Facilitating Project-Based Learning Through Application of Established Pedagogical Methods in the SAE AutoDrive Challenge Student Design Competition

The AutoDrive Challenge competition sponsored by General Motors and SAE gives undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to get hands-on experience with autonomous vehicle technology and development as they work towards their degree. Michigan Technological University has participated in the AutoDrive Challenge since its inception in 2017 with students participating through MTU’s Robotic System Enterprise. The MathWorks Simulation Challenge has been a component of the competition since its second year, tasking students with the development of perception, control and testing algorithms using MathWorks software products. This paper presents the pedagogical approach graduate student mentors used to enable students to build their understanding of autonomous vehicle concepts using familiar tools. This approach gives undergraduate students a productive experience with these systems that they may not have encountered in coursework within their academic program.

Trends in Driver Response to Forward Collision Warning and the Making of an Effective Alerting Strategy

This paper compares the results from three human factors studies conducted in a motion-based simulator in 2008, 2014 and 2023, to highlight the trends in driver's response to Forward Collision Warning (FCW). The studies were motivated by the goal to develop an effective HMI (Human-Machine Interface) strategy that enables the required driver's response to FCW while minimizing the level of annoyance of the feature. All three studies evaluated driver response to a baseline-FCW and no-FCW conditions. Additionally, the 2023 study included two modified FCW chime variants: a softer FCW chime and a fading FCW chime. Sixteen (16) participants, balanced for gender and age, were tested for each group in all iterations of the studies. The participants drove in a high-fidelity simulator with a visual distraction task (number reading). After driving 15 minutes in a nighttime rural highway environment, a surprise forward collision threat arose during the distraction task.

Time-Domain Explicit Dynamic CAE Simulation for Brake Squeal

Disc brake squeal is always a challenging multidisciplinary problem in vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) that has been extensively researched. Theoretical analysis has been done to understand the mechanism of disc brake squeal due to small disturbances. Most studies have used linear modal approaches for the harmonic vibration of large models. However, time-domain approaches have been limited, as they are restricted to specific friction models and vibration patterns and are computationally expensive. This research aims to use a time-domain approach to improve the modeling of brake squeal, as it is a dynamic instability issue with a time-dependent friction force. The time-domain approach has been successfully demonstrated through examples and data.

Evolution of India EV Ecosystem

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising and proven technology for achieving sustainable mobility with zero carbon emissions, very low noise pollution, and reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. Global EV sales have been increasing by ~110 % since 2015, with a significant rise in 2021 (~6.75 mils EV registered) mainly led by China, the US, and Europe, amplifying the EV market share to 8.3% compared to 4.2% in 2020. Future developments aimed at designing better batteries and charging technologies that reduce charging time, reduce initial battery cost, and increased flexibility. In India, EVs are emerging significantly due to stringent Carbon di Oxide (CO2) reduction drives, increasing crude oil prices, and the availability of cheaper renewable energy. Leveraging government promotional policies, evolving the entire ecosystem, globally advantageous manufacturing costs, and competitive engineering skills form the perfect blend for India.

This paper presents a method of using CAE to determine the pre-load and torque applied to a U-Bolt rear Spring Seat. In this paper it is review two U-bolt design and the stresses generated by the pre-load torque applied, based in this study a process to determine the minimal preload and the torque is discussed. By this process it is possible to determine the minimum Torque and the correct pre-load in the U-Bolt element and assuring the correct fastening of the components avoiding over stress in the Bar elements.

Evaluation of Cylinder Pressure Transducer Performance Including the Influence of Mounting Location and Thermal Protection

The piezoelectric cylinder pressure transducer is one of the most critical tools for internal combustion (IC) engine research and development. However, not all cylinder pressure transducers perform equally in every application, and the fidelity of transducers can vary across different models and manufacturers. Even slightly dissimilar models from the same manufacturer can have significantly different performance in areas such as sensitivity and resistance to intra-cycle thermal shock. These performance differences can lead to errors and inconsistencies in the calculation of combustion metrics like mean effective pressure (MEP), the polytropic compression and expansion exponents (PolyC and PolyE), and mass fraction burn (MFB) calculations. The variations can lead to suboptimal hardware and calibration choices during the engine development phase.

