Virtual Methodology for Active Force Cancellation in Automotive Application Using Mass Imbalance & Centrifugal Force Generation (CFG) Principle

A variety of structures resonate when they are excited by external forces at, or near, their natural frequencies. This can lead to high deformation which may cause damage to the integrity of the structure. There have been many applications of external devices to dampen the effects of this excitation, such as tuned mass dampers or both semi-active and active dampers, which have been implemented in buildings, bridges, and other large structures. One of the active cancellation methods uses centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of an unbalanced mass. These forces help to counter the external excitation force coming into the structure. This research focuses on active force cancellation using centrifugal forces (CFG) due to mass imbalance and provides a virtual solution to simulate and predict the forces required to cancel external excitation to an automotive structure. This research tries to address the challenges to miniaturize the CFG model for a body-on-frame truck.

Event-Triggered Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Vehicle with Rear Steering

This paper proposes a new nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) for autonomous vehicle path tracking problem. The vehicle is equipped with active rear steering, allowing independent control of front and rear steering. Traditional NMPC, which runs at fixed sampling rate, has been shown to provide satisfactory control performance in this problem. However, the high throughput of NMPC limits its implementation in production vehicle. To address this issue, we propose a novel event-triggered NMPC formulation, where the NMPC is triggered to run only when the actual states deviate from prediction beyond certain threshold. In other words, the event-triggered NMPC will formulate and solve a constrained optimal control problem only if it is enabled by a trigger event. When NMPC is not triggered, the optimal control sequence computed from last NMPC instance is shifted to determine the control action.

Casting is the ability to let users transfer their favorite videos, music, movies, etc. from their phone to a chosen display. This functionality has become very popular these days, and to the user, it is as simple as clicking a button. This “simple” task is a complex system that requires various independent sources to communicate efficiently and effectively to produce a robust and reliable output. The sending and receiving devices are required to be on the same network - which involves reliable and secure connection. This allows the sending of the URL of the chosen feature to the server provider, which will then connect to the receiver embedded electronics where the authentication process that protects Digital Rights Management (DRM) is established. In the era of developing autonomous and luxury vehicles, this technology has the potential to add a new dimension of in-vehicle entertainment that could come very close to the home experience.

Low Profile PIFA Antenna for Vehicular 5G and DSRC Communication Systems

A low profile wideband Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is presented in this paper for automotive application in the sub-6 GHz 5G system and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) bands that operates in the frequency range from 617 MHz to 6 GHz while having an acceptable rejection in the GNSS bands. The proposed antenna is suitable for low profile applications in the automotive industry due to its physical dimensions and performance. Simulation results are presented along with measured data on a ground plane (GND) and on a vehicle from properly cut metal sheet prototype. The results are discussed in terms of return loss, radiation patterns, and efficiency.

Technological advancement in the automotive industry necessities a closer focus on the functional safety for higher automated driving levels. The automotive industry is transforming from conventional driving technology, where the driver or the human is a part of the control loop, to fully autonomous development and self-driving mode. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines the level 4 of autonomy: “Automated driving feature will not require the driver to take over driving control.” Thus, more and more safety related electronic control units (ECUs) are deployed in the control module to support the vehicle. As a result, more complexity of system architecture, software, and hardware are interacting and interfacing in the control system, which increases the risk of both systematic and random hardware failures.

Approximating Convective Boundary Conditions for Transient Thermal Simulations with Surrogate Models for Thermal Packaging Studies

The need for transient thermal simulations in vehicle packaging studies has grown rapidly in recent years. To date, the computational costs associated with the transient simulation of 3D conjugate heat transfer phenomena has prohibited the widespread use of full vehicle transient simulations. This paper presents results from a recent study that explored a method to circumvent the computational costs associated with long transient conjugate heat transfer simulations. The proposed method first segregates the thermal structural and fluid physics domains to take advantage of time scale differences. The two domains are then re-coupled to calculate a series of steady state conjugate heat transfer simulations at various vehicle speeds. The local convection terms are then used to construct a set of surrogate models dependent on vehicle speed, that predict the local heat transfer coefficients and the local near wall fluid temperatures.

