Analyzing the Expense: Cost Modeling for State-of-the-Art Electric Vehicle Battery Packs

The Battery Performance and Cost Model (BatPaC), developed by Argonne National Laboratory, is a versatile tool designed for lithium-ion battery (LIB) pack engineering. It accommodates user-defined specifications, generating detailed bill-of-materials calculations and insights into cell dimensions and pack characteristics. Pre-loaded with default data sets, BatPaC aids in estimating production costs for battery packs produced at scale (5 to 50 GWh annually). Acknowledging inherent uncertainties in parameters, the tool remains accessible and valuable for designers and engineers. BatPaC plays a crucial role in National Highway Transportation Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulatory assessments, providing estimated battery pack manufacturing costs and weight metrics for electric vehicles. Integrated with Argonne's Autonomie simulations, BatPaC streamlines large-scale processes, replacing traditional models with lookup tables.

Quantifying the Costs of Charger Availability Uncertainty for Residents of Multi-Unit Dwellings

Even when charging at the highest rates currently available, Electric Vehicles (EVs) add range at substantially lower rates than Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICVs) do while fueling. In addition, DC charging comes at a cost premium and leads to accelerated battery degradation. EV users able to rely on AC charging during long dwells at home or work may experience cost and time savings relative to ICV users with similar driving patterns. However, EV users unable to charge during long dwells will face higher charging costs and higher dedicated charging time. An important question is how occupants of Multi-Unit Dwellings (MUDs), which provide some AC Electric Vehicle Supply Infrastructure (EVSE) but not enough for all cars to charge at once, will be effected. In this paper the authors’ previously published method for quantifying EV user inconvenience due to charging is extended to deal with stochastic charger availability.

Energy Savings Impact of Eco-Driving Control Based on Powertrain Characteristics in Connected and Automated Vehicles: On-Track Demonstrations

This research investigates the energy savings achieved through eco-driving controls in connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), with a specific focus on the influence of powertrain characteristics. Eco-driving strategies have emerged as a promising approach to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in CAVs. However, uncertainty remains about how the optimal strategy developed for a specific CAV applies to CAVs with different powertrain technologies, particularly concerning energy aspects. To address this gap, on-track demonstrations were conducted using a Chrysler Pacifica CAV equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE), advanced sensors, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems, compared with another CAV, a previously studied Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV) equipped with an electric motor and battery.

Computational Investigation of Hydrogen-Air Mixing in a Large-Bore Locomotive Dual Fuel Engine

The internal combustion engine (ICE) has long dominated the heavy-duty sector by using liquid fossil fuels such as diesel but global commitments by countries and OEMs to reduce lifecycle carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has garnered interest in alternative fuels like hydrogen. Hydrogen is a unique gaseous fuel that contains zero carbon atoms and has desired thermodynamic properties of high energy density per unit mass and high flame speeds. However, there are challenges related to its adoption to the heavy-duty sector as a drop-in fuel replacement for compression ignition (CI) diesel combustion given its high autoignition resistance. To overcome this fundamental barrier, engine manufacturers are exploring dual fuel combustion engines by substituting a fraction of the diesel fuel with hydrogen which enables fuel flexibility when there is no infrastructure and retrofittability to existing platforms.

Trucking Forward: Intrusion Detection for SAE J1708/J1587 Networks in Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Automotive researchers and industry experts have extensively documented vulnerabilities arising from unauthorized in-vehicle communication through academic research, industry investigations, sponsored events, and learnings from real-world attacks. While current cybersecurity endeavors in the heavy-duty (HD) vehicle space focus on securing conventional communication technologies such as the controller area network (CAN), there is a notable deficiency in defensive research concerning legacy technologies, particularly those utilized between trucks and trailers. In fact, state-of-the-art attacks on these systems have only come to public attention through official disclosures and public presentations as recently as 2020. To address these risks, this paper introduces a system-wide security concept called Legacy Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) for heavy-duty vehicle applications utilizing the SAE J1708/J1587 protocol stack.