Model in the loop for training purpose

The automotive industry is passing for a big transformation, due to technologies advance. The electrical technologies are also on a good rising curve, calling the attention of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs). This scenario generates the demand for a faster method to train their new hired engineers, when compared with usual on the job training. Model in the Loop (MiL) consists in one of the real-time embedded systems test phases, which is developed in a computational environment, performing a mathematical modeling of the system, presenting an interface that allows the visualization of its dynamics and the signals involved. Two powerful software in industry that apply MiL are the Matlab and Simulink. A project involving these applications was proposed for a team of new hired engineers, developing models of several vehicle Electronic Control Units (ECUs), with some scope reduction as an example the functional requirements reduction.

A Data-Driven Approach to Determine the Single Droplet Post-Impingement Pattern on a Dry Wall Using Statistical Machine Learning Classification Methods

The study of spray-wall interaction is of great importance to understand the dynamics during fuel-surface impingement process in modern internal combustion engines. The identification of droplet post-impingement pattern (contact, transition, non-contact) and droplet characteristics can quantitatively provide an estimation of energy transfer for spray-wall interaction, thus further influencing air-fuel mixing and emissions under combusting conditions. Theoretical criteria of single droplet post-impingement pattern on a dry wall have been experimentally and numerically studied by many researchers to quantify the hydrodynamic droplet behaviors. However, apart from model fidelity, another issue is the scalability. A theoretical criterion developed from one case might not be well suited to another scenario. In this paper, a data-driven approach for single droplet-dry wall post-impingement pattern utilizing arithmetical machine learning classification methods is proposed and demonstrated.

Studies on Simulation and Real Time Implementation of LQG Controller for Autonomous Navigation

The advancement in embedded systems and positional accuracy with base station GPS modules created opportunity to develop high performance autonomous ground vehicles. However, the development of vehicle model and making accurate state estimations play vital role in reducing the cross track error. The present research focus on developing Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) with Kalman estimator for autonomous ground vehicle to track various routes, that are made with the series of waypoints. The model developed in the LQG controller is a kinematic bicycle model, which mimics 1/5th scale truck. Further, the cubic spline fit has been used to connect the waypoints and generate the continuous desired/target path. The testing and implementation has been done at APS labs, MTU on the mentioned vehicle to study the performance of controller. Python has been used for simulations, controller coding and interfacing the sensors with controller.

Evaluation of Voice Biometrics for Identification and Authentication

The work presented here is part of the research done in the field of voice biometrics. This paper helps to understand the state-of-the-art in speaker recognition technology potentially capable of solving challenges related to speaker identification (to identify a speaker among multiple speakers) and speaker verification/authentication (to recognize the current speaking person at a pre-defined access level and authenticate accordingly). The research was focused on performing an unbiased evaluation of two individual voice biometric services. The level of accuracy in identifying and authenticating individuals using these services provides an insight into the current state of technology and the state of what other dual authentication methods could be used to achieve a desired True Acceptance Rate (TAR) and False Acceptance Rates (FAR).

Numerical Parametric Study of a Six-Stroke Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) Engine Combustion- Part II

In order to extend the operability limit of the gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine, as an avenue for low temperature combustion (LTC) regime, the effects of parametric variations of engine operating conditions on the performance of six-stroke GCI (6S-GCI) engine cycle are numerically investigated, using an in-house 3D CFD code coupled with high-fidelity physical sub-models along with the Chemkin library. The combustion and emissions were calculated using a skeletal chemical kinetics mechanism for a 14-component gasoline surrogate fuel. Authors’ previous study highlighted the effects of the variation of injection timing and split ratio on the overall performance of 6S-GCI engine and the unique mixing-controlled burning mode of the charge mixtures during the two additional strokes. As a continuing effort, the present study details the parametric studies of initial gas temperature, boost pressure, fuel injection pressure, compression ratio, and EGR ratio.

An Analysis of the Effects of Ventilation on Burn Patterns Resulting from Passenger Compartment Interior Fires

Vehicle fire investigators often use the existence of burn patterns, along with the amount and location of fire damage, to determine the fire origin and its cause. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of ventilation location on the interior burn patterns and burn damage of passenger compartment fires. Four similar Ford Fusion vehicles were burned. The fire origin and first material ignited were the same for all four vehicles. In each test, a different door window was down for the duration of the burn test. Each vehicle was allowed to burn until the windshield, back glass, or another window, other than the window used for ventilation, failed, thus changing the ventilation pattern. At that point, the fire was extinguished. Temperatures were measured at various locations in the passenger compartment. Video recordings and still photography were collected at all phases of the study.

