Development of model-based control system for a low pressure loop EGR with a negative pressure control valve

To improve the fuel economy, we developed a turbo-charged spark ignition engine combined with a low pressure loop EGR system. A negative pressure control valve has been applied to achieve high EGR ratio in wide engine operation condition. In this paper, a new developed model-based control system for low pressure loop EGR with a negative pressure control valve will be described.

There are two primary technical issues in the application of position sensorless control to generators for 100% electric-drive hybrid vehicles. The first is the risk of losing control when position sensorless estimation methods are changed in accordance with the generator speed, while. The second is the reduction in the maximum torque if the rate of change in the generator speed is extremely large in a relatively low-rotation-speed area. This study proposes countermeasures for each issue and their effects examines them via simulations and experiments.

Construction of Driver Models for Cut-in of Other Vehicles in Car-Following Situations

The purpose of this study was to construct driver models using long short-term memory (LSTM) in car-following situations, where other vehicles change lanes and cut in front of the ego vehicle (EGV). The development of autonomous vehicle systems (AVSs) using personalized driver models based on the individual driving characteristics of drivers is expected to reduce their discomfort with vehicle control systems. The driving characteristics of human drivers must be considered in such AVSs. In this study, we experimentally measured data from the EGV and other vehicles using a driving simulator consisting of a six-axis motion device and turntable. The experimental scenario simulated a traffic congestion scenario on a straight section of a highway, where a cut-in vehicle (CIV) changed lanes from an adjacent lane and entered in between the EGV and preceding vehicle (PRV).

Construction of Driver Models for Overtaking Behavior Using LSTM

This study aimed to construct driver models for overtaking behavior using long short-term memory (LSTM). During the overtaking maneuver, an ego vehicle changes lanes to the overtaking lane while paying attention to both the preceding vehicle in the travel lane and the following vehicle in the overtaking lane and returns to the travel lane after overtaking the preceding vehicle in the travel lane. This scenario was segregated into four phases in this study: Car-Following, Lane-Change-1, Overtaking, and Lane-Change-2. In the Car-Following phase, the ego vehicle follows the preceding vehicle in the travel lane. Meanwhile, in the Lane-Change-1 phase, the ego vehicle changes from the travel lane to the overtaking lane. Overtaking is the phase in which the ego vehicle in the overtaking lane overtakes the preceding vehicle in the travel lane.

Development of Resin Water Jacket Case for Traction Inverter Aiming to Downsizing and Light-Weighting

The size and weight of the traction inverter needs to be reduced to ensure a sufficient cruising range of an electric vehicle. To this end, one approach involves changing materials of the inverter case from aluminum to resin. However, the resin in use of inverter case causes technical issues in terms of collision performance, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and cooling performance because of the difference in the material properties between the resin and the conventionally used aluminum. By solving the abovementioned issues, a resin water jacket case (hereinafter, resin water jacket) was successfully adopted with inverters designed for next-generation electric powertrain in mass production models for the first time. The resin-based structure had advantages to reduce the weight of the inverter case by ~35% and decrease the number of parts to ~3/5, compared to that for the conventional cases.

Construction of Personalized Driver Models Based on LSTM Using Driving Simulator

Many automated driving technologies have been developed and are continuing to be implemented for practical use. Among them a driver model is used in automated driving and driver assistance systems to control the longitudinal and lateral directions of the vehicles that reflect the characteristics of individual drivers. To this end, personalized driver models are constructed in this study using long short-term memory (LSTM). The driver models include individual driving characteristics and adapt system control to help minimize discomfort and nuisance to drivers. LSTM is used to construct the driver model, which includes time-series data processing. LSTM models have been used to investigate pedestrian behaviors and develop driver behavior models in previous studies. We measure the driving operation data of the driver using a driving simulator (DS).

Failure Prediction for Robot Reducers by Combining Two Machine Learning Methods

There are many production robots used at car manufacturing plants, and each of them is fitted with several reducers. A breakdown of one of these reducers may cause a huge loss due to the stoppage of all production lines. Therefore, condition-based maintenance is currently being used to predict failures by predetermined thresholds for average and standard deviations. However, this method can cause many false alarms or some false negatives. There are some ways of suppressing false alarms, such as detecting a change in the probability density function. However, when false alarms are suppressed using the probability density function in the operational range, some false negatives may occur, leading to a breakdown of a reducer and huge loss. A false negative is caused by overlooking an anomaly with slight changes and it is difficult to detect using only the probability density function.

