Assessment of Condensation Particle Counter-Based Portable Solid Particle Number System for Applications with High Water Content in Exhaust

The Particle Number–Portable Emission Measurement System (PN-PEMS) came into force with Euro VI Phase E regulations starting January 1, 2022. However, positive ignition (PI) engines must comply from January 1, 2024. The delay was due to the unavailability of the PN-PEMS system that could withstand high concentrations of water typically present in the tailpipe (TP) of CNG vehicles, which was detrimental to the PN-PEMS systems. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the condensation particle counter (CPC)-based PN-PEMS measurement capabilities that was upgraded to endure high concentration of water. The PN-PEMS measurement of solid particle number (SPN23) greater than 23 nm was compared against the laboratory-grade PN systems in four phases. Each phase differs based upon the PN-PEMS and PN system location and measurements were made from three different CNG engines. In the first phase, systems measured the diluted exhaust through constant volume sampler (CVS) tunnel.

Enhanced Safety of Heavy-Duty Vehicles on Highways through Automatic Speed Enforcement – A Simulation Study

Highway safety remains a significant concern, especially in mixed traffic scenarios involving heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) and smaller passenger cars. The vulnerability of HDVs following closely behind smaller cars is evident in incidents involving the lead vehicle, potentially leading to catastrophic rear-end collisions. This paper explores how automatic speed enforcement systems, using speed cameras, can mitigate risks for HDVs in such critical situations. While historical crash data consistently demonstrates the reduction of accidents near speed cameras, this paper goes beyond the conventional notion of crash occurrence reduction. Instead, it investigates the profound impact of driver behavior changes within desired travel speed distribution, especially around speed cameras, and their contribution to the safety of trailing vehicles, with a specific focus on heavy-duty trucks in accident-prone scenarios.

Assessing Resilience in Lane Detection Methods: Infrastructure-Based Sensors and Traditional Approaches for Autonomous Vehicles

Traditional autonomous vehicle perception subsystems that use onboard sensors have the drawbacks of high computational load and data duplication. Infrastructure-based sensors, which can provide high quality information without the computational burden and data duplication, are an alternative to traditional autonomous vehicle perception subsystems. However, these technologies are still in the early stages of development and have not been extensively evaluated for lane detection system performance. Therefore, there is a lack of quantitative data on their performance relative to traditional perception methods, especially during hazardous scenarios, such as lane line occlusion, sensor failure, and environmental obstructions.

Engineering Requirements that Address Real World Hazards from Using High-Definition Maps, GNSS, and Weather Sensors in Autonomous Vehicles

Evaluating real-world hazards associated with perception subsystems is critical in enhancing the performance of autonomous vehicles. The reliability of autonomous vehicles perception subsystems are paramount for safe and efficient operation. While current studies employ different metrics to evaluate perception subsystem failures in autonomous vehicles, there still exists a gap in the development and emphasis on engineering requirements. To address this gap, this study proposes the establishment of engineering requirements that specifically target real-world hazards and resilience factors important to AV operation, using High-Definition Maps, Global Navigation Satellite System, and weather sensors. The findings include the need for engineering requirements to establish clear criteria for a high-definition maps functionality in the presence of erroneous perception subsystem inputs which enhances the overall safety and reliability of the autonomous vehicles.

Motor Control during Gearshift Phase to Reduce the Oscillation in Dual Hybrid Vehicles

This paper defines a control method for shift torque exchange stage and a torque distribution control method for speed regulation stage. In the torque exchange stage, the torque distribution problem of active and passive clutches considers the injection of sine curve for local correction, which can solve the fish belly problem of hydraulic response (i.e. the hydraulic response is slow at the beginning and the hydraulic response is fast at the end). In the speed regulation stage, the target speed gradient profile is determined according to different shift types. The determination of the target speed gradient profile integrates different driving modes, throttle, P2 energy and clutch temperature.

Integrated Decision-Making and Planning Method for Autonomous Vehicles Based on an Improved Driving Risk Field

The driving risk field model offers a feasible approach for assessing driving risks and planning safe trajectory in complex traffic scenarios. However, the conventional risk field fails to account for the vehicle size and acceleration, results in the same trajectories are generated when facing different vehicle types and unable to make safe decisions in emergency situations. Therefore, this paper firstly introduces the acceleration and vehicle size of surrounding vehicles for improving the driving risk model. Then, an integrated decision-making and planning model is proposed based on the combination of the novelty risk field and model predictive control (MPC), in which driving risk and vehicle dynamics constraints are taken into consideration. Finally, the multiple driving scenarios are designed and analyzed for validate the proposed model.

Projecting Lane Lines from Proxy High-Definition Maps for Automated Vehicle Perception in Road Occlusion Scenarios

Contemporary ADS and ADAS localization technology utilizes real-time perception sensors such as visible light cameras, radar sensors, and lidar sensors, greatly improving transportation safety in sufficiently clear environmental conditions. However, when lane lines are completely occluded, the reliability of on-board automated perception systems breaks down, and vehicle control must be returned to the human driver. This limits the operational design domain of automated vehicles significantly, as occlusion can be caused by shadows, leaves, or snow, which all occur in many regions. High-definition map data, which contains a high level of detail about road features, is an alternative source of the required lane line information. This study details a novel method where high-definition map data are processed to locate fully occluded lane lines, allowing for automated path planning in scenarios where it would otherwise be impossible.

