Numerical Study of a Six-Stroke Gasoline Compression Ignition (6S-GCI) Engine Combustion with Oxygenated Fuels

A numerical investigation of a six-stroke direct injection compression ignition engine operation in a low temperature combustion (LTC) regime is presented. The fuel employed is a gasoline-like oxygenated fuel consisting of 90% isobutanol and 10% diethyl ether (DEE) by volume to match the reactivity of conventional gasoline with octane number 87. The computational simulations of the in-cylinder processes were performed using a high-fidelity multidimensional in-house 3D CFD code (MTU-MRNT) with improved spray-sub models and CHEMKIN library. The combustion chemistry was described using a two-component (isobutanol and DEE) fuel model whose oxidation pathways were given by a reaction mechanism with 177 species and 796 reactions.

Vehicle to Load (V2L) Scalable Architecture with On-Board Smart Power Panel Technology

Modern automotive industry field is recently moving to more electrification level, so the presence of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is constantly increasing, along with charging technology evolution. Typically, BEVs do not use a significant portion of their battery’s capacity in day-to-day travel, which means their most valuable asset, the battery, sits idle during most of its life. Vehicle to Load (V2L) feature enables the transfer of energy from vehicle to the external loads (like utility tools, dryer, camping equipment or any other electrical appliance) which is connected to the power socket present in the Power Panel to perform AC Discharging. V2L technology lets consumers get more energy from a vehicle, even when it is turned off, improving consumer appeal. Bottomline, consumers can use this on-board Power Panel like a normal portable generator.

Optimizing Urban Traffic Efficiency via Virtual Eco-Driving Featured by a Single Automated Vehicle

In the face of growing concerns about environmental sustainability and urban congestion, the integration of eco-driving strategies has emerged as a pivotal solution in the field of the urban transportation sector. This study explores the potential benefits of a CAV functioning as a virtual eco-driving controller in an urban traffic scenario with a group of following human-driven vehicles. A computationally inexpensive and realistic powertrain model and energy management system of the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV are developed with the field experiment data and integrated into a forward-looking vehicle simulator to implement and validate an eco-driving speed planning and energy management strategy assuming longitudinal automation. The eco-driving algorithm determines the optimal vehicle speed profile and energy management strategy.

A Linear Quadratic Integral Approach to the Profiling of Engine Speed for Synchronization

During driving conditions, when it is needed to transition from Electric Vehicle (EV) to Hybrid Vehicle operation, synchronization of the engine with the shaft and transmission is essential to enable clutch engagement and, subsequently, providing engine power to the wheels. Challenges arise when the engine must generate power to move itself and cannot rely on electric motors for precision. Cost-effective hybrid vehicle propulsion architectures which utilize small 12V belt-starter generators (BSGs) to initiate engine activation are inherently affected. In these situations, a speed profile that balance rapid response and control effort while considering system limitations to mitigate undesirable overshoots and delays, is required. This paper presents a Linear Quadratic Integral (LQI) approach to formulate a speed reference profile that ensures optimal engine behavior.

Sequence Training and Data Shuffling to Enhance the Accuracy of Recurrent Neural Network Based Battery Voltage Models

Battery terminal voltage modelling is crucial for various applications, including electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and portable electronics. Terminal voltage models are used to determine how a battery will respond under load and can be used to calculate run-time, power capability, and heat generation and as a component of state estimation approaches, such as for state of charge. Previous studies have shown better voltage modelling accuracy for long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks than other traditional methods (e.g., equivalent circuit and electrochemical models). This study presents two new approaches – sequence training and data shuffling – to improve LSTM battery voltage models further, making them an even better candidate for the high-accuracy modelling of lithium-ion batteries. Because the LSTM memory captures information from past time steps, it must typically be trained using one series of continuous data.

Parameter Optimization and Characterization of Aluminum-Copper Laser Welded Joints

Battery packs of electric vehicles are typically composed of lithium-ion batteries with aluminum and copper acting as cell terminals. These terminals are joined together in series by means of connector tabs to produce sufficient power and energy output. Such critical electrical and structural cell terminal connections involve several challenges when joining thin, highly reflective and dissimilar materials with widely differing thermo-mechanical properties. This may involve potential deformation during the joining process and the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds that reduce conductivity and deteriorate mechanical properties. Among various joining techniques, laser welding has demonstrated significant advantages, including the capability to produce joints with low electrical contact resistance and high mechanical strength, along with high precision required for delicate materials like aluminum and copper.

Energy Savings Impact of Eco-Driving Control Based on Powertrain Characteristics in Connected and Automated Vehicles: On-Track Demonstrations

This research investigates the energy savings achieved through eco-driving controls in connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), with a specific focus on the influence of powertrain characteristics. Eco-driving strategies have emerged as a promising approach to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in CAVs. However, uncertainty remains about how the optimal strategy developed for a specific CAV applies to CAVs with different powertrain technologies, particularly concerning energy aspects. To address this gap, on-track demonstrations were conducted using a Chrysler Pacifica CAV equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE), advanced sensors, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems, compared with another CAV, a previously studied Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV) equipped with an electric motor and battery.