Validation of Wireless Power Transfer up to 11kW Based on SAE J2954 with Bench and Vehicle Testing

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) promises automated and highly efficient charging of electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. As commercial development proceeds forward, the technical challenges of efficiency, interoperability, interference and safety are a primary focus for this industry. The SAE Vehicle Wireless Power and Alignment Taskforce published the Recommended Practice J2954 to help harmonize the first phase of high-power WPT technology development. SAE J2954 uses a performance-based approach to standardizing WPT by specifying ground and vehicle assembly coils to be used in a test stand (per Z-class) to validate performance, interoperability and safety. The main goal of this SAE J2954 bench testing campaign was to prove interoperability between WPT systems utilizing different coil magnetic topologies. This type of testing had not been done before on such a scale with real automaker and supplier systems.

Accuracy of a Driver Model with Nonlinear AutoregRessive with eXogeous Inputs (NARX)

Most driving assist systems are uniformly controlled without considering differences in characteristics of individual drivers. Drivers may feel discomfort, nuisance, and stress if the system functions differently from their characteristics. The present study reduced these side effects for systems with a highly accurate driver model. The model was constructed using Nonlinear AutoregRessive with eXogeous inputs (NARX), which has a learning function and estimates the driving action of a driver. The model was constructed for one driving condition yet can be applied to other driving conditions. If one model can be applied to many driving conditions, a system can construct as minimum requirements. The driver decelerated while approaching the target at the tail of a traffic jam on a highway. A driver model was constructed for the driver’s braking action. The experimental condition was 11 data measurements from 50 to 130 km/h made at intervals of 10 km/h.

High Performance Motor and Inverter System for a Newly Developed Electric Vehicle

This paper describes a newly developed motor and inverter system with maximum torque of 320 Nm and maximum power of 110 kW for a 2018 model year EV. The system achieves this performance with no increase in size from the previous 2013 model year system with maximum torque of 254 Nm and maximum power of 80 kW. The specific features of the new system described in this paper are summarized below. A new inverter power module that adopts a direct cooling structure produces higher current density than the previous model. The designs of components experiencing structural and electrical variation that affects heat generation by the power semiconductors were confirmed. Furthermore, the motor temperature is estimated for thermal protection. These features allow for control logic that can optimally manage the temperatures of the power semiconductors and the motor to facilitate the high torque performance of the system.

Activation Timing of a Collision Avoidance System with V2V Communication

A vehicle-to-vehicle communication system (V2V) sends and receives vehicle information by wireless communication and assists safe driving. The present study investigated the activation timings of collision information support, collision caution support, and collision warning support provided by a V2V in an experiment using a driving simulator for four situations of (1) assistance in braking, (2) assistance in accelerating, (3) assistance in making a right turn, and (4) assistance in making a left turn at a blind intersection. The four situations are common scenarios of traffic accidents in Japan. Safety margins for collision information support and collision warning support were the time required for the driver to fully apply the brake pedal, while the safety margin for collision caution support was the time required for the driver to begin applying the brake pedal. The study investigated the effects of adding safety margins to standard activation timings.

Silicon Carbide Inverter for EV/HEV Application featuring a Low Thermal Resistance Module and a Noise Reduction Structure

This paper presents the technologies incorporated in an electric vehicle (EV)/hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) inverter built with power semiconductors of silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) instead of conventional silicon (Si) insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). A SiC inverter prototype of 2.9 L in size for driving an 80-kW motor was fabricated and evaluated on a motor test bench. The SiC inverter prototype attained average efficiency of 98.5% in the Worldwide harmonized Light-duty Test Cycle (WLTC) driving mode. The two main technologies achieved with this SiC inverter prototype are described. The first one is a new direct-cooled power module with a thick copper (Cu) heat spreader located under the semiconductors that improves thermal resistance by 34% compared with a conventional direct-cooled power module.

Because of rising demands to improve aerodynamic performance owing to its impact on vehicle dynamics, efforts were previously made to reduce aerodynamic lift and yawing moment based on steady-state measurements of aerodynamic forces. In recent years, increased research on dynamic aerodynamics has partially explained the impact of aerodynamic forces on vehicle dynamics. However, it is difficult to measure aerodynamic forces while a vehicle is in motion, and also analyzing the effect on vehicle dynamics requires measurement of vehicle behavior, amount of steering and other quantities noiselessly, as well as an explanation of the mutual influence with aerodynamic forces. Consequently, the related phenomena occurring in the real world are still not fully understood.

Traffic Accidents Involving Cyclists Identifying Causal Factors Using Questionnaire Survey, Traffic Accident Data, and Real-World Observation

The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of traffic accidents involving cyclists. The focus is on the characteristics of cyclist accidents and scenarios, because the number of traffic accidents involving cyclists in Tokyo is the highest in Japan. First, dangerous situations in traffic incidents were investigated by collecting data from 304 cyclists in one city in Tokyo using a questionnaire survey. The survey indicated that cyclists used their bicycles generally while commuting to work or school in the morning. Second, the study investigated the characteristics of 250 accident situations involving cyclists that happened in the city using real-world bicycle accident data. The results revealed that the traffic accidents occurred at intersections of local streets, where cyclists collided most often with vehicles during commute time in the morning. Third, cyclists’ behavior was observed at a local street intersection in the morning in the city using video pictures.

