen at single engine speed and load for both the pilots. Out of the above points, 5 sensitive points were selected ensuring the sensitivity of the emissions and noise.

Optimized In Cylinder NOx Reduction Strategy for Meeting BSVI Emission Limits

The tough emission limits of BSVI norms with very low levels of NOx and PM emissions presents major techno economic challenges for the automobile industry. Combined efforts of pollutants reduction by combustion modification as well as the exhaust after treatment devices could only facilitate to achieve the desired emission targets. selective catalytic reduction technology is a mandatory system which uses ammonia from the aqueous urea solution to react with NOx forming nontoxic by products. The cost spent on aqueous urea solution in addition to the cost of BSVI diesel encounters high operating cost for the vehicle. NOx reduction by SCR too requires adequate quantity of ammonia from the AdBlue. Hence sensible utilization of DEF is essential for reduced running cost of the SCR system. SCR efficiency is higher for higher exhaust temperature and it requires minimum exhaust temperature above which only it operates.

Prediction of Oil Flow inside Tractor Transmission for Splash Type Lubrication

This study introduces a method to examine the flow path of the lubricant inside a transmission housing of a tractor. A typical gearbox has several loads bearing elements which are in relative sliding motion to each other which causes heat to be released. The major sources of friction as well as heat are the meshing teeth between gears (sun/planet, planet/ring & power/range drive gear), thrust washers, thrust bearings and needle roller bearings. The churning of oil performs the vital function of both lubricating these sliding interfaces and cooling these sources of heat, thereby preventing failure of the gearbox. In this paper, we have applied VOF multiphase flow model and sliding meshing to simulate the fluid flow during splashed lubrication within a mating gear box. Lubrication oil dynamics and oil surface interaction with the air is modeled using VOF multiphase approach.

Diesel Engines are known for its low fuel consumption coupled with high specific power output. Downsizing the engines with turbocharging and common rail injection technologies are the recent trends in improving the efficiency and performance of diesel engines. It is very challenging to match the torque targets at low speed and power targets at high speed range of a diesel engines due to system hardware limitation. Torque at lower engine speed will improve a greater extent to the drivability of a vehicle. Formation of black smoke is a major problem in lower engine speeds due lack of air availability. The use of variable geometry, two stage turbocharging and four valves per cylinder are some of the solutions which make the task simpler, also involves additional cost and fundamental design changes. At the same time commonly used waste gate turbocharger for boosting the airflow, fails to deliver required air flow at lower engine speeds.

Factors affecting Regeneration interval of a Diesel Particulate Filter and their influence on BSV emission application

With the implementation of stringent PM emission norms in various countries for diesel vehicles, the legislation demands a PM mass limit as low as 4.5mg/km in the NEDC cycle, starting from Euro5. This makes the usage of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) mandatory. The same is going to be mandated for upcoming BSV emission norms in India. Thus it becomes imperative to know the functional aspects of a DPF and their impacts. Basically there are two major functions of a DPF- Soot mass filtration and Soot burning or Regeneration. This paper highlights usage of DPF in Indian context from the perspective of one of the major aspects of DPF regeneration-Regeneration Interval, which is basically governed by vehicle/engine out smoke. Regeneration interval also has direct or indirect influence on life of engine of a vehicle and average fuel economy of a vehicle which will also be touched upon herein.
