Study of Braking Characteristics of New Manual Braking System (1st Report)

The purpose of this study is to propose braking characteristics that are easy for drivers to handle in a system in which braking and driving operations are performed by hand. Genetic algorithm optimization of braking characteristics showed that the best deceleration tracking was achieved by an FG diagram with a logarithmic function shape. In contrast, the slope of the optimal FG diagram tended to decrease as the driver's proportional gain increased.

Methanol Mixing-Controlled Compression Ignition with Ignition Enhancer for Off-Road Engine Operation

Methanol is one of the most promising fuels for the decarbonization of the off-road and transportation sectors. Although methanol is typically seen as an alternative fuel for spark ignition engines, mixing-controlled compression ignition (MCCI) combustion is typically preferred in most off-road and medium-and heavy-duty applications due to its high reliability, durability and high-efficiency. In this paper, the potential of using ignition enhancers to enable methanol MCCI combustion was investigated. Methanol was blended with 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) and experiments were performed in a single-cylinder production-like diesel research engine, which has a displacement volume of 0.83 L and compression ratio of 16:1. The effect of EHN has been evaluated with three different levels (3%vol, 5%vol, and 7%vol) under low- and part-load conditions. The injection timing has been swept to find the stable injection window for each EHN level and load.

An Examination of Sensing Skins with Tailored Conductivity Distributions for Enhanced 2-D Surface Temperature Measurements Using Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT)

For 2D surface temperature monitoring applications, a variant of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) was evaluated computationally in this study. Literature examples of poor sensor performance in the center of the 2D domains away from the side electrodes motivated these efforts which seek to overcome some of the previously noted shortcomings. In particular, the use of ‘sensing skins’ with novel tailored baseline conductivities was examined using the EIDORS package for EIT. It was found that the best approach for detecting a temperature hot spot depends on several factors such as the current injection (stimulation) patterns, the measurement patterns, and the reconstruction algorithms. For well-performing combinations of these factors, customized baseline conductivities were assessed and compared to the baseline uniform conductivity.

Evaluation of Fully Sustainable Low Carbon Gasoline Fuels Meeting Japanese E10 Regular and Premium Octane Specifications

Reducing the carbon emissions associated with ICE- containing vehicles is a complimentary step towards carbon neutrality alongside the introduction of vehicles using newer energy vectors. In this study, the authors investigated emissions and efficiency impact of fully renewable E10-grade gasoline fuels blended with sustainable components at both 90 RON and 96 RON in comparison with reference regular E0 and premium certification gasolines across a range of ICE vehicle applications. Both renewable fuels were blended to the Japan JIS K2022 2012 E10 specification. The study shows very low carbon gasolines are technically feasible and potentially have an important role to play in decarbonizing both new advanced technology ICE vehicles and, critically, the existing ICE vehicle parc in the transition towards a zero emissions future.

Vehicle Simulations development to predict Electric field level distribution based on GB/T18387 measurement method

The development of electric vehicles has been progressed, rapidly, to achieve Carbon neutrality by 2050. There have been increasing concerns about Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) performance due to increasing power for power trains of vehicles. Because same power train system expands to some vehicles, we have developed numerical simulations in order to predict the vehicle EMC performances. We modeled a vehicle which has inverter noises by numerical simulation to calculate electric fields based on GB/T18387. We simulated the common mode noise which flows through the shielding braid of the high voltage wire harnesses. As a result, it is confirmed a correlation between the electric fields calculated by numerical simulation and the measured one.

Development of e-AWD Hybrid System with Turbo Engine for SUVs

This paper describes the development of a new e-AWD hybrid system developed for SUVs. This hybrid system consists of a high-torque 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and a front unit that contains a 6-speed automatic transmission, an electric motor, and an inverter. It also includes a rear eAxle unit that contains a water-cooled high-power motor, an inverter, and a reduction gear, as well as a bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery. By combining a turbo engine that can output high torque across a wide range of engine rpm with two electric motors (front and rear), this system achieves both smooth acceleration with a torquey driving feeling and rapid response when the accelerator pedal is pressed. In addition, new AWD control using the water-cooled rear motor realized more stable cornering performance than the previous e-AWD system.

Development of Three-Way Catalysts with Enhanced Cold Performance

Global focus on CO2 reduction and environmental protection is increasing. To comply with stricter exhaust gas regulations and reduce real world emissions, it is becoming increasingly important to improve the performance of three-way catalysts. Therefore, highly efficient conversion of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) is required. In general, the more active the precious metals used, the better the conversion performance. However, precious metals have supply risks, such as price fluctuation and the uneven distribution of production areas. Therefore, it is necessary to lower emissions while also lowering the amount of precious metals used. This paper focuses on how catalysts are used and describes the development of a new three-way catalyst for the purpose of strengthening cold conversion and decreasing the usage of precious metals.

