Impact of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) on Battery Degradation in a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly recognized as an effective solution in the battle against climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Lithium-ion batteries have become the standard for energy storage in the automobile industry, widely used in EVs due to their superior characteristics compared to other batteries. The growing popularity of the Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept can be attributed to its surplus energy storage capacity, positive environmental impact, and the reliability and stability of the power grid. However, the increased utilization of the battery through these integrations can result in faster degradation and the need for replacement. As batteries are one of the most expensive components of EVs, the decision to deploy an EV in V2G operations may be uncertain due to the concerns of battery degradation from the owner’s perspective.

Experimental Study of Low Thermal Inertia Thermal Barrier Coating in a Spark Ignited Multicylinder Production Engine

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have long been studied as a potential pathway to achieve higher thermal efficiency in spark ignition engines. Researchers have studied coatings with different thicknesses and thermophysical properties to counteract the volumetric efficiency penalty associated with TBCs in spark ignition. To achieve an efficiency benefit with minimal charge heating during the intake stroke, low thermal inertia coatings characterized by their larger temperature swings are required. To study the impact of low thermal inertia coatings in spark ignition, coatings were applied to the cylinder head, piston crown, intake and exhaust valve faces, and intake and exhaust valve backsides. Tier III EEE E10 certification gasoline was used to keep the experiments relevant to the present on-road vehicles. This study is aimed at analyzing durability of the coatings as well as efficiency and emissions improvements.

Experimental Comparison of a Rotary Valvetrain on the Performance and Emissions of a Light Duty Spark Ignition Engine

Rotary valve technology can provide increased flow area and higher discharge coefficients than conventional poppet valves for internal combustion engines. This increase in intake charging efficiency can improve the power density of four-stroke internal combustion engines, particularly at high engine speeds, where flow is choked through conventional poppet valves. In this work, the valvetrain of a light duty single cylinder spark ignition engine was replaced with a rotary valve train. The impact of this valvetrain conversion on performance and emissions was evaluated by comparing spark timing sweeps with lambda ranging from 0.8 to 1.1 at wide open throttle. The results indicated that the rotary valvetrain increased the amount of air trapped at intake valve closing and resulted in a significantly faster burn duration than the conventional valvetrain.

GT-Suite Modeling of Thermal Barrier Coatings in a Multi-Cylinder Turbocharged DISI Engine for Catalyst Light-Off Delay Improvement

Catalytic converters, which are commonly used for after-treatment in SI engines, exhibit poor performance at lower temperatures. This is one of the main reasons that tailpipe emissions drastically increase during cold-start periods. Thermal inertia of turbocharger casing prolongs the catalyst warm-up time. Exhaust enthalpy management becomes crucial for a turbocharged direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine during cold-start periods to quickly heat the catalyst and minimize cold-start emissions. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), because of their low thermal inertia, reach higher surface temperatures faster than metal walls, thereby blocking heat transfer and saving enthalpy for the catalyst. The TBCs applied on surfaces that exchange heat with exhaust gases can increase the enthalpy available for the catalyst warm-up.

The application of power electronic converters (PEC) in electric vehicles (EVs) has increased immensely as they provide enhanced controllability and flexibility to these vehicles. Accordingly, the interest in developing innovative and sustainable technologies to ensure safe and reliable operation of PECs has also risen. One of the most difficult challenges experienced during the development of reliable PECs is the design of proper thermal management systems for controlling the junction temperature and reducing the thermal cycling of power semiconductors. The addition of Active Thermal Control (ATC) can mitigate these concerns. Moreover, the performance of the thermal management system can be enhanced further by the integration of active cooling methods. An active cooling system consumes external energy for circulating cooling air or liquid within the PECs.