Measurement of Liquid Fuel Film Attached to the Wall in a Port Fueled SI Gasoline Engine

Liquid fuel attached to the wall surface of the intake port, the piston and the combustion chamber is one of the main causes of the unburned hydrocarbon emissions from a port fueled SI engine, especially during transient operations. To investigate the liquid fuel film formation process and fuel film behavior during transient operation is essential to reduce exhaust emissions in real driving operations, including cold start operations. Optical techniques have been often applied to measure the fuel film in conventional reports, however, it is difficult to apply those previous techniques to actual engines during transient operations. In this study, using MEMS technique, a novel capacitance sensor has been developed to detect liquid fuel film formation and evaporation processes in actual engines. A resistance temperature detector (RTD) was also constructed on the MEMS sensor with the capacitance sensor to measure the sensor surface temperature.

Infrared High-Speed Thermography of Combustion Chamber Wall Impinged by Diesel Spray Flame

As a new method to examine the extremely unsteady and spatially varying wall heat transfer phenomena on diesel engine combustion chamber wall, high-speed imaging of infrared thermal radiation from the chromium coated window surface impinged by a diesel spray flame has been conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber. The infrared radiation from a back surface of the chromium layer was successfully visualized at 10kHz frame rate and 128 × 128 pixel resolution through the window. The distributions of infrared radiation, temperature and heat flux exhibited coherent and streaky structure with radial stripes extending and waving from a stagnation point likely reflecting the near-wall turbulent structure in a wall impinging diesel flame. The experiments were conducted with various parameters such as fuel injection pressure, ambient gas oxygen concentration, wall impinging distance, wall surface roughness and wall materials.

Transmission Shifting Analysis and Model Validation for Medium Duty Vehicles

Over the past couple of years, Argonne National Laboratory has tested, analyzed, and validated automobile models for the light duty vehicle class, including several types of powertrains including conventional, hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles. Argonne’s previous works focused on the light duty vehicle models, but no work has been done on medium and heavy-duty vehicles. This study focuses on the validation of shifting control in advanced automatic transmission technologies for medium duty vehicles by using Argonne’s model-based high-fidelity, forward-looking, vehicle simulation tool, Autonomie. Different medium duty vehicles, from Argonne’s own fleet, including the Ram 2500, Ford F-250 and Ford F-350, were tested with the equipment for OBD (on-board diagnostics) signal data record. For the medium duty vehicles, a workflow process was used to import test data.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), like many other alternative fuels, has witnessed increased adoption in the last decade, and its use is projected to rise as stricter emissions regulations continue to be applied. However, much of its use is limited to dual fuel applications, gaseous phase injection, light-duty passenger vehicle applications, or scenarios that require conversion from gasoline engines. Therefore, to address these limitations and discover the most efficient means of harnessing its full potential, more research is required in the development of optimized fuel injection equipment for liquid port and direct injection, along with the implementation of advanced combustion strategies that will improve its thermal efficiency to the levels of conventional fuels.

Innovative Piston Design Performance for High Efficiency Stoichiometric Heavy Duty Natural Gas Engine

Internal combustion engines will continue to be the leading power-train in the heavy-duty, on-highway sector as technologies like hydrogen, fuel cells, and electrification face challenges. Natural gas (NG) engines offer several advantages over diesel engines including near zero particle matter (PM) emissions, lower NOx emissions, lower capital and operating costs, availability of vast domestic NG resources, and lower CO2 emissions being the cleanest burning of all hydrocarbons (HC). The main limitation of this type of engine is the lower efficiency compared to diesel counterparts. Addressing the limitations (knock and misfire) for achieving diesel-like efficiencies is key to accomplishing widespread adoption, especially for the US market. With the aim to achieve high brake thermal efficiency (BTE), three (3) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) optimized pistons with three different compression ratios (CR) have been tested.