A Model Based Design Methodology for Variable Flux PMSMs to Obtain Desired Speed-Torque Characteristics

Variable flux permanent magnet synchronous machines (VFPMSMs) have been designed by using finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate speed-torque capability considering requirement for magnetization state (MS) manipulation. However, due to its unique characteristic to change the MS, numerous combinations of design parameters need to be evaluated to achieve a final design. To accelerate the design process, this paper presents a method that consists of an equivalent magnetic circuit model and a process to obtain magnet width and thickness that satisfy target maximum torque and power factor (P.F.) capability. This model includes magnet operating point analysis under given magnet width and thickness condition to achieve target MS and avoid demagnetization at full load. This analysis provides desired stator magnetomotive force, magnet and stator induced flux linkage. Therefore, expected torque and P.F. capability is calculated.

Activation Timing in a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication System for Traffic Collision

Vehicle to vehicle communication system (V2V) can send and receive the vehicle information by wireless communication, and can use as a safety driving assist for driver. Currently, it is investigated to clarify an appropriate activation timing for collision information, caution and warning in Japan. This study focused on the activation timing of collision information (Provide objective information for safe driving to the driver) on V2V, and investigated an effective activation timing of collision information, and the relationship between the activation timing and the accuracy of the vehicle position. This experiment used Driving Simulator. The experimental scenario is four situations of (1) “Assistance for braking”, (2) “Assistance for accelerating”, (3) “Assistance for right turn” and (4) “Assistance for left turn” in blind intersection. The activation timing of collision information based on TTI (Time To Intersection) and TTC (Time To Collision).

Mechanism Analysis on LSPI Occurrence in Boosted S. I. Engines

Mechanism of suddenly occurring behavior of low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in boosted spark ignition (SI) engines was analyzed with various experimental methodologies. Endoscope-visualized 1st cycle of LSPI showed droplet-like luminous flame kernels as the origin of flame propagation before spark ignition. With the oil lubricated visualization engine, droplets flying were observed only after enough accumulation of fuel at piston crevice. Also, it was confirmed that subsequent cycles of LSPI occur only after enough operation time. These results indicated that local accumulation of liner adhered fuel and saturation of oil dilution can be a contributing factor to the sudden occurrence of LSPI.

Reciprocal Measurements of the Vehicle Transfer Function for Road Noise

Road Noise is generated by the change of random displacement input inside the tire contact patch. Since the existing 3 or 6 directional electromagnetic shakers have a flat surface at the tire contact patch, these shakers cannot excite the vehicle in a manner representative of actual on-road road noise input. Therefore, this paper proposes a new experimental method to measure the road noise vehicle transfer function. This method is based on the reciprocity between the tire contact patch and the driver's ear location. The reaction force sensor of the tire contact patch is newly developed for the reciprocal loud speaker excitation at the passenger ear location. In addition, with this equipment, it is possible to extract the dominant structural mode shapes creating high sound pressure in the automotive interior acoustic field. This method is referred to as experimental structure mode participation to the noise of the acoustic field in the vibro-acoustic coupling analysis.

Cycling Characteristics of Bicycles at an Intersection

Although traffic accidents in Japan involving bicycles have been decreasing yearly, more than 120,000 per year still occur. Few data exist regarding the mechanisms underlying bicycle accidents occurring at intersections. Such dangerous situations form the backdrop of the warning and automatic braking systems being developed for motor vehicles. By clarifying cyclist behavioral characteristics at crucial times, it may be possible to introduce a similar warning system for cyclists as a countermeasure to reduce accidents. The objective of this study is to clarify the mechanism of accidents involving bicycles and to obtain useful data for the development of a warning system for cyclists. A video camera and software investigated and analyzed cyclists' speed and trajectory at an intersection where many accidents occur. Cyclists entering the intersection from one direction were recorded.

Verification of Flag Usage Patterns by Static Analysis Techniques

A flag is a global boolean variable used to achieve synchronization between various tasks of an embedded system. An application implementing flags performs actions or events based on the value of the flags. If flag variables are not implemented properly, certain synchronization related issues can arise which can lead to unexpected behavior or failure of the underlying system. In this paper, we present an automated verification technique to identify and verify flag usage patterns at an early stage of code development. We propose a two-step approach which consists of: a. identification of all potential flag variables and b. verification of flag usage patterns against predefined set of rules. The results of our experiment demonstrate that the proposed approach reduces the cost and complexity of the flag review process by almost 70%.