Utilizing Neural Networks for Semantic Segmentation on RGB/LiDAR Fused Data for Off-road Autonomous Military Vehicle Perception

Image segmentation has historically been a technique for analyzing terrain for military autonomous vehicles. One of the weaknesses of image segmentation from camera data is that it lacks depth information, and it can be affected by environment lighting. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is an emerging technology in image segmentation that is able to estimate distances to the objects it detects. One advantage of LiDAR is the ability to gather accurate distances regardless of day, night, shadows, or glare. This study examines LiDAR and camera image segmentation fusion to improve an advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) algorithm for off-road autonomous military vehicles. The volume of points generated by LiDAR provides the vehicle with distance and spatial data surrounding the vehicle.

The Effect of Exhaust Emission Conditions and Coolant Temperature on the Composition of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Deposits

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolers are widely used on diesel engines to reduce in-cylinder NOx formation. A common problem is the accumulation of a fouling layer inside the heat exchanger, mainly due to thermophoresis that leads to deposition of particulate matter (PM), and condensation of hydrocarbons (HC) from the diesel exhaust. From a recent investigation of deposits from field samples of EGR coolers, it was confirmed that the densities of their deposits were much higher than reported in previous studies. In this study, the experiments were conducted in order to verify hypotheses about deposit growth, especially densification. An experimental set up which included a custom-made shell and tube type heat exchanger with six surrogate tubes was designed to control flow rate independently, and was installed on a 1.9 L L-4 common rail turbo diesel engine.

Experimental Comparison of Diesel and Wet Ethanol on an Opposed-Piston Two Stroke (OP2S) Engine

Renewable fuels, such as the alcohols, ammonia, and hydrogen, have a high autoignition resistance. Therefore, to enable these fuels in compression ignition, some modifications to existing engine architectures is required, including increasing compression ratio, adding insulation, and/or using hot internal residuals. The opposed-piston two-stroke (OP2S) engine architecture is unique in that, unlike conventional four-stroke engines, the OP2S can control the amount of trapped residuals over a wide range through its scavenging process. As such, the OP2S engine architecture is well suited to achieve compression ignition of high autoignition resistance fuels. In this work, compression ignition with wet ethanol 80 (80% ethanol, 20% water by mass) on a 3-cylinder OP2S engine is experimentally demonstrated. A load sweep is performed from idle to nearly full load of the engine, with comparisons made to diesel at each operating condition.

Approaches for Simulation Model Reuse in Systems Design — A Review

In this paper, we review the literature related to the reuse of computer-based simulation models in the context of systems design. Models are used to capture aspects of existing or envisioned systems and are simulated to predict the behavior of these systems. However, developing such models from scratch requires significant time and effort. Researchers have recognized that the time and effort can be reduced if existing models or model components are reused, leading to the study of model reusability. In this paper, we review the tasks necessary to retrieve and reuse model components from repositories, and to prepare new models and model components such that they are more amenable for future reuse. Model reuse can be significantly enhanced by carefully characterizing the model, and capturing its meaning and intent so that potential users can determine whether the model meets their needs.

Autoignition Characterization of Wet Isopropanol-n-Butanol-Ethanol Blends for ACI

In this work, two blends of isopropanol, n-butanol, and ethanol (IBE) that can be produced by metabolically engineered clostridium acetobutylicum are studied experimentally in advanced compression ignition (ACI). This is done to determine whether these fuel blends have the right fuel properties to enable thermally stratified compression ignition, a stratified ACI strategy that using the cooling potential of single stage ignition fuels to control the heat release process. The first microorganism, ATCC824, produces a blend of 34.5% isopropanol, 60.1% n-butanol, and 5.4% ethanol, by mass. The second microorganism, BKM19, produces a blend of 12.3% isopropanol, 54.0% n-butanol, and 33.7% ethanol, by mass. The sensitivity of both IBE blends to intake pressure, intake temperature, and cylinder energy content (fueling rate) is characterized and compared to that of its neat constituents. Both IBE blends behaved similarly with a reactivity level between that of ethanol and n-butanol.