Optical Investigation of Mixture Formation in a Hydrogen-Fueled Heavy-Duty Engine with Direct-Injection

Mixture formation in a hydrogen-fueled heavy-duty engine with direct injection and a nearly-quiescent top-hat combustion chamber was investigated using laser-induced fluorescence imaging, with 1,4-difluorobenzene serving as a fluorescent tracer seeded into hydrogen. The engine was motored at 1200 rpm, 1.0 bar intake pressure, and 335 K intake temperature. An outward opening medium-pressure hollow-cone injector was operated at two different injection pressures and five different injection timings from early injection during the intake stroke to late injection towards the end of compression stroke. Fuel fumigation upstream of the intake provided a well-mixed reference case for image calibration. This paper presents the evolution of in-cylinder equivalence ratio distribution evaluated during the injection event itself for the cylinder-axis plane and during the compression stroke at different positions of the light sheet within the swirl plane.

Experimental and Numerical Study on the Effect of Nitric Oxide on Autoignition and Knock in a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Nitric Oxide (NO) can significantly influence the autoignition reactivity and this can affect knock limits in conventional stoichiometric SI engines. Previous studies also revealed that the role of NO changes with fuel type. Fuels with high RON (Research Octane Number) and high Octane Sensitivity (S = RON - MON (Motor Octane Number)) exhibited monotonically retarding knock-limited combustion phasing (KL-CA50) with increasing NO. In contrast, for a high-RON, low-S fuel, the addition of NO initially resulted in a strongly retarded KL-CA50 but beyond the certain amount of NO, KL-CA50 advanced again. The current study focuses on same high-RON, low-S Alkylate fuel to better understand the mechanisms responsible for the reversal in the effect of NO on KL-CA50 beyond a certain amount of NO.

Variable Axial Composite Lightweight Automotive Parts Using Anisotropic Topology Optimization and Tailored Fiber Placement

This paper presents a design method for continuous fiber composites in three-dimensional space with locally varying orientation distribution and their fabrication method. The design method is formulated based on topology optimization by augmented tensor field design variables. The fabrication method is based on Tailored Fiber Placement technology, whereby a CNC embroidery machine prepares the preform. The fiber path is generated from an optimized orientation distribution field. The preform is formed with vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding. The fabricated prototype weighs 120 g, a 70% weight reduction, achieving 3.5× mass-specific stiffness improvement.

Non-Equilibrium Law-of-the-Wall Modeling for Improved Heat Transfer Predictions: Model Development and Validation

A one-dimensional, non-equilibrium, compressible law of the wall model is proposed to increase the accuracy of heat transfer predictions from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of internal combustion engine flows on engineering grids. Our 1D model solves the transient turbulent Navier-Stokes equations for mass, momentum, energy and turbulence under the thin-layer assumption, using a finite-difference spatial scheme and a high-order implicit time integration method. A new algebraic eddy-viscosity closure, derived from the Han-Reitz equilibrium law of the wall, with enhanced Prandtl number sensitivity and compressibility effects, was developed for optimal performance. Several eddy viscosity sub-models were tested for turbulence closure, including the two-equation k-epsilon and k-omega, which gave insufficient performance.

Cabin Comfort Improvement and Heating Energy Reduction under Cold-Condition by Using Radiative Heater

Since the regulations of CO2 emissions have been tightened in each country recently, each automotive manufacturer has responded by bringing competitive technologies that maximize efficiency while promoting vehicle electrification such as xEV. Not only the efficiency, we need to meet or exceed occupant performance and comfort expectations. The climate control system expends a large amount of energy to keep a comfortable environment, having a significant impact on fuel consumption and EV driving range. Therefore, many manufacturers try to save energy and improve occupant comfort quickly by using not only the conventional convective heating by HVAC but also the conductive heating to heat the human body directly such as seat and steering wheel heater. In this study, a radiative heater, which is more efficient than a convective heating to warm anterior thigh and shin where a conductive heating cannot warm, was applied to vehicle.

A Review of Current Understanding of the Underlying Physics Governing the Interaction, Ignition and Combustion Dynamics of Multiple-Injections in Diesel Engines

This work is a comprehensive technical review of existing literature and a synthesis of current understanding of the governing physics behind the interaction of multiple fuel injections, ignition, and combustion behavior of multiple-injections in diesel engines. Multiple-injection is a widely adopted operating strategy applied in modern compression-ignition engines, which involves various combinations of small pre-injections and post-injections of fuel before and after the main injection and splitting the main injection into multiple smaller injections. This strategy has been conclusively shown to improve fuel economy in diesel engines while achieving simultaneous NOX, soot, and combustion noise reduction - in addition to a reduction in the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and CO by preventing fuel wetting and flame quenching at the piston wall.

Research on Ultra-High Viscosity Index Engine Oil: Part 2 - Influence of Engine Oil Evaporation Characteristics on Oil Consumption of Internal Combustion Engines

The reduction of CO2 emissions is one of the most important challenges for the automotive industry to contribute to address global warming. Reducing friction of internal combustion engines (ICEs) is one effective countermeasure to realize this objective. The improvement of engine oil can contribute to reduce fuel consumption by reducing friction between engine parts. Electrification of ICE powertrains increases the overall efficiency of powertrains and reduces the average engine oil temperature during vehicle operation, due to intermittent engine operation. An effective way of reducing engine friction is to lower the viscosity of the engine oil in the low to medium temperature range. This can be accomplished while maintaining viscosity at high temperatures by reducing the base oil viscosity and increasing the viscosity modifier (VM) content to raise the viscosity index (so-called “flat viscosity” concept).