HIL Demonstration of Energy Management Strategy for Real World Extreme Fast Charging Stations with Local Battery Energy Storage Systems

Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) infrastructure is crucial for an increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. However, an unmanaged implementation may lead to negative grid impacts and huge power costs. This paper presents an optimal energy management strategy to utilize grid-connected Energy Storage Systems (ESS) integrated with XFC stations to mitigate these grid impacts and peak demand charges. To achieve this goal, an algorithm that controls the charge and discharge of ESS based on an optimal power threshold is developed. The optimal power threshold is determined to carry out maximum peak shaving for given battery size and SOC constraints.

Vehicle Diagnostics Adapter Cybersecurity Concerns with Wireless Connectivity

Maintaining and diagnosing vehicle systems often involves a technician connecting a service computer to the vehicle diagnostic port through a vehicle diagnostics adapter (VDA). This creates a connection from the service software to the vehicle network through a protocol adapter. Often, the protocols for the personal computer (PC) hosted diagnostic programs use USB, and the diagnostic port provides access to the controller area network (CAN). However, the PC can also communicate to the VDA via WiFi or Bluetooth. There may be scenarios where these wireless interfaces are not appropriate, such as maintaining military vehicles. As such, a method to defeature the wireless capabilities of a typical vehicle diagnostic adapter is demonstrated without access to the source code or modifying the hardware. The process of understanding the vehicle diagnostic adapter system, its hardware components, the firmware for the main processor and subsystems, and the update mechanism is explored.

Road Snow Coverage Estimation Using Camera and Weather Infrastructure Sensor Inputs

Modern vehicles use automated driving assistance systems (ADAS) products to automate certain aspects of driving, which improves operational safety. In the U.S. in 2020, 38,824 fatalities occurred due to automotive accidents, and typically about 25% of these are associated with inclement weather. ADAS features have been shown to reduce potential collisions by up to 21%, thus reducing overall accidents. But ADAS typically utilize camera sensors that rely on lane visibility and the absence of obstructions in order to function, rendering them ineffective in inclement weather. To address this research gap, we propose a new technique to estimate snow coverage so that existing and new ADAS features can be used during inclement weather. In this study, we use a single camera sensor and historical weather data to estimate snow coverage on the road. Camera data was collected over 6 miles of arterial roadways in Kalamazoo, MI.

Quantitative Resilience Assessment of GPS, IMU, and LiDAR Sensor Fusion for Vehicle Localization Using Resilience Engineering Theory

Practical applications of recently developed sensor fusion algorithms perform poorly in the real world due to a lack of proper evaluation during development. Existing evaluation metrics do not properly address a wide variety of testing scenarios. This issue can be addressed using proactive performance measurements such as the tools of resilience engineering theory rather than reactive performance measurements such as root mean square error. Resilience engineering is an established discipline for evaluating proactive performance on complex socio-technical systems which has been underutilized for automated vehicle development and evaluation. In this study, we use resilience engineering metrics to assess the performance of a sensor fusion algorithm for vehicle localization. A Kalman Filter is used to fuse GPS, IMU and LiDAR data for vehicle localization in the CARLA simulator.

Using Ethernet or a Wireless Harness and Named Data Networking in Autonomous Tractor-Trailer Communication

Autonomous truck and trailer configurations face challenges when operating in reverse due to the lack of sensing on the trailer. It is anticipated that sensor packages will be installed on existing trailers to extend autonomous operations while operating in reverse in uncontrolled environments, like a customer's loading dock. Power Line Communication (PLC) between the trailer and the tractor cannot support high bandwidth and low latency communication. This paper explores the impact of using Ethernet or a wireless medium for commercial trailer-tractor communication on the lifecycle and operation of trailer electronic control units (ECUs) from a Systems Engineering perspective to address system requirements, integration, and security. Additionally, content-based and host-based networking approaches for in-vehicle communication, such as Named Data Networking (NDN) and IP-based networking are compared.