An Adaptive Flux-Weakening Strategy Considering High-Speed Operation of Dual Three-Phase PM Machine for Electric Vehicles

Dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are becoming attractive for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion systems in the automotive industry. Flux-weakening (FW) control technique is important to ensure DTP-PMSMs operating in high-speed range. This paper proposes an adaptive FW control algorithm to ensure better performance and stability in variant speeds. A small-signal model is developed to obtain the adaptive gain for a constant controller bandwidth regardless of the speeds. The proposed FW controller is implemented, tuned, and validated on a DTP-PMSM experiment setup. The proposed method improves the FW performances in terms of torque and system stability, compared with the non-adaptive FW controller. Moreover, the harmonics analysis shows an inevitable xy-components affecting the overall performances. The effect of xy controller gain is further investigated for the FW operation.

Improved Accuracy in Calculating of Isolation Resistance of xEV High-Voltage Systems

The integrity of isolation resistance of the xEV high-voltage subsystems is critically important to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants. The term xEV collectively refers to the hybrid electrical vehicle (HEV), plug-in HEV (PHEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV), fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), and range extended electric vehicles (REEV) etc. As described in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 305, the isolation resistance is indirectly determined based on the measured voltages. The existing formula used for calculating the isolation resistance does not take into account the finite input-resistance of the voltage measurement equipment. The assumption of infinite input resistance of the voltage measurement equipment leads to significant error, which will be quantified in this paper. The proposed method in this paper includes the input-resistance and results in accurate calculation of isolation resistance.

Wheel & Axle Disconnect Controls on Hybrid Electric Powertrains

With the proliferation of electric vehicles in the market, it has become important for Automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to focus on delivering a higher driving range while also maximizing performance. One approach OEMs are actively considering in meeting this goal is to include a secondary drive axle disconnect into the powertrain which has the potential to improve the overall driving range by about 6-8.3% [4]. This paper outlines the need for a novel controls architecture to make the Powertrain controls software modular and to reduce the development time needed to provide robust powertrain control software. To do this, the electrified powertrain torque controls at STELLANTIS NV takes a decentralized controls architecture approach, by separating the axle disconnect controls subsystem (ADCS) from the primary path of torque controls. The ADCS takes in information such as the desired axle state and controls the axle disconnect actuators to achieve that state.

Proactive Battery Energy Management Using Navigation Information

In this paper, a control strategy for state of charge (SOC) allocation using navigation data for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) propulsion systems is proposed. This algorithm dynamically defines and adjusts a SOC target as a function of distance travelled on-line, thereby enabling proactive management of the energy store in the battery. The proposed approach incorporates variances in road resistance and adheres to geolocation constraints, including ultra-low emission zones (uLEZ). The anticipated advantages are particularly pronounced during scenarios involving extensive medium-to-long journeys characterized by abrupt topological changes or the necessity for exclusive electric vehicle (EV) mode operation. This novel solution stands to significantly enhance both drivability and fuel economy outcomes.

Development of Time-Temperature Analysis Algorithm for Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Useful Life

Due to the recent progress in electrification, lithium-ion batteries have been widely used for electric and hybrid vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries exhibit high energy density and high-power density which are critical for vehicle development with high driving range enhanced performance. However, high battery temperature can negatively impact the battery life, performance, and energy delivery. In this paper, we developed and applied an analytical algorithm to estimate battery life-based vehicle level testing. A set of vehicle level tests were selected to represent customer duty cycles. Thermal degradation models are applied to estimate battery capacity loss during driving and park conditions. Due to the sensitivity of Lithium-Ion batteries to heat, the effect of high ambient temperatures throughout the year is considered as well. The analysis provides an estimate of the capacity loss due to calendar and cyclic effects throughout the battery life.

Probabilistic Metamodels to Quantify Uncertainties in Electric Powertrain Whining Noise Contribution

With electromobility, vehicles are becoming quieter due to the presence of electric motors that replace internal combustion engines. The interior cabin noise of electric vehicles is characterized by high-frequency components that can be annoying and unpleasant. Therefore, it is essential to analyse the NVH behaviour of e-powertrains early in the design-phase. However, this induces inherent uncertainties during the design process related to the operating conditions, geometrical parameters, measurement techniques, etc. that need to be quantified with fast and comprehensive stochastic models. In this work, we first present a deterministic framework to provide first-order estimations of the e-powertrain’s interior whining noises, combining both the airborne & structure-borne contribution with data-driven NVH transfers meta-models.