Catalyst-Heating Operation in a Medium-Duty Diesel Engine: Operating Strategy Calibration, Fuel Reactivity, and Fuel Oxygen Effects

Compliance with future ultra-low nitrogen oxide regulations with diesel engines requires the fastest possible heating of the exhaust aftertreatment system to its proper operating temperature upon cold starting. Late post injections are commonly integrated into catalyst-heating operating strategies. This experimental study provides insight into the complex interactions between the injection-strategy calibration and the tradeoffs between exhaust heat and pollutant emissions. Experiments are performed with certification diesel fuel and blends of diesel fuel with butylal and hexyl hexanoate. Further analyses of experimental data provide insight into fuel reactivity and oxygen content as potential enablers for improved catalyst-heating operation. A statistical design-of-experiments approach is developed to investigate a wide range of injection strategy calibrations at three different intake dilution levels.

Development of Aerodynamic Drag Reduction around Rear Wheel

Due to new CO2 regulations and increasing demand for improved fuel economy, reducing aerodynamic drag has become more critical. Aerodynamic drag at the rear of the vehicle accounts for approximately 40% of overall aerodynamic drag due to low base pressure in the wake region. Many studies have focused on the wake region structure and shown that drag reduction modifications such as boattailing the rear end and sharpening the rear edges of the vehicle are effective. Despite optimization using such modifications, recent improvements in the aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) seem to have plateaued. One reason for this is the fact that vehicle design is oriented toward style and practicality. Hence, maintaining flexibility of design is crucial to the development of further drag reduction modifications. The purpose of this study was to devise a modification to reduce rear drag without imposing additional design restrictions on the upper body.

Development of Coated Gasoline Particulate Filter Design Method Combining Simulation and Multi-Objective Optimization

In recent years, GPFs (Gasoline particulate filters) have been installed in gasoline engines to comply with stricter environmental regulations in China and Europe. In particular, coated-GPFs having a catalytic purification function are required to have high conversion performances, high filter efficiencies in the sense of a high collection efficiency, and low pressure loss. It is not easy to design a filter that satisfies all these parameters. Experimental studies are being conducted, but it is costly to study in trial productions. In this technical paper, a GPF design optimization method will be proposed that combines multi-scale simulation, surrogate models by machine learning, and an optimization algorithm. By using this method, a GPF design that minimizes pressure loss while providing high conversion performance and particle collection rates that satisfy current regulations can be created.

Development of Air Supply Controller for FCV Based on Model-Based Development Approach

In Toyota’s 2nd generation FCV, an electric turbo-type air compressor has been adopted for downsizing and cost reduction. Automotive Fuel Cell applications present several challenges for implementing a turbo-type air compressor. When operating a fuel cell in high-temperature or high-altitude locations, the FC stack must be pressurized to prevent dry-up. The flow rate vs pressure conditions that the FC must pass through or in some cases operate at are typically within the surge region of a turbo-type air compressor. Additionally, Toyota requires quick air transient response (< 1 sec) for power generation, energy management, and FC dry-up prevention. If the turbo-type air compressor is not precisely controlled during quick transients, it can easily enter the surge region.

Measurements and Correlations of Local Cylinder-Wall Heat-Flux Relative to Near-Wall Chemiluminescence across Multiple Combustion Modes

Minimizing heat-transfer (HT) losses is important for both improving engine efficiency and increasing exhaust energy for turbocharging and exhaust aftertreatment management, but engine combustion system design to minimize these losses is hindered by significant uncertainties in prediction. Empirical HT correlations such as the popular Woschni model have been developed and various attempts at improving predictions have been proposed since the 1960s, but due to variations in facilities and techniques among various studies, comparison and assessment of modelling approaches among multiple combustion modes is not straightforward. In this work, simultaneous cylinder-wall temperature and OH* chemiluminescence high-speed video are all recorded in a single heavy-duty optical engine operated under multiple combustion modes. OH* chemiluminescence images provide additional insights for identifying the causes of near-wall heat flux changes.

Analysis of Personal Routing Preference from Probe Data in Cloud

Routing quality always dominates the top 20% of in vehicle- navigation customer complaints. In vehicle navigation routing engines do not customize results based on customer behavior. For example, some users prefer the quickest route while some prefer direct routes. This is because in vehicle navigation systems are traditionally embedded systems. Toyota announced that new model vehicles in JP, CN, US will be connected with routing function switching from the embedded device to the cloud in which there are plenty of probe data uploaded from the vehicles. Probe data makes it possible to analyze user preferences and customize routing profile for users. This paper describes a method to analyze the user preferences from the probe data uploaded to the cloud. The method includes data collection, the analysis model of route scoring and user profiling. Furthermore, the evaluation of the model will be introduced at the end of the paper.