Towards Video Sharing in Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure for Road Safety

Current implementations of vision-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are largely dependent on real-time vehicle camera data along with other sensory data available on-board such as radar, ultrasonic, and GPS data. This data, when accurately reported and processed, helps the vehicle avoid collisions using established ADAS applications such as Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA), Autonomous Cruise Control (ACC), Pedestrian Detection, etc. Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) over Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) provides basic sensory data from other vehicles or roadside infrastructure including position information of surrounding traffic. Exchanging rich data such as vision data between multiple vehicles, and between vehicles and infrastructure provides a unique opportunity to advance driver assistance applications and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

CAN Crypto FPGA Chip to Secure Data Transmitted Through CAN FD Bus Using AES-128 and SHA-1 Algorithms with A Symmetric Key

Robert Bosch GmBH proposed in 2012 a new version of communication protocol named as Controller area network with Flexible Data-Rate (CANFD), that supports data frames up to 64 bytes compared to 8 bytes of CAN. With limited data frame size of CAN message, and it is impossible to be encrypted and secured. With this new feature of CAN FD, we propose a hardware design - CAN crypto FPGA chip to secure data transmitted through CAN FD bus by using AES-128 and SHA-1 algorithms with a symmetric key. AES-128 algorithm will provide confidentiality of CAN message and SHA-1 algorithm with a symmetric key (HMAC) will provide integrity and authentication of CAN message. The design has been modeled and verified by using Verilog HDL – a hardware description language, and implemented successfully into Xilinx FPGA chip by using simulation tool ISE (Xilinx).

Development of a Fork-Join Dynamic Scheduling Middle-Layer for Automotive Powertrain Control Software

Multicore microcontrollers are rapidly making their way into the automotive industry. We have adopted the Cilk approach (MIT 1994) to develop a pure ANSI C Fork-Join dynamic scheduling runtime middle-layer with a work-stealing scheduler targeted for automotive multicore embedded systems. This middle-layer could be running on top of any AUTOSAR compliant multicore RTOS. We recently have successfully integrated our runtime layer into parts of legacy Ford powertrain software at Ford Motor Company. We have used the 3-core AURIX multicore chip from Infineon and the multicore RTA-OS. For testing purposes, we have forked some parallelizable functions inside two periodic tasks in Ford legacy powertrain software to be dynamically scheduled and executed on the available cores. Our preliminary evaluation showed 1.3–1.4x speedups for these two forked tasks.

Time-Dependent Reliability-Based Design Optimization of Vibratory Systems

A methodology for time-dependent reliability-based design optimization of vibratory systems with random parameters under stationary excitation is presented. The time-dependent probability of failure is computed using an integral equation which involves up-crossing and joint up-crossing rates. The total probability theorem addresses the presence of the system random parameters and a sparse grid quadrature method calculates the integral of the total probability theorem efficiently. The sensitivity derivatives of the time-dependent probability of failure with respect to the design variables are computed using finite differences. The Modified Combined Approximations (MCA) reanalysis method is used to reduce the overall computational cost from repeated evaluations of the system frequency response or equivalently impulse response function. The method is applied to the shape optimization of a vehicle frame under stochastic loading.

Dimension Study of Punched Hole Using Conical Tipped Punches

Dimensional problems for punched holes on a sheet metal stamping part include being undersized and oversized. Some important relationships among tools and products, such as the effect of conical punch tip angle, are not fully understood. To study this effect, sheets of AA6016 aluminum and BH210 steel were punched by punches with different conical tip angles. The test method and test results are presented. The piercing force and withdrawing force when using conical punches were also studied. The results indicate that the oversize issue for a punched hole in a stamped panel is largely due to the combination of the conical tip effect and the stretching-release effect.

Consequences of Deep Cycling 24 Volt Battery Strings

Deep charge and discharge cycling of 24 Volt battery strings composed of two 12 Volt VRLA batteries wired in series affects reliability and life expectancy. This is a matter of interest in vehicle power source applications. These cycles include those specific operational cases requiring the delivery of the full storage capacity during discharge. The concern here is related to applications where batteries serve as a primary power source and the energy content is an issue. It is a common practice for deep cycling a 24 volt battery string to simply add the specified limit voltages during charge and discharge for the individual 12 Volt batteries. In reality, the 12 Volt batteries have an inherent capacity variability and are not identical in their performance characteristics. The actual voltages of the individual 12 Volt batteries are not identical.

Towards Improved Automotive HVAC Control through Internet Connectivity

Traditional Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control systems are reactive by design and largely dependent on the on-board sensory data available on a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The increasingly common Internet connectivity offered in today's vehicles, through infotainment and telematic systems, makes data available that may be used to improve current HVAC systems. This includes real-time outside relative humidity, ambient temperature, precipitation (i.e., rain, snow, etc.), and weather forecasts. This data, combined with position and route information of the vehicle, may be used to provide a more comfortable experience to vehicle occupants in addition to improving driver visibility through more intelligent humidity, and defrost control. While the possibility of improving HVAC control utilizing internet connectivity seems obvious, it is still currently unclear as to what extent.