An Ultra-Light Heuristic Algorithm for Autonomous Optimal Eco-Driving

Connected autonomy brings with it the means of significantly increasing vehicle Energy Economy (EE) through optimal Eco-Driving control. Much research has been conducted in the area of autonomous Eco-Driving control via various methods. Generally, proposed algorithms fall into the broad categories of rules-based controls, optimal controls, and meta-heuristics. Proposed algorithms also vary in cost function type with the 2-norm of acceleration being common. In a previous study the authors classified and implemented commonly represented methods from the literature using real-world data. Results from the study showed a tradeoff between EE improvement and run-time and that the best overall performers were meta-heuristics. Results also showed that cost functions sensitive to the 1-norm of acceleration led to better performance than those which directly minimize the 2-norm.

Quantitative Resilience Assessment of GPS, IMU, and LiDAR Sensor Fusion for Vehicle Localization Using Resilience Engineering Theory

Practical applications of recently developed sensor fusion algorithms perform poorly in the real world due to a lack of proper evaluation during development. Existing evaluation metrics do not properly address a wide variety of testing scenarios. This issue can be addressed using proactive performance measurements such as the tools of resilience engineering theory rather than reactive performance measurements such as root mean square error. Resilience engineering is an established discipline for evaluating proactive performance on complex socio-technical systems which has been underutilized for automated vehicle development and evaluation. In this study, we use resilience engineering metrics to assess the performance of a sensor fusion algorithm for vehicle localization. A Kalman Filter is used to fuse GPS, IMU and LiDAR data for vehicle localization in the CARLA simulator.

Light-duty Plug-in Electric Vehicles in China: Evolution, Competition, and Outlook

China's plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market with stocks at 7.8 million is the world's largest in 2021, and it accounts for half of the global PEV growth in 2021. The PEV market in China has dramatically evolved since the pandemic in 2020: over 20% of all new PEV sales are from China by mid-2022. Recent features of PEV market dynamics, consumer acceptance, policies, and infrastructure have important implications for both the global energy market and manufacturing stakeholders. From the perspective of demand pull-supply push, this study analyzes China's PEV industry with a market dynamics framework by reviewing sales, product and brand, infrastructure, and government policies from the last few years and outlooking the development of the new government’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).

Refinements of the Dynamic Inversion Part of Hierarchical 4WIS/4WID Trajectory Tracking Controllers

To tackle the over-actuated and highly nonlinear characteristics that four-wheel-independent-steering and four-wheel-independent -driving (4WIS/4WID) vehicles exhibit when tracking aggressive trajectory, a hierarchical controller with layers of computation-intensive modules is commonly adopted. The high-level linear motion controller commands the desired state derivatives of the vehicle to meet the overall trajectory tracking objectives. Then the system dynamic is inversed by the mid-level control allocation layer and the low-level wheel control layer to map the target state derivatives to steering angle and motor torque commands. However, this type of controller is difficult to implement on the embedded hardware onboard since the nonlinear dynamic inversion is typically solved by nonlinear programming.

Study on Cavitation Effect of Hydraulic Retarder

Hydraulic retarder is important auxiliary brake device which widely used in commercial vehicles for its economy, safety and driving comfort, however cavitation will occur and reduce the braking performance when hydraulic retarder operates at high speed. In this paper, a model of hydraulic retarder considering cavitation effect was established, and the reliability of the model was verified by comparing with the external characteristics of the product which was obtained from Voith’s official discloses data. Then the cavitation of hydraulic retarder under high-speed working condition was studied by the establishing simulation model. The simulation model can describe and analyze the internal flow field in the hydraulic retarder, and can be used as an important tool for the development and optimization of hydraulic retarder in the future. When hydraulic retarder’s rotational speed is about 1500rpm, the cavitation will be observed in the working chamber.

Evaluating Class 6 Delivery Truck Fuel Economy and Emissions Using Vehicle System Simulations for Conventional and Hybrid Powertrains and Co-Optima Fuel Blends

The US Department of Energy’s Co-Optimization of Engine and Fuels Initiative (Co-Optima) investigated how unique properties of bio-blendstocks considered within Co-Optima help address emissions challenges with mixing controlled compression ignition (i.e., conventional diesel combustion) and enable advanced compression ignition modes suitable for implementation in a diesel engine. Additionally, the potential synergies of these Co-Optima technologies in hybrid vehicle applications in the medium- and heavy-duty sector was also investigated. In this work, vehicles system were simulated using the Autonomie software tool for quantifying the benefits of Co-Optima engine technologies for medium-duty trucks. A Class 6 delivery truck with a 6.7 L diesel engine was used for simulations over representative real-world and certification drive cycles with four different powertrains to investigate fuel economy, criteria emissions, and performance.