Experimental Validation of Eco-Driving and Eco-Heating Strategies for Connected and Automated HEVs

This paper presents experimental results that validate eco-driving and eco-heating strategies developed for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). By exploiting vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, traffic signal timing, and queue length estimations, optimized and smoothed speed profiles for the ego-vehicle are generated to reduce energy consumption. Next, the planned eco-trajectories are incorporated into a real-time predictive optimization framework that coordinates the cabin thermal load (in cold weather) with the speed preview, i.e., eco-heating. To enable eco-heating, the engine coolant (as the only heat source for cabin heating) and the cabin air are leveraged as two thermal energy storages. Our eco-heating strategy stores thermal energy in the engine coolant and cabin air while the vehicle is driving at high speeds, and releases the stored energy slowly during the vehicle stops for cabin heating without forcing the engine to idle to provide the heating source.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Terrain Using mmWave Radar Imaging

Military ground vehicles operate in off-road environments traversing different terrains under various environmental conditions. There has been an increasing interest towards autonomous off-road vehicle navigation, leading to the needs of terrain traversability assessment through sensing. These methods utilized data-driven approaches on classical robotic perception sensing modalities (RGB cameras, Lidar, and depth cameras) positioned in front of ground vehicles in order to observe approaching terrain. Classical robotic sensing modalities, though effective for describing environment geometry and object detection and tracking, aren’t able to directly observe features related to compaction and moisture content which have significant effects on the moduli properties governing terrain mechanics. These methods then become very specialized to specific regions and environmental conditions which are inevitably subject to change.

A Diesel Engine Emission System Based on Brownian Diffusion a Separation

Diesel engine exhaust poses an ongoing threat to human health as well as to the environment. Automotive exhaust treatment systems have been developed over the years to reduce the large amount of diesel particulate matter (DPM) released to the atmosphere. Current systems can be categorized as selective catalytic reduction, catalytic converters, and diesel particulate filters. This study presents an emission system that focuses on the removal of exhaust particles using Brownian diffusion of DPM toward fog drops followed by cyclonic separation of DPM rich fog drops. The experimental system consisted of a 13.2 kW diesel engine, heat exchanger to cool the exhaust to saturation temperature, ultrasonic fogger, cyclone separator, and recovery of waste particulate. Representative emission tests have been performed at five different diesel engine speeds and corresponding crankshaft loads.

The Influence of the Operating Duty Cycles on the Composition of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Deposits of Industrial Diesel Engines

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolers are commonly used in on-road and off-road diesel engines to reduce the recirculated gas temperature in order to reduce NOx emissions. One of the common performance behaviors for EGR coolers in use on diesel engines is a reduction of the heat exchanger effectiveness, mainly due to particulate matter (PM) deposition and condensation of hydrocarbons (HC) from the diesel exhaust on the inside walls of the EGR cooler. According to previous studies, typically, the effectiveness decreases rapidly initially, then asymptotically stabilizes over time. Prior work has postulated a deposit removal mechanism to explain this stabilization phenomenon. In the present study, five field aged EGR cooler samples that were used on construction machines for over 10,000 hours were analyzed in order to understand the deposit structure as well as the deposit composition after long duration use.

Impact of Miller Cycle Strategies on Combustion Characteristics, Emissions and Efficiency in Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

This study experimentally investigates the impact of Miller cycle strategies on the combustion process, emissions, and thermal efficiency in heavy-duty diesel engines. The experiments were conducted at constant engine speed, load, and engine-out NOx (1160 rev/min, 1.76 MPa net IMEP, 4.5 g/kWh) on a single cylinder research engine equipped with a fully-flexible hydraulic valve train system. Early Intake Valve Closing (EIVC) and Late Intake Valve Closing (LIVC) timing strategies were compared to a conventional intake valve profile. While the decrease in effective compression ratio associated with the use of Miller valve profiles was symmetric around bottom dead center, the decrease in volumetric efficiency (VE) was not. EIVC profiles were more effective at reducing VE than LIVC profiles. Despite this difference, EIVC and LIVC profiles with comparable VE decrease resulted in similar changes in combustion and emissions characteristics.