HVAC Noise Prediction Using Lighthill Wave Method

Automotive Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is essential in providing the thermal comfort to the cabin occupants. The HVAC noise which is typically not the main noise source in IC engine vehicles, is considered to be one of the dominant sources inside the electric vehicle cabin. As air is delivered through ducts and registers into the cabin, it will create an air-rush/broadband noise and in addition to that, any sharp edges or gaps in flow path can generate monotone/tonal noise. Noise emanating from the HVAC system can be reduced by optimizing the airflow path using virtual tools during the development stage. This paper mainly focuses on predicting the noise from the HVAC ducts and registers. In this study, noise simulations were carried-out with ducts and registers. A Finite Volume Method (FVM) based 3-dimensional (3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver was used for flow as well as acoustic simulations.

Development of a Multiple Injection Strategy for Heated Gasoline Compression Ignition (HGCI)

A multiple-injection combustion strategy has been developed for heated gasoline direct injection compression ignition (HGCI). Gasoline was injected into a 0.4L single cylinder engine at a fuel pressure of 300bar. Fuel temperature was increased from 25degC to a temperature of 280degC by means of electric injector heater. This approach has the potential of improving fuel efficiency, reducing harmful CO and UHC as well as particulate emissions, and reducing pressure rise rates. Moreover, the approach has the potential of reducing fuel system cost compared to high pressure (>500bar) gasoline direct injection fuel systems available in the market for GDI SI engines that are used to reduce particulate matter. In this study, a multiple injection strategy was developed using electric heating of the fuel prior to direct fuel injection at engine speed of 1500rpm and load of 12.3bar IMEP.

Optimization of Aluminum Sleeve Design for the tow eye Durability Using DFSS Approach

The automotive industry is moving towards larger SUVs and also electrification is a need to meet the carbon neutrality target. As a result, we see an increase in overall gross vehicle weight (GVW), with the additional weight coming from the HV battery pack, electric powertrain, and other electrical systems. Tow-eye is an essential component that is provided with every vehicle to use for towing during an emergency vehicle breakdown. The tow-eye is usually connected to the retainer/sleeve available in the bumper system and towed using the recovery vehicle or other car with towing provision. Therefore, the tow-eye should meet the functional targets under standard operating conditions. This study is mainly for cars with bumper and tow-eye sleeves made of aluminum which is used in the most recent development of vehicles for weight-saving opportunities. Tow-eye systems in aluminum bumpers are designed to avoid any bending or buckling of the sleeve during towing for whatever the GVW loads.

Design and Optimization of Steering Assembly for Baja ATV Vehicle

The steering assembly is a part of an automotive suspension system that provides control and stability. It provides control of direction, stability, and control over placement of the car. Optimization of the vehicle in weight results in enhanced performance and low fuel consumption, more so for an all-terrain race car. Optimization in this paper loosely refers to weight reduction and achieving the optimum stiffness to weight ratio of each component. This research encompasses various aspects linked to conceptualizing, designing, analysing, optimizing, and finally manufacturing the steering sub-system. Analytical calculations for mechanical design were performed using data from various experiments and jigs. CAD was developed using SolidWorks, and various analyses were performed using Altair HyperWorks. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was primarily used to build stress plots and locate weak spots aiding optimization.

Assessment of Fuel Consumption of a co-Optimized Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle Platform

Increasing regulatory demand to reduce CO2 emissions has led to an industry focus on electrified vehicles while limiting the development of conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid powertrains. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains rely on conventional SI mode IC engines that are optimized for a narrow operating range. Advanced combustion strategies such as Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) have been demonstrated by several others including the authors to improve brake thermal efficiency compared to both gasoline SI and Diesel CI modes. Soot and NOx emissions are also reduced significantly by using gasoline instead of diesel in GCI engines due to differences in composition, fuel properties, and reactivity. In this work, an HEV system was proposed utilizing a multi-mode GCI based ICE combined with a HEV components (e-motor, battery, and invertor).

As compared with other batteries, lithium-ion batteries are featured by high power density, long service life, high energy density, environmental friendliness and thus have found wide application in the area of consumer electronics. However, lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs and HEVs) have high capacity and large serial-parallel numbers, which, coupled with such problems as safety, durability, cost and uniformity, imposes limitations on the wide application of lithium-ion batteries in the EVs and HEVs. The narrow area in which lithium-ion batteries operate with safety and reliability necessitates the effective control and through the use of management of battery management system. Battery state of health (SOH) monitoring has become a crucial challenge in EVs and HEVs research, as SOH significantly affects the overall vehicle performance and life cycle. Transient Electrochemical Modeling and Performance Investigation Under Different Driving Conditions for 144Ah Li-ion Cell with Two Jelly Rolls

Recently, the automotive industry has experienced rapid growth in powertrain electrification, with more and more battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles being launched. Lithium-ion batteries play an important role due to their high energy capacity and power density, however they experience high heat generation in their operation, and if not properly cooled it can lead to serious safety issues as well as lower performance and durability. In that way, good prediction of a battery behavior is crucial for successful design and management. This paper presents a 1D electrochemical model development of a 144 Ah prismatic rolled cell using the GT-Autolion software with a pseudo 2D approach. The model correlation is done at cell level comparing model results and test data of cell open circuit voltage at different temperatures and voltage and temperature profile under different C-rates and ambient temperatures.