Principal Component Analysis of System Usability Scale for Its Application in Automotive In-Vehicle Information System Development

The System Usability Scale (SUS) is used across industries, to evaluate a product’s ease of use. As the automotive industry increases its digital footprint, the SUS has found its application as a simple and reliable assessment of various in-vehicle human machine interfaces. These evaluations cover a broad scope and it is important to design studies with participant fatigue, study time, and study cost in mind. Reducing the number of items in the SUS questionnaire could save researchers time and resources. The SUS is a ten-item questionnaire that can measure usability and learnability, depending on the system. These ten questions are highly correlated to each other suggesting the SUS score can be determined with fewer items. Thus, the focus of this paper is two-fold: using principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the dimensionality of SUS and using this finding to reduce variables and build a regression equation for SUS scores for in-vehicle human machine interfaces.

The fatigue analysis of a full car body requires the sheet metal (sheet fatigue), spot welds (spot weld fatigue) and seam welds (seam weld fatigue) to be thoroughly evaluated for durability. Traditionally this has always been done in the time domain, but recently new frequency domain techniques are able to perform these tasks with numerous advantages. This paper will summarize the frequency domain process and then compare the results and performance against the more usual time domain process.

Durability Study of Automotive Additive Manufactured Specimens

The long-term weathering behavior of three different 3D printable, non-stabilized, UV cure resin formulations (A and B with thiol-ene base, and C with acrylate chemistry) was studied using tensile testing, nano-indentation, and photoacoustic infrared (FTIR-PAS) spectroscopy. To this end, type I tensile bars were printed from each resin system using a 3D printer, and were post UV-cured under a broad spectrum source. Systems A and C showed a similar trend after weathering. They first experienced an increase in modulus and tensile strength, due to additional crosslinking of the residual unreacted species. This increase in mechanical properties was followed by a drop in modulus, tensile strength, and percent elongation, due to the over-crosslinking and consequent embrittlement. System B, however, showed remarkable retention of the mechanical properties before/after weathering.

Predictive Break-In and Rapid Efficiency Characterization of Beam Axles

Given continued industry focus on reducing parasitic losses, the ability to accurately measure the magnitude of losses on all driveline components is required. A standardized test procedure enables manufacturers and suppliers to measure component losses consistently, in addition to offering a reliable process to assess enablers for efficiency improvements. This paper reviews the development of SAE draft standard J3218, which is a comprehensive test procedure to break-in and characterize the efficiency of beam axles. Focus areas of the study included ensuring the axle’s efficiency does not change as it is being characterized, building a detailed map of efficiency at a wide range of operating points, and minimizing test time. The resulting break-in procedure uses an asymptotic regression approach to predict fully broken in efficiency of the axle and determine how much the efficiency of the axle changes during the characterization phase.

Developing a Real-World, Second-by-Second Driving Cycle Database through Public Vehicle Trip Surveys

Real-world second-by-second vehicle driving cycle data is very important for vehicle research and development. A project solely dedicated to generating such information would be tremendously costly and time consuming. Alternatively, we developed such a database by utilizing two publicly available passenger vehicle travel surveys: 2004-2006 Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) Travel Survey and 2011 Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Travel Survey. The surveys complement each other - the former is in low time resolution but covers driver operation for over one year whereas the latter is in high time resolution but represents only one-week-long driving operation. After analyzing the PSRC survey, we chose 382 vehicles, each of which continuously operated for one year, and matched their trips to all the ARC trips. The matching is carried out based on trip distance first, then on average speed, and finally on duration.

Splashing Criterion and Topological Features of a Single Droplet Impinging on the Flat Plate

This paper aims to provide the experimental and numerical investigation of a single fuel droplet impingement on the different wall conditions to understand the detailed impinging dynamic process. The experimental work was carried out at the room temperature and pressure except for the variation of the impinged wall temperature. A high-speed camera was employed to capture the silhouette of the droplet impinging on wall process against a collimated light. Water, diesel, n-dodecane, and n-heptane were considered as four different droplets and injected from a precision syringe pump with the volume flow rate of 0.2 mL/min at various impact Weber numbers. The impingement outcomes after droplet impacting on the wall include stick, spread, rebound and splash, which depend on the controlling parameters of Weber number, Reynolds number, liquid and surface properties, etc.