Evaluating the Performance of a Conventional and Hybrid Bus Operating on Diesel and B20 Fuel for Emissions and Fuel Economy

With ongoing concerns about the elevated levels of ambient air pollution in urban areas and the contribution from heavy-duty diesel vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles are considered as a potential solution as they are perceived to be more fuel efficient and less polluting than their conventional engine counterparts. However, recent studies have shown that real-world emissions may be substantially higher than those measured in the laboratory, mainly due to operating conditions that are not fully accounted for in dynamometer test cycles. At the U.S. EPA National Fuel and Vehicle Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) the in-use criteria emissions and energy efficiency of heavy-duty class 8 vehicles (up to 36280 kg) can be evaluated under controlled conditions in the heavy-duty chassis dynamometer test.

Variability in Driving Conditions and its Impact on Energy Consumption of Urban Battery Electric and Hybrid Buses

Growing environmental concerns and stringent vehicle emissions regulations has created an urge in the automotive industry to move towards electrified propulsion systems. Reducing and eliminating the emission from public transportation vehicles plays a major role in contributing towards lowering the emission level. Battery electric buses are regarded as a type of promising green mass transportation as they provide the advantage of less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger. However, the electric bus faces a problem of limited range and is not able to drive throughout the day without being recharged. This research studies a public bus transit system example which servicing the city of Ann Arbor in Michigan and investigates the impact of different electrification levels on the final CO2 reduction. Utilizing models of a conventional diesel, hybrid electric, and battery electric bus, the CO2 emission for each type of transportation bus is estimated.

Single vs Double Stage Partial Flow Dilution System: Automobile PM Emission Measurement

The US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 40 Part 1065 and 1066 require gravimetric determination of automobile Particulate Matter (PM) collected onto filter media from the diluted exhaust. PM is traditionally collected under simulated driving conditions in a laboratory from a full flow Constant Volume Sampler (CVS) system, where the total engine exhaust is diluted by HEPA filtered air. This conventional sampling and measurement practice is facing challenges in accurately quantifying PM at the upcoming 2025-2028 CARB LEVIII 1 mg/mi PM emissions standards. On the other hand, sampling a large amount of PM emitted from large size high power engines introduces additional challenges. Applying flow weighting, adjusting the Dilution Ratio (DR) and Filter Face Velocity (FFV) are proposed options to overcome these challenges.

Real-Time Embedded Models for Simulation and Control of Clean and Fuel-Efficient Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

This paper presents a framework for modeling a modern diesel engine and its aftertreatment system which are intended to be used for real-time implementation as a virtual engine and in a model-based control architecture to predict critical variables such as fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. The models are specifically able to capture the impact of critical control variables such as the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve position and fuel injection timing, as well as operating conditions of speed and torque, on the engine airpath variables and emissions during transient driving conditions. To enable real-time computation of the models, a minimal realization of the nonlinear airpath model is presented and it is coupled with a cycle averaged NOx emissions predictor to estimate feed gas NOx emissions. Then, the feedgas enthalpy is used to calculate the thermal behavior of the aftertreatment system required for prediction of tailpipe emissions.

Simulation-Based Evaluation of Spark-Assisted Compression Ignition Control for Production

Spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI) leverages flame propagation to trigger autoignition in a controlled manner. The autoignition event is highly sensitive to several parameters, and thus, achieving SACI in production demands a high tolerance to variations in conditions. Limited research is available to quantify the combustion response of SACI to these variations. A simulation study is performed to establish trends, limits, and control implications for SACI combustion over a wide range of conditions. The operating space was evaluated with a detailed chemical kinetics model. Key findings were synthesized from these results and applied to a 1-D engine model. This model identified performance characteristics and potential actuator positions for a production-viable SACI engine. This study shows charge preparation is critical and can extend the low-load limit by strengthening flame propagation and the high-load limit by reducing ringing intensity.