Multi-Objective Adaptive Cruise Control via Deep Reinforcement Learning

This work presents a multi-objective adaptive cruise control (ACC) system via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). During the control period, it quantitatively considers three indexes: tracking accuracy, riding comfort, and fuel economy. The system balances contradictions between different indexes to achieve the best overall control results. First, a hierarchical control architecture is utilized, where the upper level controller is synthesized under DRL framework to give out the vehicle desired acceleration. The lower level controller executes the command and compensates vehicle dynamics. Then, four state variables that can comprehensively determine the car-following states are selected for better convergence. Multi-objective reward function is quantitatively designed referring to the evaluation indexes, in which safety constraints are considered by adding violation penalty. Thereafter, the training environment which excludes the disturbance of preceding car acceleration is built.

Mobility Energy Productivity Evaluation of Prediction-Based Vehicle Powertrain Control Combined with Optimal Traffic Management

Transportation vehicle and network system efficiency can be defined in two ways: 1) reduction of travel times across all the vehicles in the system, and 2) reduction in total energy consumed by all the vehicles in the system. The mechanisms to realize these efficiencies are treated as independent (i.e., vehicle and network domains) and, when combined, they have not been adequately studied to date. This research aims to integrate previously developed and published research on Predictive Optimal Energy Management Strategies (POEMS) and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS), to address the need for quantifying improvement in system efficiency resulting from simultaneous vehicle and network optimization. POEMS and ITS are partially independent methods which do not require each other to function but whose individual effectiveness may be affected by the presence of the other. In order to evaluate the system level efficiency improvements, the Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) metric is used.

Performance Evaluation of an Autonomous Vehicle Using Resilience Engineering

Standard operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads results in significant exposure to high levels of risk. There is a significant need to develop metrics that evaluate safety of an automated system without reliance on the rate of vehicle accidents and fatalities compared to the number of miles driven; a proactive rather than a reactive metric is needed. Resilience engineering is a new paradigm for safety management that focuses on evaluating complex systems and their interaction with the environment. This paper presents the overall methodology of resilience engineering and the resilience assessment grid (RAG) as an evaluation tool to measure autonomous systems' resilience. This assessment tool was used to evaluate the ability to respond to the system. A Pure Pursuit controller was developed and utilized as the path tracking control algorithm, and the Carla simulator was used to implement the algorithm and develop the testing environment for this methodology.

Therefore, it is extremely important to study and design a high-power drive system in this paper, so as to ensure a stable output of the current. The system is composed of power supply, load, secondary power supply and control chip. The choice of power supply and load is conventional model. The secondary power supply adopts step-down circuit, with synchronous rectifier chip, which can effectively reduce energy consumption, and with temperature protection device, which can ensure the safe and reliable operation of equipment.

Visual System Analysis of High Speed On-Off Valve Based on Multi-Physics Simulation

High speed on-off valves (HSVs) are widely used in advanced hydraulic braking actuators, including regenerative braking systems and active safety systems, which take crucial part in improving the energy efficiency and safety performance of vehicles. As a component involving multiple physical fields, the HSV is affected by the interaction of the fields-fluid, electromagnetic, and mechanical. Since the opening of the HSV is small and the flow speed is high, cavitation and vortex are inevitably brought out so that increase the valve’s noise and instability. However, it is costly and complex to observe the flow status by visual fluid experiments. Hence, in this article a visual multi-physics system simulation model of the HSV is explored, in which the flow field model of the HSV built by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is co-simulated with the model of hydraulic actuator established by AMESim.

Advanced Finite-Volume Numerics and Source Term Assumptions for Kernel and G-Equation Modelling of Propane/Air Flames

G-Equation models represent propagating flame fronts with an implicit two-dimensional surface representation (level-set). Level-set methods are fast, as transport source terms for the implicit surface can be solved with finite-volume operators on the finite-volume domain, without having to build the actual surface. However, they include approximations whose practical effects are not properly understood. In this study, we improved the numerics of the FRESCO CFD code’s G-Equation solver and developed a new method to simulate kernel growth using signed distance functions and the analytical sphere-mesh overlap. We analyzed their role for simulating propane/air flames, using three well-established constant-volume configurations: a one-dimensional, freely propagating laminar flame; a disc-shaped, constant-volume swirl combustor; and torch-jet flame development through an orifice from a two-chamber device.

Detection of Driver’s Cognitive States Based on LightGBM with Multi-Source Fused Data

According to the statistics of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver’s cognitive distraction, which is usually caused by drivers using mobile phones, has become one of the main causes of traffic accidents. To solve this problem and guarantee the safety of man-vehicle-road system, the most critical work is to improve the accuracy of driver’s cognitive state detection. In this paper, a novel driver’s cognitive state detecting method based on LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) is proposed. Firstly, cognitive distraction experiments of making calls are carried out on a driving simulator to collect vehicle states, eye tracking and EEG (electron encephalogram) data simultaneously and feature extraction is conducted. Then a classifier considering road and individual characteristics used for detecting cognitive states is trained based on LightGBM algorithm, with 3 predefined cognitive states including concentration, ordinary distraction and extreme distraction.