A Methodology for Design Decisions using Block Diagrams

Our recent work has shown that representation of systems using a reliability block diagram can be used as a decision making tool. In decision making, we called these block diagrams decision topologies. In this paper, we generalize the results and show that decision topologies can be used to make many engineering decisions and can in fact replace decision analysis for most decisions. We also provide a meta-proof that the proposed method using decision topologies is entirely consistent with decision analysis at the limit. The main advantages of the method are that (1) it provides a visual representation of a decision situation, (2) it can easily model tradeoffs, (3) it can incorporate binary attributes, (4) it can model preferences with limited information, and (5) it can be used in a low-fidelity sense to quickly make a decision.

Investigation of Fuel Cell Performance and Water Accumulation in a Transparent PEM Fuel Cell

Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells have grown in research and development for many applications due to their high efficiency and humble operating condition requirements. Water management in the cathode region of the PEM fuel cell is an essential and sensitive phenomenon for cold environments and fuel cell’s performance. This paper investigates the behavior of water production by constructing a transparent-cathode PEM fuel cell. The effects of pressure, relative humidity, and cathode stoichiometric ratio on the production of water as a function of time were studied. Each test set is compared to a reference state. The images of water liquid accumulation inside the cathode bipolar plate channels are shown with the corresponding polarization curves.

Improving Time-To-Collision Estimation by IMM Based Kalman Filter

In a CAS system, the distance and relative velocity between front and host vehicles are estimated to calculate time-to-collision (TTC). The distance estimates by different methods will certainly include noise which should be removed to ensure the accuracy of TTC calculations. Kalman filter is a good tool to filter such type of noise. Nevertheless, Kalman filter is a model based filter, which means a correct model is important to get the good filtering results. Usually, a vehicle is either moving with a constant velocity (CV) or constant acceleration (CA) maneuvers. This means the distance data between front and host vehicles can be described by either constant velocity or constant acceleration model. In this paper, first, CV and CA models are used to design two Kalman filters and an interacting multiple model (IMM) is used to dynamically combine the outputs from two filters.

Offset Algorithm for Compound Angle Machining of Parts when Tool Motion is Unrestricted in Space

Although the performance of CNC machines is accurate, unavoidable human errors at the part loading position have serious repercussions on engine performance. In the present paper the authors would like to develop an algorithm for error compensation when the tool movement is unrestricted in space. The new solution algorithm will be in terms of the known initial system variables such as the part loading errors, drill tool inclinations, location of spindle etc. This modified paper employs the same principles of inverse kinematics as done in the earlier paper wherein a faulty compound-hole angle axis in space caused by the translational and rotational errors at the part loading position is identified with an imaginary true axis in space by enforcing identity through a modified machine axes taking into effect inclination of the drill tool in space. In the absence of any specific application, this algorithm is verified on Solid Works a commercial CAD tool and found to be correct.

Measurement of Thermal Residual Strain Induced During the Hardening of a Sheet Metal and Reinforced Composite by Digital Shearography

Shearography is an interferometric, non-contact and full field method for direct measurement of first derivatives of deformation (strain). It is relatively insensitive to environmental disturbances and has been proven to be a practical measuring tool for nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE). In this paper it has been employed to study the thermal residual strains produced during the reinforcement of a composite to a sheet metal. The reinforced composite is used as an additive to provide extra strength to the sheet metal. The reinforcement process involves gradual heating of the glued composite to a temperature of around 175°C - 180°C and then allowing it cool down to room temperature. During the heating process both the composite and the sheet metal are strained, but during the cooling process some amount of strain is left behind in the sheet metal and it has a key role to play when the product is used for critical parts in automobile and aircraft industries.

On the Use of a Honda 600cc 4-Cylinder Engine for Formula SAE Competition

The Formula SAE® rules require the use of a 20mm intake restrictor. The presence of the restrictor necessitates the design or retuning of fuel and spark strategies that, in turn require the use of a programmable engine control unit (ECU). This paper describes a process used to establish the fuel and spark strategies for a standard production motorcycle engine operating with a restricted air intake. Honda 600cc engines were controlled by three different ECUs: a Haltech, DTA and an “in-house” ECU. Simple calculations of injection duration are suggested to provide a baseline fuel map from which the engine could be started, and then fuel maps are tuned by experiment. Similar baseline numbers for ignition timing are given.

ECU Development for a Formula SAE Engine

Motivated by experiences in the Formula SAE® competition, an engine control unit (ECU) was designed, developed and tested at Oakland University. A systems approach was taken in which the designs of the electronic architecture and software were driven by the mechanical requirements and operational needs of the engine, and by the need for dynamometer testing and tuning functions. An ECU, powered by a 68HC12 microcontroller was developed, including a four-layer circuit board designed for EMC. A GUI was written with Visual C++® for communication with a personal computer (PC). The ECU was systematically tested with an engine simulator, a 2L Ford engine and a 600cc Honda engine, and finally in Oakland's 2004 FSAE vehicle.