Data Collection for Incident Response for Vehicles with Autonomous Systems

First responders and traffic crash investigators collect and secure evidence necessary to determine the cause of a crash. As vehicles with advanced autonomous features become more common on the road, inevitably they will be involved in such incidents. Thus, traditional data collection requirements may need to be augmented to accommodate autonomous technology and the connectivity associated with autonomous and semi-autonomous driving features. The objective of this paper is to understand the data from a fielded autonomous system and to motivate the development of requirements for autonomous vehicle data collection. The issue of data ownership and access will be discussed. Additional complicating factors, such as cybersecurity concerns combined with a first responder’s legal authority, may pose challenges for traditional data collection.

Automated Vehicle Perception Sensor Evaluation in Real-World Weather Conditions

Perception in adverse weather conditions is one of the most prominent challenges for automated driving features. The sensors used for mid-to-long range perception most impacted by weather (i.e., camera and LiDAR) are susceptible to data degradation, causing potential system failures. This research series aims to better understand sensor data degradation characteristics in real-world, dynamic environmental conditions, focusing on adverse weather. To achieve this, a dataset containing LiDAR (Velodyne VLP-16) and camera (Mako G-507) data was gathered under static scenarios using a single vehicle target to quantify the sensor detection performance. The relative position between the sensors and the target vehicle varied longitudinally and laterally. The longitudinal position was varied from 10m to 175m at 25m increments and the lateral position was adjusted by moving the sensor set angle between 0 degrees (left position), 4.5 degrees (center position), and 9 degrees (right position).

Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities for Off-Board Commercial Vehicle Diagnostics

The lack of inherent security controls makes traditional Controller Area Network (CAN) buses vulnerable to Machine-In-The-Middle (MitM) cybersecurity attacks. Conventional vehicular MitM attacks involve tampering with the hardware to directly manipulate CAN bus traffic. We show, however, that MitM attacks can be realized without direct tampering of any CAN hardware. Our demonstration leverages how diagnostic applications based on RP1210 are vulnerable to Machine-In-The-Middle attacks. Test results show SAE J1939 communications, including single frame and multi-framed broadcast and on-request messages, are susceptible to data manipulation attacks where a shim DLL is used as a Machine-In-The-Middle. The demonstration shows these attacks can manipulate data that may mislead vehicle operators into taking the wrong actions.

On-Track Demonstration of Automated Eco-Driving Control for an Electric Vehicle

This paper presents the energy savings of an automated driving control applied to an electric vehicle based on the on-track testing results. The control is a universal speed planner that analytically solves the eco-driving optimal control problem, within a receding horizon framework and coupled with trajectory tracking lower-level controls. The automated eco-driving control can take advantage of signal phase and timing (SPaT) provided by approaching traffic lights via vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. At each time step, the controller calculates the accelerator and brake pedal position (APP/BPP) based on the current state of the vehicle and the current and future information about the surrounding environment (e.g., speed limits, traffic light phase).

Mobility Energy Productivity Evaluation of Prediction-Based Vehicle Powertrain Control Combined with Optimal Traffic Management

Transportation vehicle and network system efficiency can be defined in two ways: 1) reduction of travel times across all the vehicles in the system, and 2) reduction in total energy consumed by all the vehicles in the system. The mechanisms to realize these efficiencies are treated as independent (i.e., vehicle and network domains) and, when combined, they have not been adequately studied to date. This research aims to integrate previously developed and published research on Predictive Optimal Energy Management Strategies (POEMS) and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS), to address the need for quantifying improvement in system efficiency resulting from simultaneous vehicle and network optimization. POEMS and ITS are partially independent methods which do not require each other to function but whose individual effectiveness may be affected by the presence of the other. In order to evaluate the system level efficiency improvements, the Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) metric is used.
